3-0 out of 5 stars Good Irish Food
Irish cooking has its own distinct style: basic ingredients put together with native touches. This book does a nice job of presenting traditional Irish recipes. It isn't a huge book with page after page of creative ways of presenting Irish food, but it does what it does well. For an in-depth study of Irish cooking you'll want to go elsewhere, but this is a nice place to start, with good, sound recipes that work well, given in an easy-to-understand way. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Satisfactory compendium of lore, but less than thorough
Brid Mahon, a folklorist who has also written a memoir of gathering tales "While Green Grass Grows," obviously is steeped in the lore and stories that attest to the varieties of food & drink in both ancient and more recent Irish times. She veers, however, from her focus: half of the book's a recounting of whenever eatables & drinkables pop up in mythological and historical records; half a miscellany of how such foods and drinks were gathered, kept, and consumed. I was expecting more depth about how, say, mead was invented, but in that account all Mahon really noted were occasions of its consumption. The book's rather scattershot, but nonetheless enjoyable. Each chapter contains literary and popular citations for food & drink and while brief, the book's sufficient to whet your mental and perhaps physical appetite for a story too often neglected: how the Irish kept themselves going for centuries by imaginatively (or perhaps not always!) surviving on the bounty from land and, less often than might be expected, the sea.

One example: I tried, as one suspicious of most vegetables (having grown up with typically boiled foodstuffs!), to convince my more food-loving wife that Mahon, by quoting "potato and other vegetable" meant at a meal potato therefore was a vegetable, but she did not fall for this--although I was raised to think that not only potatoes but corn counted for the veggie! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Oh please!
Firstly, the previous review should have been about the book not the authors personal lifestyle.Secondly, She lives at the Waldorf towers and does NOT live on the farm. She paid a manager to care for these animals and trusted him to do his job.Her neighbor vouches for her in the following excerpt taken from an August 26, 2005 article in the New York Post "Food Writer Starved Horses".

Larry Levin, a neighbor of Cole's farm who is also a horse owner and lawyer, believes that for some of Cole's stable, it's too late. (to prevent them from dying)
"Some have died and been removed," Levin told us. "Nobody knows the body count. Or how many were originally there. A caretaker could have sold some of them, and Roz [Cole] would never have even known. She virtually never comes here. Sometimes there wasn't even a caretaker on the property."

That aside: The BOOK is a wonderful little item that does showcase those places that perhaps only a local would otherwise now.Or perhaps a seasoned traveler who was LOOKING for the places the locals go.We all know that wherever you go you should follow the locals and not the recomendations manufactured for tourists...esp if you're looking for authenticity.

Product Description
Rationing was introduced in Britain in the early years of the Second World War and lasted for nearly a decade after it finished. During that extraordinary period, when the nation had to rely on its own resources to produce its food, recipes reflected the shortages and restrictions that were an inevitable result. This book reproduces some of the many ingenious recipes which were developed to provide nutritious and tasty meals with the foodstuffs available such as Lord Woolton Pie, Mock Marzipan (made with haricot beans!), Sardine Fritters, Poor Man's Goose and Passion Dock Pudding (a 'square meal' made with dock leaves!) As well as the recipes, the book describes the history behind rationing and reveals how Britain coped - and benefited - from it. Illustrated with colour and black & white photographs as well as many contemporary advertisements, this book provides a true taste of the time! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone's Irish Tonight
This book is an incredibly fun way to learn a little history and learn how to make some great drinks. This particular book may not be the most comprehensive tome, but it's got a little something for everyone, wether Irish or not.

4-0 out of 5 stars cute gag gift
Book arrived in plenty of time for Christmas. It's fairly small, but packs in alot of information. The first section features info on various liquors and beers - mostly whiskey and beer. Overall the information is condensed but interesting. Over a third of a the book is an alphabetical list of cocktails. We enjoyed the section on the Story of Irish coffee. There's a small section on Irish toasts - some were cute, others a little dull/dumb, but still interesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute Book
I agree with previous reviewer. Nice little book with plenty of drink recipes and Irish wisdom and heritage in it. Small in size, not a coffee table book by any means. Worth the $8-9 bucks you may pay for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recipes with toasts, wisdom sayings, and Irish drink history
There are numerous cocktail cookbooks on the market already, but several things differentiate the pocket-tote-sized THE BEST IRISH DRINKS from others. First, they come directly from Ireland and thus represent authentic flavors based on the use of Irish liquors and ingredients. Second, its focus on recipes over flash assures 300 are packed into here and not watered down by the usual color glitter of the cocktail glass. Third, it rounds out recipes with toasts, wisdom sayings, and Irish drink history. What more could you want?
