The aim was experience its natural environment, to learn about the level of development of the country and to have fun. I think we managed to do all three!! This was a return visit to the Taita Discovery Centre(TDC) in SE Kenya. The department took out a smaller group in 2000 and wanted to return to this magical remote area to see how things had changed in the last two years. Judging from the response the 2000 trip was highly thought of amongst the students. There were some changes - many not that desirable. It seems that Kenya, like many other LEDCs is trapped in downward spiral of poverty,debt and corruption. Nairobi seems to epitomise all these aspects, especially since the decline of tourism in the 1980s. We only stayed here two nights but the feeling was that of general unease and dissatisfaction. There were few visible improvements since our visit in 2000, although the drought that had caused power cuts then, seemed to have abated in this part of Africa at least. This time our visit coincided with the run up to the elections. The president, Arap Moi, who appears universally disliked is stepping down. There is a sense that things might improve now - I hope this does not end up in disappointment. One wonders how much more the young Kenyan population will put up with before desperation leads to some form of revolution.

From the coast, the altitude changes gradually through the coastal belt and plains (below 152 metres above sea level), the dry intermediate low belt to what is known as the Kenya Highlands (over 900 metres above sea level). The monotony of terrain in the low belt is broken by residual hills, masses of broken boulders and inselbergs. Settlement is confined to places where water can be found. Wildlife are masters of the greater part of the low belt. The famous Amboseli Game Reserve and Tsavo National Parks are situated here. The Great Rift Valley bisects the Kenya Highlands into east and west. Mount Kenya is on the eastern side. The Highlands are cool and agriculturally rich. Both large and small holder farming is carried out in the highlands. Major cash crops are tea, coffee, pyrethrum, wheat and corn. Livestock farming is also practised. The Lake Victoria Basin is dominated by Kano plains which are suited for farming through irrigation. The northern part of Kenya is plain and arid. Pastoralism is the main land use activity. However, a variety of food crops do well through irrigation.

Location Kenya is positioned on the equator on Africa's east coast. Its northernmost and southernmost points are approximately equidistanta little over 40 north and south of the equator. Kenya shares borders with five other countries. The perimeter of Kenya's international land borders is 3,446 km., including borders with Sudan (306 km), Ethiopia (779 km), Somalia (682 km), Tanzania (769 km), and Uganda (772 km). Geographical Regions The country is commonly divided into seven major geographic regions, as follows. This region is characterized by a variety of geographical features, a variety that is particularly pronounced as one travels south or north. The southern shoreline consists largely of stretches of coral rock and sand interrupted by bays, inlets, and branched creeks. Following the coast is a barrier reef that is broken only rarely. Traveling inland from the coast, one encounters a narrow plain, and later a low plateau area reaching an elevation of about 500 feet, and, finally, a line of discontinuous ridges. The principal geographic feature of the northern part of the region is the Lamu Archipelago, which was formed when a rise in the ocean level inundated coastal lands.
