1-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book sold with pages missing & printed out of sequence
This book is one of the best books ever written on the subject. However -- I paid over $100 for this book from a well known academic publisher. When I got the book it was missing pages. In other parts of the book the pages were there but were out of sequence and placed elsewhere in the book. This is no doubt a mistake of the manufacturing process but it demonstrates the publisher's inability to check products before sale. I have a suspicion that this book represents discarded ones the publisher could not sell on its own web site because they represented faulty manufacturing or printing processes. The seller did not respond to my calls or emails regarding the problem. I literally had to cut the book apart and reassemble it to read it. ... Read more

Product Description
Nineteen papers examining varied responses to Romanization, and how this affects our view of the development of the Roman Empire.

The traditional view of the Romanization is as the triumph of a superior and more advanced culture over primitive communities that was brought about by military expansion and which resulted in the creation of a very uniform political and cultural entity. It is only in the last twenty years that the variety of responses that Romanization elicited among the various ethnic groups, social classes, genders, spheres and even within the same person in different conjunctures of his or her life have begun to be appreciated. This new perspective has deep implications for our perception of Roman imperialism. The aim of this collection of papers is to further understanding of Romanization at a formative stage; early Roman expansion in Italy. There is much evidence for bi-directional negotiation between Italian communities and Rome. Understanding the motivation of the Italian peoples to become part of a new political entity is crucial to knowing how Roman Italy was kept together for more than half a millennium. Seven papers also examine responses to Romanization in other areas of the empire. ... Read more

Product Description
A study of aspects of urban and rural Roman horticulture. Limited by the available evidence, most of the discussion relates to decorative gardens, making use of literary sources and depicions on wall paintings. It is a particularly refreshing subject as gardens are frequently overshadowed by archaeological emphasis on recovering architectural structures. Farrar looks at common types of plants, ornamentation, layout and the evolution of design. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful struggle
This is a very rich guide to the ruins of Pompeii. The author is, without doubt, a scholar of distinction. The reconstructive drawings are second to none. The layout of the book is beautiful. However, as an introduction to the subject, the book is a struggle. The writing is often turgid, burdened with unnecessary archaeological terminology: The hip bone is connected to the peristyle, the peristyle is connected to the pronaos, the pronaos is connected to the portico, the chalcidicum is connected to the knee bone.... The glossary at the end of the book is hopelessly inadequate - a mere afterthought. The publishers would do well to study the DK Pulishing model and invest the book with a few introductory pages explaining the vast terminology employed throughout the work with architectural diagrams and arrows. It might then be a masterpiece.

5-0 out of 5 stars good re-creations of the buildings
this is a nice little book with TONS of careful, detailed information. The pictures are a little small, but they are good quality.
What I liked best was the artist's re-creations of what the buildings and the streets would have looked like.Since we get so much of our information about Roman interiors in general from Pompeii, this is really helpful to anyone interested in ancient Rome, not just people touring Pompeii.
A very good value.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Guide to Pompeii
This is a fantastic guide to Pompeii that I took with me on the last visit I made to the city. The book provides an outstanding introduction to Pompeii examining topics such as the water supply, building techniques and city planning. Each page is filled with illustrations. The houses and public buildings are presented section by section - a small diagram of the area on the initial page followed by the buildings in the area. Each house has a diagram with letters identifying the rooms and is illustrated by several photographs of the house and artworks found within. Some of the houses and building, such as the theater, have reconstruction drawings to provide an indication as to how the building probably looked prior to the destruction of Pompeii. The Villa of Mysteries is particularly excellent with a diagram of the famous fresco with color photographs. There also is a helpful glossary in the back of the book.

The guide has a glossy paper cover and is able to withstand heavy use.I know because I dropped the book a couple of times while reading it on site. The guide is also very useful even if you are not contemplating a visit to Pompeii and are just interested in an excellent book about the city and its archaeological treasures.

Product Description
The archaeology of early Rome has progressed rapidly and dramatically over the last century; most recently with the discovery of the shrine of Aeneas at Lavinium and the reports of the walls of the Romulan city discovered on the city slopes of the Palatine Hill.

The Archaeology of Early Rome and Latium presents the most recent discoveries in Rome and its surroundings: princely tombs, inscriptions and patrician houses are included in a complete overview of the subject and the controversies surrounding it. This comprehensively illustrated study fills the need for an accessible English guide to these new discoveries, and in preparation, the author interviewed most of the leading figures in current research on the early periods of Rome. ...
