4-0 out of 5 stars In Focus Jamaica: A Guide to the People, Policitics and Culture
Very good look at the history and overview of the makings of the most beautiful country we've ever seen. It really helps to understand the personalities and the heritage that brought them to the point they are at now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not your average travel book
I was looking for a book that would tell me more than the best beaches or resorts to visit. This book is much more in depth about the culture and people than most travel books. If you want to know about the real Jamaica and not just what you see at a resort or on a tour, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Travelers
The greatness of Mason's guidebook is that it gives history and politics as well as travel information.Mason provides a basis for understanding the place.Another great travel companion is "Jamaica Girl" by Jon Michael Miller.Miller's novel also shows you the real Jamaica, far behind the walls of the famous all-inclusive resorts. You will see the struggles and the joys of a wonderful people, as well as meet Rosalind Juliet Mitchell, a fabulously brave and resourceful protagonist, on her search for love and freedom. It is by far the best book about Jamaica I have ever read. A wonderful story, suspenseful, sexy, funny, disturbing, and quite moving. Wonderful characters. And a great message about the power of love to transform one's existence. A great read for a vacation, or, even, a vacation in itself. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
In this sequel to Kingston, Jamaica: Urban Development and Social Change, 1692 to 1962 (1975) Colin Clarke investigates the role of class, colour, race, and culture in the changing social stratification and spatial patterning of Kingston, Jamaica since independence in 1962.He also assesses the strains - created by the doubling of the population - on labour and housing markets, which are themselves important ingredients in urban social stratification.Special attention is also given to colour, class, and race segregation, to the formation of the Kingston ghetto, to the role of politics in the creation of zones of violence and drug trading in downtown Kingston, and to the contribution of the arts to the evolution of national culture.A special feature is the inclusion of multiple maps produced and compiled using GIS (geographical information systems). The book concludes with a comparison with the post-colonial urban problems of South Africa and Brazil, and an evalution of the de-colonization of Kingston. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
Greatly extending the long out-of-print first edition, this new volume features over 300 specially redrawn cave plans, colour plates illustrating the Jamaican underground scene and numerous extracts from previously unpublished expedition logs and anecdotal accounts of explorations. This second edition of Jamaica Underground provides the only single source of detailed information on the caves of Jamaica.

For each of the over 1,000 listed sites information is provided on the depth, length, altitude and characteristic features together with a guide to the equipment required for exploration. Jamaica Underground also includes a comprehensive annotated bibliography of over 500 entries. These range from scientific studies of speleogenesis, karst process, hydrology, biospeleology and palaeontology, to more general reading which will be of interest to visiting cavers and noncavers alike.

The only comprehensive volume on the caves of Jamaica, this book is a speleological treasure trove of information and makes a significant contribution to the speleology of tropical karst regions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on caving in Jamaica you'll ever find
A monument! For every caver just dreaming to go caving to Ja this is a must have. Tons and tons of information. Excellent work from Mr Fincham. This is a lives work. Only minor flaw: the many cavemaps have been redrawn to have a uniform style throughout the book resulting in a reduction of detail compared to the original map. But who cares ;) ... Read more
