Product Description

Multiobjective optimization deals with solving problems having not only one, but multiple, often conflicting, criteria. Such problems can arise in practically every field of science, engineering and business, and the need for efficient and reliable solution methods is increasing. The task is challenging due to the fact that, instead of a single optimal solution, multiobjective optimization results in a number of solutions with different trade-offs among criteria, also known as Pareto optimal or efficient solutions. Hence, a decision maker is needed to provide additional preference information and to identify the most satisfactory solution. Depending on the paradigm used, such information may be introduced before, during, or after the optimization process. Clearly, research and application in multiobjective optimization involve expertise in optimization as well as in decision support.

This state-of-the-art survey originates from the International Seminar on Practical Approaches to Multiobjective Optimization, held in Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, in December 2006, which brought together leading experts from various contemporary multiobjective optimization fields, including evolutionary multiobjective optimization (EMO), multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) and multiple criteria decision aiding (MCDA).

This book gives a unique and detailed account of the current status of research and applications in the field of multiobjective optimization. It contains 16 chapters grouped in the following 5 thematic sections: Basics on Multiobjective Optimization; Recent Interactive and Preference-Based Approaches; Visualization of Solutions; Modelling, Implementation and Applications; and Quality Assessment, Learning, and Future Challenges.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting
Although there are only six enchanted lands in this book, they are wonderfully presented. Each enchanted land is jam packed with pictured information. The sidebars give you points of interest as well as danger points. This is a fun way to teach your child map reading basics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for map skills - and imagination
This is an instant favorite for children and adults. The maps are so colorful and detailed; this book is a visual feast! The different lands are fun to investigate, especially if your child is familiar with the story behind each map.Explore the worlds of Jack and the Beanstalk, The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and Aladdin through maps. This is a book that can grow with a child.A preschooler would enjoy this book and as they get older, introduce them to more and more of the map concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book at Perfect Time
This was one of those books that we happened to introduce our daughter to at the perfect time. She is 5.5, loves fairy tales, and has recently been very interested in Peter Pan, and we are teaching her about maps. She loved the book right away! She loves to have an adult read her the directions while she moves her finger around on the map.She also loves finding interesting items/people in the busy map pictures (think "Where's Waldo").From an educational standpoint, with this book she was able to quickly understand how to use coordinate grids, keys, scale, cardinal and ordinal directions, and geographical vocabulary, all without the book being overtly didactic.Rather, it was just a fun story she could be a part of (and learning these things was an inherent by-product). I would guess most 4-8 year olds, but especially those who like fairy tale and pretend play, will enjoy this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun, helps broaden the imagination
This is a great book that the whole family enjoys. It's fun to pick a map and since everyone knows the fairy tales already- to make new endings or stories and characters based on the wonderful maps. I've bought more of these as baby shower gifts to add to family libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have as much fun with it as my daughter!
This book is great, it really brings life to the fairy tales like Snow White and even Peter Pan with big colorful maps of everything you read about in the stories. We have a lot of fun going over the map, and I really think for a youngster 4-7 or so it is perfect for their age and imagination. It really puts a picture to the story, and makes the fairy tales all the more real.

The maps are very colorful and vibrant, and really took some imagination and time to put together. There are a lot of fun things packed in, I really enjoy it as much as my daughter.Haven't reviewed many things but HAD to write one for this because every parent needs this on the bookshelf. ... Product Description

Want to find every pizza place within a 15-mile radius? Where the dog parks are in a new town? The most central meeting place for your class, club or group of friends? The cheapest gas stations on a day-to-day basis? The location of convicted sex offenders in an area to which you may be considering moving? The applications, serendipitous and serious, seem to be infinite, as developers find ever more creative ways to add to and customize the satellite images and underlying API of Google Maps.

Written by Schuyler Erle and Rich Gibson, authors of the popular Mapping Hacks, Google Maps Hacks shares dozens of tricks for combining the capabilities of Google Maps with your own datasets. Such diverse information as apartment listings, crime reporting or flight routes can be integrated with Google's satellite imagery in creative ways, to yield new and useful applications.

The authors begin with a complete introduction to the "standard" features of Google Maps. The adventure continues with 60 useful and interesting mapping projects that demonstrate ways developers have added their own features to the maps. After that's given you ideas of your own, you learn to apply the techniques and tools to add your own data to customize and manipulate Google Maps. Even Google seems to be tacitly blessing what might be seen as unauthorized use, but maybe they just know a good thing when they see one.

With the tricks and techniques you'll learn from Google Maps Hacks, you'll be able to adapt Google's satellite map feature to create interactive maps for personal and commercial applications for businesses ranging from real estate to package delivery to home services, transportation and more. Includes a foreword by Google Mapstech leads, Jens and Lars Rasmussen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Written For A Computer Programmer And Not The Average Joe
This book is extremely detailed and complete for those readers who already speak the language of computer and API programming. Some of the projects baffled me - I still don't get the point of the Google maps ghost, and also found that some of the GPS projects are now outdated, which is to be expected from any cutting-edge technology book that went to press three years ago.

It's probably a good time for the publisher to bring out an updated edition of this book.A valuable focus would be on the addition of GPS-enabled PDAs and Smart Phones. With Google's free GPS mapping program, I have been able to push my T-Mobile MDA to the limits, turning a basic wireless device into a fully functional GPS device that works in real time. Many of the GPS project suggestions in this book, complicated and requiring some extreme technical skill, are now done automatically with Google's GPS mapping program.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information that's out of date
The book is interesting and has many good ideas and some valuable information.Be aware, however, that the advanced hacks (those dealing with calling the API from your own code) are based on a now obsolete version of the API.So, for example, Hack 62 that tells you how to find that longitude and latitude of an address doesn't tell you that you can accomplish the task via Google now.Hack 58 (Find the right zoom level) has one (of three) technique that uses an undocumented API that has, apparently, gone away. And, of course, it doesn't provide the easy way to do it using the current API.

I'm not faulting the authors for not seeing into the future. The book is well written and engaging.Just be aware that parts of it are already out of date.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Google Maps book
If you'd like to program or create sites with mapping tools, this book will really help.

Short and direct chapters. Easy to read and learn.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable content from all perspectives
I've read both this and the ExtremeTech "Hacking Google Maps," and both have their place, but I found this one to be much more valuable.

It doesn't contain any introductory information to the API, which some may be looking for, but it's not something that I would expect to see in a Hacks book anyway. With the v2 release of the API in April 2006, Google's own documentation has gotten a lot better, and it's the best place to go for a tutorial.

The book contains a great collection of hacks from all perspectives: users looking to get the most out of Google Maps, power users looking to push the functionality in new ways, and developers using the API. There's also a good overview of some popular mashups from the mashups' developers perspectives, and extensions to the API (e.g. TLabel, TPhoto).

Because there are so many contributors, you'll notice a change in tone and writing style throughout the book; and different coding practices are easy to spot, e.g. one code sample might use a standard, documented JS call, while another uses a homegrown function to accomplish the same thing. Another drawback is that the book is written to v1 of the API, which was replaced months ago, although is backwards compatible. This doesn't affect readability or value, but several of the undocumented features in the book are in fact documented in v2!

Great book, filled with useful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Google Maps Hacks: Tips & Tools for Geographic Searching and Remixing (Hacks) (Paperback)

Are you a Google application developer? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Rich Gibson and Schuyler Erle, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that shows you how to take full advantage of the mapping capabilities in Google Local.

Gibson and Erle, begin by showing you how to look up locations, get driving directions, look at satellite pictures, share links to maps in e-mails and on web pages, generate links to maps from a spreadsheet, and use del.icio.us. Then, the authors show you how to put a map on your page, capture user clicks, create a slideshow connected with a map, create custom icons, and measure distances. Next, they cover a variety of mashups, from mapping the news, to seeing where criminals "work," to weather maps, to answering the question: where is the Space Telescope right now. The authors then help you find the cheapest gas near you, load driving directions into your GPS to take with you, look at your GPS track logs, explore hiking trails, figure out why your cell phone doesn't work at home, and even beat a traffic ticket. They continue by showing you how to geocode your photos on Flickr, set up a blog that knows about place, geocode literature, and examine the choices that go into which satellite images are included. Then, the authors show you how to tweak and extend the Google map. Finally, they show you how to use a clustering algorithm so that your own points fit properly on a map, create your own map tiles, connect to a database, use web standards to display other data on your maps, an even figure out if your kids are likely to barf.

This most excellent book will show you how to make the most of Google Maps. More importantly, you'll find the tools and inspiration you need right in this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review by Michael Folkolff
This book details the author's vision of the evolution of cartography taking into consideration developments in computer technology and software.Peterson argues persuasively that in the future mapping will integrate GIS, remote sensing, and computer graphic techniques with multimedia software and Internet information capabilities. The computer itself will become the principal medium for map compilation and display.Map reproducation will be specifically for the computer rather than such reproduction using a CRT as an intermediary between the virtual map and hardcopy.Maps will be compiled interactively by the reader and will include both traditional maps and tabular data as well as a reliance on video tape loops and animation processes. The use of animation processes will provide a new dimension for representing spatial information that, for some purposes, will be superior to current static maps.Map data will be stored in a variety of formats that can be compiled in many different ways depending on the preference of the map reader.Map compilation will no longer be a linear process guided by the rigid procedure leading to a single paper product.Instead the map reader will choose the information to be displayed and the method for displaying the final form from a menu of options. The final product will concentrate on the transmission of information to the reader rather than on the map itself.Nevertheless, Peterson is a realist and does not altogether discount the need for paper maps.

The book fulfills the author's objective of presenting a probable next stage in the development of cartogrpahy. He describes a wide range of disparate software and hardware that are currently used in geography, from desktop mapping systems to statistical packages, and shows their potential for use when integrated with cartography. His software examples are from both DOS and MAC systems befitting a vision of the future where boundaries between software types should be less restrictive. The strength of the presentation is the integration of a wide variety of software and hardward for cartographic applications. The book was published in 1995 and already there are elements of Peterson's vision that can be found on the Internet and in available software.

The book is well written and easy to read.As a textbook, its strength is that the book has a distinct objective and goal, explaining interactive and animated cartography. It offers the student a vision of the future. Many texts have an encyclopedic feel, presenting information on what is and what was.It is refreshing for an author to look to the future: a future which will indeed be the world of the student. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors
If you buy this book you will eventually learn JavaScript. Unfortunately you will learn it while you are spending hours searching the internet for the reasons why many of the examples in the book don't work. It is unfortunate that there are so many errors in the book. Only about half of them are covered by the errata page on the books companion website. Unlike many similar books this one's website does not have a forum for users to ask questions or submit errata. The books style is easy to understand and most explanations of the code are clear, but the errors are so frustrating that I would recommend a different text than this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book of Javascript that I have found...
Out of all the Javascript books that I have owned or found in the library, this book seems to be clearly written and easy to follow. I am a techie but have not found a Javascript book that I have liked or have found it clear enough to follow until I found this book. It starts out very slowly but this is not bad for beginners (I am included in this group).

I agree there are some typos in the book; I have ran across a few of them but they have been minor (so far that is)...

All of the book examples are online and can be downloaded. There are some examples that have external js files that are included online so this is not an issue...

I just find it amazing that their are a lot of books on programming languages but most of them are either poor organized and/or written...

He presents the information in a simple way that you can start using right away. The biggest problem for people starting out is too much detailed explanation that you can learn later as you get the hang of the language. This book is organized in a logical and practical approach. You can start writing code almost right away and you don't have to be a rocket surgeon. The back of the book has projects, a language reference section and a good index. The proof is in the pudding; it works.

Product Description
Fortunately for the many admirers of his architecture, theories, and designs, Frank Lloyd Wright was not only a lover of space and a man of vision--he was also a man who liked to save things. Since he opened his first office in Chicago in 1893, Wright held on to drawings, sketches, notes, photographs, manuscripts, and correspondence. Many of those artifacts survive today in his official archive at Taliesin West in Arizona. Produced in conjunction with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, this extraordinary book offers a fresh presentation of the documents of one of the world's most famous architects. It is, in effect, a museum in a book. The unique book experience contains 25 interactive, three-dimensional features, removable facsimiles of original documents, never-before-published architectural sketches, and an audio CD containing excerpts from Wright's weekly addresses at his architectural compound, as well as television interviews. Following the proven success of other Wright titles, this is an engaging journey into the life and work of the iconic American architect through words, pictures, and artifacts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest, most awesome book I ever purchased!
This book is absolutely amazing!I have never owned another book matching the caliber of this masterpiece.I don't think you even have to be a Frank Lloyd lover to appreciate this book.It is for everyone who can appreciate art, architecture, and learning through various ways about the genius of Wright. The book box cover, the carefully laid out plans and packets in the book illustrating the drafting and the various buildings this man created is fun and exciting. The CD is complementary in that it captures the essence of this man whose ego was the size of his largest creations----albeit he has every right to think himself the best architect who lived in the 19th and 20th centuries. If he were still with us, he would include the 21st century as a categorical imperative that he is/was the greatest architect of all time.Oh what a character he was, and oh what an absolute mind he beheld---and as genius of his craft he had all the right to be self righteous, egotistical and unapologetic. This is a downright amazing book.I am buying two, one to keep in perfect condition and the other to immerse myself in and learn and teach and adore.I will probably buy even more of this particular book as gifts--whether the person has no idea who FLW is or if they are professional architects themselves, all will be educated and enamored by it and it's accompaning accessories.

I saw this book and its inserts while browsing in the gift shop at Taliesin West. I couldn't buy it at that time because I didn't have any room to spare in my luggage for our flight home. I found it for a good price on Amazon, though, and ordered it as soon as I returned home. It's a beautiful book, with interesting text. The inserts, though, are what sold me on this book. The reproductions of correspondence, sketches and plans are so well done that some of them look original and authentic. It's a great addition to my library of books relating to Frank Lloyd Wright.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frank Lloyd Wright Portfolio
This is a spectacular value - it gives an intimate glimpse into the life of a genius at work - can't imagine a better way to do it.And the price is way to low for the value received.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
As an Architect student, I love this book. I show all my friends how a real great mind works. Wright is my favorite architect, so when I was this it was a given ofr me to buy it. I highly suggest checking your local book store first, because I bought this EXACT one for 13 dollars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids!
I purchased this for my 2nd grader's geography class. He loves it! It is interactive and very colorful. Each section covers a country/region. It contains not only the maps but relevant information like population, geology, capital city, and economy. To make geography more interesting, I use this book with one of those large laminated world maps. I give him a white board marker and have him find the country or region on the laminated map. He loves making a BIG circle around the area we are going to study, talk about it a bit, and move on to the specifics using this book. ... Read more
