In today's job market, few people have traditional or conventional career paths. Research shows that the average worker will change jobs every two or three years, and will have three significant career changes during the course of his or her working life. Personal situations can complicate the mix.

Here's a book that tackles head-on those resume-writing challenges that may seem like insurmountable obstacles to job seekers with non-traditional backgrounds. In Resumes for the Rest of Us, veteran resume writer Arnold Boldt shares his professional knowledge and experience to help you prepare a resume that will effectively and positively capture the attention of your targeted employers--even if you have an unconventional work history.

Opening with a complete and easy-to-understand review of the resume-writing process, the first four chapters cover:
* Organizing your personal information.
* Developing a winning strategy for your resume.
* Writing and designing the resume to target specific audiences.
* Ensuring your resume is compatible with today's technology.

Beginning with Chapter Five, specific and proven advice is offered to job seekers in a broad array of categories, such as:

* "Blue collar" workers.
* Young-at-heart retirees pursuing new careers.
* Ex-offenders.
* Recent immigrants.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not enough useful information
If you're looking for a good book on how to write a compelling resume and prepare it for online use, I recommend you look elsewhere. While this book covers resume creation, as well as online format information, these sections are too slight to really help you write an effective resume, cyber-focused or not. The authors seem more interested in technology (OCR, resume software) and offbeat career search areas (government retirees, for example) than resume content.

While the more recent edition of this book may have more up-to-date job site listings (and the rating system is good), the listings in this edition are already out-of-date.

For a better book on resume writing that also covers much of the cyber territory, try Resumes for Dummies.

Most thorough and useful guide for cover letters.

This is the best book on the market for writing cover letters. In addition to giving many articulate cover letters to peruse, the book has sections with examples of introductory paragraphs, middle sections, and closing paragraphs. Also, the book goes over the many different kinds of cover letters that exist, and explains which type is best for each job situation.

Oh, and for those people who are recent graduates or don't have that much experience- there are whole chapters for you with examples of very strong, well written letters. This is particularly nice because most cover letter examples in other books are strong letters because of the strong candidate- not because the letter is extremely well written. There are also chapters for the professional with years of experience.

This is the only book you need for writing cover letters! Do not waste your money on other guides that are not as complete.

The 101 of the most current, most actual and beneficial Facts, Hints, Tips and Advice you can find from experts in the field on Resumes and Cover Letters:

2-0 out of 5 stars Reader reviews -- many from one (unidentified) reader?
As a reader who scrutinizes the reader reviews for books, just wanted to caution others to look at the source on many of the reviews for this book. While clearly not all the reviews seem disingenous, many have similar dates of postings, are very anonymous and haven't reviewed any other books, or recommend this book in all of their other reviews in the same way. Could be just coincidence, but might be an attempt to sell books, too. I take the trouble to point this out because one of the best things about Amazon is the veracity offered through their "reader review" section, and I hate to think that it may be being manipulated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it now
I looked at this book for weeks before I finally bought it.I just wish I had gotten it sooner.One tip in this book that I used that got me a job was to bring your resume and cover letter to the interview.I did, and I got the job.Once I started work my new boss said she gave me the job because she new I was prepared.I also followed one the resume formats found in this book, which I think got me the job. I also used some of the tips on negotiating that got me a better salary than the company was offering. Actually, this book is full of good info and insights.

Yes, some of the stuff in this book is basic, but there is other stuff that is just plain smart and creative.Take it from me a former job seeker this is book deserves to be on your book shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great follow up
I contacted the author, and he made time to discuss my resume and he even gave me a few pointers on my job search.I found his approachability refreshing, and reassuring.I have tried contacting other authors before, but to no avail, they act is if they are too busy for the people paying their bills.Not this guy, he is great, and straightforward about what I need to do with my career.

I would invest in this book for two reasons.First, it is well written.Just look at most of the reviews.Second, in his book he gives you an email address to write him at, and I did so I know he will respond to your emails, questions, and provide you with "customer support" at least that's what he called it.

2-0 out of 5 stars The book needs editing.
The book is full of typos and silly grammar mistakes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Well-Written Advise
Jason provides both motivational and practical advise on the art of finding a rewarding career. He starts with the necessity of truly understanding yourself and what makes you feel fullfilled. Upon that base he then proceeds with builidng the structure of how to find a job that provides you with the fullfillment you desire.Although some of what is in the book could appear self-evident, it is still a good reinforcement and reality check for even the most sophisticated professional. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A no nonsense book on resume writing
I was fortunate to be in a Masters program at Georgia Tech and to have the opportunity to attend a session with Gayle Oliver as a guest speaker. If you are looking for the ultimate guide to writing a truly good resume, this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars GOOD DEAL
What a great deal, this is not only a book, but also includes an interactive CD.Having the CD makes all the difference, it allows you to prepare your resume and cover letter using the examples provided by the author.Why struggle through this process when you can do it so simply and easily right on your computer with the CD.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!
After reading all those stellar reviews, I couldn't wait until I received this book, hoping to find something new or different.Each resume in the book is virtually the same, the formats are all the same, and all the helpful hints are rehashed from resume books that have been on the market for years, and which are less expensive.I'm sure it is a coincidence that the author is from Georgia, and all those excellent reviews are from Georgia.Save your money!Nothing new here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Investment!
My future's so bright I gotta wear shades! Thank goodness I found Execume! I was having a hard time getting interviews and decided to do a little research on resume writing. I followed the simple steps in the book andupdated my resume into a powerful representation of myself! Many interviewsfollowed. I was told that my resume stood head and shoulders above the restand that I was immediatly chosen to come in for an interview out of 700other resume's submitted. I landed an amazing job shortly thereafter! Butthe best part of all of this is that Execume helped me increase my salaryby $15,000!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Resume Book I have ever found
Execume was purchased as a gift for my college age daughter.It is the single best book I have ever read on the subject.

Execume is different!The author is so positive.She helps the job searcher believe in himself/herself.The examples were great in fact the depth of entry levelresumes sold me on the book.However there is plenty for everyone.Theauthor provides numerous examples by profession and format.

I wouldrecommend Execume as a great guide to develop a resume.I only wish thebook were available when I graduated from college or last changed jobs. ... Read more
