4-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool
A good resume is crucial for obtaining an interview with a potential employer. However, putting all of your skills, achievements, and goals on paper in a visually pleasant and unique way is not as simple as 1-2-3.Landing your dream job, whatever it may be, all depends on submitting a great resume.

"How to Write and Design a Professional Resume to Get the Job: Insider Secrets You Need to Know" is a valuable resource for individuals who want to find their perfect job.The beginning of the book encourages readers to analyze their own skills, likes, wants, and needs through reflective worksheets.Dale Mayer does a good job of including a variety of formats, styles, and types of resumes focusing specifically on the purpose and effectiveness of each kind. This book also details how succinctly highlight promising attributes and accomplishments without sounding like a broken record.

This book also contains information about the kind of career move you are making, and what kind of resume will be the most effective.Aside from thorough resume-writing advice, Mayer also includes interview and networking tips. This is a great career guide and contains valuable information for job-seekers everywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Write Resume
Did you know that the #1 trick to writing a winning resume is "knowing what you like, what you want, what you can do, and what you have to offer." Ms Mayer turns the daunting prospect of creating the right resume and finding the right job into an easily managed process.

Unlike books that simply give examples of standard resumes this book covers the basics as well as offers worksheets to help the job seeker get started. There are also chapters that deal with special cases (criminal past, job history problems, over qualified, under-qualified) and information on how to research jobs and how to prepare for the interview. Sample targeted resumes and case studies are also offered as well as specialty resumes (for the executive, military career, the self-employed, the student resume).

Whether you are looking for your first or next job this book is the perfect companion. Helpful web sites and a CD-ROM are included. Professional resume writer Caroneau Roberts has written the foreword.

Also, part of the profits from this book will be donated to The Humane Society of the United States in honor of "Bear" a rescued dog who served as "Vice President of Sunshine" at Atlantic Publishing.

4-0 out of 5 stars What you need to need to stand out amongst the pack...
With unemployment on the rise at startling rates, now more than ever job seekers are finding that having a top-notch resume is absolutely vital to securing employment. Job seekers are facing competition with not dozens, but hundreds of other applicants resulting in the need to stand out amongst the pack like never before. Dale Mayer's book How to Write and Design a Professional Resume to Get the Job is a must-have for anyone cruising the want ads.

From the basics of good resume construction to an overview of various resume styles, Mayer gives readers a comprehensive direction on how to put their best foot forward. Best of all, the sample resumes the author includes throughout the book make the process that much easier.

Another extraordinary aspect of How to Write and Design a Professional Resume to Get the Job is the number of helpful worksheets scattered throughout, most notably the Self Assessment & Work Values worksheets which aid job seekers in determining their best assets. I also love the various case studies given which bring real-world insights to the forefront. Lastly, with emphasis on new technologies such as web resumes and video resumes, Mayer demonstrates that her information is not only relevant and up-to-date, it's cutting edge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost Guaranteed to Land you a Job
How to write and design a professional résumé to get the job : insider secrets you need to
know : with companion CD-ROM / by Dale Mayer; Atlantic Publishing Group, Inc., book; 290 pages.

It's no secret there are many books, CD's, programs and lectures on Resumes, job hunting, interviewing and the like, but Dale Mayer does a remarkably well job in this book.
Mayer covers quite a few subjects. Not only Resumes, but different types of resumes, from the student to mid- or change-career resumes, as well as executive and self-employment resumes, but also interview tips, online resumes, portfolios. There literally, is something for everyone.
Mayer goes into detail on each type of resume, even providing worksheets, examples and statements from professionals in the industry.Worksheets are mostly for those who have never written a resume, such as students or those coming from a displaced home. The examples are timely and easily understood, for beginners and those who are writing a resume after an extended absence. The short statements from professionals are well-written and show a glimpse into what other Resume professional writers suggest, underscoring Mayer's professionalism.
The pace of the book is steady, no subject or area was either rushed or plodding. The language is easy to understand, the examples are well laid out and the tone is of a discussion, rather than a lecture or berating the reader.Mayer is to be congratulated on writing an easy to understand book that gives so many people looking for work such a difficult time.
Even the most hardened job seeker will find tidbits to draw from.Do you have a Brand?Would you like one? What about an online video resume?Or a Weblog or webpage to highlight yourself or skills?
This book deserves a five star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
As a communications writer, I am often the resource for friends needing writing help. I have helped several friends rewrite their resumes with the help of this book and turn them into something fantastic. Although a bit dated, the book is really great, giving a lot of strategy behind the thinking and a ton of sample resumes. I thought I lost my copy for a little while and was completely ready to purchase another copy because it is just that valuable. Super helpful and a definite keeper in your business library!

5-0 out of 5 stars I use these techniques ALL the time!
I purchased the pdf version of this book online in 2000. It is not the complete version of the book this one is and has only 142 pages of text, but it may have been the wisest purchase I I've ever made!Unlike the last reviewer, I believe Proven Resumes is worth every single penny and much more!

I would like to note that I am in a career field that does, in fact, require a chronological resume, and yet I use the wonderful self-selling techniques Ms. Pontow shares on my own resumes consistently, and it has truly paid off, not only financially, but in my belief in my own abilities. In just the four years since applying this system, my income has increased by half, paying me back a thousand fold, yearly, of my initial purchase price!

I have also used Proven Resumes to help other people with their resumes, and MOST of them have used the skills-based format, and MOST of them have achieved their employment objectives with these resumes. For instance:

A part-time teacher aide with teaching credentials but no professional teaching experience is now a full-time kindergarten teacher.A grocery store cashier obtained a position as a paralegal secretary.Another grocery store cashier, who had worked at the same store for 20 years and had never written a resume before, is now happily settled in a full-time bank teller position.A veterinarian friend who was applying for a year-long leadership training project was rejected the first year she applied, but the second year, after I re-wrote her resume using Proven Resume techniques, she was accepted. Oh, yeah, and I helped my teenage son with his skills-based resume, and he is now working as a website technician / reporter... an incredibly amazing first job!

I would like to make one more plug: These techniques can be used for more than just job resumes.I write up a skills/project based "annual report," if you will, for my annual reviews, so that I can prove to my boss that my skills are growing, and I'm consistenly making the workplace better (You don't stop selling yourself just because you've landed a job). I've used the quantifying and qualifying techniques to write persuasive proposals. And I used a skills-based resume to apply for, and obtain, a position on a state-wide board of directors. It's not just about GETTING a job!

For just a few dollars more, this book has nearly twice as much information as the still-available-online version. It's a bargain!

1-0 out of 5 stars Be prepared to re-write
I purchased this book about a year ago to assist in a job search I was doing.Initially, I was very excited; I felt the strategies made sense and the results were positive changes in my resume.

Unfortunately, the recruiting industry may not be ready for this radical change in resume strategies.Nearly 100% of the people who responded to my resume submissions said "You have a great skill set, but I really need this resume re-done in a traditional, chronological style."Who knows how many never bothered to respond?

Some of the information in the book is valuable, especially the keyword mapping items, but it certainly is not worth the price tag.

5-0 out of 5 stars These strategies work ...
Once I made the decision to move on I needed a little help in repacking my experience. This book not only helped me rethink my skill set but also expanded my horizons.I was able to make a substantial jump using some of Pontow's recommendations.I passed the book onto others looking to make a move.Well worth the $ ... and I'm happily on a new career path!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is it!
Regina Pontow has to be the undisputed goddess of resume examples, interview strategies, and heroine of the entire career imbroglio.Read it,flip through it, cut and paste to your heart's content. She has the POWERto drive your words. ... Read more

At last, a guide to résumé writing whose every page is asquickly scannable as they say a good résumé should be. In 72 brightly designed pages, this pocket-size career helper walks you through the entire résumé writing (or rewriting!) process, from determining your overall career objectives and strategy and targeting your résumé to specific fields or employers to drafting and refining your résumé's content, selling your experience, deciding on the overall format and look, and adapting your résumé for a career change, a midcareer job move, or a return to the job market after an absence. Throughout, loads of résumé samples, examples, checklists, and flow charts help you piece it all together, including tips on replying to job advertisements, canvassing employers, using the Internet, keeping up your job search, and analyzing your own career profile.

It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty li'l books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies book series's talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-size bits and sidebars with Dorling Kindersley's signature design style of crisp, classy graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any uniqueindividual perspective. Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightlydesigned and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last few pages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for more in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so cute and look so smart in a neat little stack or row that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire staff or department. --Timothy Murphy ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Concise And Practical Resume Advice
The DK "Essential Managers" series is a great value in the world of business publications. They are all very goal oriented and full of practical, real-world advice that is universally applicable.

In this volume Simon Howard (Robert Heller is often incorrectly credited with authorship) details the basics of resume writing and job search skills. The advice is generally excellent and is concisely delivered with separate chapters focusing on important resume writing skills such as format (mainly chronological versus functional), dealing with employment agencies, formulating cover letters, presentation of education and experience, etc.In the final few pages he provides samples of resumes of differing focus for diverse situations such as first time job seeker, returning to work, career changers, etc.

This is not a book of numerous differing sample resumes to be used as templates, rather, it is a quick reference guide to the basics of resume writing and job searches. The book is not exhaustive, but is not meant to be: it is compact, practical, and easy to use. I recommend this book, especially to people just beginning to formulate their resume. ... Read more

This book really helped me do some soul-searching the last time I looked for a job. It leads you through a series of easy exercises to make you think about your strengths and weaknesses, and lays the groundwork for finding your ideal job. It also offers a lot of sensible, practical advice about what to do and what not to do, most of which I now feel is indispensable to a job search. I recommend this book to you if you are interested in learning more about yourself and how you stand out in the world. 2-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Information
JSM is the perfect reference book for professional career counselors. For the rest of us,this book is much too long. I borrowed it from the library, then bought it from Amazon since I still wasn't done plodding through it after 3 weeks. If you are looking for a book on building and managing your career, I recommend, Expect to Win by Carla Harris. For a guide to finding a job, try The KISS Guide to Managing Your Career by Ken Lawson from DK Publishers. If you do buy JSM, no need to invest $13 on Resume Magic. The section included here is sufficient(I bought RM too).Job Search Magic, is full of exercises designed to uncover your natural talents and corresponding industry match. My suggestion: borrow this book from the library (if you must) and select only the chapter topics you need (interviews, salary negotiation, resume writing etc).

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a job.Make sure you check out Resume Magic and Interview Magic. These books are excellent as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Solid information
This is a good book onhow to conduct a job search for the job that you really want.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
This Job Search guide is so god that I felt compelled to write a review so others will know that it stands out from the rest. There are so many books out there on the job hunt and most say the same old thing - this one says a lot of the "same old things" but also holds a lot of practical advice and tips that you will only hear from someone who has been through a successful job search recently.

The book is comprehensive starting with "what do I do next?," moving to the basics of resume writing and interviewing and closing with negotiating for salary. In each section, and in an appendix at the end of the book, are invaluable "Magic Tips."

There is just one bad thing about this book - it is large and heavy because it is jam packed with so much good information. ... Read more

For anyone hunting for a job I highly recommend this book, it's a must read. It has helped me write my resume many times over the last few years. Better yet, it's helped me to get a number of jobs, including the one I'm at now that I started working at in December when the job market really fell apart.

Come to think of it that is the real test of a resume book, can it help you get a job when the job market is really bad? Take your time and read it carefully and thoughtfully, Tom really knows what he is talking about. ... Read more
