BACKGROUND INFORMATION The Collection began its development in 1966, together with the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures, and was first housed in the same building as the Department in Wynyard Street. A subject librarian was appointed to look after the Collection, and regular funding for the purchase of monographs and periodicals in the Japanese language began in 1968. By 1971 the collection had grown to about 7,200 volumes, and it was transferred to Level 3 of the General Library when the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures moved to a new location in 1972. In 1989, New Zealands first Korean studies course was introduced with the sponsorship of the Yongkang Foundation, and Korean language material was added to the Collection. 2.. DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION The core of the Collection is resources on the literature, history, language, philosophy and religions of China, Japan and Korea. This is supplemented by subject related indexes, reference works and bibliographic tools. It has a total of 60,000 volumes of monographs plus 5,500 bound volumes of serials and other material. Of these two-thirds are in Chinese, one-third in Japanese and about 5,000 volumes in Korean. The Collection also comprises Chinese, Japanese and Korean newspapers, audio-visual materials and online links via LEARN to virtual resources.
