2-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but promoting a bit too much on Vanguard products
This is a review for 2nd edition. It's an informative, but it's heavily promoting Vanguard products which aren't the best financial products on the market. I bought two Vanguard mutual funds after read this book in 1999. One broke even after 7 years, which means I loss money on it if you count the 7 years interests. I'm still holding on the other one. After 10 years, it's still 30% in red. Needless to say, my impression of Vanguard mutual funds and this book isn't the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars great overview
This was a great overview of mutual funds with specific recommendations for which funds to buy for what purposes and time frames. Definitely a good buy!

4-0 out of 5 stars A more than adequate review of how mutual funds work and why you should invest in them.Very little fund-picking advice.
This is a great resource for those wanting to know more ABOUT mutual funds, not for those wanting to know WHICH mutual funds to buy.Heavy on the explanations, definitions, and categorizations; light on the criticism and praise of individual funds. While you do get a bit of "how to pick the right funds", it is all fairly basic, with nothing very stunning or surprising that will make you a better mutual fund-picker.

For what it is, this is a great book.Clearly written, with only the right amount of detail and very little repetitive content. At times it can be a bit wordy, making this book a bit longer than it really needs to be, but overall it is an easy read with an index and table of contents that will help you find pertinent information quickly.

So, if you want to learn more about mutual funds, how they work, ect., this book is for you.If you already feel like you have a good understanding of what they are and how they work, there isn't probably too much you'll learn from reading this fairly long book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making WISE Mutual Fund Investments
We all know every Mutual Fund associate thinks THEIR fund is the best on the market, hence the NEED for a non-partisan book that helps you understand WHAT to look for in a GOOD Mutual Fund. If that sounds like you, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is TRULY what it says it is...you may be a beginning investor when you begin the book, but you'll feel confident enough to make thorough investigations into prospective funds by the time you finish it! It is an 'easy read' book with easily understandable text.

5-0 out of 5 stars financial planning
Eric does a good job of a broad view of the particular subject matter at hand. My only issue is that the books are highly overlapping. A structure with the original book on personal finance with additional chapters on subtopics would likely have avoided all the duplication. ... Read more

Product Description
The growth of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) in recent years alongside an unprecedented access to investment resources by any individual with a computer has led to a major boost in the market for many of these funds. According to recently released numbers for the 2007 fiscal year, as reported in the Chicago Tribune, there are currently more than $608 billion in assets within ETFs, with almost $400 billion of that in domestically traded assets an increase of almost 40 percent in one year. This book will provide for you a complete guide to both understanding how to invest in Exchange Traded Funds and to earn the highest possible rates of return without risking your financial future. You will learn why the ETF has become the next major addition to essentially every casual trader s portfolio, offering a viable alternative to high-fee mutual funds and Wall Street infused stock trading. You will discover the multiple ways in which you can build the stock equity side of your portfolio, through large and small growth, sector investing, international investing, and with specialized stock ETFs. In addition to standard forms of ETFs, you will learn the various forms of Bond ETFs, Real Estate Investment Trading ETFs, and Commodity ETFs for gold, silver, and other precious metals. Also, you will discover why you should include a mixture of non-ETF investments in your portfolio to remain diversified at all times. A special section detailing a sample ETF portfolio and how yours should be organized will help you understand the format and building structure for ETF investments. The keys to buying and holding successfully, a stark change from normal investment strategies, will help you learn what ETFs do differently, while the listing of rule exceptions make it easy to recognize when you will have even more options than you originally expected. Through countless hours of interviews with financial professionals and newly independent traders like yourself, you will learn exactly how ETFs are being used today to revolutionize the world of personal finance, including retirement funding, education savings, and portfolio diversification. A list of commonly asked questions will ensure that every possible question you currently have is taken care of and the top ten mistakes that every new investor makes when starting with ETFs will help keep you from increasing your risk. You will be shown the entire corral of trading options at your disposal, both online and offline, and how Internet trading can help to increase your returns even further. The vital task of risk management is touched on repeatedly within each chapter, while trading profiles help you understand which investments have been most successful in recent years. For anyone getting ready to start trading in the highly lucrative ETF market, this book is a must have tool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Guide to Investing in Exchange Traded Funds
Exchange Traded Funds or ETFs can be an extremely complicated subject to just dive into. Similar to splashing within an unmarked pool, you never know when you'll hit the bottom. The Complete Guide to Investing in Exchange Traded Funds will act as your water wings until you're ready to become that Olympic diver, remember this is the same pool that Donald Trump swims in(ugh).

Your ultimate goal within the stock market is to invest the lowest while getting this highest return, but with the unpredictability and diversity of the global market, this is becoming increasingly harder. There are literally thousands of guides in this universe that are geared towards this enormous branch that hangs off the tree of investment, but I find this particular guide to be the most efficient. 338 pages of pure information in its most complete form that covers everything from how managing ETFs to the creation of ETFs. Martha Maeda is a well spoken economist that can be your ticket to a wealthier you. 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your First Resource in Understanding ETFs
Exchange traded funds ("ETFs") now enjoy increasing popularity in investment circles. If you are not a sophisticated investor, however, you may be intimidated by the notion of investing in an ETF.If so, Martha Maeda's "The Complete Guide to Investing in Exchange Traded Funds: How to Enjoy High Rates of Return - Safely" is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to fully understand how and why ETFs should fit into a personal investment strategy.

"Investing in Exchange Traded Funds" considers the history of ETFs, from their origin in Amsterdam in the late 18th century to the present, and offers a comprehensive examination of the recent laws and events that have thrust ETFs into public consciousness in the past decade.Ms. Maeda does an excellent job of abstracting the very complex history of the ETF and the even more complex economic theories underlying ETFs to present a cohesive and relatively understandable guide for investors who want to pursue the security and growth that ETFs offer.

Although Ms. Maeda's book makes ETFs much more accessible to casual investors, "Investing in Exchange Traded Funds" is not ideal for novice market participants who do not have a basic understanding of fundamental investment concepts.Accordingly, Investors who are taking their first steps into the stock market should consider a more basic examination of investment markets, such as "The Complete Guide to Online Investing: Everything You Need to Know Explained Simply" by Michelle Hooper before they jump into "Investing Exchange Traded Funds."

Anyone who is dissatisfied with their investment portfolio, or who wants to experience better returns on their current investments, should be aware of ETFs and how they might contribute to the growth of their portfolio.Martha Maeda's "The Complete Guide to Investing in Exchange Traded Funds: How to Enjoy High Rates of Return - Safely" offers an excellent guide for those investors who are ready to consider ETFs.After reading Investing in Exchange Traded Funds, even investors who are new to the concept of ETFs will be well prepared to discuss ETFs with their investment advisors, and to make better informed decisions about their investments.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overcome Investment Anxiety
Have you ever wished you were brave enough to start investing your money in something that could earn you real returns? If you're looking for a safer alternative to playing risky stock market games with your life savings, pick up a copy of "The Complete Guide to Investing in Exchange Traded Funds." Exchange traded funds (ETFs) are investment vehicles that make it possible for one person to own a share of a range of stocks, instead of investing in just a few individual companies. Since these modifications of the mutual fund are cheap to buy and own, have instant liquidity, and delay taxes, ETFs can be good vehicles for investing for retirement, investing for education, fleshing out a portfolio, or tax loss harvesting. According to the author, ETFs have grown more than 20 percent per year for over 15 years.

In simple and easy-to-understand language, "The Complete Guide to Investing in Exchange Traded Funds" explains what you need to know to begin investing with confidence. Some of the historical analysis at the beginning is a bit dry, but the vast majority of the information in this book will be helpful for those who are new to the world of investing. Pay close attention in particular to Chapter 20, with its list of frequently asked questions, common beginner investment mistakes, and sample portfolios.

In case you're thinking the book this book is nothing but an advertisement for ETFs, the author does spend a fair amount of time describing situations in which this investment vehicle is not the best choice. And, while it includes a list of ETF providers, the book does not appear to endorse one particular fund over the other. So, while this shouldn't be your sole source of financial information, it appears to be a fairly objective analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of investing in ETFs.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to earn the highest rates without risking too much
Learn how to earn high rates of return safely in a fine guide to ETFs - Exchange Traded Funds. There are huge assets in these funds, offering an increase of nearly 40 percent in a year on investment. This book offers a basic understanding of these types of funds and how to earn the highest rates without risking too much. Any library strong in stock market investing will find this a fine niche acquisition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book
Maeda's guide to exchange traded funds presents a compelling argument for ETFs as an alternative to other corporate investment strategies like mutual funds. The work reads like a chapter to chapter reference manual detailing the history of ETFs, their advantages, composition, and how individual funds line up with the market indexes they track.Though the author is a strong proponent of exchange traded funds, she maintains a level of thoroughness and impartiality that makes her work a valuable resource for evaluating ETFs as an investment strategy.
The book contains a wealth of information relevant to investors already familiar with corporate investment strategies. The opening chapters detail exactly what an ETF is and how they can often provide a more attractive investment than mutual funds due to lower costs and less room for human error. In fact, much of the first few chapters is dedicated to how ETFs provide a a more satisfying investment because they follow market norms more accurately than other types of mutual funds.Maeda goes to great lengths to point out the major advantages that would attract the interest of seasoned investors, namely lower tax liabilities, lower costs for trading shares, and much higher transparency than more traditional mutual funds can offer. Her analysis is both thorough and compelling enough to assuage the reservations of many discerning readers who will likely find ETFs a beneficial addition to their portfolios.
With the level of detail provided by Maeda's work, it would be understandable to assume that it would be too inaccessible for beginning investors simply looking to explore their options.Thankfully, this is not the case. Each chapter is laid out simply and easily so that a reader can review what information is relevant to them and move on.The author also provides comprehensive charts of the most critical information for easy reference. In fact it was often these charts that helped solidify the more extensive explanations contained earlier in the chapters, and would likely provide an excellent quick reference for novices and advanced investors alike. These provisions make The Complete Guide to Exchange Traded Funds a wonderful book to pick up and grow with as your investment strategy becomes more complex. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on mutual funds
A classic. I kept a copy of the book until one of my junior Sailors asked me for help with some investing literature, my advise to him "this is the only book you need to read about investing." After reading several books on the subject, I can say that this is the best book on mutual funds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bogle's the Best
Great price $01. plus shipping! This is a timeless classic for all mutual fund investors.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding guide for investors
"There are intelligent ways to go about investing and less intelligent ways."So says John Bogle, one of the most influential money managers of the last 50 years.

Bogle was one of the leaders in making index mutual funds available to ordinary investors.Bogle's index funds, and others that followed his example, helped turn very, very ordinary investors into very, very rich investors. This book essentially explains why Bogle's investment philosophy succeeds so well.

The book concentrates on the three basic types of mutual funds:stock, bond, and money market funds; describes the three important characteristics that all investments have:risk, return, and cost; explains why different categories of assets -- stocks versus bonds, for example -- have different risk and return characteristics; and shows how to construct an intelligent, balanced portfolio that will help you meet your investment goals.

One of the keys to Bogle's strategy is the idea that, while investors don't have direct control over risk or return, they do have direct control over cost; and by choosing low-cost funds (index funds are very low cost!), investors can dramatically improve their results. One of the other keys to Bogle's strategy is the efficient market theory, which, among other things, supplies an important part of the theoretical justification for relying on passively managed index funds. Those aren't fun, sexy concepts, and Bogle's methodical discussions don't do much to make them more entertaining. On the other hand, they will help you make money if you understand and apply them, and making money through investing is both fun and sexy!

This book is over ten years old now, so it doesn't have much to say about exchange-traded funds, sector funds, or some other, recent developments in financial management, but the basic principles it describes can easily be applied to those new-fangled inventions too.

This is one of the best books I've ever read about investing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The single best book on investing!
If you're going to read one book on investing and one book only, this is the one!Really, you won't need any other - it's that complete and that good. Not everybody can invest in index funds, but you can and you very probably won't get a better result any other way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ecellent book about mutual fund
One of the best books about mutual funds in the market even though it is over a decade old. ... Read more

Armed with the quantitative data and qualitative research, they will gain the confidence to pick great funds for the long-term. This book will be accompanied by a web-based tool created by Morningstar, which will enable readers to evaluate their own funds using Kinnel's criteria.

Written in a fun and accessible manner, The Fund Spy offers Kinnel's unique insight as a 14-year Morningstar fund analyst. He speaks plainly about the conflicts that can go against investors' interests, explaining how to avoid traps and push out the slick sales pitches facing today's investors. He also offers several "10 lists," which provide quick answers to investors' most common questions (e.g., the Top 10 Funds to Recommend to Relatives, the 10 Best Contrarian Managers, the 10 Most Overrated Managers). ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Fund Spy
I decided to not buy this book because after reading excerpts from it on google I decided that Mr Kinnel's biased approach was more a sales pitch for mutual funds than it was an investment guide. For instance under his 10 reasons to buy a mutual fund He states that diversification is better in a Mutual Fund than an individual can get. I think a truer statement would be that the concept of mutual funds makes it possible to get more diversification than an investor might get on his/her own.Actual diversification would depend on the funds mandate as well as the managements ability to invest.
He then states that funds have greater tansparency than any other managed account.
This would seem to be an overstatement since I doubt that Mr.Kinnel has audited all managed accounts and he does not state what he bases his opinion on.I know of no study that would back up his statement.

I could go on about his overstatements and obvious misstatements such as, getting in and out of a fund every day at net asset vailue, until I had a book written, but that is not my intent.

I think his book is a thinly veiled sales pitch and is of little use as an investment guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, easy read for those not necessarily investment savvy
Easy read, breaks mutual funds down into easy to understand pieces and if you still don't get it, Kinnel gives you his top 20 favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars Morningstar is the best source of mutual fund information
Morningstar was founded in order to cover mutual funds. What better source to learn about mutual funds from if not the SOURCE? Mutual funds are like cars, where in order to find how they work, one has to look under the hood. This is exactly what this book is all about. Kinnel is the Director of Mutual Fund Research for Morningstar, Inc, and he teaches readers how to select the best mutual funds. Since these funds are all different, people will benefit from reading this book.

In selecting the right fund, investors should answer some questions such as:

* Is the fund manager invested in the fund with his or her personal funds?
* What is the expense ratio?
* What is the fund's strategy?

Chapter 10 includes funds that passed the author's screening criteria. They include American Funds Fundamental Investors, Fidelity Spartan Total Market Index, and Vanguard Primecap Core.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, well written, just a bit dated in some details
This is a good book that is well written and in essence quite simple compared to other timing systems. A lot of the criticisms in these prior reviews are wrong-headed. For example, several complain about the 39-week average system he outlines. Well, if you checked you'd find this was created before 200-day moving averages were available on the web. Dick himself changed over to using 200-day averages on his web site when that became available. He also used regular indexes like S&P 500 and Nasdaq later on for simplicity, instead of averaging mutual funds which is hard. So it really becomes a simple system with these changes, and even more so using the ETFs which are now available (mutual funds complain about you shifting in and out of them). You can even check averages daily if you want, but the problem there is you may get too many buy/sell signals. However, if you wait until all three indexes cross over (DOW, S&P, and NASDAQ) you'll probably be OK.

Others say it won't get you out of bear markets, but that's not true. The only big problem occurs in sideways markets, where the indexes keeps bumping over and under the 200-day trend lines. Beyond this there are only 3 other caveats:
1. Buying in when the index is over the trend line but the trend line is still down, as it was recently. You need to be extra-vigilant in that situation, since you are essentially making money on the trend line, not on the daily fluctuations of the index.
2. Making sure you are using index trends that are equivalent to your investments. If you're investing in China you better be watching the Shanghai index and not the DOW (same applies to investing in oil, gold, etc).
3. If you're using ETFs, make sure they have high volume and narrow trading spreads. Otherwise, the moment you want to buy and sell will correspond to high spreads which will always be against you, since you are going with the trend, and these will eat up your profits. Go with big boring ETF index funds.

The basic idea here is that usually bear markets just grind away, dropping lower and lower to an unknown point, maybe several lower and lower points. This system keeps you out of that. It won't get you in right at the bottom either, but only when some confidence is restored. So they're not a lot of bragging points generated here, just a great overall risk-to-return ratio. It is this ratio that counts--not beating buy-and-hold during any period, which is higher risk.

4-0 out of 5 stars good system for its time, but didn't work from 1980 throuth 1999
This system worked well during secular bear markets to keep you safe from big losses, but has not done as well as Buy and Hold, by my statistics from 1980 through 1999.......however, again it has worked from 2000 through 2008, better than buy and hold.....
Other momentum systems, using Bollinger bands with confirming puncture through various moving averages, and crossing moving averages as 40/20, 60/30, etc......are worth a look also..in a given market......however, all of the momentum systems have their specific problems

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will change your life.
I bought this book on a whim a number of years ago. I had read several other general investment stategy books, but they never made an impact on me. This book completely changed my perception of the market and my retirement planning. I have now read it many, many times. I follow Mr. Fabian's wealth building plan to the letter. I calculate my own 39WAR of the Dow Composite and S&P500 with a simple spreadsheet macro. While in the market, I have easily made over 20% per year, and all of my friends are left scratching their heads. One of the best things about this book, is that Mr. Fabian is not trying to sell you anything, but he is truely revealing his lifelong work in wealth building to the reader (and his grandkids).

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best investment books written
This is quite simply one of the best investment books I have ever read. The concept behind the investment system is logical and the track record goes back decades. You are either invested in mutual funds or you are out of equities in a safe haven and this mechanical system tells you when to make the switch. This system would have kept you out of the stock market in most of the past bear markets. The only real question is whether to invest in an index fund, such as an S&P 500 fund, or in an ETF.The 39 day moving average calculation is fairly simple, even if you use the alternate data method found on page 123, and it takes no more than five minutes per week to calculate. This is not a get rich quick scheme, but a sound method for long-term investing.Although this book was published a while ago (2000) the content is just as relevant today as it was then. This is a highly recommended book for anyone interested in investing and you can now buy this book used for a fraction of what it cost new.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great writer, good plan, somewhat outdated.
Dick Fabian really cared about teaching people what he had learned from investing. Sadly, his son is money hungry and didn't keep up the free info that is referenced in the book on the website. I learned a lot about investing and some basic strategies to avoid major losses in the stock market. His theory isn't going to make you rich overnight, but hopefully it will raise your rate of return a couple of points over your lifetime, which could mean big bucks for some people. If you look closely, he says shoot for 20%, but he even points out that his picks over time only got him 14%. I will say one thing, if you would have used his plan, you would have been out of the market during the whole stock market crash in 2000-2002 and back in the thing in 2003. That alone makes this worth a read. ... Read more
