Excerpt: Trinity Episcopal Church (Danville, Kentucky) -The origin of the Episcopal church in Kentucky dates to 1796 when Christ Church in Lexington was organized. It wasn't until 1809, however, that the parish was formally established when the first vestry was elected. In 1822 a second Episcopal church was established in Louisville, it too being named Christ Church. The building, which is now Christ Church Cathedral, was completed in 1824. In 1829 Reverend George T. Chapman, rector of Lexington's Christ Church from 18201830, proposed the formation of a Diocese. In working towards this goal, Reverend Chapman visited Danville and organized a congregation. The group of local citizens who were instrumental in the formation of the new church were mostly physicians, lawyers, bankers, merchants, and landowners. Members of the committee formed to erect a church building included Dr. Ephraim McDowell and his wife, Sarah Shelby McDowell, daughter of Isaac Shelby, the first Governor of Kentucky. Another influential member and largest contributor to the church was James Birney, a wealthy merchant, who was the father of James G. Birney, the prominent abolitionist. The new church building, completed in late 1830 or early 1831, was built by Robert Russel, Jr., a local brick maker and mason. Russel, a native of Virginia, settled in Danville in 1805. He built almost all of the early brick buildings in Danville, including Old Centre in 1820. Russel's fees must have been modest for the vestry minutes indicate that it was deci...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=20564237 ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good third book in the Sarah's Journey series.
It's June of 1778, and thirteen-year-old Sarah Moore has been living with her relatives in Williamsburg for a year when she receives the news that her mother and new baby sister are seriously ill back home on the Kentucky frontier. Sarah immediately leaves Williamsburg to return home. When she arrives, she finds that their home has been burnt to the ground by Indians, her family is living at the fort, and her father and older brother have gone off to fight the Indians. Sarah must struggle with the challenges of living in this harsh frontier land, with the constant threat of Indian attacks and worry over her family.

Readers who enjoyed the previous two books about Sarah Moore will definitely want to read this one as well. Although the Sarah's Journey books are not among my top favorites, they are still sweet, well-written, and historically accurate stories that will most likely be enjoyed by young readers who enjoy historical fiction set in colonial and pioneer times. I particularly enjoyed the colonial frontier setting of this book and the first in the series. It's a setting I'd really like to see more of, as it combines my two favorite historical fiction topics, colonial times and pioneer life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reunon in Ketucky is a great book!
I read this book because my friends older sister said that it was a good book, it looked kinda spid, but I read it anyway I am sure glad I did read it was the best book! know I am looking to buy the other ones!

2-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but not visually appealing
I appreciate Ms. Burton's efforts in researching and collecting the information for this book. While interesting, many of the photographs are either too large - where the text should have taken "center stage", as in the section named "Conflict on the Frontier".Visually, there is far too much text on the left-hand page and the photo opposite (Clash of Cultures) should have been much smaller. This is an error throughout the book, making the presentation, especially for Kentucky's 4th grade students - the presumable audience - less than attractive.Color choices for the text on top of background images was also an issue. Minor editing flaws were found, but these did not effect the overall flow.Time will tell if this author makes her mark in the publishing field. ... Read more

Excerpt:DuPont Manual High School is a secondary school located in the Old Louisville neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, USA and serving students in grades 912. It is a part of the Jefferson County Public School District. DuPont Manual is recognized by the United States Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School. Manual opened in 1892 as an all-male manual training school. It was the second public high school in Louisville. Manual merged with its rival, Male High School, into a consolidated school from 1915 to 1919. Manual permanently merged with the Louisville Girls High School in 1950 and moved into their Gothic style three story building, built in 1934. In 2004, after conducting a poll, Louisville's Courier-Journal newspaper listed Manual as one of Louisville residents' ten favorite buildings. As a coeducational school, Manual experienced a decline in discipline and test scores in the 1970s. In 1984, Manual became a magnet school, allowing students from throughout the district to apply to five specialized programs of study, or magnets. Manual and Male High School have the oldest football rivalry in the state, dating back to 1893. Manual's football team has won five state titles and claims two national championships. In the 1980s and 1990s Manual became a prominent academic school and has been included several times in lists of America's top high schools in Redbook and Newsweek magazines. In 1892, Louisville factory owner Alfred Victor du Pont donated $150,000 to the board of Louisville Public Schools to establish a training school to teach young men industrial arts ("manual") skills that would fit them for their duties in life. The Victorian building was built on the corner of Brook and Oak Streets by the firm of Clark and Loomis, which al... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=74341 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I still drag this out every year in March
One of the very few high points of my high school career was watching the 1978-79 Highlands Bluebirds varsity basketball team play in the state tournament at Rupp Arena in Lexington.A big part of what I enjoyed about it was getting out of school for two days, but I also discovered that I loved the way that Kentucky puts on a basketball tournament. It's impossible not to get caught up in the excitement from the time you enter Rupp Arena and when I saw this book on the shelf in the bookstore at NKU, it all came flooding back to me.At first I would just sit and read the book right in the store when I found myself with a break between classes, but eventually I broke down and bought a copy of my own. It's an excellent book on this comparitively narrow subject, but like I said, it's one I dig out every year around the time the district tournaments start.Mr. Embry, ever consider doing an update? ...
