The Bible for those who go "Unplugged"
The name of George Gruhn is to the dealing of fine acoustic instruments as "Martin" or "Gibson" is to the manufacturing or "Chet Atkins" is to playing.

This is THE coffee table book for the household that includes an acoustic instrument afficionado.Guitars are covered A to Z, but so are mandolins, ukes, banjos, dobros, etc.The photos are absolutely beautiful, and the accompanying text is VERY enlightening regarding the history of the instruments and the instrument makers.Included are the first published photos of Lead Belly's 12-string, plus a loving tribute to the first Martin D-45, probably the most valuable guitar in existence, and not just because it's first owner had his name, "Gene Autrey" inlaid into the fingerboard, before he became famous in movies as "Oklahoma's Singing Cowboy".

Fascinatin' stuff for the acoustic guy or gal in your family.

Some good ideas, and high standards, but problematic
As a guitar teacher, it is useful and interesting to hear other thoughts from people in the business.This guy is clearly a performing guitarist who later got into teaching and really does care about it but has a lot of biases.He assumes that guitar means electric.How extreme is that assumption?He suggests getting a very long cord when teaching classes because he apparently didn't even consider using an acoustic when moving around teaching groups.There are some good ideas here and it is clear he does care about teaching and about high standards.Read with skepticism, it is a worthwhile book, but do as I did and request it through the library system because you have no reason to read it more than once.

How to Make a Living Teaching Guitar
This thin book of about 75 pages is an o.k. starter place for those who are thinking about teaching guitar.I teach strictly Classical guitar so all of the ideas weren't useful to me, but it was still helpful.I disagree about answering the phone during the middle of giving a lesson as the author suggests doing.I feel that while I'm giving a lesson all of my attention should go to the student and zero to the person on the phone asking about lessons.That's what answering machines are for.If they are serious about wanting guitar lessons they will leave their name and number and I will call them back.

Just read it with a grain of salt as to if his ideas and ways of doing things are really practical to your desired way of teaching.To be real honest, you can get all that information and more by surfing the web about "teaching guitar". ... Read more

Rollicking fun for musicians
This book of trios contains fun and beautiful music - something any number of instruments can use in performance.The selections made by Watson are excellent, and they can be played by any intermediate student, on throughto professionals.Rhythms are basic, and most dynamic and musicalinterpretation will need to be added by performers, as there is littleediting, but I personally like that aspect.The songs speak for themselvestoo, with much inherent phrasing.The melodies of the faster pieces arebright and jaunty, and the slower movements have some lyrical and dolcemoments. ...
