5-0 out of 5 stars Vital information to make your search for a job successful.
The search for a job, especially in a struggling economy, can go on much longer than hoped for.Trina Selstad has written a book to provide the Christian with a tome of vital information to make your search for a job successful. You will either discover a clear, concise plan of attack for your job search, or be reminded of important steps you may have forgotten.

In addition to the essentials of resume and cover letter preparation, job interviewing, and follow up strategies, spiritual encouragement, and additional ideas for enhancing your job search are provided. You will learn clear-cut information on a broad spectrum of relevant information from the difference between gifts and skills to always looking up even when experiencing rejection.

I enjoyed how Trina, with more than a decade of experience in human resources, provided easy-to-follow nuggets on 14 different topics related to the job search process and intermingled scriptural principles into each area. The book is a refreshing approach to providing believers with real-world practical Christianity.

I further found the three appendices of value. The reader will benefit from online job-search resources, a job-search action plan, and organizational tools for managing the job-search process.I recommend the book to anyone in the job-search process. It will be especially enjoyed by the Bible believer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine pick for any Christian on a job hunt
Keeping the faith can be hard when rejection is everywhere you turn. "The Bible Believer's Job Search Handbook" is a guide to keeping the faith and using scripture to keep one motivated when on the job search. With advice on pursuing one's job that is good for anyone, "The Bible Believer's Job Search Handbook" is a fine pick for any Christian on a job hunt.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid job searching advice from a scriptural direction
I finished reading Trina Selstad's job search manual over the weekend, and I wanted to be the first to comment on it on Amazon.com. I found the job search advice Ms. Selstad delivers in her book to be quite good and relevant to our modern times. Her ethos as an HR professional for over a decade supports this strong advice. She includes appendices with links to different job boards and websites, and her book also contains several strong cover letter and thank you letter samples as well as many resume templates one can use to create his own winning resume.

My one area of criticism, however, is the lack of scripture in this book. I was truly hoping for a text that delved deeply into the Bible to pull out relevant job search advice and scriptural encouragement. Instead, Ms. Selstad used biblical quotations along with quotations from several commentators and missionaries to begin her chapters. While these epigraphs did help to set up, in my mind, the idea that this advice was coming from a biblical direction, I would have appreciated more direct biblical quotation and the scholarship connecting those insights to a job seeker's predicament.

All in all, I would say that The Bible Believers Job Search Handbook is a good starting point for the religious job seeker, and it makes a nice addition to a job seeker's library, but the author could have strengthened her Bible scholarship to deliver a truly unique work on the Bible and the Job Search. ... AN EXCEPTIONAL BOOK ON JOB-HUNTING, SELF-GROWTH & CAREER MANAGEMENT

During our entire life, we're engaged in one of two sorts of activities; either we're selling something or we're sleeping. The Selling in life starts with first 'cry for milk' of the baby and it continues till........

One of the most crucial but equally neglected areas of our life is realizing our innate talent and skills and passionately selling them in the marketplace at premium.

Sometimes, we fail to sell our most valuable product in the job market and sometimes we under-sell ourselves. Rare are the individuals who systematically plan to invent and package themselves to sell to the best and the highest bidder.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is More than a Guide for Selling -- It's a Guide to Life
The book offers a wealth of ideas on getting a job and building a business -- because, as we know, relationships are a key part of building a successful business -- and a major part of life. Mr. Chaudhry's examples are right on target and I'll keep referring to them to remind me of the importance and techniques of selling ones self to just about anyone. The book is ammunition to achieving goals.
Barry Feig, Author of "Hot Button Marketing"

5-0 out of 5 stars New Book Teaches Career Management for Job Seekers in Today's Economy
How should you present yourself in a job interview?Do you have a marketing strategy for finding the job you want? What makes you stand out from everyone else interviewing for the position? These are the just some of the important questions job seekers should be asking themselves. Many people approach job hunting without any clear objective other than finding a steady paycheck.Ashraf Chaudhry gets you thinking in a different direction in The Craft of Selling "YOURSELF".Chaudhry teaches you to think like a salesman positioning a service that the employer needs.
The Craft of Selling "YOURSELF" lays out the problem in the first two chapters.Chaudhry explains that we are always selling whether we want to or not.We start with our first cry for milk as a baby and it continues throughout our lives. The job seeker needs to treat themselves like an enterprise launching a product or service. You are now a sales manager managing yourself.
One of The Craft of Selling "YOURSELF"greatest strengths is laying out the solutions in clear detailed steps. How to brand yourself, how to dress, letter writing, writing your resume, networking, and interview management are all explained in the book in steps that anyone can follow. The reader can look at this book as their business plan for promoting and selling the Brand Called YOU.
Besides telling readers how to land a job, Chapter 11 helps you negotiate a salary. The 6 myths of salary negotiation is not only for the job seeker, but for the employee negotiating a raise during their annual review.
Ashraf Chaudhry has written a much-needed and well-organized book for those seeking new employment or changing careers. It will give readers much to think about and plan for, and which they will return to time and time again. This book is a must read for anyone in the job market today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realize the power in "YOURSELF"
My Initial impression was "Oh! just another motivational book", but after reading the book, based on a strong recommendation, I would term it the book that " really makes the difference". This is a true value addition that makes you as a job searcher different from the others. The most commendable feature is his ability to convey effective ideas in a simplistic method, that can easily be implemented.

Go ahead and invest in yourself...

5-0 out of 5 stars Ashraf Chaudhry hits the nail on the head.
Not only does he identify the main problem when looking for employment, his book provides the solutions.

When I taught business students at the universities and the discussion of finding employment after graduation came up, I would tell them this. You are not asking for a job - you are selling a service that your target employer needs. He or she is not doing you a favor by hiring you. You are doing them a favor by giving them the opportunity to bring on board a talented and unique individual.

"Unique" is the operative word. And Chaudhry takes it home in his book `The Craft of Selling Yourself'. I would tell my university students that everyone - EVERYONE - is selling something. And that includes YOU. You are a product to be marketed and a unique one as you. A unique brand. A Brand called YOU.

Chaudhry says this right up front in his Introduction. "During our entire life, we're engaged in one of two sorts of activities; either we're selling something or we're sleeping. The Selling in life starts with first `cry for milk' of the baby and it continues till........" And then you fill in the blanks.

This is why I like this book. It employs the right premise from the start. And that's why it's worth your money.

A good example is in the very first few chapters. In the one titled `You're the CEO of YOU, INC.', Chaudhry says, "Treat yourself like an enterprise. Your skills are your product and service. And you're CEO of You, Inc. CEO's job is to sell all the time. He has to sell change; he has to sell his ideas; he has to sell his vision and he has to sell his image. CEO is the Chief Selling Officer. Starting a job hunting process is similar to launching a product or service. The only difference is: here you're a product; you're a brand; you're a product manager; you're a brand manager; you're a sales manager."

He then goes on to say THE most important thing that one must have when selling ANY product or service. The USP. The Unique Selling Position. "You've to position yourself. You've to bring out your Unique Selling Propositions. You've to craft your own marketing strategy. You've to open your own channels of distribution to make yourself `on-the-shelf'.

In the remainder of the book, Chaudhry provided the strategies and tactics for promoting and selling the Brand Called YOU.

I highly recommend this book for those both seeking new employment and/or changing careers. Especially in these economic times.

4-0 out of 5 stars Particularly helpful guide for new social worker job seekers.
I wish this guide would have existed when I graduated from the University of Michigan with my Masters in Social Work (MSW) in 1979.It would have been particularly useful at that time. Now, with 30 years in the field the book, though helpful, leaves a little to be desired to those of us who have long been in the field.

The book's strengths lie in helping to develop confidence in social workers just entering the field after earning their graduate or bachelor degrees.Personally I would have liked to have had more information helping those who may have left the field for a short time perhaps to raise families, care for elderly parents or move with their servicemember husbands to new duty stations.

I actually bought the book at an annual NASW Florida Chapter conference for Chapter Five: Interviewing Effectively. I found that chapter to be lacking however. I would preferred if that chapter could have been expanded to be more like Matthew J. DeLuca's Best Answers to the 201 Most Frequently Asked Interview Questions or Ron Fry's 101 Great Answers to the Toughest Interview Questions [101 GRT ANSW TO THE TOUGHE].

It is difficult to prove but I believe that as a "veteran" social worker (over the age of 50) I may have experienced some age discrimination. Additionally if one has spent a good many years as a community organizer or policy planner/analyst it may be difficult to change fields say to direct service. The book may have mentioned this a couple times but did not expand on this subject extensively enough. I mean what happens if you walk into an interview and you are already being prejudged because you spent many years in a particular type of social work but now are trying to change into another field? It can be very challenging to convince someone even with the best of social work skills. I would like to see a sequel to this book more tailored to the older (more mature?) social worker.

Otherwise this is a GREAT book for the newly graduated MSW or BSW or those who been in the field for less than ten years. The main text of the book is concluded, for instance, with twelve (12) wonderful appendixes which contain, among other topics, sections on sample cover letters and correspondence, sample resumes, sample interview questions and sample skills by function. Overall, therefore, the book is a worthwhile read for both the novice and more experienced social worker job seeker alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product, excellent price, good condition
I purchased Social Work Career Development: A Handbook for Job Hunting and Career Planning. The product came in a timely manner, I was pleased with the price and the amount I Paid for it. I would purchase from this user again in the future.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
This book is amazing. It's such a great resource for social workers.Doelling tells you step.by.step about the interviewing and writing of the resume process.By breaking it down and giving a lot of resources, she makes it comprhendable and less intimidating. This book is good for social workers who work in a variety of capacities, not just direct service.I am a policy practitioner and this book has resources for me too!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for career exploration & job hunting
I read this book while exploring career opportunities in psychology and social work. This book has lots of useful information about different jobs, the education required, salaries, and help with resumes and interviews. I found it full of useful points, and the list of suggested actions to list on your resume, based on the sort of job you're seeking, was especially useful. One thing I didn't like was the organization of the book - appendices were overused and broke up the flow, but that may have been fixed in more recent editions.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on the Social Worker's Career
I have been waiting for this edition to come out for over a year. Her last edition was great and her second is living up to my expectations.

The author is thorough and she has produced the best and most up-to-date information/how-to book on social work that I know of, and I've done my homework. She has written the material to cover most of the possible employment scenarios that a SW could find their selves in and has provided links and/or resources to follow-up for more detail if necessary. She addresses licensure, certification, billing, education and the post education development of the social worker's career. Resumes, cover letters, check-off lists, applications, interviews are topics covered in detail.

Chapters are: 1. Setting a Direction for Your Search; 2. Researching Market and Salary Information; 3. Preparing Resumes, Curricula Vitae, Portfolios, and References; 4. Identifying Jobs and Pursuing Leads; 5. Interviewing Effectively; 6. Evaluating Job Offers; 7. Career Management and Professional Development. Detail subheadings are given in each chapter (ex: Ch.1 - Assessing Your Strengths, Deciding on Your Objectives, Making Transitions, Preparing Your Message, and Moving On). It is published by NASW, and Amazon has the best price at this time.

Carol Doelling, thank you.....

Most thorough and useful guide for cover letters.

This is the best book on the market for writing cover letters. In addition to giving many articulate cover letters to peruse, the book has sections with examples of introductory paragraphs, middle sections, and closing paragraphs. Also, the book goes over the many different kinds of cover letters that exist, and explains which type is best for each job situation.

Oh, and for those people who are recent graduates or don't have that much experience- there are whole chapters for you with examples of very strong, well written letters. This is particularly nice because most cover letter examples in other books are strong letters because of the strong candidate- not because the letter is extremely well written. There are also chapters for the professional with years of experience.

This is the only book you need for writing cover letters! Do not waste your money on other guides that are not as complete.

2-0 out of 5 stars Reader reviews -- many from one (unidentified) reader?
As a reader who scrutinizes the reader reviews for books, just wanted to caution others to look at the source on many of the reviews for this book. While clearly not all the reviews seem disingenous, many have similar dates of postings, are very anonymous and haven't reviewed any other books, or recommend this book in all of their other reviews in the same way. Could be just coincidence, but might be an attempt to sell books, too. I take the trouble to point this out because one of the best things about Amazon is the veracity offered through their "reader review" section, and I hate to think that it may be being manipulated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it now
I looked at this book for weeks before I finally bought it.I just wish I had gotten it sooner. One tip in this book that I used that got me a job was to bring your resume and cover letter to the interview.I did, and I got the job.Once I started work my new boss said she gave me the job because she new I was prepared.I also followed one the resume formats found in this book, which I think got me the job. I also used some of the tips on negotiating that got me a better salary than the company was offering. Actually, this book is full of good info and insights.

Yes, some of the stuff in this book is basic, but there is other stuff that is just plain smart and creative.Take it from me a former job seeker this is book deserves to be on your book shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great follow up
I contacted the author, and he made time to discuss my resume and he even gave me a few pointers on my job search.I found his approachability refreshing, and reassuring.I have tried contacting other authors before, but to no avail, they act is if they are too busy for the people paying their bills. Not this guy, he is great, and straightforward about what I need to do with my career.

I would invest in this book for two reasons.First, it is well written.Just look at most of the reviews.Second, in his book he gives you an email address to write him at, and I did so I know he will respond to your emails, questions, and provide you with "customer support" at least that's what he called it.

2-0 out of 5 stars The book needs editing.
The book is full of typos and silly grammar mistakes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Well-Written Advise
Jason provides both motivational and practical advise on the art of finding a rewarding career. He starts with the necessity of truly understanding yourself and what makes you feel fullfilled. Upon that base he then proceeds with builidng the structure of how to find a job that provides you with the fullfillment you desire.Although some of what is in the book could appear self-evident, it is still a good reinforcement and reality check for even the most sophisticated professional. ...
