Product Description
In The Way of the Journal, therapist and author Kathleen Adams, M.A. teaches her trademark approach to using reflective writing as a therapeutic process. Adams' ten-step "quick and easy" method was created to provide sexual abuse survivors and dissociative clients with ways to maximize structure, balance, and permission while minimizing overstimulation and overwhelming feeling. Developed while working with dissociative disorders patients at a national treatment center, The Way of the Journal can be used by all survivors, as well as anyone in pain who wishes to gain greater self-understanding. In a well-designed workbook format, The Way of the Journal teaches 10 fundamental journalkeeping skills that are helpful for those in treatment for a variety of emotional difficulties, and that are of particular benefit to people with dissociative diagnoses. Adams begins the workbook with exercises for short, contained journal entries and proceeds to demonstrate looser, open-ended journal writing techniques. All of these exercises can be completed in less than 30 minutes a day over a two-week period, giving the writer a concrete sense of progress and accomplishment. Each section is followed by "So, how was it?," an evaluation of the specific journal technique used, assisting clients and, if desired, their therapists in identifying which techniques will work best for them in ongoing journal therapy. The Way of the Journal finishes with a "Resources" chapter (including a significant list of other books on journal writing), 10 reasons why journal writing is a powerful aid to therapy, and journal therapy interventions for common clinical situations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for those who enjoy journaling/journal keeping.
It is a very excellent book for all who want to know themselves better and enjoy journaling. I really learned a lot about myself in ways that were completely unexpected. I highly recommend it not just for every day writing but when there is a desire to deal and resolve stressful issues and events.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stratgies For Journaling-So Helpful
I found this book to be so helpful. I am new to Journaling so I get stuck alot. Now I have a lot of different ways to go. I even copied some of the material for later use....

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one THEY don't want you to know about.
You know whom I mean--all those people jumping on the 'journaling' bandwagon. This book is the original and best.Others will pick or choose some of her techniques and exercises (and mmmaaaaaaybe give her credit) but throw in a little Oprah-ism and bam! pull the wool over the eyes of the new journaler. For example, Meyn's shamelessly mercenary _lessons in therapeutic writing_ steals several ideas from this book, and doesn't even bother to change the names--Alphapoems? Come on, my college students try harder when they're plagiarizing....

The reason the new trendies are getting away with it is this (well, two reasons, actually): we always think New means Better ('new and improved!' anyone remember New Coke?).Second, writing works.Seriously.There's almost no way you could commit to writing a journal and not get SOME benefit out of it.If you just sat and freewrote for 20 minutes a day (which Julia Cameron recommends) you'd get major benefits. If you just wrote a portrait or a memory or a dream, you'd benefit. There's NO WAY writing in a journal canNOT improve the quality of your life. Thus even when we read New Age so-and-so's latest retread of the same old stuff, we think so-and-so's a bloody genius, because, well, we wrote and felt better!

So, we really don't *need* new technigues, anything will do.However, we do LIKE new techniques, right? We like things that shake up our dull routine, that scrape up the bottom of the pond a bit. That get us thinking and looking at our lives in new ways. And this book is THE best, pound for pound, dollar for dollar, for that.Shesets it as a course (and I did it as a course and highly recommend it, and I've been journaling for decades!) and after each day's activity, you get a chance to reflect on how that particular experience worked for you.So at the end of the 'course' you not only have concrete tools to use, you have experience with using them, so you can pick and choose which technique you *feel* like doing that day.I made myself a little deck of index cards and wrote one technique per card, so that when I need a boost or something different, I draw a card and go!

If you only get one book on journaling, get this one. It's the original, the best, the easiest to use, and the most useful. Even if you have other journaling books, get this one too, because it's that good, and it's wonderful to have ALL the good ideas in one place!

4-0 out of 5 stars Difficult steps towards inner healing
Adams' book provides effective tools for people who are working through difficult life experiences, which may include the full gamut from childhood sexual abuse to living with AIDS.This workbook is intended to help thetherapist work with the client to access hidden feelings or agendas thatmight otherwise go unnoticed, thereby accelerating the healing process. Many of the ideas employed in the workbook are modifications of IraProgoff's journal writing process.Adams offers several creative ideas tohelp one get started and feel safe as he/she sits before a blank page forthe first time. The journal writing exercises are broken down into tendays with exercises that begin with sentence stems, clustering, alphapoems, character sketches, dialogues and finish with more difficult writingexercises such as free writing and journal dialogue.Adams also offerssuggestions for when to use exercises that would help them jump start thejournaling process and get to the crux of one's feelings when movingthrough difficult issues or life experiences.I have used several of thetechniques and exercises offered, taking the time to access and reflectupon the experience later.I found this approach very useful foruncovering feelings that I was not aware of while writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard work made rewarding.
This workbook offers extensive exercises into the depths of journaling as healing therapy. As the life blood of The Center for Journal Therapy and a national expert as well as trainer in journal work, the author has"been there" and you know it after working with this book. Necessary work whether you are the healer or the healee. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and Inspiring Book
This book is very complete. It includes inspiring quotes, practical how-to approaches to various kinds of journals, and personal stories of individuals who have benefitted from keeping a daily record of their lives and inner thoughts. The book includes areas not covered by most other books on journal writing, including ways to process grief. Interesting illustrations are sprinkled throughout the text. Definitely a worthwhile book! Read it.

2-0 out of 5 stars bloodless and draining
This book should have been better--it's a comprehensive collection of journaling ideas--but the final effect is bloodless and draining.Sadly, the author saves significant journal writing examples for a final section and uses quotes instead of examples in the chapters.Perhaps she's trying not to sway the reader as to a preferred type of writing, but it also doesn't impart much energy or passion.Go back to "The New Diary" or "One to One," or go forward to "Leaving a Trace;" this one isn't worth the effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaker for healing and writing
This book was a turning point for me in my writing.I found it fascinating to hear the stories behind established authors whose painful beginnings were the sources of their writings. It helped me understand the significance of story, my story included, which created a new confidence in writing.I often refer it to people who express a desire to write but who feel no one wants to hear their story. This book was very interesting to read and full of significant information about specific authors/writings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way above and beyond the call
Despite being a writer, it's so hard expressing the extent to which this book has touched my soul. I came to it desperately in need of guidance, already knowing DeSalvo's reputation as a Woolf critic I've greatly admired. I knew her book would be useful. I had no idea it would be life-changing. This is one of the most influential books on my life I've ever read, and it may even be the most influential on me. I've never found any book on this topic to truly cut to the heart of what it is to need to find healing, much less a book with as much practical advice as this one. DeSalvo doesn't spew platitudes and feel good metaphor. She presents empathetic real advice on how to free yourself from the horrors of the past. I hope to meet Louise DeSalvo one day and thank her for this book. It's touched me to the core.

5-0 out of 5 stars At The Top Of My List of Favorites
I have read a great many books on writing, and written a few myself. But Writing as a Way of Healing has gone straight to the top of my list of favorites, and I suspect that it will stay there for a very long time--perhaps for all time. But in the process of reading this book, I discovered I had to read the book that went before it, and now I want to tell you about both.

Louise DeSalvo has been teaching English and creative writing for nearly twenty years. The first in her working-class Italian family to graduate from college, she escaped a soul-deadening home life--a depressed mother, an angry father--by reading, going to the movies, and dating, dating, dating. It wasn't until the late 1980's, when she wrote a scholarly book about the impact of childhood sexual abuse on the life and work of Virginia Woolf that she began to come to terms with her own childhood traumas and the lingering shadows of her mother's death and her sister's suicide. She dealt with her pain, anxiety, and depression in a memoir called Vertigo (now available in paperback, published by Plume), in which she explored her own story. Vertigo isn't a pleasant book, or easy--it's about hidden pain and the depression and despair into which a woman can fall when she attempts to avoid self-knowledge. But it is a necessary book, for through it, DeSalvo learns that the process of life-writing is also the process of healing. What she discovered in Vertigo, and what she subsequently put to use in her own teaching, is the subject and object of Writing As a Way of Healing.

DeSalvo's section and chapter titles, by themselves, are helpful clues to the book's significance. The first section is called "Writing as a Way of Healing," and contains four chapters: Why Write, How Writing Can Help Us Heal, Writing as a Therapeutic Process, and Writing Pain, Writing Loss. Section Two is called "The Process/The Program," and has four chapters: The Healing Power of the Writing Process, Caring for Ourselves as We Write; and Stages of Growth I and II. The third section, "From Woundedness to Wholeness Through Writing" contains two chapters: Writing the Wounded Psyche and Writing the Wounded Body. The Epilogue is called "From Silence to Testimony." Each of the chapters contains suggestions for writing, examples (from such writers as Audre Lorde, Alice Walker, Jamaica Kincaid, Isabel Allende, Djuna Barnes), discussion, and ideas--lots of ideas, so many ideas that you'll find yourself wanting to stop reading and start writing (something that DeSalvo herself, no doubt, would applaud).

DeSalvo refers extensively to a favorite researcher of mine--Dr. James Pennebaker--whose book Opening Up has been an important influence on my own understanding of the healing power of the writing process. When we use writing to explore traumatic or anxiety-provoking events in detail, together with the feelings that arise from those events, the writing process can help us to understand more clearly, cope in a more balanced way, and even feel better physically. Seen from this point of view, life-writing becomes a lifetime project, as we unravel the meanings of events and explore our responses to them. When we commit ourselves to this very important lifelong project--recognizing that we don't write our story once and for all and forget it!--we commit ourselves to a lifetime of learning, growing and healing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Inspirational
Although the book was not quite what I was expecting, i.e. a book that teaches you how to journal, I found it exceptional nonetheless. It was inspirational as it shared stories of other writers who write to save their sanity and souls. It also offered useful techniques to get you thinking about your memories and how to record them.

I highly recommend this very readable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Validation Personified
My daughter Debbi gave me this book for my birthday. I read Ms. DeSalvo's book when I was in the final stages of confronting the tragic suicide of my father that happened two days before my high school Senior Prom. For nearly fifty years after the day my entrepreneur father put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger his death gnawed at me. By facing what happened to me on that dreary spring day in Boston and trying to make sense of my Pop's state of mind on the day he died I was able to dig down deep into my soul and describe how I felt. I opened up my heart and was able to face a time only years had kept at bay. By writing about my heretofore-suppressed feelings I began to sob over the keyboard and took my first steps to understand why my father died. Desalvo's book validated my earlier conclusion that writing is truly a way of healing. ... Read more

Praxis 7, "Untitled Number Seven" features recent projects that reconceptualize the space and discourse of the museum. The journal posits an expanded definition of curation as not only an organizational device for choosing and arranging works of art, but more broadly as a device for structuring a relationship between building and the works of art it houses. This issue focuses on projects that challenge the very definition of the museum as a static determinant structure, and instead situate the contemporary museum more broadly as a cultural institution. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous ideas; great for kids who have "nothing to write about."
I loved using this book with Middle Schoolers! So many great topic ideas, and many of them were topics that pertained to subjects being discussed and studied in their other classes.
These are also wonderful for "sparking" some great classroom discussions. Here are a couple great examples:

An epitaph is a sometimes humorous saying or poem engraved on a headstone.(Example given.)What epitaph would you want on your headstone?Would it be funny?Sweet?Serious? Why?Write a draft.

Dr. M. L. Kingwas a pacifist and believed that hatred and prejudice could be fought with love.Do you agree with him?Do you think that in all situations a peaceful response in the correct one? Why?Support your statements!(Quote from MLK given.)

Where do you see yourself five years from now? What are you doing?Where are you living?School?Activities?Job?

These are just a few of the great examples. Many of these could be taken and adapted for younger kids, or older kids, too. ... Read more

By the best-selling author of Writing on Both Sides of the Brain, an inspirational guide to releasing past and present emotional pains through therapeutic writing.

In moments of grief or loss, we often turn to the written word to say what cannot be said aloud. But fears about writing honestly and self-criticism can stand in the way of making use of this powerful therapeutic tool. With Pen in Hand is an inspirational and practical guide to breaking through these roadblocks and to helping one "write to heal." Outlining writing techniques that are best for working through pain and for privately collecting raw emotions--"Writing a Letter of Goodbye," "Interviewing Your Body," "Rapid-Writing," and more--Henriette Klauser shares stories and tips that will help readers gain comfort from what they commit to paper. 4-0 out of 5 stars Cheaper Than a Psychiatrist
I pulled this book from the library with a number of others and almost returned it unread.I'm glad that I didn't do that, however, because I've gotten so much out of it.I have used this type of journal writing for a number of years and can testify to its healing powers.I am always amazed at how quickly peace can come or how solutions can appear just by moving the pen across the page.In spite of the fact that I have been practicing what this book is "preaching", I was still able to glean some practical tips and inspiration to continue using this in my daily life even when I'm not faced with some earth-shattering crisis.I'd highly recommend this. It's cheaper than a psychiatrist and safer than drugs and all you have to do is pick up a pen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Healing through writing is exceptional
These books, including my own, 'Second Chance Ranch', and Joan Didion's 'The Year of Magical Thinking,' will become more widely read as babyboomers age and begin to come to terms with loss(es).Ms. Klauser is a wonderful writer, and this is a wonderful book.

This spiral-bound journal, conceived by Sarah Ban Breathnach,is designed to encourage writers to explore their life stories andunleash dormant creativity. Every two-page spread is exquisitelybordered by a wood print leaf pattern and includes a sage little quoteto set the mood or beckon the muse (such as "People who keep journalshave life twice." --JessamynWest). The large format (11.25 by 9.75 inches) gives writersplenty of room to scrawl down their thoughts and even offers amplespace for adding personal artwork or gluing in cut-out images. Severalpocket folders are bound into the back for carrying clippings, postcards, or dry leaves--whatever whimsy dictates. Because it isspiral bound (with a sturdy wrap-around cover), writers can lay thebook flat while at work--a major convenience.

Interspersedthroughout the journal, Ban Breathnach has added suggestions forwriting exercises and collages, plus discussions of themes such as"Success," "Mystery," or "Return to Self." In one spread, NatalieGoldberg is quoted as saying, "Your first job is to get your ownstory straight." There's no doubt that writers can do just that withthis literary example of functional art. --Gail Hudson ... Read more

A gift for a friend. In good condition and I received it in a reasonable time.

4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful!
I have learned so much with this and I thank sarah for doing such an awesome job

4-0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable
There isn't too much writing in this book actually. It revolves mostly around making series of collages from amgazine clippings, etc around different self discovery themes. This is a refreshing change from the usual "Write, write, write!" I found that I felt MORE creative and very relaxed. It's a fun return to the "paste and scissors" free-for-all of your early school days.
The only frustration I experienced was that you have to wait a while to gather up enough pictures in your theme before you can actually start putting a collage together.
The themes include: Authenic Style, Entertainment, Authenic Sucess, The House of Belonging, Return to Self, Mystery, Sacred connections, Spiritual Journey, and Someday.
I was surprised by what pops up out of your subconcious when you look at your pictures as a collection -something that isn't as likely to happen with just writing where you can tend to over-analyze.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to journaling
This is a great guide to journaling for someone who is just starting out, or someone who may have been journaling for a long time but would like to add dimension to their journals. It gives lots of tips and techniques that help to add depth and variety to journals. It even includes a section on poetry. There are lots of exercises that can be used as idea starters. For an individual who wants to expand their journaling life, or begin to journal, this is a great guide. It could be used in a group setting as a guide as well.It is a book that I will read and re-read, and will use over a long period as a guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful writing tool
Provided several ideas for journaling. Got me doing types of writing I wouldn't normally, flexing my creative muscles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got me going in my journal
I love to write, but I always get into a rut with my journaling and stop. Many Faces got me into other kinds of journal writing that I would never have thought to try. It's made it more enjoyable, and my writing is getting better too! I still look back to the book for ideas and inspirations. I'd recommend it to anyone who's interested in journaling!

3-0 out of 5 stars OK as far at it goes
If you seriously want help in developing creative journal writing, don't buy this book. If you are just thinking about starting journalling, and want some enthusiasm and guidelines, give it a try.
I have read many journalling books (The New Diary - excellent;Keeping a Journal you Love - brilliant)but Ms Senn's book was a disappointment. It is sometimes quite fascile and patronising. For example, here are two snippets from her section on keeping a gardening journal:
"If you keep a chart of your vegetable garden each season, you won't replant the same crop in the same place each year."
"Keep a chart of the bulbs and tubers and the dates on which you divide them...It's easy to lose track when life gets busy!"
This is probably very good advice, but surely more appropriate for a gardening book?
The journal entries of her own that she shares with us are sugar coated and slightly embaressing - I found the references to "my darling Caitlin" (her grand daughter) really too much.
Having said all this, Ms Senn is really enthusiastic about the benefits and satisfaction of journal writing and for this she must be praised. It just wasn't to my taste.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for creative writing classes
Ms. Senn has written a book that can be used effectively in creative writing classes.
As a community college English instructor, I'm using
The Many Faces of Journaling with my students. Some of the male students complain at first
because they think this is a "girl's book." After a week, they start
saying they enjoy the writing exercises. I'm glad I found this book one
day while browsing the Web at amazon.com. ... Read more

Product Description
A heartfelt combination of spiritual discovery, environmental observations, and journal writing, The Wise Earth Speaks to Your Spirit offers readers a 52-week cycle of themed essays and related questions about the natural world. Entries on night and sky and parakeets, wind and mud and rain, snakes and tea and thistle, among others. In addition to folklore, myths, stories, and symbols connected to each theme, Janell Moon includes inspirational quotes from well-known writers - among them E. B. White, Ursula K. LeGuin, Gertrude Stein, and Mother Theresa - and shares her original poetry and personal experiences with the natural world. As she writes in the introduction, "It is my wish that through the telling of these stories, and the deepening of your own connections through your writing, that you will better enjoy a rainbow or a tree with angel's wings in a storm." "In this era of mechanization and cultural disintegration, Moon calls us back to our source, our strength, our refuge: the earth from which we draw our very existence. From the strands of myth, folklore, symbolism, and her own personal stories, she weaves 52 essays that carry us through a year's worth of inspired journaling. She proves, beyond a doubt, that we can go home again, that we can reconnect with earth's sacredness, and that the journey is well worth the effort."- Mari Messer, workshop presenter and author of Pencil Dancing: New Ways to Free Your Creative Spirit ... I am enjoying reading the Wise Earth Speaks To Your Spirit and find that the exercises give the depth and structure I need to explore my spiritual life in a new way. It's a great book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Expected more.
I was expecting more depth from a book like this. Instead we have some simple meditations and exercises that don't quite resonate with my need for deep ecological connection with the earth. Each one has one of the four book's covers and are beautiful on the inside. The pages contain either quotes from that book or screen-printed trees that one would find in Forks. 5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS BOOK
This is the book I've been looking for! It takes me through all the steps a beginner needsto get started.

5-0 out of 5 stars Art Journaling with a graphic edge
The style of this book has a strong graphic element that I really like. This is not the way I naturally work so it has been a bit of a stretch for me and I'm seeing elements of it creeping into my own art journaling. I say, yeah! and thank you for expanding my visual vocab.

These two guys gave me some great ideas for using watercolors and watersoluble media that are inspiring me. I like their examples for using text, stencils and tracing. I'm enjoying their prompt section very much. There is not a single beautiful vintage-looking girl in sight; instead think: sharpies and lettering and stencils. Sharpies and lettering were not a "go-to" for me and it's exciting to work with these new elements.

I like opening this book randomly for an bit of inspiration. I think the visuals here are very appealing to teens, twenty-somethings and guys. And let's face it: most of what is out there in the art journaling world has been largely aimed at women so this is very refreshing.

One of the things I look for in craft and art books is the aesthetic. I've been around for a while so it's hard to spring new techniques on me. But great new ways to present the techniques is something that draws me in for a second (and more) look. I'm excited when I see something different.

5-0 out of 5 stars must have!
This book is beautiful and so helpful! I love it and have shared it with so many of my friends. Each of us has found something new and inspiring in it. It teaches techniques for application in your visual journal or any art, without being cookie cutter! So many books seem to show you how to make something that will look just like the pictures when you are done. This book is the spark for your own creativity!

I bought this book after having been to a workshop with Eric and Dave, the authors. It is amazing! The workshop showed me many of the techniques in the book, but the setting was overwhelming and I missed many details. Having this book is a God send! I am able to go back and look up techniques I missed, or ones I hadn't seen before and apply it to my visual journal.

I keep it near my work space and refer to it often! Thanks guys for such a great book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas
Even though it's called "Journal" Junkies, this book isn't about the diary type of journaling. It's more about getting inspired to put something down on paper in your artist sketchbook every day than it is about adding visual interest to the pages of your written journal. But it has some really great ideas for various artsy techniques, and I'm enjoying working my way through, trying out all of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best art journaling book for beginners
This is the best book on starting an art journal that I've seen, and refreshingly, is written by two men.In fact, every other art journling book I have is by a woman. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in starting an art journal. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review
Daily priorities often don't extend past getting the laundry doneOr cleaning the cat box. Bigger goals, the ones that guide your life, canbe trickier to establish, and it's possible to start the year with oneidea and have a total shift occur because of a single incident. Keepinga regular journal is one method of tracking your life priorities, andWhat Really Matters to Me combines gentle self-help tips with allthe room you need to set aside the daily trivia and get on with thebigger picture. Author Robyn Conley-Weaver has been a teacher and editorfor years. In these pages, she emphasizes self-discovery with writing prompts such as "What causes you the most stress on a daily basis?" and "list any reasons you've chosen to live without joy or doing what you love." Accompanyingblank pages are often decorated with a small illustration or quotes: "I amnot bound to win, but I am bound to be true ... to live up to the light that Ihave," from Abraham Lincoln. The text from Conley-Weaver surrounding theprompts is deeply personal; she shares much of her life story with readersin a way meant to offer encouragement. The real story here is the oneyou'll create yourself, full of surprises, emotion, and, ultimately, a custom-tailored guide to becoming exactly the person who will make you the happiest. --Jill Lightner ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Worth Contemplating
This is a guided journal with writing prompts to get out all of the really important matters in your life. There is alot of writing space which can be looked as good or bad depending on personal preference. I would have preferred a little less space and more prompts. This journal is simple and easy to get through and at times more than just a book with blank lines running through its spaces.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Better Life Through Better Choices
I found this journal very helpful because it provided insight into how our choices determine our quality of life. The author is very knowledgeable and guides the reader through the analysis of painful circunstances to choices for a more productive life.
Anne Jones

3-0 out of 5 stars Missing a Bigger Picture
The book is a little heavier on the fill-in-the-blank structure than others of its kind. Once I filled in the blanks, it left me asking "Okay...and then what?" There were no follow-up questions to help you explore any particular revelation any deeper and no 'summary' kind of exercises that tied a series of filled-in blanks together for a bigger picture. It felt like something was still missing.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT REALLY MATTERS TO ME...IS THIS BOOK
Robyn Conley-Weaver literally 'weaves' emotion and words. She inspires the reader by reminding him of his own power and once he recognizes that it is there within, she shows him how to use it to his best advantage. The stories and exercises in this book are magical. They will release you from whatever dark place you may currently find yourself.I highly recommend this book--even if your world is all rose color glass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Trip
Robyn Conley-Weaver's book reminds me of the time I backpacked through Europe just after college.Sure I enjoyed the sights in Paris, Milan and Amsterdam, but if I were really honest with myself, I'd say the most important things I learned on the trip were about myself.

WHAT REALLY MATTERS TO ME is both compelling and inspiring.A must read for anyone who has ever striven to be a better person--and it's a bargain compared to the price of a Eurail pass. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I Remember You, A Grief Journal

5-0 out of 5 stars When It's Time To Remember
After the acute mourning phase fades, and it will (although it takes time), the time for remembering appears. This is a wonderful book for writing your memories, putting in photos, or doing whatever you want as a personal tribute to your loved one.I think it would be hard to work on this book shortly after losing someone, but a few years later, or whenever grief turns into the quiet background music of everyday life, it is time to write down all of the wonderful and precious memories.

This book would make a wonderful gift to anyone who has lost a loved one - even for yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grieving a Mother

4-0 out of 5 stars The Healing Effect of Journaling
The Remembering with Love Journal, by Elizabeth Levang, Ph.D.

Described as a "companion for the first year of grieving and beyond", this hard cover journal provides mourners with an opportunity to examine and express their feelings related to the death of a significant person. Recognizing the healing effect of journaling, The Remembering with Love Journal gently guides the reader through the experience of grief and healing.

The journal covers fifty-nine weeks and is designed with some initial structure for identifying one's thoughts and feelings. Each page contains an affirmation for support, along with suggestions for reflection and journaling. The journal is divided into five sections, beginning with "The Early Days" and "The Early Weeks." One theme contained within these sections is A Changed Life. The reader is provided the following statements for reflection and response:
· ... a vivid, positive memory I have of the two of us.
· ... what my loved one's life meant to me.

· ... another time in my life when change was painful.

The next sections, "The Uneven Path" and "The Continuing Journey Towards Healing" are intended to address the concerns and struggles of working to heal and survive.

The last section, "Beyond the First Year," recognizes that grief does not end at the anniversary and provides avenues for continued support. A theme within this section is Drawing Strength, which is clearly expressed in the following affirmation, "The death of my loved one has changed me. I will draw upon my loved one's legacy of love for strength."

The journal contains quotes from those who are grieving the death of a spouse, parent, child, relative and friend. Through these personal statements, the reader recognizes that he or she is not alone; their feelings and thoughts are validated.
