Editorial Review

Product Description
In recent years, political parties and national legislatures in more than one hundred countries have adopted quotas for the selection of female candidates to political office. Despite the rapid international diffusion of these measures, most research has focused on single countries - or, at most, the presence of quotas within one world region. Consequently, explanations for the adoption and impact of gender quotas derived from one study often contradict with findings from other cases. Quotas for Women in Politics is the first book to address quotas as a global phenomenon to explain their spread and impact in diverse contexts around the world. It is organized around two sets of questions. First, why are quotas adopted? Which actors are involved in quota campaigns, and why do they support or oppose quota measures? Second, what effects do quotas have on existing patterns of political representation? Are these provisions sufficient for bringing more women into politics? Or, does their impact depend on other features of the broader political context? Synthesizing literature on quota policies, this book develops a framework for analyzing the spread of quota provisions and the reasons for variations in their effects. It then applies this framework to examine and compare campaigns for reserved seats in Pakistan and India, party quotas in Sweden and the United Kingdom, and legislative quotas in Argentina and France. ... From the supplier: The processes of religious nationalism appear to follow a predictable pattern. Religious nationalism can be based on religious ties to land, religious ties to ideas, or a combination of the two. Ideological religious nationalists have historically organized in response to significant changes in their country's politics or economy. They believe that peaceful solutions lie in replacing the designated enemy or authority with a religious framework using violence if necessary. The ideal authority framework may include a limited form of democracy governed by the will of their God.

Product Description
Despite growing pressure for the death penalty's abolition, the year 2000 saw over 1000 people executed in China, some 123 in Saudi Arabia, 75 in Iran, and 85 in the United States of America (figures: Amnesty International). In this new edition of his classic study Roger Hood, the acknowledged world authority on death penalty legislation, assesses the global status of capital punishment at the start of the new millennium.

The author explores the many changes that have taken place in the twelve years that have elapsed since the publication of the widely acclaimed first edition of The Death Penalty. The picture he reveals is a mixed one.The number of countries which have abolished the death penalty has increased at an unprecedented rate, although a few have subsequently re-introduced it.The range of offences subject to the death penalty has contracted in many countries, but expanded in others. There are new facts to report on the number of executions carried out: much more is known about the extent to which states abide by the United Nation's Safeguards Guaranteeing Protection of the Rights of Those Facing the Death Penalty; and much has been published, particularly in the United States of America on the legal, ethical and practical aspects of administering capital punishment and on public attitudes towards it.The time is therefore ripe for this new revised and updated edition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Comprehensive Survey Available
Professor Hood's _The Death Penalty: A Worldwide Perspective_, 3rd Ed. is the most comprehensive review of the death penalty around the world that I have ever found. Professor Hood was a consultant to the United Nations' study of capital punishment and the observance of safeguards for those facing the death penalty (conducted every 5 years).

This book draws not only on material from that survey but on a vast array of other available academic materials but is presented in a very accessible way and is presented objectively. There is very little presented in terms of statistical analysis as the survey is much more of a work to understand what the standards are in each country that retains the death penalty and how they stand in regards to the international safeguards and standards (such as those set by the UN Economic and Social Council).

Professor Hood is critical of countries that refuse to provide any figures on their practices of the death penalty or cooperate with the UN survey, but is able to draw on other sources to provide some idea of what is going on in those countries.

This book is an essential part of any library for those interested in Human Rights or especially in the death penalty. It does not hide behind rhetoric and gives the most objective and comprehensive material available in a single volume. It is footnoted and has 263 pages excluding the index but including 3 appendices (245 without appendices). ... Read more
