Really Awesome!
Great tutorial. Video lessons let you pick and choose your topics to learn. The instructor is really good and explains the functionality clearly. I thought the printable books were really helpful as well. I have a few titles from TeachUcomp and find them the best way to learn. So much better than buying a boring book!

Forget it Buy a Book


This DVD/CD product to learn Crystal Reports is not worth the plastic it is written on.

Someone rambels on about all the Icons, menues, but does not teach you as much as the free tutorial that comes with Crystal reports.

There is a 8 X 10 plastic cheat sheet that is worth more than this CD.

You will want to print the book out, but there are better books that actualy address some projects.

I would not recommend that anyone buy this Mastering Crystal Reports Made Easy, the name is wrong, it is just a waste of money.

I found "The Complete Reference Crystal Reports" by Beck much more useful and a better buy.

Inexpensive and Informative
This very affordable little book gave me the information I needed when I needed it and at a price that didn't make me wince.I wanted to find out something about domains (What in the world?); and I didn't want to pay $[...] at Barnes and Noble for the education.(I'm not called Cheap Mike for nothing!)Oh, I'd been around the net long enough to know the information was out there--but in a terribly disorganized and fragmented fashion; and besides, staring at a computer screen for hours hurt my aging eyes.Then along came the Kindle and little inexpensive books like this one.
I was dubious at first:something worth reading for less than three bucks?On the other hand even I am willing to gamble at these prices.And I won.This little book not only answered my questions, it piqued my curiosity and led me in a completely unexpected direction.
The first short chapter is called "What is a Domain Name?"Exactly what I wanted to know and I didn't have to plow through the mountains of verbiage that accompanies books with titles like "Learn this or that in 24 Hours" or "The Idiot's Guide" at fifty bucks a whack!

Clear, precise and extremely useful!
This book is a must-have for all who need to get started with IronPython. A triumph of clear intelligible language with numerous examples from the world of dynamic programming, this is simply the best book on one of the best implementations of Python.

It's good, but....
I liked the book, but I'm a web developer and all of the winforms stuff turned me off. I thought Python was a great web development language? I know it is versatile, but I would have preferred web focused examples. Not a biggie, but it was a big reason why I skipped some big sections with all the win forms setup code right in the book. How helpful is that really anyway?

If you are a .NET person who is curious about Python, or a Python person who has an interest in .NET - you need this book
Disclaimer: I'm friends with both the authors and was sent a freebie review copy by the publisher, so I'm bound to be breathlessly gushing in this review. Fortunately, that's easy to do, because the book really is great. (Except for Christian's chapters... Joke!)

Having spent some years working with .NET, and with a series of intriguing personal experiments in Python under my belt, I originally approached IronPython some years ago with a modicum of trepidation. I feared thatthe weld between the two would be intrusively visible, forming distracting differences from regular Python. I feared for the execution environment, the data types, and perhaps even the syntax itself.

Experience with IronPython showed these worries were needless. I have found IronPython to be a remarkably pleasant marriage - the same elegant language we know and love, given first-class status in the .NET runtime. Gifted with seamless interoperability with other .NET languages, the dowry from such an alliance turns out to be all the .NET libraries in the world, including the substantial and highly capable .NET standard libraries themselves.

IronPython is, to some extent, a niche implementation of a niche language.However, its position seems to potentially be one of importance and strength. Not only does it allow Python programmers to use .NET libraries - and does so admirably, but it also allows the existing legions of .NET programmers to be introduced to the joys of Python. They will fall in love with it, and will be able to introduce it into their workplaces in a way that is politically acceptable. After all, it is now simply another .NET language. Since .NET is orders of magnitude more popular than Python, this could turn out to be an important source of future Python adoption.

This book is aimed to satisfy programmers coming from both the Python and the .NET worlds, and in this it seems to succeed.It starts with quick overviews of concepts from each: 30 pages about Python as a language, and 17 pages about .NET as an environment (data types, events, delegates, Windows Forms, etc) - just enough to get everyone up to speed regardless of background, but without being so verbose as to turn anyone off with a surfeit of material they are already familiar with. Despite being brief, these sections are packed with detail and very pragmatic, focusing on real-world usesuch as inheriting from existing .NET types, and solving some common problems like creating Windows Forms applications from IronPython.

This style of practical and densely informative content is continued throughout. Straight after the opening sections, we dive right in with another rapid-fire chapter, demonstrating common IronPython techniques by writing a non-trivial application. Woven around this ongoing example, the chapter discusses many immediately important topics, including duck typing,Python protocols, MVC, using Windows Forms to build a GUI, tab pages, dialogs, menus, toolbars, images, saving text files, .NET Streams, text file encodings, Python exceptions and lambda functions. These diverse topics are covered rapidly but thoroughly, giving the reader enough information about each to be able to use them together from IronPython to create a useful project.

Having covered these foundations, the book then moves on to address some specific areas in more detail. The following chapter headings give you some idea of the topics which are explored in depth:

* First-class functions in action with XML - demonstrates pragmatic use of functions as first-class objects, and higher-order functions (functions that take other functions as arguments and return modified versions.) and of course decorators. These are shown in use, appropriately paired up with the .NETXmlWriter and XmlReader classes, demonstrating event driven parsing of XML.
* Properties, dialogs and Visual Studio - Python properties, .NET dialogs, and using IronPython in Visual Studio. This sounds like a straightforward chapter, but as you might guess, the book gets deep into the topics and is jammed full of information. By the end of the chapter you'll have added to the example application to create document observers, used BinaryFormatter to serialise objects, and touched on Python's pickle equivalent.
* Agile Testing: where dynamic typing shines - From the unittest module and creating tests, through mock objects, listeners, monkey patching, dependency injection and functional testing. This is a dense chapter in a dense book, touching along the way on Python attribute lookup rules, bound and unbound methods, asynchronous execution for functional testing. My only criticism is that it's clearly hard for developers to 'get' testing until they have hands-on experience of it, so this single-chapter, while very thorough in explaining how to test, has an ambitious remit, and doesn't have enough space to explain much of why we test. I guess this is partially my own bias shining through here - I regard testing as quite literally the most important thing to happen in computer science since the invention of the compiler, and would encourage anyone interested to go and read as much as they can about it.
* Metaprogramming, protocols and more - More Python protocols, dynamic attribute access, and metaclasses. The sorts of things that in a static language would be deep black magic, or else completely impossible, but here they are just the right sort of crazy. Read, enjoy, and unlearn. We see how to create a profiling decorator, that modifies the functions you pass to it, wrapping them in stopwatch timing calls. We also learn about some of the more advanced integration of IronPython with the .NET CLR, including static compilation of IronPython code into assemblies, and one of the very few additions to Python syntax that IronPython has been obliged to provide - the typing of .NET arrays and generics. You'll never need to use generics yourself (in Python, everything is a generic), and you'll never want to go back to typed containers if you can avoid it. However, you may need to deal with some from an existing C# API, and this is how you do it.

Whew! We're only halfway through! The remaining chapters are equally detailed, but I'm going to start skimming through them somewhat. They cover the interactions of IronPython with more advanced .NET topics such as:

* Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and IronPython - WPF is the DirectX user interface library that is a successor to Windows Forms. This includes XAML, an XML dialect for describing user interfaces, decoupling their implementation from application logic.
* Windows System Administration with IronPython - using IronPython as a scripting language for sysadmin automation tasks, from the simple, such as copying files, to the complex, such as Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), administration of remote machines, and a substantial discussion on the uses of PowerShell with IronPython.
* IronPython and ASP.NET - building a web-based front end to the sample application developed earlier. Reusable controls.
* Databases and Web Services - using ADO.NET to work with databases, and using SOAP and REST.
* Silverlight: IronPython in the browser - creating Silverlight applications, and accessing the browser DOM from them.
* Extending IronPython with C#/.NET - all about creating C# class libraries for use in IronPython, calling unmanaged code from IronPython, and creating interfaces on your C# classes to provide dynamic, Pythonic behaviour. It also includes dynamic compilation of assemblies at runtime, which opens the door to advanced code-generation techniques.
* Embedding the IronPython Engine - many developers might want to provide IronPython as a scripting language within their own application, and this chapter shows you how.

Alright, that's it! There are appendices:

* A whirlwind tour of C# - in case anyone wants more guidance while looking at some of the C# code or concepts that are discussed throughout the book.
* Python magic methods - a description of all the Python magic double-underscore methods, which is a fabulous resource, one which l haven't seen collected anywhere else, and have been referring back to ever since I read the book.

So there you have it. If you haven't inferred already, I learned absolutely heaps from this book, even though it's about a language and environment I've been using every day for years. I think I can say without any equivocation that this is the best IronPython book in the world.

If dynamic languages make you break out in hives, or if .NET makes you think of Darth Vader, then you shouldn't touch this book with a barge pole. However, if you're a .NET person who is curious about Python (and believe me, you should be), or if you're a Python person who fancies .NET - maybe for DirectX or Silverlight or any number of other wonderful things, then you should absolutely go directly to the IronPython in Action book website or Amazon, right this second, and buy it.

I've always wanted to use Python more. Mostly I use it to write little one off scripts when I want to move a bunch of files around or parse some text. I was really excited when Manning asked to to review IronPython in Action because I wanted to dive a little deeper into Python and possibly use it in some web applications. "IronPython in Action" makes it easy to get started using IronPython right away.

The book starts out with an introduction to Python itself and continues with a general description of how IronPython can use .NET types. It starts off by showing how to build a Winforms app using IronPython. If anything exposes the cruel, unnecessary complexity of .NET, it's got to be a Winforms app. The IronPython examples are easy to follow and it's always fun to create and manipulate a Winforms app using the IronPython console.

Chapter 4 talks about using Design patterns in IronPython. This is a refreshing change from most language books where patterns aren't mentioned at all. The chapter builds an IronPython application and uses the MVC pattern for the overall architecture and the command pattern for the implementation of the menu bar events.

Chapter 7 discusses agile testing and unit testing using IronPython. I almost dropped the book in amazement. Unit testing is almost never mentioned in any language book and is relegated to a niche or advanced topic. Find a book about any other .NET language that mentions unit testing that doesn't have the word "testing" in the title. This alone sets the quality of this book far above other language books I have read. It's not just enough, in my opinion, to discuss the syntax of the language. You have to teach the reader how to use the language in your everyday work.

The next section, section3, deals with a few core UI frameworks commonly used during .NET development, WPF, Silverlight, and ASP.NET, as well as showing how you can use IronPython to administer your system. Performing tedious tasks is my most common use of IronPython. I use it to automate moving files that fit a specific pattern out of my "downloads" directory to their proper places. It was great to learn a few new techniques for using IronPython in Powershell.

The last section talks about extending IronPython using C#, something which it sounds like should be avoided unless you just can't achieve decent performance with the equivalent IronPython code, and using IronPython as an embedde scripting engine. Python is used a lot in game programming because it's easy to embed. The nuts and bolts of the game engine will be written in low-level C/Assembly while the game logic and story is written in Python. I love the idea of having an embedded scripting engine in my application that will allow me to quickly extend my application at runtime. The user need to perform a new calculation on some data?Just send them an IronPython script and have them put it in a directory. It's a great idea and the book describes exactly how to do just that.

My overall feeling about this book is that it's a great book. The authors use the same humor and dry wit that Python is known for to great effect.Making the digestion of a very different language easier. I'm sure that as I continue to experiment with IronPython that I'll keep this book close at hand.

If you start with IronPython, buy this book
IronPython is the first dynamic language developed for the .Net plateform. At first, .Net didn't support this kind of language. This is something that keeps on coming back througout the book: you have to use some additional tricks to unleash the power of .Net dynamic and static languages.
The book starts with a general introduction to IronPython. A quick review of the language itself is followed by the use of the .Net assemblies. At the end of this part, one is comfortable enough to do some small IronPython programs.
The next part is dedicated to what IronPython offers thanks to Python and to its affiliation to .Net. The authors go through standard Python (battery included) and the somewhat associated .Net assemblies (some arguments on using one or the other could have been a big plus to the explanations), depending on what must be done. Because or (or thanks to) .Net, several pages are dedicated to XML, as it is needed to simplify the description of UIs. Also several useful designed patterns are presented with the .Net approach.
The next part starts with WPF, the official graphical interface, with several ways of using it (bridge from C#, XAML, ...). Then WMI (used for system administration) is handled, but from my point of view, it is the weirdest part. WMI has its own language which does not seem like C# or Python. Besides, PowerShell, presented as well as a way of doing system administration, has its own language. There is a book dedicated to PowerShell, so only the communication between IronPython and PowerShell is handled. So two additional languages in this chapter, perhaps too many (they are limited to this chapter).
IronPython is a .Net language, so it is possible to do ASP with it. A chapter deals with this approach, chapter well written but it needs to follow the associated example in your favorite IDE if you want to follow what's happening. Web means also web services and databases, handled in one chapter. The basis of SQL tools addressed, as well as basic webservces (mainly REST). I have to say that there are some mistakes there, as SOAP is not only used with POST HTTP requests but also with GET requests (it can be seen in the official w3c specification) and also with other transport protocols than HTTP. Perhaps these are .Net implementation's limitation, in which case it should have been mentioned. Finally Silverlight integration allows developping light clients that can interact with other langages as well as the web page.
Throughout the book, complete interaction with other .Net languages was not addressed. It is the goal of the last part to show how assemblies can be used in IronPython and how IronPython scripts can be used from .Net static languages. As I've said, the interaction does not go completely smoothly, there are several solutions to accomplish it. At least, the book does not only speak about the upcoming .Net 4.0 that will help this interaction.
As a conclusion, those who need a dynamic language (to script an application) can go for IronPython, th first dynamic language for the .Net framework, compatible with the langage Python 2.5, and in that case, go for this book that will help you for anything. ... Read more

Not what I expected
I purchased this book to learn SolidWorks. I'm 55 years old and was downsized nine months ago as a Mechanical Engineer. I have 30+ years of experience in technical documentation and manufacturing. There are a lot of books on the market; and the title and price (cheapest) caught my eye. I'm very disappointed with this book. Amazon states, "The only continuous, step-by-step tutorial for SolidWorks". There are tutorials in the book; but they are few and short and far from being step by step. Skipping five to six steps in a tutorial is not step by step and sometimes more. I'm learning more from the SolidWorks help files and tutorials than from this text.

The dimensioning and 2D drawing section is appalling for anyone who wants to learn SolidWorks and apply the ASME Y14 standard. The author presents dimensioning incorrectly, improper usage of leader line gaps, incorrect hole dimensioning schemes, incorrect arrow placement, and it goes on and on. I'm also surprise that the text did not include any models for the new use. This would have been very helpful. Then I realized that the book is written by a blogger. One star is all it gets.

No Experience IS required (for new users)
In the normal course of writing about SolidWorks topics, I was provided a copy of this book to review. This short version of my review is being added to Amazon.com to provide a bit of balance to the rating for this book.This book takes a detailed approach to teaching SolidWorks to new users.Though the book is structured as a tutorial, it is also a reliable reference guide to fundamental aspects of SolidWorks.

For experienced 3D CAD users, much of SolidWorks user interface and functionality is intuitive, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be covered in a book designed for new users.This book takes a detailed approach to learning SolidWorks.It is so detailed that even some experienced users may learn something by browsing its pages.In doing so, this book gives the reader context for each topic.For example, the FeatureManager (one of the primary user interface areas) is frequently discussed in the context of its use within each particular area.This helps the reader gain real understanding of its value as they perform certain tasks.

As book addresses each topic, it thoroughly covers every detail of the choices presented to the reader.This gives the reader a clear understanding as to why they choose one option over the other within the tutorial tasks.This adds significant value to this book as an actual reference guide.The reader learns more than just how to go through a simple step-by-step process for one exercise.They learn how to use SolidWorks for any design project.

However, sometimes the detail may be too much in the context of a tutorial.For example, chapter 1 teaches the reader about the SolidWorks user interface, but it also provides information on how to customize that interface.Perhaps a chapter on editing the user interface might be better at some later point in the book (or even in another book)?

Even still, this book is a great source to learn SolidWorks for new users.Academia might find this book very useful in their 3D CAD courses.It certainly wouldn't hurt to have this book available in any company that often hires people that may not be completely familiar with SolidWorks.

This book is NOT for advanced or expert SolidWorks users.CAD managers should not buy this book thinking they will learn something new.It is an education tool for new users, and a reference guide for others.

A very weak book in general.
I've been using SolidWorks since 2005, but my company has not kept up on subscription and I'm new to the 2010 version. First; SolidWorks 2010 is a major improvement over the older version. Huge improvements across the board in the user interface, toolbars, drawings, manufacturing capabilities, assemblies, features, material library, help and it just goes on.

I was looking for a SolidWorks 2010 book and saw this one written by Gabi Jack - blogger who I respect very much. I obtained a lot of tips from her blog on Solid modeling over the years. The book starts off very slowly; and frankly never really gets there. As an example:
On page 89 - you create your first sketch.
On page 146 - you finally finish your first simple part (base for the lamp).

In 500 pages of text - you create a single lamp assembly; which looks very similar to the one that SolidWorks Corporation used in their older tutorials.

The book does not provide a CD/DVD of examples, templates or before-and-after files of the models in the book. This would be helpful to any user.

To obtain access to needed and additional files or models, you need to download them - which can be an issue if your company has internet download blocks. Example:
On page 151 -download the install FDC Size B drawing template. This is not good!

The book is way too slow for the beginner; and is fairly useless to a present SolidWorks user - especially if you visit Gabi's blog along with others and attend any local SolidWorks user group meeting. A very weak book in general.

PS - Per the 3 posted comments to my review which occurred within 10 minutes of each other - Gabi you rock, but this is the way I feel about the book. Too slow is just too slow for anyone. For the general public, which is not part of the blogging community, what does this say about comments in general?

Easy to Understand
This book is definitely easy to follow and understand. Doesn't confuse you with coding and a lot of unecessary info. Great for beginners.

Confused
This would have been more helpful if it had presented the steps to creating a web site a little more linear. Too much detail about advanced topics thrown out too soon. Leave's a lot to be desired
I am a graphic design student. This book is a nice start but the problem is that the tutorials are already started. They do not address the step-by-step building of the projects. There is nothing on bones and how to really make them work and control them and bones are really cool and REALLY finicky!
This book is no good as a reference book. You can't open it up and figure out how to make a banner from scratch. It is fine if you want to learn a few things but flash is pretty intricate and this book did not help me very much.

Adobe Flash CS4 Digital Classroom Book Review
I would say that this is a good book for learning how to use the Adobe Flash CS4 Professional software. The tutorials are well-written and they also have video tutorials and lessons on the CD that comes with the book. However, not all of the video tutorials reflect the lesson plans for each chapter, it may show only a segment of a chapter's lesson. Other than that, I would still say that it is a good book to quickly learn how to use this software.

Flash Pro
I started the book recently, have not finished yet. I knew how to use CS3 version of flash and wanted to learn the improvements. This book is fantastic for learning the upgrades and I think you could learn flash without knowing anything about it from this book. Well written.

Pretty good, but a little too short on ActionScript
To begin with, teaching web programming or web design through books is a monumental task. Programming comes easily to some, but is much more difficult for others. Certain publishers and authors work well for some, and not for others. For instance, I have yet to meet a Visual Quickstart Guide that I could follow, whether it be Photoshop, Dreamweaver or Illustrator, but I know plenty of people who swear by them. Conversely, this book worked well for me, but might not for someone else. Tech books are very tied to learning styles and you might have to try a few different publishers before you find what works for you.

In general, this is a pretty good book for learning the basics of Flash animation, provided you are not interested in learning a lot of ActionScript. The chapters on ActionScript are pretty slim, and unless you are already familiar with ECMA Scrip syntax, ActionScript can be somewhat difficult to grasp. For instance, I still don't why I have to type :void; after certain ActionScript functions. Doesn't 'void' mean 'void?' Well, in ActionScript, not exactly. But since ActionScript can be such a powerful tool, especially for enhancing interactivity, I wish more space in the book had been devoted to it.The videos on the DVD are helpful - but they only cover one small aspect of each chapter, which is unfortunately, usually that of easiest task to master. It would have been better to include videos of the more difficult tasks.

The book is very easy to read and equally easy to follow. The lesson files are helpful, although some of them have too much already included from the start, so that you are jumping in in the middle rather than starting from the ground up. For some chapters, that worked just fine; but for others, I felt that I would have learned more if I had had to create more of the project from scratch.

Good for it's time, but Flash is Dead
I enjoyed the book, it does get you started off on Flash pretty well. Not much on action script. (This is my review)

But who really cares, Flash is dead anyway,being replaced by HTML5. Okay, so it's not completely dead, Flash will still be used for games and simple applications. After all, Flash does not agree with SEO and Mobile devices. (This is my opinion for the future of buying this book if you plan on making websites in flash) ... Read more

Read the other reviews carefully about Drupal 7
This book describes the version of Drupal (7) that is currently alpha code. This did not jump out at me when I read about the book! In the book there is little mention of what is different about Drupal 6 and the first "Hello World" example will cause you much confusion. I would expect that when Drupal 7 finally does get released, it will differ from the current alpha version, so in a way this book will never be accurate.

Excellent beginner's resource!
My favorite part of my career is training people how to use Drupal. I've been recommending this book since the day it came out and I got my 1st copy.
I really love how this book starts at the beginning. If you're more advanced you can skim the beginning BUT many people will read and reread the beginning. I'm so glad that it's there.
This book assumes nothing. It lets you know what you need to know. It walks you through the important concepts you need to understand THEN walks you through the steps by step instructions to accomplish the tasks you need to perform as a Drupal site builder and administrator.
The fact that the book is good for Druapl6 and Drupal7 audiences is a pure bonus!
I love Drupal because its awesome. It is certainly comforting to know that this is another awesome book about Drupal!

Not For Drupal 6 Users
From the Introduction to Beginning Drupal: "This book focuses on Drupal 7, but the changes since Drupal 6 are highlighted where appropriate." Well I'm deep in Chapter 4 and can only remember one "highlighted change".

I started the book with a working version 6 of Drupal, but soon got completely lost as it's really a version 7 book. At this time Drupal 7 is only available in it's 4th Alpha version. Version 7 is a lot different.

I did install a local version of Drupal 7 Alpha 4 and now I'm following along fine with the book. Version 7 will be released sometime this year and it's worth learning and being ready in my opinion, but the author should have been way more clear in what this book is about. ... Read more
