Product Description
The question this thesis attempts to answer is summarized as follows: what accounts for the amazing stability of Italian transport policy in the face of European challenges, given the fact that - as most national and European policy-makers readily believe - it is not capable of addressing the problem of the sector? This study analyzes the transport policy in Italy from the 1990s into the 21st century. It looks at how the two sub-sectors of surface transport, road haulage and raliways, have been managed by the public and private actors involved. In both sectors the policy appears to have failed, either by not offering a remedy to problems or by aggravating them further. The author believes that studying transport policy in Italy will shed light on the wider question of how national policy-making patterns are influenced by developments in the international environment; in this case looking closely at the influence of the European Union. ... Product Description
The ruling class plays a major role in society. It makes possible what would otherwise be infeasible, by removing constraints that may stand in the way of long-term growth. Historically, economists devoted far less attention than sociologists to the study of ruling classes. Using the theoretical tools of economists, this volume provides an understanding of what drives the formation of a ruling class, and the relationship between politics and business firms. Focusing on Italy, it uses labour economics to analyse the selection of the ruling class, the labour market of politicians, the allocation of managers' time, and their incentives, remunerations, and career paths. It draws on contributions from two teams of leading scholars and on research undertaken by the Fondazione Rodolfo DeBenedetti.

Part I focuses on the labor market of politicians. It uses detailed information on personal characteristics, incomes, performance in office, and career paths (both before and after the Parliamentary mandate) of all the politicians elected to the Italian Lower Chamber (Camera) between 1948 and 2008. This is the first time that this information has been gathered and summarized in key indicators. Part II is devoted to the managerial class. It includes cross-country surveys of managers across a sample of European countries, surveys carried out in cooperation with the largest union of managers in the service sector, social security records, and, for the first time, surveys on the allocation of time for top executives. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
"Stereotypical representations of the Mezzogiorno are a persistent feature of Italian culture on all levels. In Darkest Italy, John Dickie analyzes these stereotypes in the post-Unification period, when the Mezzogiorno was widely seen as barbaric, violent, and irrational, an "Africa" on the European continent. At the same time, this is the moment when the Mezzogiorno became a metaphor for the state of the country as a whole, the index of Italy's modernity. Dickie argues that these stereotypes, rather than being a symptom of the failings of national identity in Italy, were actually integral to the way Italy's bourgeoisie imagined themselves as Italian. Drawing on recent theories of "Otherness" and national identity, Dickie brings a new light to a key and well-established facet of Italian history - the relationship between the South and the nation as a whole."--BOOK JACKET. ... Product Description

Many of Italy's current problems can be traced back to the years 1948-1958, one of the most interesting but least-studied periods of recent Italian history. This was a decade in which the main cultural and political parameters of contemporary Italy were laid down. It was a time of enormous intellectual and artistic vitality, and a period in which the tensions generated by the Cold War affected the country to a greater degree than in any other western nation.

This first general survey of the period provides an overview of the political and economic position of Italy during the Cold War as well as an assessment of the affect of the Cold War on intellectual, cultural and artistic life. Distinguished scholars from a range of disciplines present case-histories on subjects as diverse as:

- the state's attitude towards the evolution of the family;

- the American presence in the Italian economy; and

- the place of the Italian film in world cinema.

- Italy's attitude towards the EEC and its relationship with NATO

Students and specialists who wish to enhance their understanding of Italian current affairs will find this interdisciplinary approach to the period invaluable.

"an important addition to scholarship on Italian history, politics and social anthropology, as well as a contribution to our understanding of the Italian concept of regionalism from different perspectives. [...] From an anthropological point of view, this reader may represent a landmark for future case studies on the ways in which the ideologies of the autonomist movements are received and interpreted by the people involved." --Journal of Cambridge Anthropology

"an interesting book which will be appreciated by political scientists and political sociologists in search of longitudinal perspectives, and by all readers who believe in interdisciplinary work." --South European Society and Politics

This second edition of a major text has been updated to take account of events in Europe since 1990.It is unique in offering an analysis of four major European democratic systems--those of the UK, France, Italy, and Germany--that combines theoretical approaches with empirical material.Organized around themes rather than countries, the book includes chapters on political cleavages, political parties and pressure groups, governmental institutions, and constitutional courts, and has a wealth of examples throughout. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized, hard to follow
The book focuses on politics in Britain, France, Germany and Italy.Unfortunately, it turns what could be an interesting comparison into an exercise in boredom.Each section reads like an individual essay with the authors trying to prove some central thesis and thus fails to sufficiently explain the forces influencing politics in the countries of focus.It does not fully explain the basics of European politics and is not good as an introductory book on this subject.Unlike the reviews on the back of the book it is neither "clear" nor "simple" (for each section there are no subheadings for each individual country the paragraphs simply jump to a random nation, the selection of which seems completely arbitrary)It is perhaps more suitable for those already familiar with European politics. ... Excerpt: The Italian Code of Criminal Procedure contains the rules governing criminal procedure in every court in Italy. The first and initial code in the Italian Republic was established by the Fascist Government in 1930 and was kept until 1988. This code adopted an inquisitorial system. In 1988, a new code was enacted that chose to abandon the inquisitorial system but not complete the transition to an adversarial system; the resulting system could be considered to be somewhere in between. The main parties to a criminal trial are the Judge, the defendant and the Pubblico Ministero (the prosecutor). There are other parties that are optional, and they are: the Polizia Giudiziaria (Judiciary Police, a branch of the Police whose duty is to help a prosecutor during his investigations), the parte lesa (the injured party), the responsabile civile (civilly liable, who ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=25386037 ...
