Product Description
Processes of democratisation and the struggle for democracy have been a significant characteristic of political developments in most parts of the world during the last decade. This study examines the impact of these events on the mind and actions of those who struggle for democracy in Indonesia. Based on interviews with a large number of Indonesian pro-democracy activists as well as written material, the book contains a detailed analysis of the contemporary Indonesian pro-democracy movement and the political context in which its acts. Special attention is paid to the interesting connection between Indonesian Islam and democracy. The main focus is on how Indonesian pro-democracy actors draw lessons from events outside their country and adopt, adjust or reject foreign ideas.
With its theoretical focus and detailed empirical analysis the book should be of interest for scholars and students of democracy and democratisation as well as for those who are especially interested in Indonesian politics. ... Read more

Bresnan delivers an in depth look into how Indonesia's modern political economy has developed since the 1965 coup "that failed."He does an excellent job of analyzing how the different personalities and biases oftop leadership in Indonesia brought about the subsequent growths ordeclines in the economy. He further analyzes the role that the army, technocrats, students, press, and foreigners play in either supporting orconfronting the government in their efforts to affect change forIndonesia's prospective economy. ... Product Description
The fall of Suharto has drawn much media and academic attention but the focus has been on the elite perspective, the role of the regime and military, and little has been published on civil society. Gender issues are also often by-passed. Indonesia is at a crossroads and the greater involvement of civil society is being seriously considered for the first time by government representatives and demanded by civil society actors, political think-tanks and social commentators. This study, which covers the lead up to and ousting of Suharto up until the 2004 democratic elections, analyses the role of civil society in Indonesia's transition towards democracy by applying social movement theory and the framework of political opportunities. It shows the importance of social movements as civil society's primary catalysts for change, and the need for a strong civil society to take over where the social movements left off in order to consolidate attitudinal changes in the political, economic and social spheres. The actions and limitations of various parts of the Indonesian pro-democracy movement are discussed, providing case studies of three groups of actors - the student movement, the women's movement and the labour movement - focusing on times when they have joined forces to form social movements. The shortcomings and successes of the pro-democracy movement are discussed, as are the prospects for civil society in the future. ... Read more

Product Description
Based on a decade of research in Indonesia, this book provides an in-depth account of the military's struggle to adapt to the new democratic system after the downfall of Suharto's authoritarian regime in 1998. Unlike other studies of the Indonesian armed forces, which focus exclusively on internal military developments, Mietzner's study emphasizes the importance of conflicts among civilians in determining the extent of military involvement in political affairs. Analysing disputes between Indonesia's main Muslim groups, Mietzner argues that their intense rivalry between 1998 and 2004 allowed the military to extend its engagement in politics and protect its institutional interests. The stabilization of the civilian polity after 2004, in contrast, has led to an increasing marginalization of the armed forces from the power centre. Drawing broader conclusions from these events for Indonesia's ongoing process of democratic consolidation, the book shows that the future role of the armed forces in politics will largely depend on the ability of civilian leaders to maintain functioning democratic institutions and procedures. ... Product Description
In this timely work, leading scholars analyze the causes of the social, political, and economic crises that erupted in Indonesia in the late 1990s, the responses of the elite and civil society, and the prospects for continuing reform. In the process, they explore such issues as the relevance of the nation-state in an age of globalization, the role of Islam in politics and violence, the strengths and weaknesses of a negotiated route to democratic governance, the relationship of corruption and structural reform to economic growth, and the prospects for stability in Southeast Asia. The first book to grapple with the scale and complexity of this historic transition, this work offers a clear and compelling introduction to the Indonesian experience for students with an interest in the problems of post-colonial states, to scholars in comparative Asian studies, and to anyone seeking a serious yet accessible introduction to the world's largest Islamic democracy. 4-0 out of 5 stars can the democracy prevail
The transition referred to in the title concerns the end of Suharto's dictatorship and the setting up of a democracy. The text has contributions from several analysts, who speculate about Indonesia's prospects. Very difficult because of the myriad groups within Indonesia. Muslim fundamentalists who loathe any secular leanings in others. Acehnese separatists, some of who advocate outright independence. Ethnic Chinese, concentrated in the business sector. Secular Muslims, who perhaps form the largest group within Java. Plus a military that now defers to a civilian government, but which is unlikely to stand idly by if regions try to independence.

One chapter talks about the Indonesian parliament and its various factions. Not the least of which are the seats controlled by the military. The chapter also explains the extensive embedding of the militarywithin various government levels, right down to the kampongs (villages).

Another chapter on the economy documents the pervasive corruption of the Suharto era.Whenhis immediate family had their fingers in most major development projects. Since then, there has been definite progress in cleaning up the economy. Though few of Suharto's kin or cronies were ever indicted.

It is by no means clear from the book whether Indonesian democracy can prevail, given the mighty stresses on a huge, diverse and scattered population. Certainly, the recent coup by the Thai military a few days ago might be seen by the Indonesian military as encouragement to do likewise, were they ever to perceive Indonesia descending into chaos. ... 47. The Wilopo Cabinet, 1952-1953: A turning point in post-revolutionary Indonesia (Cornell University. Dept. of Far Eastern Studies. Modern Indonesia Project. Monograph Series)

Product Description
The Wilopo Cabinet was something of a watershed in post-revolutionary Indonesian politics. During its fourteen months of existence important changes developed in the constellation of political power among the major political parties, the President, and the army. And within one of the major parties there occurred a shift in the relative strength of leadership groups of such importance as to bring about significant changes in the party's political posture and in its relationship with several of the other parties. It was during this period that cabinet government was seriously undermined and parliament lost much of its prestige and power; and it was during these fourteen months that were set in train many of the developments which have dominated Indonesian political life in the last few years.

The key political events of this period are complex and confusing and have generally been but imperfectly understood outside of Indonesia. Yet failure to understand them can result in more than inability to understand the period itself. It will also make difficult any full and sound comprehension of the important developments of the past few years. Herbert Feith, in my judgment, has probed much further into the events of this period than any other non-Indonesian scholar. He has searched out a great deal of significant new data which he has analyzed with tools sharpened by long residence and research in Indonesia, interviews with many knowledgeable Indonesians and a full mastery of the Indonesian language. I believe he has presented as clear a picture of an important period of Indonesian history and of its shaping of subsequent events as is likely to emerge for some time. - George McT. Kahin

ABOUT THE AUTHORHerbert Feith (1930-2001) became familiar with Indonesia during 1951-53 and 1954-56 when he was an English Language Assistant with the Ministry of Information of the Republic of Indonesia. A citizen of Australia, he received an M.A. degree from the University of Melbourne in 1955 and a Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1961. He was a Research Fellow in the Department of Pacific History, Australian National University, from 1960 to 1962 and was Chair of Politics at Monash University from 1968 until 1974. ... Read more

Product Description
Cornell's interest in Indonesian Islam goes back many years and was given an early stimulus by the lectures of the late Hadji Agus Salim, who served as visiting professor at the university in 1953. One of the points which he made in his lectures was that, as a political force in his country, Islam had not assumed an importance at all commensurate with the fact that Indonesia was the largest predominantly Islamic country in the world. Hadji Salim was speaking at a time when Indonesia's principal Islamic party, the Masjumi, was yielding cabinet leadership to the first of many cabinets dominated by secular nationalists. Today, seventeen years later, Islamic political power in Indonesia has become considerably weaker, and the influential Modernist Islamic elements who previously led the Masjumi are without political focus and organization. Despite the fact that Modernist Islamic thinking is still inchoate and insufficiently articulated for political effectiveness, in the judgment of the present army leadership (as was the case with Sukarno) it is perceived as having latent power which if effectively channeled might threaten the present political balance. Attempts in 1966 to revive the Masjumi, which had been outlawed by President Sukarno in 1960, were thus banned by the army-dominated government of President Suharto; for it too regarded a Modernist-led Islamic party as a potential danger, and its prospects something to be circumscribed and undercut. Finally, in 1968, the Suharto government permitted the establishment of a Modernist-oriented party, the Partai Muslimin Indonesia, but it forbade the men of stature, who had earlier guided Masjumi thinking, to assume leadership of the new party. In describing and analyzing these developments, Mr. K. E. Ward of Monash University has made a significant contribution to our understanding of Modernist Islam's political failure in Indonesia. He has helped clarify why it has been impossible to build a consensus among Indonesia's Islamic leaders as to how Islamic doctrine is to be applied to Indonesia's political and socio-economic development. Mr. Ward's study thus helps one understand why Islam has not become a political force commensurate with the size of Indonesia's Muslim population. - George McT. Kahin, September 15, 1970 ... Product Description
A leader of Indonesian independence, joint proclaimer of the Republic of Indonesia, and the first Vice President of this Republic, Mohammad Hatta led an eventful life. Yet this quiet, principled, and highly idealistic man was often overshadowed by the charismatic President of the Republic, Sukarno. But without Hatta's practical ideas on social and economic reform (based on principles of democracy), the Sukarno regime was fated to end in political and economic disaster and Hatta was fated to end his life deeply disillusioned by politics and frustrated by his unrealized ideals. This well-written, almost novelistic, biography focuses on the political achievements of Hatta and the difficulties he faced in the struggle for independence and the formation of a new state. ... Product Description
From 2001, Indonesia's military commitment to the province of Aceh has resulted in the largest East Asian regional war since the 1975 East Timor invasion. Indonesia's War over Aceh presents the background and history of this war, investigating the domestic and regional implications of the conflict, at a time when the recent tsunami devastation has brought Aceh to the international forefront.

From monitoring and coercing Aceh's civilians to manipulating international perceptions, Indonesia's military-dominated state combined its fighting forces with politically repressive campaigns to destabilize and eliminate Acehnese resistance. The problems presented by rebellious Aceh expose many of the fundamental vulnerabilities of the Indonesian state itself, where possible secession has provoked quite extreme and often uncompromising reactions from Jakarta's ruling elites. So severe are the challenges posed by Acehnese separatism that Indonesia's post-New Order government has embraced a new era of censorship, disinformation and frenzied lobbying, all of which have distorted many important facts about the War and its causes.

Using military and intelligence doctrinal references, and extensive, original research, Davies reconstructs reported events, combatant forces, terminology and statistical data to expose many of the war's sensitive issues. It challenges others' preceding research by detailing the Indonesian military's mission, combat strains, and activity within political, operational and paramilitary realms. Drawing on Indonesian-Malay sources normally unseen by the English-speaking world, Indonesia's War over Aceh will be essential reading for regional specialists and those with an interest in third world conflict. ... Product Description
This book is about public institutions and their capacity to provide services to the public. In comparing the institutional capacity of different local government agencies to deliver services to the public, the book examines the institutional capacity of local government agencies in Indonesia and the role internal and external factors play in determining the service delivery capacity of public organisations. Internal factors refer to the organisational structure, managerial practices and the management of human resources in public organisations. External factors refer to the degree of bureaucratic and political accountability as well as the level of competition experienced by government agencies. This book enriches the existing development literature by developing our understanding of the ways in which internal and external factors strengthen or weaken the capacity of public sector institutions. ...
