4-0 out of 5 stars Review
Let me start this review by telling you what my son said:

No no mommy. This book stays here with me.Leave it here because I like it.

For those of us with kids, you know how difficult it is to get them focused on one thing and having them like it enough to want to hold on to it.Especially a book. So because of this I give the book high ratings.

As a parent, I liked this book because every child goes through the same things Iggy went through (being the new one in school and dealing with bullies and a crush.) If there is a way to make talking to your children about this fun, I am all for it.No child likes to sit and listen to a parent tell them "Everything will be all right".An iguana saying it?Oh yeah, they will listen.I think Melissa Williams did a really nice job with this book.

Something else I liked about the book, which many people take for granted is the font.It was big.The perfect size for kids.It seems like lately, unless it's a baby book, the font has been getting smaller and smaller to fit more into the book.Melissa decided to go the other route.Instead of quantity she went for quality.Very well done.

This book is getting added to my "kid party" gift bag list.

5-0 out of 5 stars Litland.com loves Iggy the Iguana!
Introverted, clumsy and a tail that is too long. Sounds like the typical "boy next door". Or at least the lizard next door! That's Iggy, the introverted 9 year old lizard in 4th grade. An iguana to be exact. A self-conscious one at that.It must be tough to start a new school for a shy kid who knows so little about the world. We can feel his worry and fear, his anxiety and joy, and know that others have nerve-wracking experiences similar to our own.Through a focus on the emotions of the character, the author captures her reader.

Ultimately, Iggy is like the rest of us. He has a need to belong, to have friends, to have fun, and have the loving security of his family. He could choose to manipulate but doesn't; to gossip but turns the conversation towards a positive direction instead; to make fun of others but instead adapts his own style to their own. He could be scheming of how to sneak out of the house to play with new friends but, instead, he asks his mother (and she delays a decision until dinner when the family is together). Iggy may not know it, but he has a habit of making good choices.

5-0 out of 5 stars "ENCHANTING AND DELIGHTFUL!"
The hero in this delightful children's story is Iggy, who is a loveable nine year old, and the new kid on the
block. It's hard enough that Iggy has to deal with his smart, sassy younger sister, but there are other issues that he must also challenge. As Iggy prepares to enter a public school for the first time in his life,
not knowing anyone, he realizes that he needs to make lots of friends. Along with trying to prove himself
worthy, he is forced to deal with bullies, and his first childhood crush. Snap Shell, Kit Kat, and Molly
all have unique personalities, and are extremely funny. Dragon D tries to act very cool, but does this type
of personality fade away, after everyone really gets to know you? Does Iggy have a tough time trying to fit in, and who makes him feel comfortable? How does Iggy feel about Lizbeth? Does Iggy survive the trials and
tribulations of his age group on his journey through elementary school? I highly recommend this wonderful
children's book that will touch the hearts of readers of all ages. Children will be able to relate to the
story, and learn from those lessons through a fun, easy, and humorous read. Melissa M. Williams presents everyday issues, along with simple solutions in an interesting story, with adorable characters. This book
will encourage children to be considerate and caring, with a positive attitude. The author includes the
true value of family and friendship, which is an essential stepping-stone from childhood to adult. There are serious moments, funny moments, and touching moments. This fun and easy read is recommended for any child
who is preparing to enter elementary school, and for children in this age group who are changing schools,
after moving to a new location. How does Iggy adapt from an All Lizard School to a public All Animal School?
The characters come to life as Iggy and his friends experience their first school year together, issues get
resolved, and emotions become heartfelt in this educational, children's adventure. "IGGY THE IGUANA" is as
thrilling as Walt Disney's LADY AND THE TRAMP, and as funny as CHICKEN LITTLE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotionally and Eloquently Written is Iggy the Iguana!!
Iggy the Iguana brings us into a world that we, as adults, may have forgotten.Remembering the trials and tribulations of being nine years old is brought out beautifully, emotionally, and eloquently in Melissa William's book.I love how she took the love of an unusual childhood pet, and brought out all the feelings she had as a young child. It seems children can relate easily and emphatically with animals, and in turn use those lessons in their own lives. What a wonderful way to teach kids, as Melissa does with Iggy. This is a must read for every child to help shape and mold them into caring individuals, which in turn will positively affect our world.

~Barbara Techel, Author of Frankie, the Walk 'N Roll Dog

5-0 out of 5 stars Iggy theIguana
Iggy the Iguana is a really good book for kids my age should read.My favorite part is when Iggy goes to a new school and meets Lizibeth and he blushes because she likes him.I like Molly, his little sister, a lot too.I can't wait for the next book to come out.I would love to have this book in my school.

This book is poorly written, outdated (it is not worded as though it was written in 2003), and to add insult to injury is printed in China.

5-0 out of 5 stars Iguanas
Every thing I would ever need to know about Iguanas is in this book. I've come accross some other books about Iguanas , but this is buy far the best one out there. I've been studying Iguans for more than 15 years. Yet I'me learnning new things about them from this book.

Product Description
Everyone -- even a lizard -- needs a vacation now and then.... Even though her "almost sister" Alison mists the room daily with salt spray and sees to it that Iguana has a closet with a heating pad, a free library card, and her own e-mail address, the pet is restive (and peeling). It's winter in Schenectady, and Iguana wants sun -- just what's promised by a travel poster for Key West, Florida. Emboldened, she writes a good-bye to Alison, signing her name "Iguana," and, despite her innate fear of dogs, boards a Greyhound bus headed south, where she has a blast. When her funds dwindle, Iguana takes a dishwashing job, only to learn to her horror that the restaurant's Friday night special is iguana stew and the chef's run out of his principal ingredient. Meanwhile, Alison pines in the snow belt, hardly guessing at the dramatic turn her pet's life has taken. The story is wittily wild (but the iguana facts -- she separates from her tail while fleeing the restaurant's dog -- are all sound science), the pictures burst with our heroine's grand style and pluck, and the ending -- courtesy of the U.S. Postal Service -- is happy for all. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A silly tale about an Iguana's search for something better.
Although the illustrations are very nicely done, very amusing, the story itself could use some help.

A pet iguana's health suffers as she lacks something in her life - outdoors, sunshine...adventure, perhaps.I found it a bit sad that the iguana was able to leave her friend/owner so easily to go off on an adventure on her own.

The direction this story should have gone was for the owner to figure out that the iguana needed a change of scenery. Then the story could have shown how the owner of the iguana went about getting her pet to a happier place, if even just for a vacation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Megan McDonald's "Night Iguana Left Home" is wonderful !
My grandaughter and I read a lot and Megan McDonald is one of our favorites. "Iguana" is very contemporary and yet charming as are other books by this author. My 4 year old asks for them to be read overand over.Other books By Megan McDonald that we have enjoyed are "Isthis a House for Hermit Crab" and "Insects are my Life". Both have a wonderful rhythm to the text.I know that you will enjoy thisauthor.

5-0 out of 5 stars everykid lives in her skin
Iguana has a wonderful home and (human)sister but she feels a powerful need to go South. In Florida she has adventures both scary and cool.I thought this was a sharp allegory about growing up and becoming independent.Vivid illustrations are true to the modern tone, and thelesson is really warm-hearted.A good choice for a kid with an independentstreak, or one whose independence you'd like to foster. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Neopolitanof new latino fiction
I call this Neopolitan cause like the icecream has slices of fiction by not 3 but 29 writers.
This collection of different stories introduces us to different cultures through new words in italics like santeria.
'Nellie' by Roberto G fernandez has many bouts of good imagination. With his description of something as trivial as an open suitcase, he has driven home a point 'why write?'.
'Tito's Good Bye' by Cristina Garcia is well written.
A story on a granny visiting a school girl in a city brings about differences one finds in such a situation.
Each chapter has a brief description about the author and his/her works. With this half your research of 'which other work of the author to read' and 'whats the next book' is already done for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Latin Short Stories
I enjoyed the stories written by the writers. These stories will move you through several types of emotions, while others will cause you to think. Not only do the writers have various background as far as which country/environment they have come from but I was intrigued by the wealth of the material given that some of the writers share their lives with writing as well as other occupations. It is encouraging to know that you do not have to devote your entire life to writing in order to be a writer of great stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Latino in America

This is an excellent anthology of short stories written by Latino authors from many different countries. Not only are the short stories themselves entertaining, but they give insight into what it is like for each particular Latino culture to assimilate in America. What it is like to be a Cuban is not the same for a Mexican in America, and a Puerto Rican and so on. Even though some of the Latino cultures appear similar, there are major differences that are not obvious to mainstream America. In this book of short stories, you will find consistent topics that can be shared by everyone Latino or not. Anyone who is interested in the differences between Latino cultures in America should read this book because they are not all the same. Besides, the stories are great.

Now in a completely revised and expanded volume, Giant Lizards features all newly written information by an expert on monitors and other large lizards (defined as those reaching over 3 feet in length) and it covers over 90 species. 1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money, and the health of your captives- buy a different book
For those considering purchasing this book, don't. There are several other books which deal with the natural history and keeping of large lizards (iguanids and varanids) out there which are more deserving of your hard-earned money. This book is filled with sloppy editing, factual errors, contradictions, poor photography, and just terrible husbandry advice.

A detailed review of this book appears in a recent issue of the monitor lizard journal Biawak (link below). I suggest reading it before purchasing this book:

5-0 out of 5 stars This book gives you a nice basic overview of the desert iguana!Do you know what an ectotherm is?
If you look at the scaly, bumpy claw of an iguana you probably immediately think of dinosaurs as its appearance may remind you of an Iguanodon. The iguana is a reptile, has short stubby legs and has rough scaly skin that helps "hold in water" and protects it from predators.Iguanas can live in hot, dry places, but also can be found in rainforests. This book primarily takes a look at the desert iguana that can be found in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico.

Iguanas cannot generate their own body heat and often "bask in the sun in the hot afternoon."They are ectotherms (cold-blooded) and because of that "their body heat changes to match the warmth or cold around them."If they get too hot, they will head for the shade to cool off their body. They have very sharp claws that will dig into the bark of a tree or bush and they can climb to escape the heat or find some food. The desert iguana eats "leaves, fruits, and flowers."You will also learn that it is a territorial reptile, it can camouflage itself by blending into the landscape, you'll learn about its predators, how it uses its claws to fight, how its tail can fall off if a predator grabs it, you'll see a photograph of a tail that was regenerated, you learn about how they "lay their eggs in burrows" and more!

This is a nice little introduction to animal science and reptiles that may spark an interest in nonfiction. This was not intended to be an extremely detailed book, but rather takes a general look at the iguana. The reading level is for ages 4 to 7, but does use proper scientific terminology such as the word "ectotherm."I like the fact that this book gives a lot of opportunity for classroom discussion and asks questions in the text. There are scattered informative dialogue balloons throughout the text and numerous photographs. In the back of the book is a "Desert Iguana Range Map," a diagram of an iguana, an index, a glossary and additional recommended book and website resources. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lizards!
Lizards are one of my favorite animals, and all of the beautiful pictures and fascinating facts made me love them even more, and gave me some interesting ideas about what types of lizards beyond the common ones will make the best pets.In addition to the types of lizards which everyone knows about, such as the green iguana, the leopard gecko, the various types of chameleons, the Gila monster, and the green anole, there are types of lizards not commonly known outside of the herpetological community, such as the Eastern glass lizard, which looks like a snake (I think that's my new favorite lizard!), the black tree monitor, the fat-tailed gecko, the six-lined racerunner, and the granite spiny lizard. There isn't a single bad picture in here; lizards just seem to be naturally cute, beautiful, or stately. Some of the more interesting ones are the ones that look like miniature dinosaurs (and have been used in numerous movies over the years as doubles for dinos); this order of reptiles is, after all, descended from the dinosaurs and millions of years old, older than the human race or even the mammalian class.Along with the lovely pictures are chapters on physical characteristics and behavior (such as vision, hearing, mating, teeth, thermoregulation, domestication, hibernation, and locomotion), information on each of the lizards profiled, information on lizard conservation (it's sad how threatened this neat little order of reptiles is by humans, when they do us a great service by eating insect pests and could hold within them medical secrets that could save lives), and the relationship between lizards and humans throughout history and in various places around the world.Though the reptilian brain will never be as advanced, either intellectually or emotionally, as the mammalian brain, the information contained here reveals that numerous types of lizards seem to be rather intelligent, resourceful, and even emotional.

Sadly, during the writing of this book, the photographer, John Netherton, passed away suddenly at a rather young age.Though there wasn't time to get his stories behind these pictures, the text David Badger did include probably would have done him proud.I can't wait to read the other books they collaborated on, about snakes and frogs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting
I've been photographing Anoles around my garden for the last year or two, and, wanted to do a little extra reading on them.Lizard: A Natural History, provides not only a very enjoyable read, but, fantastic photography.A must companion book for anyone who enjoys getting a little closer to the 'backyard wild', and, wants a closer look at what roams around the rest of the world.Oh, and a bonus, the book has a collection of witty lizard observations from famous authors and naturalist.Quite fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outlines not just facts, but also common fiction
This natural history of lizards includes the chameleon, iguana, gecko and more, pairing brilliant close-up color photos by John Netherton with a scientific and popular survey by Badger which outlines not just facts, but common fiction about different lizards. David Badger's Lizards is a very fine guide which will serve as both a leisure browse and a library reference. ... Read more
