5-0 out of 5 stars Read to Your Child to Improve Bonding and Intellect!
Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in avariety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading andimproved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate betterto others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending timetogether watching television fails as a substitute.

To help otherparents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, ouryoungest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that wereread to her as a young child. Kangaroo for Christmas was one of herpicks.

On the day before Christmas, an express truck left a large box onthe porch. On the box was a card that said, "MERRY CHRISTMAS TOKATHRYN FROM UNCLE DINGO."Kathryn hoped it was full of candy.Shesaw something brown and fuzzy move inside. It was too big to be a kittycat. She and her Daddy opened the box and out hopped a large kangaroo. Kathryn is thrilled. She calls the kangaroo Adelaide and decides to makeAdelaide her best friend.

Then Kathryn decided to visit Grandma tointroduce her to Adelaide.Kathryn jumped on Adelaide's back, and went forthe wildest ride ever! After many near disasters, they got to Grandma'shouse where they slowed Adelaide down when she stepped in Grandma's candyand got stuck.Attaching Adelaide to the top of Grandma's car, they hoppedhome. There Kathryn and Adelaide got a good night's sleep.Adelaide gotsome boots for the winter and birch leaves to eat from Santa Claus. Kathryn got a pogo stock so she would never have to ride on Adelaide's backagain.

This is a great bonding story because Kathryn needs help from herGrandma and her Daddy to handle Adelaide. She also learns how to takebetter care of her pet, which encourages responsibility.Kathryn alsolearns better ways to play with her pet, which is also good for encouragingimagination and creativity.

Like Hop on Pop, the book has a basic, humorous presence that will keep your child riveted. Also, s/he may justwant to take a little hop like a kangaroo, or even try a pogo stick.

Youcan also use this story to make up your own stories. What would happen ifsomeone sent your child an armadillo for Christmas?Or a lion? You getthe idea.

Have fun with your child and expand both of your horizons.Besure to overcome your misconception that children only learn fromrealistic, serious books. They will usually learn faster from books thatappeal to their sense of fun.

Product Description

This poignant story tells of how people first learned to surf through Malu Kangaroo, a kangaroo spirit, who carves a piece of wood and takes it to some children playing on a beach. He floats it on the water and shows them how to use it. The children learn to balance and guide the board through the waves "riding the high crests" and "flying before the crashing breakers."

No one can jump as high as the very boastful kangaroo. But the littlest kangaroo challenges him to a jumping contest anyway. Even the very boastful kangaroo has to laugh when the very little and very clever kangaroo outsmarts him and wins the competition. Product Description
Fiction. "KANGAROO is a novel of the most devastating, the most terrifying hilarity. It belongs in the genre of satire;however, its net effect is neither revulsion at the system nor comicrelief, but pure metaphysical terror. This effect has less to do withthe author's rather apocalyptical worldview as such than with thequality of his ear. Aleshkovsky, whose reputation in Russia as asongwriter is extremely high (in fact, some of his songs are part ofnational folklore), hears the language like a prodigy. The hero ofKANGAROO is a pickpocket whose career spans the entire history ofSoviet Russia, and the novel is an epic yarn spun out in the foulestof language, for which either 'slang' of 'argot' fails as definition'(Joseph Brodsky). "The stunning impact of a CANDIDE, a SCHWEIK, a1984...Alehkovsky's special power is that he has a devastating senseof humor... Here, for the first time I know of, a Russian has strippedaway the sonorities of Soviet history to highlight its absurdity froman ordinary, human point of view" (New York Times).5/18/99 ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Absurd and Hillarious!
An absurdist farce about the life of Fan Fanych, alias Etcetera; a thiefin Stalinist Russia who is sent to the gulags for the supposed crime ofraping an aging kangaroo in the Moscow Zoo.Narrated by the samecriminal shortly after his release it begins with an elaborateinterrogation and show trial where the prisoner begins to doubt his ownmemory. Followed by many years in the camps with a cohort of earlyBolsheviks and his reminiscing of earlier escapades (Picking Hitler'spocket, and eavesdropping at Yalta, etc.)

Yes, this is another story of arussian writer who has suffered through the senseless paranoia of Stalin'sjudicial system, yet the writing is original and the dialogue crude: I keptthinking of a Kathy Acker novel. The whole carries you along and definitelymakes this an interesting companion to Solzhenitsyn, Brodsky, etc. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and cute
This book describes how to prepare your kangaroo for the daily routine of going to school. It explains that a kangaroo should be dressed cleanly and neatly, be careful when crossing the streets, sit quietly on the bus, and follow the rules in school. In a humorous fashion, the book answers a lot of questions that curious readers may have about what school may be like.It has about 425 words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Avoid school daze with excited kangaroo school ways!
In this delightful little book a young child has the opportunity to learn what to expect on the first day of school. The book encourages question asking and answering, encourages activities that can be done during the reading and allows a child to glean useful tidbits about preparing for school and what might happen once there.

Manners discussed include crossing the street, riding on the bus and listening to the teacher. Other discussions include how to find the class and desk, what might be learned, how some things might be easy while others might take more time, recess and playtime, lunch, bathroom breaks and more!

BEAUTIFULLY illustrated with an appealing and expressive kangaroo. I would say this is a must for any young child getting ready for their first school experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for children starting school.
Author, Sonia Levitin, & illustrator, Jeff Seaver, have collaborated again on this second book in what I hope will be an ongoing etiquette series for young children. When Kangaroo Goes To School is a delightful story of a kangaroo's preparations and expectations for his first day at school..."do you know the rules?", "What about show and tell?", "Where will we eat?" and so on.Kangaroo will steal your heart and share the rules of "school etiquette" with your children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Colorful and Interactive
My daughters, ages 4 and 2.5, are big fans of the books written by Lorianne Siomades. The bright colors are eye catching, the text featuring large font is easy to read.As a parent I am constantly searching for books that are not only fun to read but educational as well. This book packs in a lot in 32 pages.I can teach my girls the similarities between familiar animals, such as "Dog and squirrel...both bury things."I can introduce animals that are not so familiar, such as a badger and dragonfly.I can encourage my girls to find the wriggly worm on each page.AND - as an added bonus- the author has "hidden" another worm somewhere on the page (hint: look for the eyes). My girls are thrilled when they find those! Definitely recommended reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars A toddler's favorite!
Our 19 month old daughter has two of Siomades' books - this one and "My Box of Color." Undeniably, among all of the books we've gotten her, and she must have 100 by now, these two are her very favorites. Tell her to choose some books to read, and invariably she will come back toting these two. She will want us to read them to her not once, not twice, but over and over again. Often I will find her even leafing through the pages, engaged by their contents, all on her own. Try to interest her in another book, and very often she'll toss it aside and reach for "Kangaroo and Cricket" one more time!

Although we also think they're darling, my husband and I have tried to guess at their great allure through a child's eyes - whether it's the brightly colored illustrations, the rhyming and rythmic text, or possibly the signature little worms on each and every page (some a challenge to find), which at every reading, our daughter takes great pleasure pointing out to us with squeals of delight as she shows us every one.

Whatever the reason, the two books have become a joyous daily ritual of interaction with our daughter, one that never fails to derive many smiles from all three of us at every reading. These are among the moments spent together that we all look forward to the most. This is clearly a toddler's choice for the perfect book. A good choice, in our opinion, as the lesson it teaches is that we all have something in common, regardless of our differences.

As a parent, we live for such things that delight and tickle our children. I would highly recommend this book, and we intend to seek out other books by Siomades as well in order to expand our daughter's "oh so very favorite" part of her library! ... Read more
