References Geography Topography and Drainage Reno County is in the Great Bend lowland physiographic division as designated by Adams (1903), except for a small area in the southwest part of the county that is in the High Plains section of the Great Plains province and a small area in the south-central part of the county that is in the Red Hills division (Fig. 3). The Great Bend lowland division is nearly flat in most places but in some areas has slight relief. The belt of sand dunes along the north side of the Arkansas River valley, the sand dunes in the west part of the county, and the area underlain by the Ninnescah shale adjacent to Ninnescah River provide the only prominent relief. Figure 3 Map showing physiographic provinces in Kansas. The highest points in the county are in the sand dunes in the western part of the county. The altitude of some of the points in the sand dunes is about 1,800 feet above sea level. The lowest points in the county are about 1,380 feet above sea level and occur along the Arkansas River and Ninnescah River where they leave the county. Reno County is drained by the Arkansas River and its tributaries. The south part of the county is drained by the North Fork of the Ninnescah River, which joins the Arkansas River in eastern Sumner County near Oxford. The northeast part of the county is drained by the Little Arkansas River, which joins the Arkansas River in Sedgwick County at Wichita. The major tributaries to the Ninnescah River are Silver Creek, Goose Creek, and Red Rock Creek. The major tributaries of the Arkansas River in Reno County are Cow Creek, Salt Creek, and Peace Creek.

References Geography Topography and drainage Douglas County lies partly within the Dissected Till Plains and partly within the Osage Plains sections of the Central Lowlands physiographic province as defined by Fenneman (1931). Schoewe (1949) included the area partly in the Attenuated Drift Border division of the Dissected Till Plains and partly in the Osage Cuestas division of the Osage Plains. The major topographic features are the east-trending Kansas and Wakarusa River valleys and the upland cuestas formed by differential erosion of the limestone, shale, and sandstone beds. Locally, as in the Hesper area in the eastern part of the county, plains developed on glaciofluvial deposits are minor topographic features. Kansas River and its tributaries drain the northern three fourths of the county and tributaries of Marais des Cygnes River drain the southern fourth. The highest point in the county is in the south-western part and is about 1,200 feet above sea level; the lowest point is along Kansas River at the east edge of the county, about 778 feet above mean sea level. Kansas River has an average gradient of about 2 feet per mile. Climate Douglas County has a humid continental climate. Nearly three fourths of the annual precipitation falls during the growing season, which averages 196 days. The average date of the last killing frost in the spring is April 10 and the average date of the first killing frost in the fall is October 23.

It is bordered by Missouri (E), Oklahoma (S), Colorado (W), and Nebraska (N). Almost rectangular in shape and mostly part of the Great Plains , Kansas is famous for its seemingly endless fields of ripe golden wheat. The land rises more than 3,000 ft (914 m) from the eastern alluvial prairies of Kansas to its western semiarid high plains, which stretch toward the foothills of the Rocky Mts. The rise is so gradual, however, that it is imperceptible, although the terrains of the east and the west are markedly different. The state is drained by the Kansas and Arkansas rivers, both of which generally run from west to east. Topeka is the capital; other important cities are Wichita (the largest city in the state), Lawrence, and Kansas City (adjoining Kansas City, Mo.). Points of historical interest in Kansas include the boyhood home of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Eisenhower Library in Abilene. In Medicine Lodge is the home of Carry Nation, who, at the turn of the century, became convinced of her divine appointment to destroy the saloons; her home there is now a museum. Fort Leavenworth is the site of a large Federal penitentiary.

This class will examine the historical geography of the state: settlement patterns from the earliest residents back in the last ice age, contact between the first settlers and those of European descent who came later, and the impact of all these people on the environment around them. Well look at how things in Kansas have changed over time to get us to where we are now. Im hoping well do some field trips to see first hand how things have changed in Lyon and Chase Counties, how economic development has affected population growth and distribution, how the increasing diversity of the states population is changing Emporia and other Kansas communities, and how urban growth is affecting the states relationship to the rest of the Great Plains and the U.S. in general. In October 2000, ESU will host the Flint Hills Regional Environmental Colloquium , and students will have a chance to hear local community leaders and invited academics discuss and debate these issues.

Extractions: Meet the DASC Staff! To see former DASC employees, click here Kenneth A. Nelson is the manager of DASC and a Research Assistant (GIS Specialist) for the Kansas Geological Survey. Ken has been with the DASC team since May, 1995. He graduated from the University of Kansas with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Geography and Environmental Studies in 1993. Ken has worked at GRAIL (Geographic Research Applications and Information Lab), City of Overland Park Planning Department, and Computer Data Systems, Inc., a GIS contractor at the EPA Region 7 office. Ken's responsibilities at DASC include supervising the daily operation of DASC including database archiving, quality assurance and distribution of the Core Database, contract and grant maintenance, and automation of data request procedures. She graduated from the University of Kansas in May 1993 with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Geography and Environmental Studies. After graduating she was employed by a national public busing company as a GIS Analyst. This package was installed at school bus contract locations across the country. Eileen brings real world GIS, client support, and product enhancement experience to DASC.
