5-0 out of 5 stars A unique book - worth every dollar
Its surprising nobody thought of writing something like this before. In Polished: Adding Shine, a recruiter--someone who spent his life hiring--explains what to do to impress recruiters, and what turns them off. Its very applicable and even funny too. Quick warning-- the price is steep. However, since it acts as a resume guide, cover letter guide, and interview guide at once, you do get three books in one. And, if you read it and use its techniques--and subsequently get hired like I did--it'll have paid for itself. Sounds like a good investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concrete and Concise
As a college student looking for a summer internship I found this book extremely useful since it shows you what an employer looks for in your resume or cover letter. Most career counselors or the Internet give you vague advice about emphasizing past tasks. This author shows you will be much better off focusing on illustrating transferable skills. He provides lots of examples and comments (often very funny) from his experiences recruiting for Goldman Sachs. He makes fun of statements like "I feel that I am a perfect fit for XYZ Company". It reminded me that nobody likes being around a square, although most resume and cover letter advice seems to think that coming across as pompous and dull will help you get a job. Thank you R. Scott Morris! My resume works better and I feel better about showing it to others.

Some other things I like about the book... It's concise. It provides a list of characteristics that employers look for. It has lots of examples of what to do and what not to do. For someone who's never written a resume or cover letter, it takes you from start to finish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective text on job applications
Polished was a surprising take on how to navigate the job application process. As a college student I found it quite readable and directly relevant. The "examples of what not to do" sections are funny, memorable, and effective.

I now know how application readers think when they assess a candidate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond useful and surprising
I'm a 19-year-old humanities major and I'm employed: why? Polished: basically the point of the book is to show "first time job seekers" (a very nice word for people who have no experience) how to turn what little you've done into an effective and alluring job application.

As importantly, it talks about what not to do: the author is some kind of recruiter, so a good portion is spent running through a list of secret things that cause them to throw out your materials. Trust me, you wouldn't think of them.

Give it a read, it worked for me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Advice
I found the book to be very informative. It has many excellent examples of how young job seekers should prepare for interviews and the job search. The examples provided are real and to the point. The reader can easily adapt and improve their own cover letters, resumes, and interview answers based on the pertinent stories provided by the author.

The author also provides many examples of what to avoid during the job search process. He warns job seekers of habits or approaches that remove them from job consideration even before the process begins. What a great thing to know for young graduates who have yet to hire or be part of the hiring and interview process.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for College Grads!
Wow, what a phenomenal resource!I'm a recent college grad and I had no clue of what to do for job interviews. This book covers absolutely every possible situation that could arise during the job search.

I read this resource, applied for job postings, and received a call for a phone screening for an open position.Because of the information in Job Interviews for Dummies, I did great on the phone screening and was called in for a second interview.Once again because of the points covered in this resource, I was able to properly prepare myself and walked into the interview 100% confident.I absolutely aced it!At one point even the interviewers were open-mouthed amazed at some of the questions I asked THEM!

It must have been a landslide victory over the other interviewees, for they immediately told me they were very interested in me, kept me in the loop through the whole interviewing cycle, and immediately called me as soon as they could to make an offer! It was the first official "interview" I ever had, and with a simple $17 investment I'm now making more than TWICE the amount of money as my entry-level job I was at before!Every College Graduate must have this resource!

Thank you Joyce Lain Kennedy!

3-0 out of 5 stars It helps

In the third page we find the following title: <> . This sentence describes well what the book is about. Its approach is very practical, many times superficial, sometimes cynical, but it gave me few good advices.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book that got me a job
I thought that all you had to do was copy a resume format and put your particulars in and you were set. That might have been why I was having trouble getting an interview much less a job.

What I learned from this book is that my attidute was probably the most important thing in a job hunt, both in my interviews or in my resume and cover letter.

I learned the most from the little story about what the sales manager said about the guy who came in and said he should be hired because he'd "like the job."After reading that I realized that some of the people who did talk to me probably felt the same way. They probably wanted to "Throw me out of their office."

I did revise my resume. I got more interviews and I did get a job.

I can recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sell Yourself
This book points out an important point that I had not realized - that it isn't enough that you are nice and a good worker, you must convince the employer that you will be the one to improve their business. This is the basis of how you will sell yourself.

An especially helpful section of the book asks you several questions that can help you formulate from your previous job experience what you could mention on your resume.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best resume book ever!
I purchased a digital copy of this book some time ago and bought this paperback version as a gift for someone who doesn't like reading on a computer.I couldn't help but browser through it to compare. This is the only book I've found that clearly explains the importance of attitude in job finding and how to show the employer you have what it takes to meet his needs. And I'll bet this is the only book that does it well in 90 plus pages.

This is a fast paced book.It takes you quickly through how to get into the proper mind-set and how to convey that to the employer so that he or she will want to interview you.Formats are covered by example in courier font so that even someone who needs to use an old-fashioned typewriter will have no trouble creating a resume that can catch the employer's attention in the short time the resume has. (The text also is in courier and I suspect that has to do with the vagaries of the original digital format, digital sometimes reformatting some fonts willy nilly, which would have wrecked havoc on the formatted resumes.)But the book makes it very clear that the content of the resume is much more important than format and the book makes it very clear how to make that content capture an employer's interest.

This book covers things I didn't see in the other resume books I've looked at.For example: Should you try and rush a resume out to get that job in today's paper?Or, what should you know about blind box ads?

Every trick the author used as a professional resume writer is included. Some people believe that personal information should no longer be in a resume, but here the author is writing about a competition. He explains that if you think personal data will help you get the job (for example if you're married you may appear more stable) use it.If you've seen the author's resume writing video's on youtube you know he knows what he's talking about. In fact, just reading the book, I can believe that everyone he wrote a resume for got the job they wanted.

The book is divided into two sections. The first deals with how to convey that you are the one for the job in your resume and then the second, deals with how to use your cover letter to get an interview. The book even explains about how to schedule interviews if you have to travel out of town. The cover-letter section gives tips on how to research the company you want to apply to, and just how to tune your cover letter so that it works with your resume to 'sell' you.

If you are looking for job this relatively short book will get your resume done quickly and if you follow the author's advice I'm sure you will get interviews just as I did.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the time or money
I bought this book based on the title and the reviews I had read. When the book arrived I was disappointed at the basic typewriter text style, which included both the information as well as the resume samples. If you are looking for formatted resumes samples, this is not the book for you (or me)!I also found the resume samples to be very out of date as they included personal data (marital status, height, weight, age, references to dependents & health status) which do not belong in resumes. If you want resume advice & great samples, try a book like "Resume Magic," but don't waste your time or money on the book "2009 Sell Yourself on Paper with a Competitive Resume-Cover-Letter Combination." ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Blah Blah Blah
This book promised to explain how to write a good cover letter instead of just giving examples, but the explanations were simplistic and very repetitive. The examples were ok, and I think it did have some good points, but overall too simplistic to be worth buying.I got basically the same information on cover letters out of the one chapter on cover letters in Job Hunting for Dummies. However to be fair this book did have info on approach and thank you letters which I had not heard yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book was WONDERFUL!-a "must have" for balletomanes
Having been a very young part of Andre Eglevskys' world (my mother, and I when I was old enough, took class daily with his teacher Maria Nevelska..."spelled "Nevelskaya" before coming to America) at Carnegie hall where he came frequently for class. This book brings back with clarity the attitudes, the "Feel" of the times, the dedication and love for the art of ballet, not only in the person of Nicolas Legat but of every person lovingly and sometimes humorously described. The sketches and caricatures are priceless...and so accurate! The classes described at the end are very helpful esp. to a teacher, advanced student, or ballet historian. The section on "the secret of the pirouette"you will want to try, it was the way I was taught and it works perfectly, and the section on Class Music is very in-depth and wonderful. Artistry at this level needs to once again be our dedication to the many facets of ballet...not just performance, but a life!Worth every penny! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars hmmmmm
I liked it and I would also recommend Interview tips from a chronic job hopper so when you get the interview you can get the job! it was written by the guy who wrote Mr Instability which is hilarious.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, helped be land interviews with several companies
I really enjoyed this book. It's a simple, straight-forward, easy to understand reference for getting your foot in the door and landing the career that you've always wanted. I highly recommend this book for anyone serious about landing the job of their dreams with a big company. After I read the book, I went [...] and started applying to several companies that I found interesting.I got interviews at several.

4-0 out of 5 stars More comprehensive than other résumé/cover letter books
This book is more comprehensive than other job hunting books in that it explains the basics of job searching, professional résumés, and cover letters very well. It gives some advice on where to search for jobs, networking, and how to send in job applications via electronic and written formats. If you are only going to buy one book to prepare for a job search and the application process, I would recommend this book over several others.

The downside of this book is that it does little to prepare you for the modern inevitability of having to submit your application through a standardized and faceless corporate website. Any advice on formatting your résumé, writing a cover letter, or writing professional contact emails is unnecessary when companies force you to "spray and pray" your application to their non-communicative and poorly staffed HR departments. Nothing is more discouraging than having your perfect cover letter and résumé butchered by having to fill in standardized forms on the web.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This book was very helpful. It has a lot of examples of cover letters and resumes. Also, it has comments from actual hiring managers and some contradict each other. That is helpful because it shows that not all HR departments feel the same way about resumes and the key is to appeal to as many as you can.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This book was very well done. There are many sample resumes in the back and also sample cover letters. The content of the book explained what to put on your resume and cover letter and what employers are looking for. This is a great resource for anyone looking for some guidance on how to develop their resume and cover letter. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Reader reviews -- many from one (unidentified) reader?
As a reader who scrutinizes the reader reviews for books, just wanted to caution others to look at the source on many of the reviews for this book. While clearly not all the reviews seem disingenous, many have similar dates of postings, are very anonymous and haven't reviewed any other books, or recommend this book in all of their other reviews in the same way. Could be just coincidence, but might be an attempt to sell books, too. I take the trouble to point this out because one of the best things about Amazon is the veracity offered through their "reader review" section, and I hate to think that it may be being manipulated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it now
I looked at this book for weeks before I finally bought it.I just wish I had gotten it sooner. One tip in this book that I used that got me a job was to bring your resume and cover letter to the interview.I did, and I got the job.Once I started work my new boss said she gave me the job because she new I was prepared.I also followed one the resume formats found in this book, which I think got me the job. I also used some of the tips on negotiating that got me a better salary than the company was offering. Actually, this book is full of good info and insights.

Yes, some of the stuff in this book is basic, but there is other stuff that is just plain smart and creative.Take it from me a former job seeker this is book deserves to be on your book shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great follow up
I contacted the author, and he made time to discuss my resume and he even gave me a few pointers on my job search.I found his approachability refreshing, and reassuring.I have tried contacting other authors before, but to no avail, they act is if they are too busy for the people paying their bills. Not this guy, he is great, and straightforward about what I need to do with my career.

I would invest in this book for two reasons.First, it is well written.Just look at most of the reviews.Second, in his book he gives you an email address to write him at, and I did so I know he will respond to your emails, questions, and provide you with "customer support" at least that's what he called it.

2-0 out of 5 stars The book needs editing.
The book is full of typos and silly grammar mistakes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Well-Written Advise
Jason provides both motivational and practical advise on the art of finding a rewarding career. He starts with the necessity of truly understanding yourself and what makes you feel fullfilled. Upon that base he then proceeds with builidng the structure of how to find a job that provides you with the fullfillment you desire.Although some of what is in the book could appear self-evident, it is still a good reinforcement and reality check for even the most sophisticated professional. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good info even if you think you know about job hunting.
I ended up getting a job before reading much of it.A local unemployment office displays posters by this publisher/author that have career & job hunting tips with the thinking behind the tips included. It was real smart stuff that I hadn't thought about or applied to my own efforts.Seeing those posters was enough to make me want to have the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great step-by-step advice
After about 10 years as an officer in the military and being told where my next job will be, I'm back in the civilian job market again. This book has been a great guide to the civilian job market.I highly recommend this book for 2 types of people...those who are just finishing school and looking for their first job, and those who are not particularly happy with their current career and want a change.

This book gives step-by-step advice for the entire process, from figuring out what you might like to do for a job to what to do after the interview is over. The detailed advice on finding jobs to apply for, writing a cover letter, calling a prospective employer, and preparing for the interview is fabulous. It has a lot of great advice along with several exercises to get you going on each step of your job search.

Do you have a hard time knowing what to say in difficult situations?Do you have a hard time figuring out how to sell your strengths to a future employer?Do you have a hard time figuring out how to reply to those difficult interview questions? This book covers all of these areas...it tells you exactly what you need to include in a cover letter, what sort of answers you need to be prepared for when you call a future employer, and how to safely answer those painful interview questions. This book includes a page of the 50 most common interview questions and suggestions for safe answers...by itself, these 2 pages are worth the price of the book.

If you are in the job market, the advice in this book is worth far more than they were asking. If you know a young person who is just entering the job market, this would be a perfect gift for him or her.

4-0 out of 5 stars Where are you in your job search?
If you have been out of the job market for quite a few years this is a good book to buy and read, as it goes through the step on how to apply for positions in the 21st century, i.e. networking, recruiters and internet. All of which is good information for the modern day job hunter. If you are not looking for this type of help then it is just a plain only book of examples and it is probably worth just browsing the internet for examples and not to buy this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite knockin' 'em dead
I used this along with "Cover Letter Magic" and "The Very Quick Job Search," and I prefer those over this one. Though certainly an improvement over the old "Enclosed please find" style, the examples throughout the book are still a bit stiff, unnecessarily wordy, and dated. There's also not as much variety as in the other books.

On meail cover letters, he gives a bit of misinformation, which suggests he may not be as up-to-speed on email limitations as he could be. Specifically, he suggests using a signature-styled font in an email. (That only works if the recipient has the same font on their PC.)

I liked the examples of "Resurrection" letters (basically a thanks for the rejection), but their use is never explained in the book, so there's nothing to suggest this tactic is effective. (The only mention in the other books is in "Cover Letter Magic." They advise against them.) My guess is that this would have to be done selectively and carefully. What may be seen as persistence by the job seeker may be interpreted by the potential employer as either not being able to take a hint or a desperate need to have the last word.

It's an okay book, particularly if your personal style is somewhat formal and "old school," but it's not worthy of its title.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great info!
Lots and lots of cover letters, styles and information. Very helpful!

Product Description
A 192-page book, Real-Resumes for Career Changers showsactual resumes and cover letters that helped real people change fieldsor industries. At a time when research shows that most working peoplehave three distinctly different careers, at last there is a book whichreveals the successful techniques involved in changingfields. Real-Resumes for Career Changers is based on the philosophythat an effective career-change resume must build bridges tonew opportunities. The Table of Contents is designed to showindividuals in varying degrees of career change and seeking differentgoals: finding a new career after motherhood, finding a new product tosell or represent, finding a completely different type of work to do,seeking a change but staying in the same industry, changing fieldswith absolutely no idea whats next, changing fields with a prettygood idea about whats ahead, and changing from self-employment tosomething totally different. Each resume and its companion coverletter shown is a picture of a successful career change, andthe theory behind the book is that a picture is worth a thousandwords. Real-Resumes Series editor Anne McKinney believes stronglythat career-change resumes are the most unusual and most creativebecause they are selling potential rather than experience.

All resumes in the book are one page in length, and all resumes areaccompanied by a companion cover letter. The book begins with a briefsection explaining the most effective job-hunting approachthedirect approach. This unique how-to book does not simply tellhow to write an effective career-change resume and cover letter;it shows how in page after page of meaty examples.

Other titles in the series being released in the year 2000 are:Real-Resumes for Teachers, Real-Resumes for Students, Real-Resumes forSales, and Real Essays for College & Grad School. ... Read more
