5-0 out of 5 stars Civil rights reference
A book I think should be in every public and school library. No one book tells all or could include every incident and every hero or villian but this book did its best. It captures the feel of the times with photos and written material. Author gave an objective perspective naming the names, the issues and their timelines without commentary. (I put the labels on the saints and the sinners) A lot of the events I remembered but I didn't know the "back story" and some I never had heard of. It was a great source of information for discussion on facing our fears, who stood up, and why did it take a struggle for civil rights.

5-0 out of 5 stars This deserves more than six stars!
Wow! I've always been interested in the Civil Rights movement, so naturally I was drawn to this book when I spied it in the bookstore. I especially liked that I got a discount on it, which is always a nice thing. I paged through it in the bookstore, was impressed, bought it, took it home, and was just blown away. It's a very informative and outstanding book on the subject and if you are interested in this topic, then you should definitely check this book out. It also contains scores of photographs, so it is somewhat like an encyclopedia. It definitely helped me gain a better understanding of this dark part of our history.

Once again - WOW!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!
I highly recommend this book to teenagers because it tells you about a lot of things that you don't learn in the classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars exceptional view of history
The Civil Rights Chronicle belongs in every library, every school, and every home. This honest look at the enslavement of people is not to be missed. The struggle for independence and freedom is chronicled here for all, black, white, or 'other', to read and understand. There are so many things in this world that should never be allowed to happen again!

Yet they continue to happen. ... Read more

Product Description
As one of the most commonly taught stories of people’s struggles for social justice, the Civil Rights Movement has the capacity to help students develop a critical analysis of United States history and strategies for change. However, the empowering potential is often lost in a trivial pursuit of names and dates. Putting the Movement Back into Civil Rights Teaching provides lessons and articles for classrooms and communities on how to go beyond a heroes approach to the Civil Rights Movement.

The book includes interactive and interdisciplinary lessons, readings, writings, photographs, graphics, and interviews, with sections on education, economic justice, citizenship, culture, and reflections on teaching about the Civil Rights Movement. The book features lessons on the role of women in the Movement and makes connections to Chicano, Asian, Native American and international struggles for social justice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging the myths
There are so many myths when it comes to the Civil Rights Movement and so often it is reduced to a few holiday's and key speeches. This book not only teaches us about the ordinary, everyday citizens who sacrificed and stood for change, but also invokes critical thinking and connects us to our past so we better understand our role in fighting injustice today. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This new reader comprises an extensive collection of primary and secondary documents of the American Civil Rights movement. These documents are complemented by analytical and interpretive essays by the editor, setting these documents in their historical, social, and political context.

The seeds for the modern Civil Rights Movement were planted nearly a century ago within the black Baptist Church, labor unions, the black press, and organizations like the NAACP and the SNYC. Each of the seven sections of this book present a carefully chosen selection of newspaper, magazine, and journal articles, letters, speeches, reports, and legal documents, all chronicling the one aspect of the movement for black rights from the earliest days of post-Civil War segregation to the present. The works of eminent scholars, historians, legislators, and jurists alternate with the voices of movement leaders and followers, black politicians, black entertainers, and average citizens, all blending together to tell the story of struggle, failures, and successes on the road to equality for Black Americans. ...
