Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Robert Jordan," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Robert Jordan in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Robert Jordan when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Robert Jordan, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
Very little has been written about the history of Trans-Jordan between 1929-39, a decade of importance in the history of its struggle for independence and sovereignty, its progress and development, its relations with Palestine and the neighbouring Arab countries and the new awakening of Arab nationalism. During the 1930s, although still under the mandate of the League of Nations (which was entrusted to Great Britain) Trans-Jordan began to develop an international presence. The people of Trans-Jordan remained very poor however, and the government was supported by a grant-in-aid from the British Government. The British Resident in Amman Col. Henry Cox used that grant-in-aid as a justification for his financial and political control over the new mandated state, which limited its sovereignty. At the time, Great Britain had the largest empire on earth. Her wealth and power, as well as the survival of her Empire, depended mainly on her ability to defend her trade routes with her overseas colonies, protectorates and mandated territories. The Amir Abdullah Ibn al Husain wanted to take Trans-Jordan back from that Great Britain of the 1930s and develop it into an independent state. This book describes the second decade of that struggle. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The Development of Trans-Jordan, 1929-1939
Because the archives of many Arab countries are either sealed or highly restricted, writings by Arab government officials are often of value. Not so, however, this study of Jordan's early development.

Abu Nowar began his career in the Arab Legion, rose to become a major-general, and then served as the Hashemite Kingdom's ambassador to London and briefly as its deputy prime minister. His flawed earlier works focused on the Jordanian role in Israel's war of independence and Jordan's own efforts to free itself from British tutelage.[1] His latest work is based on an Oxford University doctoral thesis and argues that Trans-Jordan was a distinct geographic entity (rather than an arbitrary creation of European diplomats) and that "Zionist and pro-Zionist British officials keenly endeavoured to remove him [King Abdullah I] from the country and annex it to Palestine."

The latter assertion reflects poorly not only on Abu Nowar's scholarship, but also on that of his Oxford tutors. Throughout his book, "Zionist and pro-Zionist British officials" are employed as useful straw men or foils against whom Abu Nowar can demonstrate Abdullah's independence and acumen. The problem is that Abu Nowar seldom names these bogeymen, and when he does, his labeling is inaccurate: Harry St. John Philby, for example, was a committed Arabist who subsequently became an advisor to the founder of Saudi Arabia. The founders of the State of Israel would be shocked to learn that he stood in their camp.

Nor would the masters whom Abu Nowar once served necessarily agree with his revisionism: Jordanian leaders tended to take a far more pragmatic approach to Zionism, especially given the challenges they faced from within the Arab world. His treatment of the 1936-39 Arab Revolt makes little attempt at academic objectivity: He neither mentions Arab massacres of Jews nor the incitement campaign of Muhammad Amin al-Husayni, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, whose strategy included outreach to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

The Development of Trans-Jordan disappoints in other ways. Analysis of Arab Legion activity is drawn exclusively from British documents rather than Jordanian sources. Discussion of political meetings within Jordanian society is slightly more useful, as Abu Nowar incorporates contemporaneous Arabic newspaper accounts not readily available elsewhere.

Overall, Abu Nowar's doctoral dissertation adds little to an understanding of Jordan's birth pangs and consolidation as a political entity--but it does demonstrate how far scholarship at Oxford University has declined.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent study
This excellent and thorough study shows a great understanding for the country and the use of many statistics and facts to give a fair and interesting examination of the development of Jordan in its formative period.Every aspect of the country is explained from the governments security policies in dealing with bedouin raiders to land policy, agriculture, economy and the military.

Its purpose is to make this evidence accessible to students who are not specialists in the classical languages or classical archaeology. 5-0 out of 5 stars Grasps the True Spirit of the Phillies
Since the age of six I have loved the Phillies.Of my first memories are the 1972 Phillies.A team that managed 59 wins with Superstar Pitcher Steve Carlton (he won 27).For the last 23 years I have suffered along with the Phillies, except for the occassional glory of 1980.But 23 years is a mere drop in the ocean compared to the 100 plus years of suffering.
Jordan captures the trials and tribulations in his well written, well paced book. The Phillies, unlike the St. Louis Browns or football's, Cardinals, do try to win. They just can't pull it off.
This book is not very indepth, but very enjoyable.I can't wait to read what he has done with the Athletics.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best book I have read period.
Having been a huge Phillies fan for over 25 years, I have followed the team through the glory of the 70's and early 80's, through the leans late 80's and 90's. This book has allowed me to go back to my childhood and relived some of the greatest moments.

The book starts off from the4 very beginnings in 1876 through the 2000 season and the travel is a great time, as I was able to read through the entire text in just under 2 hours.

From the early days with Ed Delhanty, Billy Hamilton, Sam Thompson, Duffy Cooley and Elmer Flick to the 50's Whiz Kids with Robin Roberts, Jim Bunning and Richie Ashburn all the to the great teams of the 70's and 80's with Schmidt, Carlton and even today with players like Schilling, Rolen, Hollins and Daulton there is a story for everyone.

Read about the bad trades, the mangers, the end of season collapses and heartbreaks to the World Series win in 1980 and the losses in 1983 and the dramatic loss in 1993. The book was a delight to read and a great addition to my personal library.

If you love the Phillies as much as I do or if you are a baseball history nut than this is book is certainly one to look at. Overall one of the best baseball books I have ever read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yo!Way to Write, Jordan.
If the Chicago Cubs motto is "Wait 'Til Next Year," the Philadelphia Phillies' could be "Remember Yesteryear."And as witnessed by his title, David M. Jordan delivers Phils' history high and tight.
Every Philadelphian and every baseball fan from the original eight National League cities will find cause for smiles and tears in this book.Robin Roberts, Richie Ashburn and other heroes from beloved baseball cards thrown out by Mom come to life. The agony of collapse in 1964 -- it could've been the Phils instead of the Cardinals that signaled the end of the Yankee dynasty. The lone World Championship [before the book's publication] in 1980 with Lefty Carlton (take that, St. Louis!) and Mike Schmidt. And the thrilling, still unbelievable pennant in '93 with perhaps the greatest cast of characters ever on a team:Dykstra and Kruk, Shilling and Daulton and the original Wild Thing, Mitch Williams.
Like the great Phils players, Jordan gives 110%.If you care about baseball -- and Phillies fans care more than just about anyone -- buy this book. ... Read more

Product Description

At the beginning of the 20th Century Jordan, like much of the Middle East, was a loose collection of tribes. By the time of its independence in 1946 it had the most firmly embedded state structures in the Arab world.  Drawing on previously untapped sources, Yoav Alon examines how the disparate clan networks of Jordan were integrated into the Hashemite monarchy, with the help of the British colonial administrators. Looking at the growth of key state institutions from a grassroots perspective, Alon shows how they co-opted the structures of tribal society, and produced a distinctive hybrid between modern statehood and tribal confederacy which still characterizes Jordan to this day. Alon’s innovative approach to the origins of modern Jordan provides fresh insights not only into Jordan itself but into colonialism, modernity and the development of the state in the Middle East.

4-0 out of 5 stars First Book-Length Review of 'Michael Collins'
In this book, the author examines Neil Jordan's 1996 film 'Michael Collins'- how it was crafted by Jordan, and how it affected and reflected Irish and foreign attitudes about Ireland. All chapters are good, but I found the author's analysis of the film itself (cinematography, dialog, actors' reputations, etc.) and its critics to be especially insightful. Bibliography also includes a wealth of information. ... Read more
