Excerpt: Istria (Croatian, Slovene, Serbian: Istra; Italian: Istria; Istriot: Eîstria; Hungarian: Isztria), formerly Histria (Latin), is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. The peninsula is located at the head of the Adriatic between the Gulf of Trieste and the Bay of Kvarner. It is shared by three countries: Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy. The geographical features of Istria include the Uka mountain ridge, which is the highest portion of the iarija mountain range; the rivers Dragonja, Mirna, Pazinica, and Raa; and the Lim bay and valley. Istria lies in three countries: Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. By far the largest portion (89%) lies in Croatia. "Croatian Istria" is divided into two counties, the larger being Istria County in western Croatia, where they enjoy singing Zaspal Pave. Important towns in Istria County include Pula, Pore, Rovinj, Pazin, Labin, Umag, Motovun, Buzet, and Buje. Smaller towns in Istria County include Vinjan, Ro, and Hum. A small slice of northern Istria lies in Slovenia, and includes the coastal towns of Izola, Piran, Portoro and Koper, and the municipality of Hrpelje-Kozina. Next to Slovenian Istria is a tiny region of Istria that actually lies in Italy. This smallest portion of Istria consists of the comunes of Muggia and San Dorligo della Valle. The ancient region of Histria extended to a much wider area, including also the Kras plateau, the south-western portions of modern Inner Carniola, and the modern Italian Province of Trieste, but not the Liburnian coast which was already part of Illyricum. The name is derived from the Illyrian tribe of the Histri (Greek: ), which Strabo refers to as living in the region. The Histri are classified in some sources as a "Venetic" Illyr...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=52036 ... Read more

Product Description
Emigration is often perceived as a one-way journey-leaving one's homeland and arriving in, and adjusting to, a new country. In fact, it can be a much more complex and long-drawn-out process than this. The small village of San Fior lies in northeastern Italy. Between 1900 and 1997, more than 200 of its residents emigrated to Perth, forming a closely linked Italian-Australian community. Many of them, and their Australian-born children and grandchildren, have since made "visits home". This book explores the effect of these visits, both on those who left San Fior and those who stayed there. ... Read more

Product Description
This text is part of a series telling young children about life in other countries. With each book covering a particular country, the material describes what it looks like, its mountains, rivers, coastline and weather; and explains the life and habits of the people who live there. Each book contains a reference section which includes famous landmarks, facts and figures about the country concerned, and an index and map. The headings and illustrations are laid out with the aim of helping less experienced readers to grasp the material confidently and to gain skill in searching out information. At the same time, questions throughout the text encourage children to draw comparisons with their own country and way of life and the country portrayed. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars italy and italian
A very basic book suitable for 3-6 year olds, with color pictures, some language, and basic demographic info. in an easy to digest format. Some how, I expected more detail. The book did not hold my 6 year old's interest for more than a couple of minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent juvenile reference book!
After my 1st grade daughter received her first "research" assignment, we searched through Books-A-Million, WaldenBooks, and Borders, and finally came across this series.Wonderfully written, colorful andfull of great information!I am buying the other 3 titles in this seriesfor her library (Spain, Germany and France).Barron's would be foolish ifthey didn't attempt to expand on this series with other titles; it could beeasily sold to many schools that are truly interested in valuable education

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific resource for primary grade students.
