Product Description
Long confined to the study of nationality, citizenship was not always considered a major concern of social scientists. In recent decades, however, the concept of citizenship has generated significant interest and intellectual debate in a variety of academic contexts. Globalization is changing the relationships between actors on the national and international stage and shifting the balance of power between them. These changes have spawned a wealth of scholarship across social science disciplines. The essays in Law and Citizenship add to this lively discourse and provide a framework for analyzing citizenship in an increasingly globalized world. A number of fundamental issues are addressed: How are traditional notions of citizenship erecting borders against those who are excluded? What are the impacts of changing notions of state, borders, and participation on our concepts of citizenship? Within territorial borders, to what extent are citizens able to participate, given that the principles of accountability, transparency, and representativeness remain ideals? There are numerous implications of the concept of citizenship for law and public policy in a number of different fields. International law, both private and public, poverty law, immigration law, constitutional law, history, political science, and sociology all reflect concepts of citizenship. Law and Citizenship will appeal to scholars and students in law and politics as well as those interested in the idea of citizenship in contemporary society. ... Read more

Product Description
Immigration is one of the most controversial topics of the decade. Citizens and pundits from across the political spectrum argue for major and disparate changes to American immigration law. Yet few know what American immigration law actually is and how it functions. Everyday Law for Immigrants is an ideal guide for U.S. citizens who want a better understanding of our immigration laws as well as for migrants who make the United States their home. Romero deftly and comprehensively explains the basic challenges immigrants and foreign nationals face not only within formal immigration policy but also within American domestic law generally, including rules promulgated by federal, state, and local entities that affect noncitizens. A concise and accessible primer for interested citizens, noncitizens, and their advocates, this book provides a bird s eye view of U.S. immigration history, practice, and procedure, and constructively addresses the many legal issues in areas such as education, housing, and employment that affect foreigners who reside here. It includes easy-to-understand examples and an extensive appendix of print and Internet resources for further help. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Complicated
Everyday Law for Immigrants is the most understandable description of US immigration law I have read and if that isn't enough it contains a timely and surprising bonus. The bonus is that in it's discussion of the relationship and history of state versus federal immigration law it explains why Arizona SB1070 is almost certainly unconstitutional and will eventually be voided by the Supreme Court. This is a result of a Supreme Court ruling in 1849.It is very well explained in the book and is worth reading even if you don't agree.
In this short readable book Romero takes one through the agency and acronym thicket that is our immigration law and describe the hidden logic. The book is occasionally ironic and mostly jargon free. (this is high praise when dealing with a schizophrenic organization like DHS) It also has excellent footnotes and a very useful resource guide.
Everyday Law for Immigrants take a complicated set of laws and procedures and turns it into an understandable, although not palatable, scheme.Well done. ... Read more

Product Description
This book assesses the role of the federal judiciary in immigration and the institutional evolution of the Supreme Court and the U.S. Courts of Appeals. Neither court has played a static role across time. By the turn of the century, a division of labor had developed between the two courts whereby the Courts of Appeals retained their original function as error-correction courts, while the Supreme Court was reserved for the most important policy and political questions. Anna O. Law explores the consequences of this division for immigrant litigants, who are more likely to prevail in the Courts of Appeals because of advantageous institutional incentives that increase the likelihood of a favorable outcome. As this book proves, it is inaccurate to speak of an undifferentiated institution called "the federal courts" or "the courts," for such characterizations elide important differences in mission and function of the two highest courts in the federal judicial hierarchy. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars all of the 5 star reviews were contrived
How can there possibly be such a disparity between readers of this book?People give it 5 stars or 1 star. That's strange isn't it?Yeah, it's because some of the profiles that give this book five stars are fictitious profiles. This book is trash, and everybody who's read it knows.

5-0 out of 5 stars I liked it.
This book containes a bit less information for skilled worker class immigration and employment search but I liked it. It offers an introduction to all categories for Canadian immigration if you are interested to know about all other categories then this is the book for you.It will take you to offical Canadian website for any update in policy. It is also packed with lots of websites for references and employment search.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
Simply awesome. This book reduced my dependence on computer with an internet connection, means I am carrying my PC with internet connection in the train on the bus and everywhere I want to. It is a portable handy resource with tons of information as per subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing
The information contained in this book are the same as you can find on the canadian immigration web site. On page "104", the auther has written a specimen to demonstrateprofiency in English languange if English isn't your first language. That specimen contains loads of grammer errors. Its simply not worth buying it.

Product Description

This book examines immigration law from a gender perspective. It shows how immigration law situates gender conflicts outside the national order, projecting them onto non-western countries, exotic cultures, clandestine labour and criminal organizations. In doing so, immigration law sustains the illusion that gender conflicts have moved beyond the pale of European experience. In fact, the classical feminist themes of patriarchy, the gendered division of labour and sexual violence are still being played out at the heart of Europe's societies, involving both citizens and migrants.

This collection of essays demonstrates how the seemingly marginal perspective of immigration law highlights Europe's unresolved gender conflicts and how a gender perspective can help us to rethink immigration law.

4-0 out of 5 stars Understand U.S. Immigration Law through examples.
The most striking thing about this book is the extensive use of examples throughout the book. One of the main problems in understanding the law is trying to figure out how it applies to your particular situation. The use of examples is one of the best ways for an author to explain the various aspects of any law. In this book, the author did such a fantastic job that I have picked up the book at various times in the last decade to figure out how I can solve my own particular immigration problem and I was able to fix it very fast. He does such a great job that I got carried away by the confidence the book inspires and decided to handle one of the more difficult immigration situations myself. It worked out alright but in hindsight, I should have taken the assistance of a lawyer to make things easier for myself.

Another tremendous advantage in using this book is the latest updates available through the author's website (you will have to find this yourself using Google since Amazon reviews are not allowed to have web addresses in them - any addresses will be removed automatically). Immigration law is constantly changing and it is risky to follow the advice of any book since it would be outdated the day it was printed. The author is a well known authority on the subject and in the past, I have seen that he has always been very prompt in posting updates to the book between editions and also giving his interpretations of the latest changes to the U.S. Immigration law.

One thing I was told by several immigration lawyers in 1997 is that you don't need to find a local lawyer for immigration related issues. I am not sure if this is still true but what it means is that you don't have to despair if you live in an area that doesn't have a great immigration lawyer. You can always find someone with a good reputation that may be in another state. Based on the number of immigration issues I have gone through, I would strongly recommend anyone in similar shoes to be armed with the knowledge gained through books like this one, but still consult a good lawyer (especially if you are in a complicated situation).

The final step that I have pending is becoming a U.S. citizen (I am a permanent resident right now) and I am using this book to take care of this by myself. I wish you all the best of luck and I hope you find this book as valuable as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
This is the best book on this subject available. I am a new citizen to this country, and it would have not happened so easily without this great book. Thank you, Mr. Wernick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very usefull and well written
This is an excellent book for anyone going through the hurdles of US Immigration. The author covers all bases and still keeps the text easy to read and easy to reference. I have seen Mr. Wernick speak and have read his authoritative newspaper column and this book lives up to his usual high standards. It is the only book of its kind you will need and with the high cost of legal advice, you will save time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't need a lawyer after reading this book
I just read the 3rd edition of professor Wernick's "U.S. Immigration and Citizenship" book and never felt more confident filing papers with the INS. Moreover, in his currently updated edition Allan Wernick explains the intricacies of the immigration law so clearly that even a layman can grasp its basic concepts. The procedures are illustrated by real stories, each one a distinct immigration problem, which translate the dry and complicated legal lingo into plain English that may be eastily understood in the immigrant communities. This very carefully designed book touches on all important aspects of the immigration procedures and explaines recent changes in the law.
Considering that every Thursday the author answers immigration questions in his Daily News column (I am an avid reader), I must say that Allan Wernick's book is the only up-to-date book on the market. Before you spend your money on a lawyer, I strongly recommend to check out Allan Wernick's "US Immigration and Citizenship." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nolo = Perfection!
This book is a more defined and focused version of Nolo's "How To Get A Green card" and deals exclusively on immigration for foreign citizen spouses or intended spouses of US citizens. As with every other Nolo legal book, this one is written by a specialized attorney with extensive experience and lays out the process in a simple to understand and easy to follow format. After reading this book one should be prepared to handle their own application for immigration and be well-prepared in the process. In the event you do ultimately need to hire a lawyer, after reading this book you will be able to intelligently discuss your case with your lawyer and more easily understand what your lawyer advises and why.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible resource
I am happy to report that we are approved. Immigration seems like an obstacle that is too big to overcome. My boyfriend and I were miserable living in two different countries. He proposed and we consulted a lawyer. With a little input from them, and a cost estimate of what it would cost for them to help, we decided to buy the book and figure it out ourselves.

I am so glad I understood the process before we went through it. We were able to figure out where to get married, how to file, how long he would be without a job, etc. We turned our application in in July. Received his work permit 2 months later, and had our appointment and approval within 4 months from turning in our application.

Anyone who is engaged or involved in an overseas relationship considering a true future should buy this book. Getting all the forms in order was by no means a simple process, but with a lot of dedication and this book to guide you- it is possible to do this without a lawyer.

Long distance relationships can work :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Physician---engaged to Colombian Lady
I have recently become engaged to abeautiful, wonderful and supremely intelligent Colombia Lady.
We had look at different wedding options and have also hired an Immigration attorney to help us decide the best approach to getting my fiancee to the USA. With all the issues about illegal immmigration we both wanted to be sure that all the "i's" were dotted and the "t's" crossed.
After a lengthy consultation with our attorney we found this book to be an invaluable companion and a source of information that we could sit down and "digest" at our leisure and simply move to the chapters that applied to our situation.
We would highly recommend this book as a "text" and a great reference source for anyone seeking to obtain a legal immigration status into the USA.
The information is complete, concise and easy to understand. The recommendations as stated in various parts of the chapters are certainly worth looking into.
Overall we wouldhighly recommend this book/text.

5-0 out of 5 stars very informative
So far it has given me the information I needed.
I am still in the process of getting a visa, so it will be needed in the future as well. There is a lot of paperwork and items to have completed to succeed in this process. It is nice to have this book as a guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saves lawyer fees
Great book, esp if your case is straight-forward and legal fees can still be over a couple thousand dollars. The book clearly explains when and what case situations require direct legal consultancy. I'd recommend the book even if your green card case is not straight-forward since the book arms you with the right questions to ask your lawyer (hence save time and $$ on fees). ... Read more
