Product Description
Louisiana irises have been hybridized from five speciesof Iris found only in North America, most specifically inLouisiana. Their boggy native habitats have largely been destroyed, and horticulturists’ efforts have gone toward the creation of anincredible range of hybrids in a variety of colors, forms, andsizes. They have proved adaptable to a wide range of soils andclimates, needing only sun, ample water, and neutral soil to thrive;they can be grown in beds with annuals and other perennials, or inwater up to a foot deep. ... Product Description
Named for the Greek goddess of the rainbow, the iris has been called the "poor man's orchid" because it is exotic yet low maintenance, inexpensive and can be grown in the back garden. The seductive beauty of this flamboyant perennial has made the iris second in popularity in the US and Great Britain only to the rose. This illustrated guide tells beginning and experienced gardeners all they need to know to cultivate many different varieties - but focuses mainly on the myriad of bearded, beardless and bulbous irises (including rebloomers). ... Product Description
"This book is exhaustive, accurate . . . One of its outstanding features is the 47 F. H. Round watercolors. Truly a great book."—Tulsa Daily World. A legendary resource in the history of botanical literature, this volume comprises the life's work of the world's foremost authority on irises. Scholarly yet accessible, it converts the tangle of iris hybrids and varieties into clear, complete groupings and descriptions that form the modern classifications. Magnificent reproductions of 47 full-color paintings of irises by F. H. Round complement the text, along with 31 other illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genus Iris - a technical resource
The Genus Iris is an important resource for growers of irises, whether home garden or commercial.Dykes is recognized world wide as an authority for classification and naming purposes, even though there have been changes since this book was first published in 1913.Perhaps the most remarkable feature of this classic volume is that so little has changed since it was compiled (I. Kaempferi, the original Japanese Iris, has been reclassified as I. ensata, for example). The 48 outstanding watercolor plates cover a range of species available at that time. This of course cuts out modern developments such as Louisianas, Pacific Coast, etc. However, as a comprehensive record of the structure and distribution of wild and cultivated irises, including the scientific nomenclature used throughout the world, Dykes is outstanding. Although it is a scientific tome it is easily navigated, with clear and concise descriptions.A true classic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pictorial means picture book. This is definately a picture book for Iris Lovers!
This picture book has the most pictures in it.It was nice to put a face to the name of the irises in this book.I was glad to see that this book did not contain any of the 92 irises that I have in my garden, which has given me new irises to lust over.My only complaint is that that this book only has about 300 pictures in it, and I want to see all of the 6000+ named bearded irises that are registered with the American Iris Society.I will keep searching.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.
This book was bought for my friend in South Africa who couldn't obtain it there.I was happy to get it for her as she is an avid iris grower. That aside, I was surprised by the lack of text, explanation, and overall verbage pertaining to irises. The photos are beautiful for the most part though some seemed a little out of focus to me, and that was disappointing. It is NOT an encyclopedia.....it IS a pictorial as the title states. That considered, it is what it is.Don't expect to learn much other than viewing pictures of some of the most beautiful iris available.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worse Iris book I have ever seen!
While reading all these nice reviews about this book I am tempted to write my own opinion. So it is - this is the worse book about Irises I have ever seen. First, do not expect much information from this book. The book contains mostly pictures and pictures are the bad part of this book. Some of them are out of focus, some other have completely wrong light, many pictures are with gray, bad colors, etc. Finally, many pictures doesn't really show the structure of the flower, they show something that sometimes even doesn't look like a flower. In a few occasions I found also that text and the picture doesn't match (or the picture was so bad).

Any way, I am very disappointed. I lost some $$.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected
Only the first few pages contain information.First page covers types of irises, second page tells how to read the book, third page covers planting and growing tall bearded iris. All the other pages are just alphabetically listed iris photos with a caption below each one detailing: hybridizer, year, bloom season and height. This pictorial guide is simply like another iris catalog.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book!
This book has awesome photographs and is a wonderful reference book for anyone interested in growing tall bearded irises. I love it!! ... Read more

Product Description
Unquestionably one of the most influential landscape and garden designers of the 20th century, the Brazilian Roberto Burle Marx has inspired generations of gardeners around the world. His sweeping forms and painterly approach to planting were revolutionary when they first came to public attention in the 1930s, and even today many contemporary designs owe his vision a great debt. This book, written by one of his most passionate admirers, is the first in almost a decade. A three-part introduction by the author considers his life, ideas and work. The core of the book is 26 projects presented in plans, specially commissioned photographs, planting schemes and in some cases Burle Marx's own paintings. An extensive reference section includes an exhaustive chronology and bibliography. ... Read more

Product Description
One of the most influential landscape and garden designers of the twentieth century, Roberto Burle Marx (1909Ð1993) has inspired generations of gardens around the world. His sweeping forms and painterly approach to planting were revolutionary when they first came to public attention in the 1930s, and many contemporary designs today owe his vision a great debt.Born in SŒo Paulo, Brazil, the son of German emigrants, Burle Marx studied painting in Rio de Janeiro, an aspect of his work that persisted throughout his career. Drawing on his masterly knowledge of Brazil's rich tropical plants, his fine-art training, and his love of music and sculpture, he began with private landscape commissions before his work caught the eye of architects Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer. With them, Burle Marx created some of his most memorable works in Brasilia and elsewhere around Brazil. His later commissions included numerous parks, private institutions, and his own residence, the magical El Jardin de las Maravillas--The Garden of Wonders. Publications on Burle Marx have been few, despite his world renown. This book is the first major publication in a decade. Before his death, the author worked closely with Burle Marx during the writing of this book, and gained unique insight into the life, ideas, and work that are outlined in the introduction. The core of the book is twenty-six projects, presented through plans--some redrawn from Marx's now vanished or ruined originals--specially commissioned photographs, planting schemes, and some of Burle Marx's own paintings. An extensive reference section includes an exhaustive chronology and bibliography. At a time when landscape design is more lively and influential than ever, this tribute to an acknowledged master of modern design is destined to inspire gardens and landscape design for years to come. ...
