2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing inspiring.. returned it
I think this book is aimed more at getting diabetic kids to cook than at cooking for diabetic kids.Since my son (newly diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes) is just 4, he won't be doing to main part of the cooking any time soon.

There were no photos of the recipes, and the format (A-Z recipes for each section) was distracting and annoying. The font used in the titles was jarring, and to top it all off, I didn't see one recipe I really wanted to try.

I returned this book. There are better ones out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute!
Very cute cookbook, a bit over my child's head and ability, but he's young. There are plenty of fun recipes to choose from, but be forewarned, plenty of artificial sweeteners and processed food.Fun, but not whole food, if that is what you're used to.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Fit for a Niche Market
In "Cooking Up Fun for Kids with Diabetes" the authors dedicate the first two chapters to providing a basic understanding of diabetes. The first chapter discusses diabetes with a slant toward helping a child understand it.The second one is from the perspective of what the adult parent needs to know.

The book contains simple recipes rated on a one, two, or three hand system with one being the easiest and three being the hardest. Each recipe provides information on serving size, exchanges, calories, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, fiber, protein, and carbohydrates. Some are just easy recipes that a child can do; others have been adapted to make it more fun for children. For example, an ordinary grilled cheese sandwich becomes a toasted cheese person.

"Cooking Up Fun for Kids with Diabetes" is a fun book of recipes and food related crafts for any child and a recommended read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Answer to a Mom's Prayer
I was delighted to read about this cookbook in my local newspaper and ran out to buy a copy right away. My eleven year old daughter was recently diagnosed with diabetes, so this book about nutrition/healthy cooking is an answer to my prayers. In addition to the fun and great-tasting recipes with complete nutrition information, there are clear explanations about the type 1 and type 2 diabetes conditions and even some fun "non-food" projects. My daughter and I spent a weekend afternoon in the kitchen making Fruit Filled Quesadillas- messy, but fun! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite Kids Cookbook
This kids cookbook was originally purchased over 16 years ago. It was well used by our sons & our youngest even took it with him to college. I recently purchased one for our grandson. The recipes are quick, easy and most of all appealing to kids. Best brownie recipe ever and we still make the burritos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
My 3 year old daughter loves to cook and especially enjoys this book. She is able to use the pictures to decide what she would like to make and she can help with the measurements due to the pictures and color coordinated measuring spoons. The chocolate chip cookie recipe is fantastic, we make them several times a month!

5-0 out of 5 stars A+ Fantastic Cookbook for Kids!
My brother and I each had a copy of this cookbook as kids, and my family still has the colorful measuring spoons that come with it. It has lots of kid-friendly recipes, complete with illustrations and very thorough directions. This would be my top recommendation for anyone looking to get kids interested in cooking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook for kids
This was my first cookbook when I was child.I now cook and bake on a regular basis and work in a kitchen.I thought it would be appropriate to reorder and recall what started my passion. The book is just as wonderful as I remember. It is wonderful for kids of all ages!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Kids Cookbook
We had this book growing up and it has some of the best, easy to make, recipes! It's not just goofy looking pancakes and such, it actually has decent recipes.
Even though my sisters and I are all adults now, my mom won't give up the book because she likes so many of the recipes. So I bought my own copy :-) ... Read more

Product Description
Getting your children involved in the kitchen at a young age is an exciting way to spend time together and teach them about nutrition, mathematics, measurements, history, and different types of food. Gadgetology makes it fun; your children will love using grown-up gadgets from an apple peeler to a whisk to play games, try simple recipes, make crafts, and conduct fun experiments. A box grater is handy for shredding mozzarella to make Super Easy Lasagna, but it s also great for shredding crayons onto wax paper to be ironed into "stained glass." You can also turn leftover walnut shells cracked with a nutcracker for Fudgy Walnut Brownies into perfect miniature sailboats. In Gadgetology, Pam Abrams offers so many creative, stimulating, and safe uses for everyday gadgets that the kitchen will become an educational playground for your whole family. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun in the kitchen
This book is fun for a child who enjoys learning to cook as well as some simple science experiments using cooking utensils. My grandson has already had fun with several of them.I recommend it for parents or grandparents to do with their young ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique and enthusiastically recommended addition

Profusely illustrated throughout with the full-color photography of Mellisa Punch, "Gadgetology" is a lively and 'kid friendly' collection of do-it-yourself instructions for recipe, crafts, games, and experimental projects utilizing thirty-five different kitchen implements or 'gadgets' common to any home. Kids can build an edible log cabin with an apple corer, make a strawberry taste like orange juice with a marinade injector, write secret messages in a lemon juice based invisible ink and the use of a citrus squeezer, make a jelly bean nest with a garlic press, and so much more! Fun and informative, "Gadgetology" is a unique and enthusiastically recommended addition to any family or community library children's activities reference collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Family Fun
This book is full of fun things to do as a family. What a treat.

5-0 out of 5 stars So much fun - for you and your child
This book is so much fun to use, and is gorgeous to look at.Having projects that you can do with your child by just going to the kitchen and using tools and food you already own is such a fabulous idea.So many project books for kids require items you have to go out and get especially for the project --- not very convenient for spur of the moment fun. This bookmakes it easy to be spontaneous. And you'll have as much fun as your child! My eight year old and three year old both love it.

I highly recommend this book! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I had hoped for
The ideas aren't particularly simple but can be done with a bit of forward planning. However, there aren't a great deal of new ideas in the book and if you are not from the US you will need to Google a lot of the terms (shoestring potatoes, catsup, etc). I was hoping for lots of ideas of quick and easy grub for cooking on a stick and bizarrely this book doesn't really provide that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very cutesy.Maybe a gift for a 1st grader?
Very little book with very little information.Good book to help build excitement for a young child (6?) who is going camping for the first time.Otherwise, pass on this one.Book needs more recipes or pictures or games or something.

3-0 out of 5 stars A cute book
This is a cute book filled with great ideas. This book is for those camping in a city campground though, and not for backpacking in the woods. It's also not a very good choice for the picky eater.

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of money.
All this is all over the internet.Nothing new and exciting here if you camp with groups like girl scouts or boy scouts.Get it from the library or search the internet for ideas

5-0 out of 5 stars fun book with neat ideas
I got this book at the library, but then came now online to purchase it.The ideas presented were fun and easy.I hadn't used tin foil on the campfire before, and the author gave some good ideas for that as well as items to be cooked on a stick. For example, I loved the idea about melting chocolate and bananas in the banana peel wrapped in tin foil. One reviewer commented about the use of perishables in the recipes. That wasn't a concern for us because of the refrigerator in our trailer.I suppose one could put the food items in an ice chest as long as one could drive to his/her campsite.

I highly recommend this book. It's fun and easy food for families while camping. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed review
I'm a working mother to a 3 year old and a husband who eats like one. I wanted to start making fast, easy dinners that were healthy so I purchased this book. The pros are that the recipes are really very simple and quick recipes and don't require a ton of preparation or shopping. My family also liked almost everything I've made from the book.

The con is that most of the recipes use exactly the same thing (canned green beans, no fat franks and a cream of x soup), so there isn't that much variety. My husband jokes about what I"m going to do with the green beans every night.I've had the book for a month, made 10 of the recipes and frankly, I'm already sick of it. There are only so many ways to mix soup and beans together before the family starts getting sick of it. But shame on me for only having this cookbook.

Finally, I find it really hard to believe that these meals are that healthy given all of the ingredients are processed foods. That said, you have to pick your battles - it makes cooking much simpler to mix a bunch of ingredients from cans and boxes together, instead of using fresh ingredients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Recipes
This cook book is great, the recipes are easy and the food is appealing to all ages. The only problem was that I had a hard time finding one of her staples:Jello cook & serve sugar free vanilla pudding. Then low and behold, I found out that amazon stocks the pudding and thousands of other packaged ingredients.Free shipping right to my front door, who can ask for more?

5-0 out of 5 stars Healthy Recipes For Children
Need a cookbook that helps you create healthier more appealing meals for your children? Want to know how to create meals from packages off the grocer's shelf? Then Joanna Lund's "Cooking Healthy With The Kids in Mind" is perfect for you!

Joanna M. Lund was once close to 300 pounds. She was tired of diets that would initially help, but could not keep the wait off. She developed Healthy Exchanges. This process helped her lose 130 pounds! She is the author of numerous bestselling Healthy Exchanges cookbooks.

She has been in national publications such as People and the New York Times. She has made hundreds of appearances on radio and television, including the shopping station, QVC, where she has been on regularly for 10 years! She is a speaker on weight-loss, diabetic and cardiac support groups. She runs the Healthy Exchanges business and publishes the Healthy Exchanges newsletter.

The Healthy Exchanges program gives you examples of serving sizes needed from each group each day to live a healthy life. For example, protein, breads, fruit, skim milk, vegetables, fats, free foods (herbs, spices, mustard etc.), optional calories (sugar-free gelatin, fat-free mayonnaise etc.) and sliders (an extra 80 calories that can be used in any group)!

This cookbook also gives you tips on substitutions, needed pantry items and equipment for your kitchen. She explains cooking terms she uses in this book, how to shop for healthy food, as well as a section on sodium, fat and processed foods.

Each recipe gives you the nutritional information for each serving, as well as the diabetic exchanges, and Joanna's Healthy Exchanges.

This cookbook is very easy-to-read. The recipes are easy-to-prepare. This book is perfect for someone who is tired of taking the guess-work out of healthy eating. The recipes are not time-consuming either.

This book is packed with over 200 recipes. The recipe chapters included in this book are: Get-Out-Of-Bed Breakfasts, Super-Super Soups (and Sandwiches, too), Veggies and Salads, Fill-'Em-Up Main Dishes, Delicious Desserts for Good Girls and Boys, Scrumptious Snacktimes, Special Occasion Spectaculars and The Tiny-Tot Top Ten.

Cherry Almond Tarts
Reprinted with permission.

This is my version of a healthy cherry cheesecake-in-a-cup, one I just know your family will love. If you haven't got a biscuit cutter, you can use a small glass to cut out the curcles of dough.

Serves 8 (2 each)

1 Pillsbury refrigerated unbaked 9-inch piecrust
1 (4-serving) package JELL-O sugar-free vanilla cook-and-serve pudding mix
1 (4-serving) package JELL-O sugar-free cherry gelatin
2 cups (one 16-ounce can) tart red cherries, packed in water, drained, and 1/2 cup liquid reserved
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon almond extract
2 tablespoons (1/2 ounce) slivered almonds

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Unfold piecrust. Using a (2 1/2- inch) biscuit cutter, cut 12 circles. Press dough scraps together and cut 4 more circles, for a total of 16 circles. Place pastry into 16 miniature muffin cups. Press into the cups to form shells. In a medium saucepan, combine dry pudding, dry gelatin, reserved cherry liquid, and water. Cook over medium heat until the mixture thickens and starts to boil, stirring often. Remove from heat. Stir in the cherries and almond extract. Evenly spoon mixture into prepared pastry shells. Sprinkle with about 1/4 teaspoon almonds over top of each. Bake for 18 - 22 minutes. Place pans on a wire rack and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Carefull remove tarts from pans and allow to cool completely.

In this fast-paced society, where time is of the essence, Joanna Lund has made life easier by helping create new healthy recipes for not only us, but also our children.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many items unavailable to Canadians!
I was disapointed when I got this book..not by the recipes (they seem tasty, and healthy enough) but by the products used in the recipes.

I am a canadian, and we cannot get a lot of the low fat/ no fat items that are listed in the recipes, also many of the brands that are used (recommended) are not available here. I had to go through each recipe, and figure out substitutes...and who knows if the recipes are as healthy or taste the same way as they were intended?? It took too much time, and effort to have to change everything...I was looking for a quick healthy recipe alternative.

I want a quick healthy cookbook geared at kids that use basic products and basic brands that we can get here!
A good one that I found if you are a Canadian is: Quick meals for healthy kids and busy parents ISBN# 1565610644, it is not by Candian authors...but it has everyday items that we can get here...try it first.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Choices for Picky Eaters!!!
I have three children under the age of 7, and they would eat practically all of these recipes! There are some processed foods in the ingredients, but for todays family I think that's what a lot of us are looking for.JoAnna explains in the beginning of her book (in case some of the reviewers missed it) that this cookbook may not be for everyone.Hot dogs are not for every family, but tofu isn't for mine! She did an excellent job breaking everything down for families, and you can tell she has a true desire for families to be healthy. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I like cookbooks the best with pictures to give an idea of what the foods are like.Other than that, it was great! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Can't wait to try the recipes...
I just received the book yesterday (6/18/07) and I can't wait to try the recipes. My daughter is picky so I wanted to try some other recipes that she would eat (and my son too). I like the macaroni (actually its shell macaroni) with the hot dog sliced partially through to make it look likean octopus and decorated the eyes with mustard (or you can use ketchup). This book is very flexible with the ingredients that you can use. It can certainly get your mind flowing to be creative for your kids. I recommend it. The pictures in the book are a wonderful help too. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe for kids but the adults won't want to eat the food!
I checked this out of the library to involve my kids more in making dinner and give them more ownership of their meals.Keep it simple, I figured, so I went for the Sandra Lee style.I have to say that the food is pretty gross -- horribly over-sugared desserts, salty unhealthy dishes, and expensive to make. The kids love it, however.....I'm just glad I can return it to the library in two weeks.

FEATURING 160 RECIPES and

Recipe for a happy family:

Start with a lot of love.

Mix in some firm rules, respect, a willingness to share, and a willingness to listen.

Season with lots of laughter, more than a few pets, a lot of "extended family," and frequent meals together.

Stir and mix frequently. Gets better with age.

When good friend Sheila Taylor Wells said, half jokingly, "We should write a cookbook together," I took her seriously. I think she was probably dismayed at the time, for I immediately sat down and pounded out five thousand words about my childhood. For me, food is also about continuity—and change. I bring to the table today the recipes of my mother, still often used and some, I’m sure, from her mother. I bring a few from my ex-husband’s Jewish tradition. So my cooking preserves the past and carries it on for my children and grandchildren.

Experience the author's life through her personal stories laced with family recipes.  This untraditional cookbook includes over 160 recipes, from appetizers to desserts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recipes for Happy Memories
I loved Judy Alter's delightful memoir, Cooking My Way through Life with Kids and Books. This is a book about life and love, kitchens and cooking and kids. It's full of recipes (good food, stick-to-the-ribs American food), and it reflects the times and places of Alter's experiences as a daughter, wife, mom, working mom, and cook. That some of the times and places she writes about happen to be times and places in my own life is coincidental and certainly added to my enjoyment of the book, but I'm willing to bet that you'll enjoy it, too.

Alter's dining experience begins where mine did, in her mother's 1940s meat-and-potatoes Chicago kitchen. Meatloaf was on the menu, along with spinach soufflé, wilted lettuce, and cranberry relish--along with memories of her father's proper attention to food ("No fried chicken--in fact, nothing that you picked up with your hands") and her mother's belief that the only way a kid learns to cook is by making a mess in the kitchen.

Marriage to a young doctor, moves to Missouri and Texas, and children of her own brought Alter a different awareness of food, and her mother-in-law's Jewish cooking began to influence her own. But after seventeen years of latkes, chopped liver, white lasagna, Texas caviar, baked brie, marinated goat cheese, and other "entertainment" dishes, the marriage ended and was succeeded by what she calls the "casserole years." In her new life, Alter was a single, working mother who moved out of her "doctor's wife's house" and into a place that she and the children could manage together. In that house, in that time of her life, the menus featured casseroles. Gorilla Casserole, for example ("you could feed twelve gorillas with it for less than $6); turkey hash; eggplant parmesan; and Judy's Mild and Tentative Chili. By that time (here's where the "books" in the title come in), Alter had embarked on two simultaneous careers: she became editor of the Texas Christian University Press and she began writing juvenile nonfiction, eventually authoring "about sixty" books for young people.

And now we have reached the "living alone and liking it" years, when a meatball sandwich for one is perfect, or a single salmon fillet or a Cobb salad or banana crepes--and plenty of cooking-for-one shortcuts. But Alter still cooks for crowds when her family comes to visit, for "cooking and passing along its joy" are an important part of her life, she says. That's certainly clear from the many family photographs that illustrate Cooking My Way.

This is a homey book that made me hungry for similar times in my own past and present; made me think about the many ways good food and good cooking bring our families together; and made me smile at the many tender moments when Alter's pleasure in her life and her work comes so clearly through on the page. Of course there are difficult times, too. But a life well lived (and food well cooked) takes the raw edges off. If you want to go home again and remember what your kitchens have been like over the years, read Judy Alter's fine memoir. And then get out the pots and pans and start cooking.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very interesting
As the title says, this is for dummies.I wasn't particularly impressed with the recipes or anything else in this book.It will be kept as a possible future reference, but we most likely won't use it much.Save your money and get a cute cookie book from Williams-Sonoma.We really use those types of cookbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very dense book with lots of information.
The book has tons of good information with terrific details. It supplies more information than any other cooking-for-kids books that I've ever seen--and I've seen plenty of them.I like the aspects of safety in thekitchen, shopping tips, nutrition, and dinning together--very important intodays world. These are things I work on with my 13 year old daughter asshe is just beginning to learn to cook. She no longer takes meals forgranted. She is also learning about health and nutrition, how to shop, andorganization while preparing a meal, and the clean up process, this bookhelps a lot, as it isn't nearly as boring as "mom". The gentlehumor and illustrations help, too.She actually took a long look at itwhich is a very positive sign. Additionally, my daughter is very fussy withher meals and school lunch is a nightmare. The book gives plenty of tipsand ideas which helped me jump a huge hurdle this school year. Thanks forwriting the book, Kate.mag (mom) & Holly (daughter)

5-0 out of 5 stars The world's greatest cookbook for kids and adults alike!
This cookbook is great for anyone with or without children. It is not your typical kid's cookbook. This is a great cookbook for anyone just learning to cook or for someone who had been cooking for years and islooking for easy recipes.I can't think of a single thing that Kate couldhave done to improve this book.I'm going to lobby for all the schoollibraries in our area to purchase this book.I believe "kids" ofall ages will benefit from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have a kid in your life? Run, don't walk, and buy this book!
I think I own every cooking book written for children.Honest. I have a stack of them.I am a Culinary Institue of America graduate.Teaching my children how to cook was top priority. There was just one problem with allthe books written so far...they were written for children. In a typicalchildren's cookbook there are great pictures and not much else that is ofany help to anyone with a budding child chef, or who just wants to teachkids how to cook. If you are a mom, nanny, single parent, grandmother, babysitter, etc., what you need is "Cooking With Kids forDummies".At last there is a book written for adults who really wantto delve into cooking with children, with recipes for the new millenium. All the bases are covered, from safety to recipes to ingredients to whatever you can think of.This book should be sent to every person with achild in their life! ... Read more

Love some of the suggestions I can't wait to mail a package of goodness and a mug to my g/c

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Book!
This is a great book.I bought this book and the Easy Microwave Desserts in a mug.You don't need both books, I have found out.The recipes are the same except for two.All recipes in the "Easy Microwave Desserts in a Mug" are in this book except, Sugar Plum cake and Almond peach bread. Those two are in here and not the other, although the other book has Amaretto Peach Bread instead of the Almond. The other book has more recipes and this one is like a smaller version of the other.I love the microwave books, it makes it much easier than the ones that you bake in the oven with your mug.I didn't find as many mugs that said they could go in the oven, where as most say they can go in a microwave. This book is simple to follow and very enjoyable. If I were to purchase these books knowing what I do about the recipies included, I would only buy the other book, which has most of these recipes and more.I would buy this one if I wanted to give as a gift to a child or teenager with a mug. They would really enjoy it. ... One of the things I liked best about this book is that every photograph doesn't reflect perfection. The picture of the shortbread includes one cracked piece. The fudge isn't all cut into perfect squares. I also like that the recipes are for the most part from scratch so the child is learning some actual cooking skills.

There is a solid index in the back of the book to help locate any recipe, along with a conversion chart for weights and measures so translation from American into Metric or Imperial is handy. I prepared the Coconut Ice candy and it was both easy and delicious. This book would make a great gift for a family, or any child that expressed an interest in cooking or baking.
