3-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Information
I got this book as a complement to Resume Magic. At first I thought that 443 pages was way too much information for something that should be easy to write. The book is so long because it has 100s of examples which really help the reader to understand how to write a cover letter.

The most valuable chapter in the book is Chapter 3 - Writing Your Cover Letters. This chapter goes into depth the steps to write an outstanding, winning cover letter. However, you don't find out until Chapter 4 that the long cover letters written in Chapter 3 do not apply to email cover letters.Which is how 95% of cover letters are sent today.:(

The book also offers ways in which to handle disclosing salary requirements and salary history. As this was something I needed help with, I found the information extremely useful.

There are 120+ pages devoted to sample cover letters for Blue Collar & Trades Positions, Young Professionals/New Graduates, Mid-Level Career Professionals, Senior Managers & Executives, Technical & Scientific Professionals, and Career Changers.I found these samples invaluable.I used them to compare my cover letter to the ones written by professionals.

There are 100+ pages devoted to the other parts of your job search -- Thank You Letters, Tips & Techniques from Recruiters, Next-Generation Job Search Letters, Winning Resume Strategies, and tips and techniques to recession-proof your career.None of these chapters really added anything to the book. You will find more useful advice in a resume book and a career management book.

Overall, I found this book provided too much information.I recommend 15-Minute Cover Letter: Write an Effective Cover Letter Right Now (15 Minute Cover Letter) instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book, but...
I borrowed this book from a public library, and I'm planning to buy it once I return the one from the library. This book greatly informs the readers about these "red flags" that may hurt them on landing their perfect job.

But beware... this book tends to call the readers "losers" if you have more than one of those "red flags" and may make you depress if you keep reading. So don't go suicidal or something like that. The book doesn't tell you how to deal with them, so you have to buy their other book that deals with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will prove especially valuable for novice job seekers and those re-entering the job market
The newest addition to Impact Publications' impressive roster of "how to" books designed to help find and secure gainful employment, "Resume, Application, And Letter Tips For People With Hot And Not-So-Hot Backgrounds: 185 Tips For Landing The Perfect Job" outlines an effective 10-step job search process, proven ways to best present a work history, identifies the key attitudes and behaviors for success in securing employment, common job application writing errors to be avoided, redefining work or background negatives into positives, dealing with potential 'red flags' in your personal or professional history, follow-up methods to enhance your chances of securing a job, the different kinds of job search letters, and so much more. Enhanced with sample resumes and letters, self-assessment devices, evaluation exercises, and illustrations, "Resume, Application, And Letter Tips For People With Hot And Not-So-Hot Backgrounds" is a welcome and well-presented instruction manual that will prove especially valuable for novice job seekers and those re-entering the job market.

Product Description
For the first time, a book exists that compiles all the information candidates need to apply for their first Computer and Information Systems Managers job, or to apply for a better job.

What you'll find especially helpful are the worksheets. It is so much easier to write about a work experience using these outlines. It ensures that the narrative will follow a logical structure and reminds you not to leave out the most important points. With this book, you'll be able to revise your application into a much stronger document, be much better prepared and a step ahead for the next opportunity.

The book comes filled with useful cheat sheets. It helps you get your career organized in a tidy, presentable fashion. It also will inspire you to produce some attention-grabbing cover letters that convey your skills persuasively and attractively in your application packets.

After studying it, too, you'll be prepared for interviews, or you will be after you conducted the practice sessions where someone sits and asks you potential questions. It makes you think on your feet!

This book makes a world of difference in helping you stay away from vague and long-winded answers and you will be finally able to connect with prospective employers, including the one that will actually hire you.

This book successfully challenges conventional job search wisdom and doesn't load you with useful but obvious suggestions ("don't forget to wear a nice suit to your interview," for example). Instead, it deliberately challenges conventional job search wisdom, and in so doing, offers radical but inspired suggestions for success.

Think that "companies approach hiring with common sense, logic, and good business acumen and consistency?" Think that "the most qualified candidate gets the job?" Think again! Time and again it is proven that finding a job is a highly subjective business filled with innumerable variables. The triumphant jobseeker is the one who not only recognizes these inconsistencies and but also uses them to his advantage. Not sure how to do this? Don't worry-How to Land a Top-Paying Computer and Information Systems Managers Job guides the way.

Highly recommended to any harried Computer and Information Systems Managers jobseeker, whether you want to work for the government or a company. You'll plan on using it again in your efforts to move up in the world for an even better position down the road.

This book offers excellent, insightful advice for everyone from entry-level to senior professionals. None of the other such career guides compare with this one. It stands out because it: 1) explains how the people doing the hiring think, so that you can win them over on paper and then in your interview; 2) has an engaging, reader-friendly style; 3) explains every step of the job-hunting process - from little-known ways for finding openings to getting ahead on the job.

This book covers everything. Whether you are trying to get your first Computer and Information Systems Managers Job or move up in the system, get this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy!
I received the book just as told, new, on time and for a very reasonable price. I am very satisfied.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful job advice
This book helped me where my parents' advice had proved stale. Prior to reading this book, I was bouncing from temp job to temp job with only a vague idea of 'winning resume'.

I knew how to write a CV, but apparently did not know what made other types shine. When I had to leave my current job because of money issues, I knew that I could not afford to remain in the dark any longer. I had to get a resume writing guide and study it closely.

This book readily stood out from other titles which I flipped through. It showed me that a resume only needs to have stuff which is directly related to the position which I am applying to.

Because I am a visual learner, I appreciated the endless parade of sample resumes in this book; resumes should be both personal and professional.I finally learned that being creative with my resume was okay if I felt comfortable that my end result would be conducive to a job offer. A resume is only a 'calling card' and does not guarantee your job.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first book you should read on resumes
If you're only going to read one book on resumes, J. Michael Farr's "The Quick Resume & Cover Letter Book" should be the one you choose.Farr's no-nonsense, well-organized approach to writing resumes is refreshing as well as enlightening. He advocates taking an active role in job searching (and starting as soon as possible), as reflected in this quick tips on how to use his book and the first chapter, which focuses on creating a same-day resume.Farr clearly distinguishes chronological resumes from skills (functional) resumes, giving reasons to use either one and giving many examples of effective sample resumes. He includes several useful worksheets and lists of skills which help you identify what skills you have (and which ones you want to use) and list experiences that reflect your skills. These worksheets are not only helpful in writing resumes but also in interviews - Farr claims that most employers say that interviewees do not clearly explain what their skills are.

While the first section of the book aims to get you started on a good basic resume, the second section focuses on how you can make the resume even better. Those who are crunched for time should definitely read the first section. Farr also includes information on JIST cards, job search letters (including cover letters), a varied collection of resumes, and his list of seven steps to getting a job as soon as possible. At the end, there is a list of resume contributors who also offer resume-writing services.

While I found some of Farr's suggestions a little intimidating (e.g. cold-calling a potential employer to talk about how you can contribute to their organization - even if they aren't hiring), I realize that actively searching for job opportunities you will likely lead to finding the job I'm looking for (while creating networking contacts). This book is a well-written gem, and I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for a new job or a career change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Getting Started
I just started reading this book but so far so good. One thing it taught me in the first few pages is that I don't want a great resume, I want a great job.I've been so hung up on my resume that I forgot I was looking for a job. This book tells you how to get interviews and jobs also.Great tool. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 100 SAMPLE LETTERS!!!!!!!!!
I read through it and it is very well done. The writing is lively and you had alot of creative tips. It certainly was engaging for the subject matter. I particularly like your use of real-world examples and the 100 sample cover letters! The only thing I didn't like about the book was the cover, which seemed a bit cheezy. Barbara Mattleman

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!
I wanted a cover letter that would make employers sit up and look at me enough to offer me a paid internship. We were told in school that cover letters would either make us or break us to the point of nonexistence. So I bought your book at Amazon.com. Cover Letters That Will Get You the Job You Want is fantastic. Hit a bull's eye. I started to wonder how my old cover letters got responded to when there are the ones done by you going around. I read your book cover to cover, and I am now armed to write.

1-0 out of 5 stars I do not recommend this book at all
This book is definitley not worth considering if you want are trying to compose an effective cover letter. I have worked in human resources for several years and cover letters starting with either" books are asimportant as bread..." or "have you not found that granting loansinvolves knowledge...""I have been thinking of what else I mightdo to line up new buisiness opportunities..." are just not even worthreading. They do not catch one's attention or at least not the kind ofattention you want to attract. The examples provided in the book are nothingbut very simple written sentences like"...I wish I had space to listall of my qualities..."- I mean what kind of an excuse is that to makea letter short?I cannot believe this book was recommended on an onlinejob search. It is a joke!

I sure hope this review gets posted as I dothink bad reviews also have to be included to ensure the free marketplaceof opinion!heikecita

5-0 out of 5 stars It has revolutionized the way I write cover letters.
As a professional resume writer and career consultant, I am always looking for books with innovative strategies for developing materials, and this is among the best. Stan not only describes HOW to write a winning cover letter (capture attention, talk to your audience, etc.), but his book is chockfull of examples for professionals in just about every field. "CoverLetters that Will Get You the Job You Want" has revolutionized the wayI write cover letters, and the result has been a 100% increase in myreferral business. There are only a few cover letter books I recommendwhole heartedly. This is at the top of the list. -- Anne Follis, CertifiedProfessional Resume Writer, CareerPro, Peoria, Illinois

I was glad to see the very large number ofsample letters. That's important because students often tend to follow tooclosely examples we show them and not use their own creativity indeveloping their letters.Director, Office of Career Development, VassarCollege, Poughkeepsie, NY

Well organized and easy to read.I especiallylike the NOTE: on each letter.Alumni Placement Counselor, AuburnUniversity

A delight. The aggressive, accomplishment-based style is areal plus.Director, Career Center, St. John's University, Queens, NY

Don't worry-How to Land a Top-Paying Food Service Managers Job guides the way.
