The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan represent two of the most interesting and potentially troubling events of recent decades. These two wars-so similar in their beginnings-generated different responses from various publics and the mass media; they have had profound effects on the members of the armed services, on their families and relatives, and on the people of Iraq and Afghanistan.

A great, fun overview of the region from 3500 BC to 650 AD
Norman Bancroft Hunt's book "Historical Atlas of Ancient Mesopotamia" was a fun, photograph- and illustration-packed overview of all the civilizations in the area from the ancient Sumerian city-states of 3500 BC to the Sassanians who lasted till 650 AD.

The 190 page book has large glossy pages and is broken into 11 chapters, and each chapter is broken into many 4 to 6 subchapters, each one allowing 2 pages on a subject and loaded with great illustrations and well-written text.

Topics focus a little more on the interesting Sumerian city-states and civilizations that came afterward, but also highlight the Assyrians and Persians.

Great Historical Atlas!
The large format and full-color maps are spectacular, and the focus on archaeology and material culture is great.Covers a very large time period, making it a great companion for survey courses.

I have a number of historical atlases.
I prefer larger books and this is a large sized book.

The book tries to cover a lot of time.From -6000 BC to 700 AD.
At present I am only half way through (around 700 BC).

The first part of the book covers the first settlements and the first cities well.You have a layout for each pre-eminent city of a particular time.So we see the first city layouts (from ruins) like Uruk and Lagash.Then later Babylon and Ashur.

We also see the 'big' picture of the way the cities are scattered about inthe area.One thing that could be better is the paths of the rivers - Tigris and Euphrates - at the different times.Unfortunately they do not know enough of where the rivers were at each period so most maps show the current paths.They do show the ancient coastline of the gulf.

They also cover the related nations to Mesopotamia.The Hittites in modern Turkey and the Egyptians are shown in the strategic maps.What they do not show is the movements of peoples.Like where the Hittites came from?they suggest a possible origin but they do not even have an arrow on the map to show these possibilities.

There are many photographs of artwork, sculpture, mosaics, some jewelry and many ruins of buildings and ziggurats.

I recently bought four other maps (Penguin): Ancient Rome, Ancient History , Medieval History and Ancient Civilizations.All of these were good but they were only 9" x 13".

This book is (guess) 14" x 20".I like bigger books.The type is larger too which means there is not a whole lot more information but will be easier to read for older people and those with glasses.

I really like this book. Compared with my other 18 or so historical atlases this is one of the top four in colour, size, and content.

I also think this information is more up-to-date than other atlases I have.Ex: Here the Hurrians and Mitanni shown to be the same people.

A Man, A Plan, Iraq
I dislike reading current books containing political predictions and advice - they tend to be mired in the popular ideas of the day. Instead I prefer to wait a few years and then validate the authors points of view against the unfolding of actual events.I find this a better learning experience. I picked up Joseph Braude's book from the remainder bin and after scanning a few pages.I was not disappointed.

Braude is a 1st generation American of deep Jewish-Iraqi descent.He speaks fluent Arabic, Farsi and Hebrew.He paints a grim picture of pre-invasion Iraq as a repressive totalitarian State replete with a Saddam centered "dear leader" cult of personality, omnipresent informers, secret police, death squads and prisons.However one feels about the conduct 2003 US-Iraqi war (I was opposed) there is no doubt IMM as to the inherent imorality of the regime and that the people of Iraq deserved the opportunity to be free of their president for life's arbitrary and tyrannous rule.

Aside from the various insights into the longhistory of Iraq which was (as Babylon) one of the cradles of civilization, Braude also does an good job of describing a reasonable model modern Iraqi society.He does give an all too brief summary of theposition of Iraqi Jews, both around the year 1000 under Islam (the Caliphs of the time generally supported learning and scholarship - Aladdin's Lamp: How Greek Science Came to Europe Through the Islamic World gives a closer examination of that period) and during the earlier part of the 20th century where they made up a significant portion (40%) of Baghdad's population and were quite prominent in Iraqi businesses and the arts. (see: Locked Doors: The Seizure of Jewish Property in Arab Countries for an fuller account of the expulsion and dispossession of Iraq's Jews.)

The highlite of the book lies in Braude's recommendations for reconstituting Iraq's polity.IMV had the U.S. followed Braude's advice earlier on the resulting interregnum would have been shorter, far less costly and less damaging to America's reputation. In spite of the interweavingof Saddam's security structure in the army and the police the U.S. should of worked with the existing infrastructure, eschewing the Baathist oligarchy but strategically cultivating the existing elites including imans (he mentions Yasir al Kubaisi - a popular cleric who's followers were cool to the ideology of the Muslim brotherhood) and Ali al Sistani, who did become the religious leader of Iraq's Shia community.as well as business and opposition figures both within and outside the country(see: The Mess They Made (Revised Edition): The Middle East After Iraq for a similar insight). I think Petraeus "got it", albeit 4 years later.

I did follow uponthe author's conviction for smuggling 3 stele (small stone cylindrical seals) out of IraqBraude testified that he had bought the artifacts on the street and suspected that the seals were stolen and said he planned to turn them over to U.S. authorities. He eventually entered a guilty plea (even if his statement were true, technically he was guilty of a crime) and served six months of house arrest.Not a bad example of how poor choicesand being caught can cause severe damage to one's reputation, however I don't feel that these events detract from the insights of the book.

Why is it that nothing about the Arab world ever turns out as it is purported to be?This book reads like it was written by someone who had a great depth of knowledge about,spent a lot of time there and was a big time business consultant to government and buisinesses there.Actually ,he was in his 20's,spent very little time there ,and who knows what consulting he did,there's no indication of anything about it in the book.
Ever since 9/11, we have been bombarded with the stuff that fills this book.What great benefits to mankind that the religions and cultures of the Mid East have wrought.The war cry about it being the cradle of civilization is neither here nor there when one looks at what a mess the whole area is today and has been for many centuries.
Societies whose cultures are built on a foundation of Racism,Hatred,Bribery,Oppression,Rheotric and Falsehoods,Eliteism Falsehoods,Eliteism,Slaughter of the Defenseless by those in power,have no right to consider themselves as civilized.
There is nothing in this book ,nor much else one listens to that comes from this part of the world ,that the culture ever desires peace and prosperity for its peoples and neighbors.It seems that if there was nothing else to hate someone for,the side of the street or the village one comes from would do.
At least in the past, the the consequences of this hatred,was relatively confined,but now the money derived from oil ,is resulting in it spreading and threatning the world's peace.
The book shows that the culture of this area is to blame someone else for the problems of their own making.
It was disappointing that the author's actions wrecks his credibility.
There is always hope that one day something good,other than oil,will come out of Iraq;but first there will have to be major enlightenment.

Very Impressive Work, for an antiquities trafficker...
I thought this book provided some interesting analysis about the opportunities in Iraq.

Recent revelations that the author is a law-breaking opportunist himself, however, color my appreciation of his work.I no longer believe it to be sufficiently "disinterested" as a scholarly work.

There are reports that Mr. Braude pleaded guilty to looting the Iraqi artifacts. Amazon.com would better investigate this and stop distributing his volume.

timesdaily.com, 08/03/04: An expert on Iraq's postwar reconstruction has pleaded guilty to smuggling 4,000-year-old artifacts looted from the country's national museum after the U.S. invasion.

Joseph Braude, 29, pleaded guilty Tuesday, two days into his trial on charges of smuggling and making false statements to customs agents. He could be sentenced to up to 16 months in prison.

Braude studied Near Eastern languages at Yale University and Arabic and Islamic history at Princeton University before publishing "The New Iraq: Rebuilding the Country for Its People, the Middle East and the World" last year.

As a Western academic who has carried out extensive research in post-Saddam Iraq, I was looking forward to reading this book, especially with regards to human trafficking in new Iraq. I was disappointed and found this book to be a mere collection of anecdotes that did not bring anything new to the many burning issues in New Iraq. Trafficking of women and girls does indeed exist in post-Saddam Iraq, this under the nose of the very people who have a responsibility to protect the populations under their care: the US. Historical Geography of Mid East
The Lands of the Eastern Caliphate is a compendium of information contained in the medieval geographers' descriptions of what is now Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and some of the central Asian republics. It is very detailed including physical, social, and economic information. Clearly the author was familiar with these landscapes and this was at a time before the modern world's advent into most of these areas. The book was published in 1905.
