Product Description
Since 1994, Italian politics has been dominated by the larger-than-life figure of Silvio Berlusconi. Blending discussion of personalities, parties, and policies with detailed geographical analyses, this book provides innovative insight into Berlusconi's career. "Berlusconi's Italy" provides a fresh, thoroughly informed account of how Italy's richest man came to be its political leader. Without dismissing the importance of personalities and political parties, it emphasizes the significance of changes in voting behaviors that led to the rise - and eventual fall - of Silvio Berlusconi, the millionaire media baron who became prime minister.Armed with new data and new analytic tools, Michael Shin and John Agnew reveal that regional politics and shifting geographical voting patterns were far more important to Berlusconi's successes than the widely credited role of the mass media. Shin and Agnew reject the prevailing orthodoxy about how coalitions are organized and replaced in Italy. Instead, using recently developed methods of spatial analysis, they offer a compelling new argument about contextual re-creation and mutation. They conclude that Berlusconi's success (and later defeat) can be best understood in geographic terms, and they suggest that geographical analysis has a useful role to play in examining political behavior in Italy and beyond. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Why do so many Italians vote for Berlusconi, Not Why I Wouldn't Vote for Him!
This is a change from the usual blether about the media in politics any why Berlusconi's ownership explains all there is to know about why he has been electorally so successful. I suppose in the US the equivalent would be explaining why Dubya had so much support even in the face of utter incompetence without resorting to all the false consciousness of religious zealots stuff. The authors show how Berlusconi put together a nationwide coalition in Italy from disparate political elements with roots in different regions.Anyone who knows even a little about Italy will get it. Lots of maps to illustrate the text. But anyone who graduated from college should be able to follow the empirical evidence. There are also lots of anecdotes to relieve the heavy duty stuff. It's also short. Most of the journalism about Berlusconi is much more verbose.

2-0 out of 5 stars Much ado about nothing
This book has the potential to be an interesting and provacative analysis of Berlusconi and Italian politics with a geographic focus. However, written by academics apparently for academics, it is the usual blah blah blah without much clarity or focused points of interest for serious non-academic readers. ... Product Description

How do the places where people live help structure and restructure their sociopolitical identities and interests? In this book, renowned political geographer John A. Agnew presents a theoretical model that addresses the relation of place to politics and applies it to a series of historicogeographical case studies set in modern Italy.

For Agnew, place is not just a static backdrop against which events occur, but a dynamic component of social, economic, and political processes. He shows, for instance, how the lack of a common "landscape ideal" or physical image of Italy delayed the development of a sense of nationhood among Italians after unification. And Agnew uses the post-1992 victory of the Northern League over the Christian Democrats in many parts of northern Italy to explore how parties are replaced geographically during periods of intense political change.

Providing a fresh new approach to studying the role of space and place in social change, Place and Politics in Modern Italy will interest geographers, political scientists, and social theorists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Italy from bottom up
This book is the first comprehensive study of how Italian electoral politics works from the bootom up -- from the places in which people live their lives to the political choices they make. It is strongly geographical and sociological in orientation, so it will not be so pleasing to those who like scandalous or conspiratorial approaches to Italian politics. It is very enjoyable, particularly in the later chapters, for those who wish to understand how the old Italian political parties wore out their welcome in the early 1990s and were replaced by the present complex of right-wing movements and the lackluster center-left. Everyone looking for a well-written overview of contemporary Italian politics (through to 2001 at least) will find this book a treasure of information. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the richness of Italian history and culture
Governor of New York Mario M. Cuomo adds a personal message to C is for Ciao: An Italy Alphabet, an ABC picturebook designed to introduce young people to the wonders and great figures of Italy. Each entry features beautiful, full-color art, a brief stanza that younger readers can follow fairly easily, and a sidebar consisting of multiple paragraphs of extensive text concerning the topic of discussion, more suited for adults to read aloud to young children. For example, the Z stanza is "Z is for Zabaglione, / a delightful Italian treat. / Made with sugar and eggs, / cooked 'til it's ready to eat." Meanwhile, the descriptive paragraphs include the passage "Dessert is perhaps the least important part of an Italian meal. It is common practice in many restaurants to offer nothing fancier than a savory piece of locally made cheese and some fresh fruit at the end of a meal. Traditionally, sweet desserts are associated with special occasions such as holidays and family celebrations". The combined whole is an excellent introduction to the richness of Italian history and culture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a nicely condensed overview of Italy and its people that will encourage students to learn more about the country!
Italy is a country located on the "continent of Europe." It is a mountainous country surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea.On its northern border we can find the countries of Monaco, France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovinia. Two islands, Sardinia and Sicily, are also part of the country. One unusual fact about Italy is that there are two countries inside its borders. One is the Vatican City and the other is San Marino. You can take a peek at a map in this book to get an idea where all these places are located in relationship to one another in this boot-shaped country. You can see the Apennines mountains that run down through the center, the country's largest rivers, and a few important cities.

The northern part of the country is industrialized while the southern part is mostly farmland. Most of Italy's inhabitants live in numerous, large cities. In fact, "four out of five Italians live in a city."Children begin school when they are six-years-old and attend "school six days a week" and "they do lots of homework."In this book you will learn many different facts about Italy and its people. You will learn about the land (including volcanoes), the Roman Empire, their "important centers of business," how people joined together in the 1800s to create the country, their language, their lifestyles, you'll learn about some of their cities, transportation, their family life, their foods (pizza!), their religion, holidays, sports, famous Italians, and more. Why do some people claim they are Roman or Milanese instead of Italian? You'll just have to read the book to find out!

This is a nicely condensed overview of Italy and its people that will encourage students to learn more about the country. If you are looking for a picture perfect introduction to Italy, this is one book you may wish to take a look at.The text is surrounded by colorful photographs that capture the essence of what the country is all about.I enjoyed my armchair introduction to the country and was fascinated by photos like the one of Vernazza, a small town that "sits on a hill near the sea."There are numerous, informative sidebars that add some very interesting material. For example, in one we are able to learn about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79.In the back of the book is a section of "Fast Facts," an index, a glossary, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore. ...
