Editorial Review

Book Description

The century-long process by which a distinct pattern of Japanese labor relations evolved is traced through the often turbulent interactions of workers, managers, and, at times, government bureaucrats and politicians. The author argues that, although by the 1920s labor relations had reached a stage that foreshadowed postwar development, it was not until the 1940s and 1950s that something closely akin to the contemporary pattern emerged.

The central theme is that the ideas and actions of the workers, whether unionized or not, played a vital role in the shaping of the system. This is the only study in the West that demonstrates how Japanese workers sought to change and to some extent succeeded in changing the structure of factory life. Managerial innovations and the efforts of state bureaucrats to control social change are also examined.

The book is based on extensive archival research and interviewing in Japan, including the use of numerous labor-union publications and the holdings of the prewar elite's principal organization for the study of social issues, the Kyochokai, both collections having only recently been catalogued and opened to scholars. This is an intensive look at past developments that underlie labor relations in today's Japanese industrial plants.

Editorial Review

Book Description
The direct provision of housing to employees is a neglected area of study both in conceptual literature on employment, the question of housing in geography studies, as well as economics and other disciplines, and more specifically in writings on contemporary Japan. This study explores aspects of the development of employer-provided housing in Japan in the context of the functions it performs and the problems it has been designed to address, and reflects on the broader theoretical and practical implications of Japan's unique experience with this particular housing form. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
This volume is handsome and visually appealing, but its contents are a disappointment. The appellation "atlas" is entirely inappropriate for a work that contains only a handful of maps scattered across hundreds of pages and pays almost zero attention to regional variations. The work also spoke little about "culture," choosing to zero in on specific historical anecdotes, generalizations about historic ties with China, and the most cursory information on the life of the modern Japanese. I was very, very disappointed. It's a nice book, but it's not at all what I expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photographs and detailed descriptions
I'm a Japanese and I had some troubles when I explain about Japanese things in English at my web. I got several dictionaries and encyclopedias on Japanese culture in English, but they won't do when I want to explain in depth.

This Cultural Atlas has detailed descriptions and full ofbeautiful photos and graphics. Interesting to read and joy to eyes.

Ifyou are interested in Japanese culture or history, this book will be a goodcompanion. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting intro to Japan
"Japan," by Tamara L. Britton, is a basic book about the nation of Japan. It is richly illustrated with many photographs (both color and black-and-white). It includes maps, an index, a glossary, and other supplements. There is a chart of "fast facts" (ex. population, highest elevation, mining products, etc.) and a historic timeline.

Topics covered include history, geography, plant and animal life, ethnic groups, the school system, government structure, theater traditions, and more. My only complaint is that the book should have included more on Japan's remarkable language and complex writing system. But that aside, it's a solid reference work. ... Read more
