5-0 out of 5 stars I love This Journal!!
I love this journal.I bought it a few months ago & use it every day.I love the quotes they have to help you remember all of the things you should be grateful for, even when you don't think there is any. When I opened the book and saw the swirly design, I said to my daughter that it was going to be my next tattoo, and it was.I showed the design to my best friend and she suggested we both get one to remind us of how grateful we our for our friendsip, so we did, just this past weekend.I have no doubt it will bring to mind all the things I have and should be grateful for. I am buying a journal for my best friend and for our tattooist!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
I purchased this as a gift for friends, and purchased one for me also.I LOVE this simple little book that has space to write a paragraph for each day of the year.I end my day by writing what I'm grateful for, and it definitely has the ability to move you from your head into your heart.Even if you have to fake it, it changes how you feel when you state what you are grateful for.Love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Way to show your Gratitude
This little book is a great gift for those you love or for yourself. The quotes and inspirations help to create a mental attitude that will make you appreciate all you have."There are no mistakes, no coincidences. All events are blessings given to us to learn from" Elisabeth Kubler-Rose

This book is a blessing ...and a journal of your gratitude for the entire year!

3-0 out of 5 stars Any lined diary book would work
This has a nice cover and some wonderful quotes, but the book is simply a plain jane "diary" with a few lines each day.For a really "in depth" way to record your "gratudes", try "Inspirations: A Gratitude Journal" (ISBN1582096902).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for grads, dads, friends, family - big uplift!
Gratitude: A Daily Journal was an idea who's time had come.I was looking for a birthday gift for a friend who essentially had everything, especially her life! She had overcome so much and I didn't simply want to give her yet another sweater or gift card; instead, I wanted to give her inspiration. The gratitude journal was the perfect fit!The journal speaks to the heart and affords each reader the opportunity to show gratefulness for all things. What a wonderful gift - the gift of thanks!I purchased 5 more journals since the first purchase! ... WOW.If I was to write a one-word review, that would be it. What a fantastic book--so much more than I was even hoping for.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book of thoughts and ideas
This is the perfect book for my thoughts and ideas. The product is well made and designed, it is hard cover and the illustrations are both uplifting and calming. The pages that you write on are clean and crisp and each new page has a thoughtful and thought provoking idea printed at the top. You can also date your entries in an uncluttered manner. My words will be kept for many years to come and I will pass this book of my wisdom to my children. Great buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Tool for Affirming Yourself
Each page of this book contains an affirmation, along with space to write a few lines, and record the day, date and time of your entry. You can either use the space to write your thoughts on the affirmation itself, oruse it to jot a few lines about anything on your mind.

The affirmationsthemselves are inspiring and thought-provoking. Physically, the book issmall enough to fit easily into a large purse or knapsack, and its hardcover is beautifully decorated. The spiral binding also makes it easy towrite in for lefties. The only drawback that I can see is that the spaceallowed for filling in the day, date and time is a bit small for those ofus with larger handwriting.

If you're working with affirmations andself-esteem issues, this is a great tool. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but much like her other one
I was excited for this book as a companion to Diehn's other book, "The Decorated Page."I was disappointed though because the information was much the same. There was not enough new information to make it worth buying this second book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and artistic
Even if I never make my own journal, I love looking at this book! It takes you through the whole process or suggests how you can transform an already existing book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Only Writing for Publication Video of its' Kind
A step-by-step and motivating presentation on the business of getting magazine articles published. Jim Detjen, award winning environmental writer and Csaba Csere, Car and Driver Magazine editor, do a superb jobcontributing their expertise on the subjects of interviewing, critiquing, and querying.

I have been published many times. However, I found ErikBean's Writing for Publication Video to be an excellent refresher.Onlineaccess provided with the video yields a variety of tools that have helpedme research, write, and market my materials proficiently.

What's more, this video is a must for any writing or journalism classroom.Studentswill thank their instructor for allowing them to see it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Clear and Concise Road to Publication!
Loved it!A simple, clear and concise road to publication.Best of all, unlike traditional static books that can become out-dated, this one provides new information via The Online Magazine Article Writing Workshopweb site.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than another over-bloated book about feature writing.
I was leery after my first read through this short book. However, when I applied the techniques discussed and viewed the additional updated online material inside the website, I found the support I needed to come up withmy first salable article to a regional (Kansas City) sports rag, PlaygroundMagazine.I also was able to locate a local writing group that eventuallyhelped critique my work.It was refreshing to find a resource (book andwebsite) bent on the business of getting published.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book not worthwhile as stand-alone text
I bought this book last week here on Amazon after reading the other glowing reviews.I must warn other potential purchasers that as a stand-alone text, this book is incomplete.Perhaps in the accompanyingvideo more details and examples are offered, but I'm skeptical. The booksimply records the 1997 speeches given at a Community Education andRecreation presentation at Huron High School, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Thebook offers one sample query letter by the author and another (withrevision) by a different writer. The author's own examples of reminder andwithdrawal letters (pp. 65, 67) both contain serious grammatical errors["On February 15, I had submitting the article..."]. "I hadsubmitted," perhaps? The bottom line? This book contains 6 pagesof semi-useful information and 80 pages of fluff.Do we really want toread four sample jokes that we can use to loosen up our subjects beforephotographing them?Or that lithium batteries last a long time?I reallydidn't buy this book to learn that auto-rewind and auto-load cameras areconvenient.

I found no information in this book that was not also easilyfound by surfing the net, reading sites from publishers or J-Schools atmany US institutions. It's a slick, but shallow, video-book-workshoppackage from the former marketing professional. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding example of excellent teaching!
As a classroom teacher I find this book to be one of the best in our profession. It doesn't tell us it shows us!The most outstanding feature of this book is that the authors love to write and they inspire theirstudents in their classrooms and the readers of this book to write.Theyknow how to get the words flowing from beginners.I just finished readinga book that was written on how to teach struggling writers by a professorof writing and he did not teach me how to teach writing or motivate me likethis book, Moon Journals did.I recommend this book to all teachers ofwriting, art, and science.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Loved It!
Joni Chancer and Gina Rester-Zodrow paint a clear and exciting picture of what an inquiry based nature study can do to engage children in the classroom. I couldn't stop reading this book! It is practical with over 50mini-lessons and lots of classroom snapshots that give teachers a firmfoundation on which to begin. Chancer also offers good advice and theoryexplaining why art and writing are such a good match.I personally will beless controlling in my classroom- I was amazed at the results she got fromher children when she gave them time to explore and experiment. As a 3rdgrade teacher, this book will really change the way I do some things in myclassroom. Thanks, Joni and Gina!

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down
"How to" books are not usually in the "couldn't put it down category" but this one was.I have purchased 2 of Gwen Diehn's other books and loved them just as much as this one.I really like the technique Diehn used taking individual people through the process of designing journals for their own journal projects, using the process in her book to decide which type of journal, binding and cover would work best for them.It really brought this process alive for me. The evaluation of how well their journal worked for them and looking at what they would do different next time was so helpful.Diehn brought up lots of options and possible solutions that I wouldn't have thought given my level of experience with journal making.I loved the journal photos and found the instructions to be very clear. You do not have to go out and buy a lot of specialized supplies for these journals and I appreciate that. This is an excellent book.I read it cover to cover in two days and am so excited to start work on a new journal tomorrow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous inspiration-great "kick start"
I love doing art journaling...this has so much to offer..both inspiration that comes from the author and the guest artists...as well as so many examples of how to construct the actual journal. I love her work...as I have her other book...but this one is even better...as there are so many examples of great journals...those artists I have taken workshops from and many of the same that I admire their work. It is a feast for the eyes. Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gwen has done it again!
This is a fantastic book and I highly recommend it! I have been a bookmaker for 6 years; Gwen's instructions are clear and the booklet that helps you decide which journal is best for you is invaluable!

5-0 out of 5 stars Designing & Creating Your Unique Journal
If you're a journal-keeper--and especially if you're artistically inclined--you'll want to take a look at Gwen Diehn's latest book, Real Life Journals: Designing & Using Handmade Books.

A unique marriage of the art of handcrafted books and the art of journaling, Real Life Journals offers a step-by-step program that will give you what Diehn calls a "design inventory" for the journal you want. It will help you decide what kind of journal fits your style, create a design and choose the materials for your book, and craft the journal.

To illustrate the process, Diehn invited nine people to choose the kind of journal they wanted and work with her design inventory. Using their responses, she created a journal for each of them (one was a father-daughter pair, another a grandmother wanting to journal for her family). She documented all nine journals--and the journaling experience each embraced, each one different and each unique to the journal-keeper's intentions and dreams. You'll be inspired by these experiences to make your own inventory, design your own book, and begin your own journal.

Throughout, Real Life Journals is richly illustrated, with careful descriptions of each part of the process, from bookbinding techniques, materials, and tools, to ideas for creating covers. I'm no bookmaker, but reading the instructions and studying the illustrations, I'm confident that I could attempt even the more complicated of the bindery processes Diehn describes. The text and illustrations are supplemented by a mini-book tucked inside the front cover that helps you "choose your own bookbinding adventure" and a foldout chart illustrating binding essentials inside the back cover.

Diehn's gentle encouragement through the book will make you want to create a journal for yourself--and use it. I've been journaling on my computer for decades and enjoy the fluency and ease of recording my thoughts as fast as my fingers can fly. But Diehn's work is an inspiration, because it acknowledges that our lives are kaleidoscopic, made up of many vibrant images and colorful ideas--something that's a little hard to capture in black and white and 12 point Times New Roman. Real Life Journals recognizes that form and function come together in the truest kind of art, and that the book we create to write in will help to shape the visions we record.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Journaling book for all levels!
I have other books by this author and when I found she was coming out with another book on Journaling, I was eager to get it.I was not dissapointed at all with the instructions where you can "interact" with creating your journal specific to your needs and wants.I journal quite a bit and have ventured out to make my own with a variety of pages to use with different mediums such as watercolor.I am however not a book maker and was not really interested in learning at this time complicated ways to make a art journal. What I do like about this book is that you can start out with very simple book making techniques making the journal the way you want.I like that.Looking at the other bookmaking techniques and the very clear instructions given that I will be trying out some of the other ways to make journals such as using a existing book cover with maybe a coptic stitch. It is like having a bunch of bookmaking classes wrapped up in this one book.I did enjoy the stories of folks in the book that shared there stories of what they journal and what kind of journal works for them.I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in journaling and bookmaking!!! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money
How else can I say it? This was a very poor book. To call it a "book" is being generous as it's really the size of a large brochure with A LOT of white space. There are many ideas that are so basic as to be insulting even to beginning journalers. When she tries to venture out - she's (in my opinion) wrong on a lot of things. For example, she seems big on rules for keeping a diary/journal, (writing at the same place every time you write, write at the same time each day, list events, do this and try not to do that). She even names what she calls the three PURPOSES of a journal. (There's only three?) She says the number one purpose in keeping a journal is to pass it along as a legacy for future family readers. You mean, it's not about expressing yourself on paper - for better or worse - but about keeping a record for future generations? To her, the legacy aspect is the #1 purpose in keeping a journal. Huh?

This is a "creative journal?" Most would agree a "creative journal," would have few, if any, rules and would have future readers far from the mind. Most would probably also think of a "creative journal," as being a constant companion; not something where you write a listing of events at the same time and in the same place each day. One other quick note: the book's "bibliography" lists nothing more than articles from magazines like American Heritage, Cosmopolitan, etc. Not a single book about historical journals, a single book about creative journals; in fact, I meant that literally - not a single book is listed - only magazine articles! I could go on with more examples, but I hope you get the idea. There are FAR better books for even the most virgin of diarists/journalers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Generalizations and Common Sense
are about all that this book has to offer.I found that it was full of suggestions like 'get a really nice pen to write your journal with.'I was hoping to learn more about the actual mechanics of writing a journal entry.Other books I have read recently suggest starting simple with a record of the daily weather, or a record of the people you met during the day. Then you slowly start increasing the details that you write on a daily basis. In contrast to this type of concrete suggestion, "Dear Diary" offers far too many generalizations to be truly helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful and inspriational book.
I found this book to be just the thing I needed to get started writing the journal I always wanted to keep. The author has shown menot only the how and why of journal keeping, but the many benefits to be derived fromjournals. In the first week, I began seeing some of the benefits in my ownlife. I recommend this book to all!!!!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars inspirational
An unusual book design:this comes in a slipcover with an identical blank book (that I discarded because of its aggressive "lines" to control where one wrote).

This book introduces a wide, shallow array of topics relating to journals. The most fun passages deal with all the different potential purposes of journals:record of daily events, repository of creative ideas, sketchbook, travel journal, crisis journal, gratitude journal, journal specific to your hobby, et cetera.

Also good are several of the suggested exercises:list-making, writing unsent letters, writing dialogs with between you and your body or you and someone in your life, writing about yourself in third-person, filling in sensory details of memories, attempting poetry, et cetera.

The author provides some excerpts from famous journals but keeps it short and interesting. This book isn't as deep or as personal as Leaving A Trace by Alexandra Johnson, but it's way better than Sheila Bender's Keeping A Journal You Love.If I could only keep one book on journaling, it would be Leaving A Trace, but the Jacobs is a decent companion to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Find the Way In by Writing Your Own Journal
William Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet, "To Thine Own Self Be True."But how does one remain true to Shakespeare's maxim within our modern times when the self seems as difficult to reach as the life forms at the bottom of the ocean.Thankfully, Rita D. Jacobs' delightful, concise book, The Way In, provides the necessary oxygen for our deep journey to the bottomless pit of our self.

Part three, the essence of the book, enables the reader to plunge the self through journal writing.Jacob gives simple yet effective advice, such as writing about one's self in the third person. Part one consists of journal excerpts and their different purposes. Anne Frank, hiding from the Nazis, uses the journal as a confidante. Part two represents the myriad of journals one can keep: travel, transition, crisis, love and the increasingly popular divorce chronicle.

The author's spirited writing will spark the journal writer within to seek the buried, dusty treaures lurking in the vast unmined soul. Jacob concludes, "There is an unending self within you to be fathomed, explored and revisited time and again in your journal."The Way In offers helpful common sense tidbits for your journal, whether it be confessional, travel or self-exploratory; I imagine good ol' Bill kept some kind of journal, and hey, look how well it worked out for him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Self-Discovery
"The urge to write can come from anywhere-the desire to have a serious conversation with yourself, the need to sort out what seems like an overwhelming number of tasks, the urge to capture the past or pin down a current insight, the impulse to record an event or perceptions of an event, or simply the desire to create a record of life's journey." ~Rita D. Jacobs

There are two books in one beautiful keepsake box. The color of the box is reminiscent of burgundy leather and there are beautiful gold, pink, yellow and blue flowers on the top, sides and around the title on the front. These are high-quality books with beautiful long-lasting bindings, wonderful smooth warm covers and crisp pages. The type of books you dream about. The journal also has a gold thread bookmark to add a touch of elegance.

You will receive:

1. A Journal - a beautiful hardcover book with lined pages. Each page has a scroll design at the top. This book is for people with very small handwriting.

2. "The Way In: Journal Writing for Self-Discovery"by Rita D. Jacobs

This is a high-quality journal set. When I first found this item, I thought it was just two blank journal books. What a wonderful surprise to find there was an actual book by Rita D. Jacobs.

"The Way In" is divided into three sections:

PART ONE: The Journal-writing Tradition

If you love reading journals, there are a few treats in this book. You can ready an entry from Ralph Waldo Emerson's journal dated April 12-15, 1836. There are lists of prolific diarists like Anais Nin. Rita also shows how F. Scott Fitzgerald collected random observations in a series of notebooks and these were organized alphabetically. So, she explains how your diary/journal can be as unique as you want it to be.

I loved the ideas of creating journals for fictional characters: "as a way of letting the reader understand more fully the motivations and internal landscapes of the characters." There is also the famous quote from Gwendolyn in The Importance of Being Earnest, where she talks about her diary being a sensational read.

PART TWO: Keeping Your Own Journal

This section is especially for your own writing experience. I was especially interested in the difference between a journal and a memoir. The author shows how you have to create a "creature of remarkable depth" to capture an audiences attention. She also explains how writing on a computer is another option, but I think it is sometimes more fun to write in a real book. If you do have a lot to say, the computer might be a better option. I can say, I've never written a poem on a computer, so I have to agree with the author when she says that we can reach our uncensored depths by using free-flowing journal writing. Writing on real paper can also be rather therapeutic. You might want to keep a dream journal or a scrapbook journal. I like the idea of a scrapbook journal because often people say things to you that you want to remember and you can make up a journal of "others" thoughts.

PART THREE: Writing to Find the Way In

Freewriting is rather fun and the author shows how this is the most effective way to get in touch with your deepest self. This type of writing can suddenly appear and you have to scramble for a piece of paper. The author gives suggestions about how you can make this type of writing more of a focus.

The section on making lists for accomplishing tasks was all too familiar.

There is a section on page 106 which struck me as rather profound. It is a list of 52 topics on which you can reflect. Imagine writing about "the people you miss and why," "things I'll never do again" or "dreams that I have." There is also a list of memories. Imagine creating an entire book filled with your childhood memories or memories of love or memories of scents and cooking.

Rita Jacobs covers a variety of topics including: Journals as Fiction, the Journal in times of Crisis, Journal or Diary, The Difference between a Journal and a Memoir, Beginning the Process, Kinds of Journals, Freewriting, Waking Dreams, Gossiping with Your Journal, Making Lists, Encounters With the Self, Elaborating Memories, Changing Your Point of View, Using Drawings in Journals, Encounters with the Creative Imagination and Mining Your Journals for Memoir Material.

This book will interest anyone who has ever wanted to start a journal or anyone who wants to add an added dose of creativity to their writing. If you love collecting quotes, there are quite a few collectables!

Rita D. Jacobs, Ph.D., is a college professor and journalist. She conducts workshops and classes on journal writing and has a beautiful writing style. She has written an essential book for anyone interested in starting a journal. There is also a handy index so you can find specific topics. This is especially helpful after you start writing your journal.

"The Way In" is a set of books that jumps off the shelf and wants to go home with you. Rita Jacobs' book is a wonderful cozy read.

It is great,do not smell like other leather and yes it's real leather very neat

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and timeless!
I ordered this item off Rogue Journals main website. I had been looking through their site the past few months to find a journal for my boyfriends birthday. This one just so happened to go on sale when I went to order, with free personalization! Their products are a little pricey but now that I have the journal in my possession, every $1 you spend is worth it.

Just the smell of leather after opening was enough for me to know it is genuine. The personal embossing is beautiful! I chose the natural parchment paper as an added heritage/heirloom look and I just love the way it presents in the pages; acid free ( preserves longer)and made from the bark of a Mulberry. (no trees are destroyed in the making of this paper)

This journal would make a beautiful gift to anyone. I can't wait to see his reaction! Now all I need is a really great writing utensil to compliment the journal.

Great price, excellent quality and received it via regular mail before promised.

Good size. My only complaint would be how the pages were bound in multiple sections instead of one. It makes the journal look a little odd.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Write for Life" Healing Body, Mind, and Spirit Through Journal Writing
I'm finding this book is helping me to "open up" my emotions. As the book describes so eloquently by its author, Sheppard K., it is much different from telling your thoughts and feelings to another person such as a friend or a therapist. He takes you through the steps to journal writing and helps one break down the "barriers" that so often prevented me from putting my thoughts on paper. Anyone could follow his gentle instructions and start on a new journey in life. You'll be surprised!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
This book is easy to read, understand and follow. I have read many books on writing and journaling and this one got me started and is keeping me going.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Right Stuff for Life
If you had to pick a perfect doctor, Sheppard Kominars would come close to filling the bill:warm, compassionate, caring and knowledgeable.Happily, Write for Life gives you unlimited access to just that kind of doctor.Dr. Kominars, a/k/a "the journal doctor," has been through some of the roughest waters on the river of life, and he has not only survived but come up smiling.I know, as I've met the man. He's an inspiration and he's happy to share all his healing insights.

Start reading his book and it's as if you're sitting in front of a fireplace with him, having a chat. There's no presumption or esoteric theories, just good, grounded wisdom, given straight from the heart.I especially liked the practicality of Dr. Kominars' advice. From finding a good journal and pen to overcoming writer's block and figuring out what to write about, he knows just where you're apt to get stuck and provides exactly the suggestions and encouragement needed to get going and keep going.

Finally, as a kitchen coach and healthy eating guide, I was delighted to see an entire chapter on journaling about food and nutrition.I had never considered how journaling can help us take ever greater delight and comfort from this area of our lives. As the last 15 chapters reveal, however, journaling can heal and improve a whole lot of areas within our lives.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bland, Cliche-Ridden, PC-Dominated, New Age Garbage
I read this book cover-to-cover without doing any of the exercises or practices.I wasn't moved to.There wasn't anything inspiring in what or how the author wrote or what he suggested, and I've been keeping a journal for the last 39 years.

More than half this book is loaded down with self-help self-improvement workbook projects!Whew!Talk about a journal that's a companion with you through life's journey!Do you want your companion to be constantly hammering:"C'mon, honey!Make a list.C'mon, honey, focus on this expectation today.C'mon, honey, write down a joyful memory.C'mon, honey, paint a pretty picture.C'mon, honey, meditate."If you're married to a harridan already, maybe you're used to it and take this sort of nagging and commanding for granted."C'mon, honey, take the garbage out, but don't judge yourself.Stay open! That's a dear!"

The other half -- qualitatively, not quantitatively, is insufferably loaded with woo-woo spirituality intermingled with traditional religious Christian ideas.Embrace Ayurveda foods!Don't you just love AA meetings?Remember your Higher Power.Hug a tree for the Native American Indian spirit!Zen meditate and then pray like a Christian!Don't forget your Yoga! With all of the "best" religious or spiritual practices in the world mentioned here, why on earth would one need to keep a journal at all?The author doesn't offer a clue.Isn't God or Nirvana or Enlightenment enough? Why isn't God enough?

This book is supposed to be about your life, exploring your whole life, yet, interestingly, there's not one mention of sex, not one (and no mention of a body part)! There's your New Age PC spirituality for you!

The book contains lots of black-and-white illustrations, mostly of old women.Do you catch who the author's trying to reach? And he has a whole chapter devoted to one's Legacy to others.Hmm.....rich, old ladies who want to leave a legacy . . . .Hmmm....

The author is from San Francisco and, sadly, the stereotype shows.

Insofar as originality of expression is concerned, or the enjoyment of a provocative or entertaining writing style, here's some typical samples from the book:

"I feel like a child standing at the window of a candy store looking in."

"Walk in a garden at sunrise or watch the sunset from the beach, paint a pretty picture or write a poem, play with a puppy or embrace a dear friend."

Pretty stirring stuff, eh?Kind of grabs you, no?Bland isn't my favorite flavor either.

This book was so totally, gut-wrenchingingly void of authenticity that, by book's end, it immediately stopped my flow for keeping a daily journal. It gave me a kind of self-talk constipation from the excessive, one-size-fits-all spiritual mullarky that gushed up between its covers. The cure for my constipation? The need to forget all and every "idea" that was in this book.At least the paper can be recycled.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable relevance for aspiring writers

Product Description
Assigned by writing teachers, recommended by therapists, journals are vehicles for reflection, resolution, and awakening. This book will help clear the obstacles that keep so many would-be journal writers from committing their thoughts to paper.Amazon.com Review
Despite its subtitle, Notes from Myself is less a guide to creative journal writing than a history of and fervent position paper in favor of it. Anne Hazard Aldrich, a long-time journal keeper, writes about journals by artists, scientists, travelers, and novelists, and examines period journals, spiritual journals, journals of illness, and prison journals. The final section includes annotated excerpts from a year in the life of her own journal. Aldrich is very convincing in her argument for journal writing, which she says is therapeutic, liberating, "both a road towards the creative self, and an act of creativity in itself." Aldrich believes that "there is never a day in your life which is not worthy of description," and that "knowing we are going to write makes us more observant." Notes from Myself will surely gear you up to start writing, but you may also findits repetition and niggling grammatical errors somewhat tiresome. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A tremendous disappointment
As a fan of personal writing who collects published and unpublished diaries as well as books about keeping a journal, I pick up everything onthe subject I can find. This is one of the few purchases I regret havingmade. Notes from Myself lurches from ponderous, excessively formal prose toincongruously informal comments, never quite managing to settle into anengaging, accessible style. Aldrich spends a good deal of time describingthe journals of famous people, from Pepys to Woolf, but rarely quotes them.Even more irritating, the book is littered with grammatical errors andtypos, and in one place Aldrich recommends a book but misspells theauthor's name! The ideas in this book may be worthy, but the poor writingand careless presentation were so distracting that I couldn't manage tofinish it. I won't be keeping this book for my collection. Anyoneinterested in exploring the possibilities of journal-writing would be muchbetter off with Tristine Rainer's classic The New Diary.

Over 1,000 journal pages presented in one beautiful full-color book

Journals offer their makers a safe place to dream, doodle, rant, and reinvent themselves. They offer viewers rich, visual inspiration. There is a fascination with these revealing and often beautiful pages of self-exploration and personal expression. Journals offer a tantalizing, voyeuristic view of an interior life.

This would be the first book to offer examples of over 1000 journal pages in one eye-catching, visual format, and would attract a wide swathe of artists who fully embrace or experiment with this medium.

Journaling has seeped into popular culture in a big way and this collection provides a wide array of ideas, techniques and themes to inspire and inform mixed media and journaling enthusiasts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thoughtful Collection of Art Journal Pages
A lovely collection of thoughtfully selected art journal pages. Grab a cup of tea and sit in a comfy spot as you page through this beautifully designed book, with pages to admire, to enjoy, to spark your creativity. As an art journalist, I also like this as a coffee table book to skim or as a conversation starter.

2-0 out of 5 stars tiny treasures
While this book is nice, the images are so small I would not have bought it in a store had I seen it.Fewer images would have allowed for bigger images. It is as if the number of images was the mission irregardless of quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!I Love It!
I love this book and look at it often.I keep art journals and use this for inspiration.Yeah, some of the pictures are on the small side and there's no text, but that's just the way the book was put together. It's great if you love art journals.I hope the author creates more books on art journals.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem of a book
I have been getting into art journaling myself in the last year and have scoured the internet for inspiration, and found a lot of artists recommending this book.. I didnt know until i received it today in the mail what to expect. It is beautiful - there are so many talented people out there doing what they love and I think its great they are willing to share their work with us - even their journal pages. There is a great range of different ideas and styles to be found... i read someones review complaining that the pictures weren't big enough, i didnt mind the size - at two pictures per page - you can see enough detail and vivid color and still appreciate the whole picture. This book inspired me and that is just the initial thumbing through it. I intend to study it closer asap. It is a great value and a great book!

Worth the price but for me a bit odd as regards the art.I thought it would be 1,000 artists (a big job) but it was several from each artist instead. If I saw it at the store I might not have bought it but if you like this type of art, well worth the price. ... Read more
