Product Description
In spite of considerable similarities, the American West and Kenya have rarely been compared or contrasted by historians, until now. This book examines the lives of women colonists on the American and Kenyan frontiers to demonstrate the importance of gender and race in shaping women's frontier experience. Although the West and Kenya are half a world apart, have natives of different races, and developed at different periods, the lives of women colonists show remarkable parallels.

On both frontiers, white women were active agents of colonial conquest. They believed in the necessity of imposing their culture upon native peoples to bring about "civilization." In turn, the colonized responded by resisting, which meant that women of color seldom allied with white women.

Riley's discussion of the historical experiences of these two frontiers addresses such crucial issues as women's roles in the continuation of colonization in the U.S. West as opposed to their roles in its collapse in Kenya. Although she uses postmodern theoretical concepts of self and other, of resistance and adaptation, her writing will appeal to a broad audience of students, scholars, and general readers. ... Product Description

Kenya plays a key role in the conflicts between the Western and Islamic worlds, making a grasp of its politics, international relations, military services, and security status an important study. Global Security Watch—Kenya provides a thorough introduction to the security issues facing the modern-day nation, offering policymakers, researchers, and general readers a window into this globally important, sub-Saharan country.

This expert analysis is the first to examine the strategic dimensions of Kenya and the political and military circumstances that have shaped the country. Following an overview of Kenya's history, geography, and politics, the book explores the development of the Kenya Armed Forces; Kenya's critical relations and security issues in Greater East Africa, particularly with Tanzania, Uganda, and Somalia; and the country's strategic relations with the United States. Drawing on objective historical and contemporary research, interviews with influential figures, and his own first-hand experiences, the author underscores Kenya's enduring strategic importance and offers recommendations on policy decisions.

Product Description
For centuries, Kenya’s game-laden plains and forests were the rewarding hunting grounds of her native African population. Black Poachers, White Hunters traces the history of hunting there in the colonial era, describing the British attempt to impose the practices and values of nineteenth-century European aristocratic hunts. This both created and enforced an image of African inferiority and subordination. Ultimately conservationists came to claim sovereignty over African wildlife, completing the transformation of indigenous hunters into criminal poachers and seeking to eliminate them altogether from the “sportsman’s paradise” of Kenya.ABOUT THE AUTHOR---Edward I. Steinhart is an associate professor of history at Texas Tech University, Lubbock. ... Read more

Product Description
This is the first volume in a new series Africa: Policies for Prosperity. For the first time in more than a generation, sustained economic growth has been achieved across the continent - despite the downturn in global economic fortunes since 2008 - and in many countries these gains have been realized through policy reforms driven by the decisive leadership of a new generation of economic policymakers. The process of reform is continuous, however, and the challenge currently facing this new generation is how to harness these favourable gains in macroeconomic stability and turn them into a coherent strategy for sustainable growth and poverty reduction over the coming decades.

These challenges are substantial and encompass the broad remit of economic policy. Each volume in this series brings leading scholars into the policy arena to examine these challenges and to lay out, in a rigorous but accessible manner, key challenges and policy options facing policymakers on the continent.

This first volume on Kenya explores the challenges facing an economy standing at a crossroads. Kenya has experienced a period of high and sustained growth since the mid 1990s, growth which involved economic transformation away from a heavy reliance on traditional economic activities towards an emerging manufacturing economy. But this process, and the economic and social stability that had come to characterize Kenya, have been severely tested by the post-election violence of 2008. Restoring equitable growth and sustaining the structural transformation of the economy is essential if Kenya is to leave this dark period behind.

The chapters in this volume address the key issues that will face economic policy makers in the coming years. They cover the conventional but central question of finance and macroeconomic management, but also much deeper structural issues of trade, employment generation and education; of land policy, migration and urbanization; and the fiscal challenges facing an ageing but increasingly urbanized (and increasingly affluent) society. ... Product Description
This book joins the study of African literature to the study of African history. Its focus is on the creative political work that writers in colonial central Kenya did with texts. Generations of African innovators wrote scripts, composed casts of characters, and drew people together as actors in a role play. Political entrepreneurs were also theater directors. In Bible translations, in record books, lists, and novels, innovators contrasted the corrupt present with the new era on the horizon, making social innovation seem like an urgent, immediate necessity. Their visionary work obligated people to commit themselves as partisans, bound to play a part in a project larger than themselves. In central Kenya, the work of political mobilization was like a casting call. As an interdisciplinary essay on the political uses of texts, Creative Writing will draw interest from scholars of comparative literature, from readers of Ngugi wa Thiong'o's fiction, and from historians interested in the nationalist imagination. ... Product Description
Kenya, simultaneously heralded for its political stability and economic success and criticized as a wellspring of elitism and class exploitation, remains a close ally of the West and a symbol of capitalism in Africa. Yet its exquisite natural beauty and wildlife hide a more mundane reality. The country is rural, poor, and without mineral wealth, and less than 20 percent of Kenya's land area is readily available for dense human settlement. In this revised edition, Miller and Yeager address these social issues while tracing political and economic developments from early precolonial times to the contemporary period. The book captures the aggressive, self-confident spirit that characterizes Kenya and provides unique insights into how this nation of contemporary Africa is faring in its continuing quest for prosperity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars African Exploration
Monty Brown did a great job chronicling the exploits of some of the first Europeans to explore Kenya and some of the surrounding areas of east Africa. The book has been out of print for quite some time but it is still worth picking up if you are interested in African colonial history. Gun enthusiasts will especially enjoy Brown's account of the initial use of Mannlicher rifles by hunters and explorers in Africa. It looks great on a coffee table and is good reading to boot! ...
