The ultimate guide for college students and grads seeking interviews in a tough economy. It explains how to:

(1) transform even modest educational achievements and non-paying life experiences -- from hobbies and travel to family circumstances and extracurricular activities -- into persuasive statements about abilities,

(2) generate job interviews by professionally fine-tuning resumes and cover letters specifically for each application, and

(3) prepare successfully for interviews by writing persuasive resumes and cover letters.

REVEALS RESUME-WRITING SECRETS:

* what to include when you lack paid professional experience

* how to get great references even from people you don't know well

* why to use a summary statement instead of an objective statement in most fields

* when to include hobbies, travel, and technology skills

* why you should NOT list most courses already taken

* what to do if your GPA is unimpressive

* which designs and basic templates work the best

* how to determine the perfect verbs and adjectives for a specific job

* the 5 things you MUST address in a cover letter

SPECIAL FEATURES

* an in-depth index so you can find exactly what you need

* before-and-after samples of rewritten resumes and cover letters

* a helpful flow chart for writing resumes and cover letters

* "Dr. Q’s Tips" based on actual student and alumni experiences

* "Expert Advice" quotations from dozens of publications not online

* a categorized list of "action verbs" that appeal to potential employers

* sample resumes with accompanying cover letters

THE AUTHORS

Quentin Schultze, Ph.D. (AKA "Dr. Q"), is a well-published and prize-winning author, a popular speaker, and an award-winning college teacher with over 30 years experience mentoring students and graduates. Bethany Kim is a writer, teacher, and consultant on teaching English to adult learners.

ENDORSEMENTS

"This superb book explains how students and graduates can demonstrate that they're equipped for a job when they don't have any formal job experience to reference. Wish I had it 20 years ago."-- Gary Van Prooyen, Global Brand Director, Motorola, Inc.

"Practical and inspiring. If more of the resumes that come across my desk used this advice, hiring would be a lot easier. The appendices alone are worth the price of the book."-- Kevin Jeffer, Partner, Chief Creative Officer, re:creative

"I used to teach resume writing without a textbook because none of them really covered all the essentials. That's over. This book has all the nuts and bolts college-aged job hunters need."-- Professor Kathy Bruner, Taylor University

"I am making this book required reading for all my students."-- Professor Kevin T. Jones, Director of Internships, George Fox University

"Great for today’s fiercely competitive job market!"-- Scott Stegenga, Partner Manager, Yahoo! Search Marketing

"Brilliant! Should be required reading for every career-bound college graduate." -- Professor Peter A. Kerr, Asbury University

"Finally, a book I can recommend on writing resumes and cover letters!"-- Professor John Pauley, Eastern University

"WOW!I can't wait to get copies for my students."-- Professor Barbara Spies, Cardinal Stritch University

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-changing; Must Read
This is a must read for anyone who has trouble creating the right resume. But its impact is much more poignant than a simple guide to beefing up your fact sheet. It provides the encouragement everyone needs when they are between jobs and wondering where their energies should be spent. It is life changing. In fact, it made me step back and reassess my own career, pull out my resume and tweak it too.

When the idea of writing a review for Quentin Schultze's latest book How to Write Powerful College Student Resumes & Cover Letters came to me, I was more than a little hesitant. It's not because of the author. Of all of my required readings in college, Dr. Q's book Redeeming Television was my favorite. It was the topic that put me in the wrong frame of mind. Reading a book about resumes isn't my first choice for leisure activities; but I accepted the challenge. Before I was finished with the first sentence, though, I was enjoying it more than most other self-help books I've read in the past.

I don't like fluff, and I hate the idea of wading through endless stories to get to the reason I bought a book. This book is no such thing. It is enjoyable to read, easy to digest, and full of practical, poignant advice. Read it with your resume open, and make edits as you go. It'll force you to think about who you are and appreciate things about yourself that you may have overlooked in the past.

I got it two weeks ago, read it in one week and have already ordered three copies to give to friends. As director of outreach (outreach pastor) for a church and board member for a nonprofit community service agency, I recommend this book to anyone involved in the competitive world of job shopping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Resume and Cover Letter Book
In today's competitive market, it is essential to present the best possible resume. This book is one of the best that I've read for helping college students develop effective resumes and cover letters.

* Provides step-by-step directions to develop your resume

* Helps you incorporate not only what you have learned in college, but also your life experiences and personality attributes into your resume

* Provides actual resume and cover letter examples--and common mistakes to avoid

* Is chock full of expert advice and practical tips. For example, you should not add your GPA to your resume unless it is spectacular. Or you should not "pad" your resume with keywords that don't reflect your actual experience...great advice!

* Helps you focus your resume on your audience--the hiring manager, and to finely tune it for each position that you are applying for

* Helps you develop a resume that shows that you are the best applicant for the job

* Provides useful information on how to use persuasive and carefully chosen language and precise wording

* Helps you with formatting so that your resume will be easy to read and transmitted properly

* Provides useful information about how to add references and how to write cover letters

* Includes practical tips on how and where to submit your resume

This book is thorough and well researched. Applying the techniques offered in this book will give you an edge over the competition and increase the chances of being contacted for an interview.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're looking for a job, you must get this book.
Professor Schultze's teachings on résumé success will give readers a
significant advantage in their careers. Not only did Professor Schultze's
classroom presentations help me in my career endeavors; they also set the
standard in my 7 years of experience as a manager when looking at potential
employee candidate's résumés. Schultze and Kim's well-designed and engaging
book is aimed at college students and college graduates, but it is just as
helpful for employers who have to make judgments about candidates based
largely on submitted resumes. The book sets the standard for both writing
and reviewing résumés. I recommend it enthusiastically and hope that the
authors might write follow-up books on topics such as interviewing and
job-searching. -- Holly Yavanian, Product Manager, InteSolv Business Systems

5-0 out of 5 stars For graduate and returning students
I teach in the graduate program at Spring Arbor University. Each semester I advise students who are fresh out of college and students who are returning to school (after several years in many cases) so they can advance in their occupations or start new ones. This book is something I plan to use with both groups of students. For graduate students fresh out of college, this book will help them to plan opportunities and seek out experiences that future employers desire. For returning students, this book will help them to leverage their existing work experiences. Graduate students lead busy lives, balancing school, family, and other obligations. Now I have something to give them that is clear, concise, engaging, and filled with practical tips and templates. This book will save me (and students) time and energy. That it is backed by 30 years of experience and sage advice takes the level of my own advising to the next level. In the short and long run, I believe this book will enable me to serve my students better. I've already purchased several copies to give away to students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Advice
This book has a lot of advice on (and more importantly great examples) writing resumes and cover letters. It was very helpful to be able to read about how to make a resume great.Especially for someone who hasn't had a whole lot of work force experience. What I found the most helpful, since I am a visual learner, were all the examples of resumes and cover letters in the appendix. This book is a great resource! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book for Job Hunting
Though there are many books written on this subject, this one was clearly the best I have read. It is clear, precise, and organized in away that gets right down to business (no pun intended). In fact, I have just graduated from business school with several job prospects thanks to the good advice in this book. It will always stay on my shelf as a great reference source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get the Interview every time
This book covers what hiring managers want and expect from job applicants and shows how to brush up on resume writing. It also helps prepare for the interview process and includes plenty of sample resumes. In the current economic environment, I expect it will become the bible for many job seekers.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Working
I used this book to help me revamp my resume. It's a tough job market, and I'm still looking for the right job for me, but I am getting interviews and I've been told that my resume is well done. I basically followed the sample resumes in Get the Interview Every Time to re-do my own resume and I've been getting good results.

This book was purchased as an update for the same book that was 10 years older. It is very helpful and current. Gives you cover letters for both mail and e-mail sending.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
This book helped me create many very professional cover letters. The greatest thing about this book is that it covers almost all the documents you need throughout the whole process except for resumes.I've already used it in networking letters, and thank you letters. If you are not very good at sentence structure, this book has some awesome phrases to help you out for any situation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fluff

As a manager, I review many cover letters a year.I would consider most of the example covers in this book of poor quality, with many downright "corney".I found nothing in this book useful to me personally (my focus was on creating on a good cover for a senior management position). This book is simply too broad in scope to have anything substantial to say about any one area. I'd re-title it "Beginning Cover Letters", and that would be generous.

I'd advise anyone considering purchasing this book to thumb through it at a physical bookstore first (but always buy from Amazon if you decide you like it :-) ).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I haven't finished reading every chapter, but the chapters I have read are excellent.I can't wait to use the suggestions! This is the best book I have read on cover letters!I bought several books from resume's to cover letters and interview books and I have to say, this is the best one I have read.My suggestion is to purchase this book.

Seller was excellent. The seller was fair, and a sheer pleasure to do business with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Saver!
I purchased the book "Ten Steps to a Federal Job" in January of this year 2008.I filled out my first application after reading the book in March 2008 was interviewed May 21,2008 and offered a job with the Federal Government on June 4, 2008!!!!!!! I started June 23, 2008.

I am so excited after 12 years of trying and going through the process so incorrectly, *I figured that out after reading the book*.

I would recommend you purchase the book immediately if you had any hesitations before don't it absolutely worked for me!If you are tired of working for the private sector and want to get into the highly competitive Federal Government get this book.

It is a must have and a best seller in my book!

Thank you Kathryn Troutman :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book... For Real
I just used this book to apply for a job with the Federal Bureau of Prisons a month ago. I received a response via email and two weeks ago I received a notification. This book was really helpful on assisting me with my resume. This is really an investment that you should get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best employment book I have ever read!
I had been looking for a Federal job for five years; after reading and applying the principles in this book, I landed a GREAT position at the VA within weeks! This book prepared me for all aspects of the selection process ...right down to the second interview, the questioning process, and how to follow up. If there is one book to have in your search for a Federal job, it's this one. Use this and any resources that Ms. Troutman has ...it is well worth any price!

4-0 out of 5 stars Generalized but included good ideas
This book gives hints and advice for any type of federal job applicant. If you're seeking information specific to an agency, you will NOT find it here. However, this book has outstanding sample interview questions- I would have never thought of them but can see them asked in any interview. Also, there are about 15 different resume formats with tips on information that federal resumes require that you would never list on a private sector resume. All in all, this book was helpful in creating a great federal resume and preparation for general interview questions.Again, don't count on it for specific agency information. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Old, dated, and of little use to me
The alleged "201 Killer Cover Letters" were written in 1995 according to the enclosed disk and are not very professional in my opinion. They are of little use in today's job market, again in my opinion.

Thefront cover claims one is able to "downplay your weaknesses" byadhering to the principles in this book. One of my weaknesses waspurchasing this book in the first place.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book
Most useful are the "do's & don'ts" for job hunting correspondence. These along with other common sense suggestions which escape many of us can be found in this book.Having the samples in bothbook and diskette form is useful as it saves time. However, the samplesthemselves are pretty much what one can find by logging on to almost anywebsite career site. Nothing special except the convenience of having themin one spot.

5-0 out of 5 stars A TRUE PROFESSIONALLY WRITTEN COVER LETTER BOOK

5-0 out of 5 stars Ten Rules for Writing 201 Killer Cover Letters
What do you talk about in your resume? ME ME ME ME. What do you talk about in your interview? ME ME ME ME. So Rule 5 of Podesta and Paxton's book (Podesta is an advertising copywriter and Paxton is a recruiter), "ELIM-ME-NATE" tells you to focus on the needs of your prospective employer in your cover letter. The 9 other top rules for writing "killer" cover letters are just as enlightening as well as humorous. I do tend to disagree with Rule 3: In Response To Your Ad...NOT! - Don't use standard openings. I've actually had HR professionals request such standard openings so that they can keep track of who is applying for which ad in which newspaper. But that is the real value of this book: it shows you how to write killer openings and closings for any situation. There is an index of letters listed by issue, with a corresponding chapter and letter number to refer to. What's more, you can get through this book in a hurry, and all of the sample letters are on diskette that is included. So if your cover letters "...Ain't Working," then "...Fix It" with one of 201 different approaches (Rule 10)

5-0 out of 5 stars Sample letters for job searches.
Good letters for getting, keeping, refusing, and quitting jobs.It has its own PC diskette, so that it is not necessary to retype letters for personal use.I suspect that it's the only cover letter book on the market to come with a PC diskette. ... Read more

This book provides a lot of great insight for the federal job process. As a young professional, I really appreciated all the tips and tricks the author added to really round out the job search process. I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars What an excellent resource!
I take strong exception to Roger Mart's criticism of How to Land a Top-Paying Federal Job.I wonder if Mart has even read How to Land a Top-Paying Federal Job, because the book provides important, reader-friendly insider advice about federal jobs that other books don't even touch--such as salary negotations that may be worth tens of thousands of dollars, explanations of how hiring managers think, how federal applications are really screened, and templates for quickly churning out applications, to name just a few features. The book is not only comprehensive but also current and up-to-date because it is written by a current federal employee who works in the federal system--not someone who retired years ago.It is clearly the best book on federal jobs available. I whole-heartedly recommend it to seekers of jobs in the federal sector as well as the private sector.

This book was incredibly helpful to me when I was looking for a new job.I was transitioning from academia into the public sector and this book became my go to resource. It helped me convert my CV into a resume, write a great cover letter, work on my interview questions and get a higher salary!I do not know what I would have done without this book.It gave me the courage to write a non-traditional cover letter, which was read by the prospective employers and probably helped me get the interview.I would highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a federal job or any job. This book is a big reason I have a new job!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide
I really like the insights into the Federal hiring process provided by this book. Since the author is a full-time Federal hiring manager, I find her information refreshing, helpful and enlightening. She provides a "real world" perspective about what to do and what to expect. Although she gives a high level view of how to write a Federal resume, her example resumes are a very good guide to follow. Overall, I like her approach and advice concerning how to land a good job with the Federal Government. I recommend her book highly to anyone that is serious about getting a top paying Federal job. ... Read more

This book contains all you need to know about cover letters, and in a pretty digestable format (a la the dummies series). The author cuts to the chase, throws in some humor, and gives plenty of options for ways to grab your audience's attention. Works for me. I've actually read quite a few books on cover letters (lots of free time while unemployed) and this one stands out to me--at least it's the one I keep on my bookshelf.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor and disregard this book
Mr. Betrus claims to be an experienced recruiter, and perhaps he is.Honestly, I sincerely hope he does at least an acceptable job as a human resources specialist than he does as a writer. This is a sloppily written book, full of carelessness and averagely-written phrases.I still cannot comprehend how a company of the caliber of McGraw Hill has sponsored it.When an author himself admits not to be particularly gifted at writing, he should then, in my opinion, avoid the exercise altogether.Only then can the reader who desperately needs advice on how to compose the perfect cover letter be spared the use of mundane expressions like "a lot of" over and over in his or her writing.

For someone who preaches über-revision throughout the job application experience, the pièce de résistance for summa cum sloppiness came for me when on page 37, fictionalized (?) job-seeker Cynthia E. Goodman states that she and his wife went to see "The Phantom of the Opera" together, where she / he (?) met the potential recruiter to whom the letter is directed. As much as I want to think the author is a staunch supporter of gay rights, the statement represents to me the epitome of a job poorly done with total disregard to detail.Even when here and there the book suggests a good idea to incorporate in a cover letter, they are by no means nothing stellar. In fact, I have found much better suggestions on cover letter writing on books that are not necessarily fully targeted to the task, such as "How to land a top-paying federal job" by Lily Whiteman. Please consult other sources and skip this one, unless of course, you want to be thought of as ordinary and utterly replaceable while trying to land a job of any kind. You'll be wise to dump this one into the trash can, as I did. ... When I first saw your web I said to myself these people cant be for real
guess what you are for real. All of your products are affordable and
the quality is amazing for the price. I purchased several books mostly
about how to write the best cover letter and resume the books were used
and in awesome condition. There is one problem your shipping and handling cost are through the roof please try to work out some deals with this issue.
    Best Regards.

2-0 out of 5 stars I may be a complete idiot, but...
What a disappointment! This book is really geared towards people with a wealth of experience. Every example seems to cite 12 years of X, successful projects in Y, AND you're friends with the hiring manager. (I'd assume, though, that with all that under your belt, you've probably written a cover letter or two.) If you're a new grad or don't have a background in your field, you're not going to find much help here.
Another issue I had with the book - the resumes can be incredibly corny. I like puns and googled quotes as much as the next person, but I would never include them on a resume. I found a lot of the resumes lacked sophistication in exchange for a more 'personal, informal' tone.
Overall, I didn't get much help from the book and would recommend passing on this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too great for New Grads
This book does offer some good tips but I wish that it had a better section for New Grads. If you've been in the business world for a few years then this book does offer some good advice. However, if you're just out of school, you might want to consider another book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
    Great book!

You can forget about writing boring cover letter that is becoming predictable by using this book as a guide.

The book is much more than a gallery of cover letters, although it is that as well. The first quarter of the book takes you through building your own cover letter from scratch and assists you in tailoring it to specific ads/conditions (i.e. pre-interview/no interview etc). This alone was quite useful. The remainder of the book is a huge omnibus of every imaginable type of cover letter, broken down by industry and also format. There are at least 8 to 10 cover letters per industry/type of job and each is written in a different format and by persons of differing circumstances. It will definitely get your creative juices flowing and assist you in crafting a perfect cover letter for the job you want. I almost forgot, there is a section containing eye catching resumes as well.

I have written three to four cover letters using the tips from the book, and also some of the examples for inspiration (I'll let you know how it goes :) ). This is definitely top notch and does precisely as advertised. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Key Book for Professionals in Understanding Emerging Media
I have worked with Joe Grimm for years in his role as a journalism recruiter and major voice through the Poynter Institute in advising professionals about this rapidly changing profession. Through a grassroots network of post-newspaper media professionals, I helped Joe publish this new edition of his book.

As a co-founder of a grassroots, journalistic, new-media company, I wanted to add here a short list of what I would consider "must read" books for anyone diving into this field:

"Linked: How Everything Is Connected to Everything Else and What It Means" -- If you're trying to "break into" media, as Joe's book describes, you need to be aware of the critical importance of social networking now -- and how those networks form.

"Long Tail, The, Revised and Updated Edition: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More" -- An essential book about how media voices can be marketed in this new era.

"Aiming at Amazon: The NEW Business of Self Publishing, or How to Publish Books for Profit with Print on Demand by Lightning Source and Book Marketing on Amazon.com" -- The gorilla in the dining room of new media is Amazon -- so you'd better know how it works.

"Quoting God: How Media Shape Ideas about Religion and Culture" -- If you care about the niche that's closest to my own work -- the vast implications of spirituality in American culture -- then there's not a better book than this one to understand these trends.
