Product Description
This volume moves beyond traditional studies of Jordan's politics to explore the interplay between politics and economy. Examining the phenomenon of market reform in the developing world, Timothy J. Piro assesses the state's contradictory impulses toward privatization and continued state intervention in the economy. Drawing on a wealth of primary materials, the author illuminates the kingdom's unique politics and argues that market reform is dependent on domestic rather than international political structures. ... Product Description

A towering figure in the history of Jordan, King Hussein reigned for nearly half a century, from his grandfather’s assassination in 1953 to his own death in 1999. In this fascinating biography, Nigel Ashton recounts the eventful life of the king who not only survived but flourished amidst crisis after crisis as ruler of a poor desert nation surrounded by powerful and hostile neighbors. Hussein skillfully navigated complicated relationships with the British, his fellow Arab leaders, the new bordering state of Israel, masses of dispossessed Palestinians within his kingdom, every U.S. president from Eisenhower to Clinton, and every British prime minister from Churchill to Blair. This book illuminates the private man, his key relationships, and his achievements and disappointments as a central player in the tough world of Middle Eastern politics.

Ashton has had unique access to King Hussein’s private papers, including his secret correspondence with U.S., British, and Israeli leaders, and he has also conducted numerous interviews with members of Hussein’s circle and immediate family. The resulting book brings new depth to our understanding of the popular and canny king while also providing new information about the wars of 1967 and 1973, President Reagan’s role in the Iran-Contra affair, the evolution of the Middle East peace process, and much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books ever written
Nigel Ashton comes from one of the best schools for politics and economics and he proves it with this work. He has always written great works but this one is by far the best. He gives a great account of King Hussein's life and went to great depths to get these sources. He really finds great sources which must have taken him years to do. The book gives a great balanced story of an important Arab leader after World War II.
Side note, the book is about 350 pgs long, notes and bibliography make it 450 so dont be discouraged. Also the book is ridic heavy because of the paper material is fantastic ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A sympathetic, insider's view of the Carter White House
Jordan's book gives a good insider's view into White House operations. It is very sympathetic to Carter, and implies that Jordan continues to hold a great deal of admiration for Carter even after years of working for him, which says something very positive about Mr. Carter. This sort of personal, I-was-there-history is very valuable, but of course it needs to be read alertly and with a critical mind. For someone like me, who has not read heavily into the policies and decisions of the Carter Administration, this book should be balanced with the opinions of others outside the Administration.

Interesting read, but it leaves lots of questions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting insight into Carter administration
I was born into the Reagan administration, and always heard horror stories from my parents about Carter's presidency. This book helped put the complaints I've heard about Carter into perspective.

Overall, the book paints Carter's advisers as conflicted and Carter himself as somewhat indecisive on certain issues that came back to bite him again and again during his last year in office. Overall a good read, excellent if you are into politics or studying Poli-sci.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Light, Easy to Read Review
This book does not hit the Bob Woodward standard of a blow-by-blow account covering all participants, but it does offer an interesting view of the situation. I would have liked more discussion of the economic issues, but maybe there just was not the focus on them by Carter (that may explain the outcome of his administrations economic record). The author does write in an easy to follow method and comes off as more of a conversation between friends in place of a heavy political review. This is an interesting book that is worth the time if you are interested in the political environment during the hostage crises. There are better reviews of the election process namely by Elizabeth Drew.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finest Book I've Ever Read
Maybe not the absolute best, but what a wonderful book. Hamilton's writing is simple, yet incredibly engrossing, moving, and entertaining. I cannot wait for his upcoming book - everyone should most definately check it outwhen it is released. Thank you. ... Read more
