3-0 out of 5 stars Just for fun
Our family received this book as a gift. Each one of my children enjoyed read the book like a novel.Who would think of a cookbook as kid-friendly reading material? They liked the pictures and stories interspersed within the recipes. Many of the tips presented are the kind a grandma might teach a younger child. Tips like how to get young children safely involved in the kitchen including how to teach using a knife safely. In a world where people have vastly forgotten the meaning of family, books like this fill the gap.The traditions presented are mostly Rabbinic. The items shown on the cover are included in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes and ideas for the family
I bought this book a year ago and rediscovered it on the book shelf.I am so upset with myself for waiting so long to try these recipes with my kids!!!!

Today my daughter made her first challah using the recipe from this book and it turned out absolutely BEAUTIFUL!We took the advice of the author and used the third portion of dough to make some cinnamon bread for Shabbat morning breakfast but we all had to sample it when it came out of the oven.Oh yum! It is delicious. It's so good that there is a little less than half of it left for tomorrow.I had to hide it from the kids or it would all be gone!

We are also making the Friday Night Pot Roast recipe and the whole house smells so good.I use to buy a mixture in a jar for making my brisket (Bubbe's) but this tastes (I had to sample it) and smells just like the one in the jar.Well, actually it smells and tastes a little better because it's homemade. :)

One of the most enduring features of this book are the notes and memories presented before each recipe. You learn many interesting facts, history and the author's own family life. You feel like you are chatting with Joan Nathan over a cup of tea.

Each chapter has a history of the holiday and customs associated with each. Then come the wonderful recipes.

I love that the instructions are written clearly for adult AND child. Each recipe also notes where adult help is needed and what steps can be entrusted to a child.

This is a great book for making memories throughout the year.We are going to have a lot of fun eating our way through the holidays and creating memories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation of recipes for the holidays!
When Bon Appetit and other prestigous publications give this one rave reviews, that's a hint that you might have a "find"...and they are right. From Sabbath to Passover, there are recipes that are delicious, generally very easy to prepare and clearly explained. Although designed for children, I think thisone would be excellent for anyone who wants to become an excellent Jewish cook. It is like having a crash course in both the essentials and some special variations.

The book is extremely attractive and there are additions which make it special, such as suggested prayers, historical info about each holiday, great illustrations, etc.

Although the vast majority of the recipes are very simple, when one is a bit more complex, there are often step-by-step illustrations. An example would be Children's Cholent, where every single part of the process is pictured, right up to putting the dish in the oven.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that many of the recipes were unique or new to me.

ANOTHER PLUS: The author suggests which parts of the recipe might be appropriate and easy for a child to handle and which should be done with supervision.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource I use again and again.
I couldn't disagree more with the first review. With two small children, I rely heavily on this book as Jewish holidays come and go and have enjoyed many cooking experiences with my kids as a result.Furthermore, the recipes are consistently delicious! My kids and I have prepared Yemenite High Holiday Stew and Bread for Yom Kippur, Apple-Honey cupcakes, Hamantaschen, Aunt Lisl's Butter Cookies, and the ice-cream cupcake menorah featured on the cover, as well as a tender and delicious challah. There are many suggestions throughout for ways children can take part in the cooking, and often the menu suggestions accompanying each holiday have given me ideas of foods my children will actually eat.As a cook and an authority on Jewish cooking, Joan Nathan is no slouch; her contributions to the New York Times cooking section are significant and her adult-oriented cookbook "The Jewish Holiday Kitchen" is an exhaustive resource of Jewish dishes that is equally wonderful. In fact, I was reluctant to try this book because I doubted she could switch gears and write a children's cookbook that was really useable, but I contend she has done it!I can't imagine my cookbook library without this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars A remedial recipe book- very limited CRAFTY ideas
I would not even give this book one star.I was VERY disappointed with this book.I was expecting a CRAFTY kitchen book for childen based on the pictures on the front cover. This book primarily consists of traditional recipes for the holidays but gives instructions such as child mixes this.. adult stirs that.Example of receipes include: grape juice, hallah, chicken soup, matzah balls, pot roast, peeling a pamagranet, etc. There is nothing unique or special about these recipes. If you are buying it for your children- don't. and if you are buying it for the recipes- don't.There are many other better Jewish holiday cookbooks out there to choose from. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Kids' Cookbook!
I haven't posted many reviews but when I noticed this book had not received any reviews yet I felt compelled to add my own.

This is a wonderful book for teaching children to create their own gourmet dishes---ones they will enjoy, too! What I especially appreciate about the book is the premise that children will live up to the teachers' expectations and that they can truly create wonderful things in the kitchen with a little guidance. Too many children's cookbooks are very simplistic with seemingly boring cooking activities for children---how many times can children make a peanut butter sandwich? That's not the case with this book. After looking through it, and then using it to teach my own children, I understand why this cooking school in Aspen is so highly regarded.

I hope to teach my own children's cooking classes one day and this book with certainly be by my side!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures
This is one of those cool cook books that has pixctures all the way thru it... the prep, the stuff you use, the finished product. It is great for an older child (10 and up) to use to get cooking.
Recipes rely alot on cheese though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures, great tasting and fun to cook with your kids!
I bought this after running out of ideas to feed our vegetarian family that would also be interesting for our 3 year old. The best thing about this book is the pictures of the complete dish as well as the ingredients needed at the recipe side so that even children who are not reading yet (like ours) can still get excited and help out with the first step of hunting down all the ingredients needed.
Despite being vegetarian, the recipes are not overly hippy - you can get all of the ingredients at any supermarket and they actually include ingredients like butter, milk, cheese and salt. The finished dishes all taste great- also a hit at potlucks!

We also like the kid recipe projects like making a bread house or animal shaped breadsticks, a fun activity you can do with your kids and then be able to enjoy eating too!
The hardcover book also keeps nicer than paperbacks being around wet and messy ingredients.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Enough to be a Coffee Table Book
This book is overflowing with fantastic photography, reminiscent of those children's books with hundreds of photos of everyday things. If you are visually oriented like me and appreciate knowing exactly what your dish issupposed to look like when it's done, you`ll love this book.Step by stepinstructions with photos make creating these masterpieces easy even for theinexperienced in the kitchen.Just a word of warning:it isn't for theperpetually behind schedule and the fast-food obsessed. It's the kind ofcookbook that makes you want to learn to cook, and it deserves an hour setaside to create these lovely meals. If you can only reconstruct half thefabulous presentation, it'll be worth your time!In reality, most of therecipes only appear to be time-consuming; they are not. There are only ahandful of recipes that seem to be specifically aimed at pleasing thepreschool set.The book is meant for children of all ages, includingteens. The recipes will most definitely appeal to adults and olderchildren.I would be willing to bet you could even tempt a devoutmeat-eater with some of them. There is definitely an eggs and dairyemphasis, so it cannot be categorized as a vegan cookbook. It would make agreat gift for a friend or family member that wants to know what to cookfor you when you come to visit or as an introduction to vegetarian cooking. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not for kids
This book is a lie: It is not for kids. It has none of the important characteristics of a kids' cookbook. It tells what to do, but not how to do it, in instances where it would be unrealistic to expect a child to know already. Also it does not illustrate any of the steps. In fact, in the one recipe that does have a step illustrated, the photo is clearly inconsistent with both the photo of the final product and the written instructions. And the recipe called "Remy's Ratatouille" looks NOTHING like the ratatouille he makes in the movie. My daughter (and many other children, I expect) has no interest whatsoever in making a dish that is clearly not the dish from the movie. Yes, the actual dish is way too difficult for a child to make, but couldn't they come up with something that at least looks like the dish in the movie?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook! Glad I purchased.
I initially purchased this cookbook because my 5-year-old son, who loves the move Ratatouille, wanted me to make the "famous" ratatouillle dish for him. I have to confess that I initially had pretty low expectations for what would be included in this cookbook, and for how much I would actually use it, but I'm happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised. There are a lot of great recipes in this cookbook, and each one is very easy to make. Even better, though, is the fact that my son opens the cookbook daily to choose something new that he would like to make, and I can hardly put into words how much fun it is to cook together in the kitchen. My son is also an extremely picky eater, and this cookbook has encouraged him to want to try new things. It doesn't get much better than that!!

5-0 out of 5 stars What's cooking? A cookbook for Kids
This is a fun cookbook, with pictures and easy to read directions. Also, the recipes are in three levels of difficulty.
If you like Ratatouille, this will be a fun book to use with your family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook
This is really a great cookbook. We received it free with the purchase of the movie and even though we love the movie, I think we have enjoyed the cookbook more.My 12yr old daughter and I have made several things and look forward to making more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun cookbook for the whole family
I gave this cookbook to my sister-in-law who has 2 daughters 6 and 12.The whole family, even dad, has made something from the cookbook, and they rave about the food that comes out of it.They are particularly fond of the breads and pastries.Anyone can cook!Enjoy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book for kids
This is a fun book for kids.It was less detailed than I would have liked, but if you have a parent who knows what they are doing there are a lot of great ideas in this book.My kids love it, and I will keep looking and practicing to put some of these ideas and projects into play. There are many more ideas than just can cooking.Cooking on a rock, in a paper cup, in a pit, and in a homemade solar oven are also included.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't let the title fool you
I remember cooking meals in a can when I was little, so I was excited to order this book for my husband, who is our son's Cubmaster. However I was disappointed (and maybe I didn't read the reviews close enough) to find that there are very few actual recipes for cooking in a can.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute, and useful too
This is a really cute and useful book.It has a lot of color illustrations to make it very attractive for a child to read. Also, the concept of cooking over your campfire -- or over several different types of home-made grills that they teach you how to make -- is fun and different. This actually seems to be book two of a series -- the first looks like it's called "Cooking on a Stick, Campfire recipes for kids" by Linda White.

Anyway, the chapters are as follows:

Planning and Packing (make a cooking apron)

Setting up Camp (with a craft for making a banner for your site)

Campires (make a wood carrier out of a sweatshirt, and make some different kinds of fire starters)

Cooking on Outdoor Stoves (make a tin-can grill, canyon sandwiches with English muffins, recipe for asparagus "forests")

Cooking in a (full-sized) garbage can (make a garbage can cooker, make a small "buddy" burner, pizza soup recipe, apple stampede recipe [which is just apple sauce])

Cooking in a paper bag or paper cup (recipe for rise 'n' shine breakfast [bacon and eggs in a bag], chocolate on a stick)

Cooking in Leaves and other foods (bean burgers recipe, bloomin' muffins [muffins you cook in orange peels! how cool!]

Hot rock cooking (sunrise toast and hot rock chicken)

Pit Cooking (fondue and cake)

Solar oven cooking (veggie pie and cookies with granola)

Spit cooking (mushrooms and kebobs)

Dutch oven cooking (stew and cake)

The recipes seem to be well explained and simple enough for kids who are the correct age to actually read the book.(Amazon lists ages 4-8, which from the kid-style illustrations seems right on.)The gimmick of cooking in the woods is fun and safety instructions are included and explained. For example, they explain what makes a good rock to cook on!And they include a long list of supplies and safety equipment, even explaining how to properly -- and safely -- douse a fire. They also cover "what is safe drinking water?" and how to build the perfect campfire.

For those of you who are Family Fun magazine fans, (I appreciate their crafts and clever ideas), for camping fans, and for cooking fans who would like to try something new with their kids, this book is a fun addition to your library. ... Read more

Since I didn't know who Don or Deirdre Imus were when I read this, I am writing about the book itself. I liked the story about the ranch as I didn't know anything about it. I like the fact that the book was part story and part recipes. I haven't tried the recipes yet but they look pretty good. I also liked the writings from the children and would be interested in reading a book just about the ranch and its effect on families' lives.

Only one critique: while the book professes to be a book about healthy vegan eating, eggs are not included in a vegan diet and this is not even addressed until about half-way through the book (and then the inclusion of eggs in this "vegan" cookbook is justified by the author). Also, refined sugar and white flour (unbleached or not) are very unhealthy, especially for sick children. Very healthy and tasty food can be made with whole grains, using fruits as sweeteners.

Otherwise, I think this couple should be applauded for their dedication to providing such an important, unique experience for these children. How many others can say their lives have touched others in such an important way.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful and informative
I've enjoyed this book for 5 years and surprised that I didn't write a review.

It is a delight to read, funny and very informative. It helped us years ago gradually change to eating organic with such delicious recipes. It's a gorgeous book to own, written by an expert and perfect example of how we should live our lives.

The ranch inspires all who visit, and it'll inspire you to read about it.Their products are top of the line items and 100% of the profits are helping little kids with cancer have a meaningful and learning experience at Imus Ranch. You'll be supporting a worthy cause and receiving a book you'll treasure.

3-0 out of 5 stars Less chatter
There are good vegetarian recipes in this book.I like the idea that they give you a feel for the ranch and some of the stories are very good although they get to be the same old same old by the end of the book.I would have liked more recipes and less chatter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every Penny!!
This is a superb collection of recipes. . . and best of all it benefits a great cause!I was not aware of The Imus Ranch until I learned that the nephew of a dear friend had a super experience there. I bought it for The Crabiless Crab Cakes recipe that my friend had enjoyed, and as she promised me, they are indeed delicious!!

4-0 out of 5 stars vegan lifestyle
Good selection of vegan recipes for anyone wanting to test a vegetarian lifestyle. For those who want information about "green" cleaning and living there are pages at various points with helpful information.A little too much infomercial for the ranch but that is probably to be expected as it is was written to be a fundraiser. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Cooking with Kids
This is a fun book, the recipes are easy and they are organized by what the kids do and what the adults do. It's nice that the kids do most of the cooking, the adults work with the hot stove or oven, and things like cutting meats, but the kids do just about all of the cooking. The only downside is that there aren't really any seasonings in the recipes, they tend to be a bit on the bland side, and we LOVE flavor!! However, it is a great book to teaach kids cooking, and, as a bonus, if you have a family member on a restricted diet, chances are there's something in here for them!! ... Read more
