Product Description

From the zoot suit and Black dandy through to Rastafarianism and beyond, Black style has had a profound influence on the history of dress in the twentieth century. Yet despite this high profile, the dress styles worn by men and women of the African diaspora have received scant attention, even though the culture itself has been widely documented from historical, sociological and political perspectives.

Focusing on counter- and sub-cultural contexts, this book investigates the role of dress in the creation and assertion of Black identity. From the home-dressmaking of Jamaican women, through to the Harlem Renaissance and contemporary streetstyles such as Hip Hop and Raggamuffin, Black Britons, African Americans and Jamaicans have been at the forefront of establishing a variety of Black identities. In their search for a self-image that expresses their diaspora experience, members of these groups have embraced the cultural shapers of modernity and postmodernity in their dress.

Drawing on materials from the United States, Britain and Jamaica, this book fills a gap in both the history of Black culture and the history of dress, which has until recently focused on high fashion in Europe. Because dress can both initiate and confirm change, it provides an especially useful tool for analyzing identity and resistance.

Editorial Review

Product Description

Newly available in paperback, this study explores the dynamics of race and masculinity to provide fresh historical insight into the First World War and its Imperial dimensions, examining the experiences of Jamaicans who served in British regiments.

Reluctance to accept West Indian volunteers was rooted in the belief that black men lacked the qualities necessary for modern warfare. This, combined with fears over white racial degeneration, resulted in the need to preserve established hierarchies, which was achieved through the exclusion of black soldiers from the front line and their confinement in labor battalions.

However, the author shows that despite this exclusion, the experience of war was invaluable in allowing veterans to appropriate codes of heroism, sacrifice and citizenship in order to wage their own battles for independence on their return home, culminating in the nationalist upsurge of the late 1930s.

This book offers a lively and accessible account that will prove invaluable to those studying the Imperial dimensions of the First World War, as well and those interested in the wider notions of race and masculinity in the British Empire.

Product Description
Sister Jamaica is about women factory workers, their households, jobs and lives in Kingston during the destabilization of the Michael Manley administration (1978-79). It shows how these working class women and their household members achieved access to scarce resources and survived a national political and economic crisis. The author argues that such achievements were the result of these women and their households exercising a variety of traditional and contemporary cultural, social and economic options. Bolles looks at the influences of race, class and gender, emphasizing women's roles in kinship, kindredship and domestic organization. Domestic chores, cash flows and networks of exchange are examined in order to illustrate which household member performed what kind of task and under what kind of circumstances. The division of labor among 127 households is examined. Finally, Bolles looks at the factories and female work forces against the background of international capitalism. This text will provide beneficial reading for introductory anthropology classes and courses in women's studies, Afro-American studies, and Caribbean and Latin American studies. ... Read more

Product Description
The first major account of the history of reggae, black music journalist Lloyd Bradley describes its origins and development in Jamaica, from ska to rock-steady to dub and then to reggae itself, a local music which conquered the world. There are many extraordinary stories about characters like Prince Buster, King Tubby and Bob Marley. But this is more than a book of music history: it relates the story of reggae to the whole history of Jamaica, from Colonial Island to troubled independence, and Jamaicans, from Kingston to London. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding
Very encouraging to see this subject treated so comprehensively.

History, social and political context, music and sound, atists ideas and influences, details of all the major players with the whos and whys -

If origins and growth of the Jamaican dancehall ska and reggae scene interest you this is your book - best to read with access to the original music - should come with a cd.Can be difficult to track down all the pieces but luckily it was done for me by a good friend.Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference source
Bass Culture
This is a great resource for any fan of reggae, or anyone interested in Jamaica's recent social/cultural history. Bradley's obviously spent a lot of time collecting and sifting through the history of the music, a seemingly impossible task when you consider the haphazard and apocryphal nature of it all, and presents the accumulated knowledge in a fair and balanced way. Doubtless, there's small inaccuracies here and there but this book is one of the most thorough I've read on the subject. I found this book to be a goldmine of information and it lead me to discover some wonderful music and musicians which may have otherwise passed me by.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive Roots Reggae Survey
At over 500 pages this thick little British import is an exhaustive survey of the Roots Rocker Era of reggae: '69 thru early 80's when dancehall took over.

The book begins with the birth of Jamaican music, and the rise of the sound systems. Ska, Rocksteady, then Roots Reggae are examined. Economics, and the rise of Rastafarism are woven throughout the story.

The various producers and their work are discussed, along with the importance of Britain as a sales base, and the emergence of Trojan.

Dub, DJ's, producers, singers, rhythm sections, etc are all discussed.

This very dense and packed with stories and information I cannot imagine anyone being disappionted as long as they realize this deals exclusively with the 70's roots era. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bestbook on Caribbean Pop Culture
I was drawn to this book firstly through its title.
Since many books on caribbean pop culture tend to be either too theory ridden or journalistic, I was impressed with this work's ability to ride in the liminal space between academia and the everyday, so to speak.

Here is an author who seems to really know the subject matter and whose approach reflects passion and even an anxiety to take Caribbean criticism to new levels. Although the book makes reference to other more established critical approaches to Caribbean pop critique, it doesn't fall into the trap of labouring over them, instead it demonstrates how far Caribbean culture has advanced and the distance that criticism must be prepared to go to catch up. Given the work done on Contemporary culture studies at University of the West Indies, this book marks a new trend in some respects, chief among which must be the attempt to unhinge cultural critique from the pole of overworked methods rooted in postcolonialism, gender, marxism etc.

Here is a work that is prepared to chart its own course, so to speak. Its discussion of leading-edge subjects such as AIDS, gospel, Internet, Technology etc makes this book easily the most creative and daring work so far on Caribbean culture in the 21st Century.

For me "Culture @ the Cutting Edge" helps to invigorate criticism about Caribbean society. In the future this text might very well be regarded as one of, if not the defining work that marks the active entry of the UWI School into the robust domain of first world cultural production.

Product Description
This study of Jamaican folk music illustrates the effects of acculturation. The majority of the 200 musical examples are Jamaican, with some British and West African music to help show comparative points made in the text. There is an appraisal of the many different races that make up the Jamaican population which account for the different categories of ethnic music in Jamaica. In addition to the ethnic analysis, this study also covers areas of play, work and religion. ... Read more
