5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute and a rare find
I know, this is "just" a little sticker book. However, I love that this was a great sticker book for boys! A rare find, something I can slip in my purse and be ready to entertain on little guy. It seems his twin sister has all the fun and he ends up having to settle for "girl focused" stickers. This allows him to happily dress the boy in sports clothing rather than try to have fun dressing some fairy or princess. Love it! ... Read more

Literature-Based Reading Activities is distinguished by discussion of the theoretical and research bases supporting all activities. Numerous activities and examples of their application to a variety of genres are provided. One of the text's strengths is that activities are generic in nature so that they may be applied and adapted to a variety of books. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Activities!
This is a wonderful companion to The Story of the World!I use it almost daily in our homeschool and the girls can't wait!It is full of coloring pages to reinforce the "stories" being told.It has a map worksheet for every chapter to reinforce the geography being taught. There are also TONS of activites to bring history alive which, in my opinion, are what helps my girls remember their lessons long-term!I would definitely reccommend buying this book as a companion to the text itself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for our family
Great book, a must if you are using the Story of the World Book.Comes with lists of other books to read for more in depth study, hands on crafts and projects for kids of all ages.We just did the first activity of a mock archeological dig and my kids loved it (ages 6, 4, and 2).Having fun while learning at the same time?Who would've thought it was possible!

2-0 out of 5 stars Biffed it on the Jesus section
I saw this in a book store and wanted to see what it said about Jesus.Lots of false assertions.1. It says that Jesus was popular.2. It says that the Romans were afraid of Jesus. This is utter non-sense.Jesus was a barely a blip on their radar screen. He only became important to the Romans after the church grew and threated the idol trade and Christians refused to worship the Emperor.3. It says the Romans killed Jesus on a charge of treason. This is also non-sense.Pilate wanted to let Jesus go but the Jews pushed the issue and chose for Pilate to release Barabbas instead of Jesus. They even accepted moral responisbility for it.
Matthew 27:21-26
21The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.
22Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.
23And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
24When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
25Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
26Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus actual arrest warrant is preserved in the historical record as well and it clearly shows the Jews arrested him to appear before the Sanhedrin on the charge of blasphemy.

This maybe politically correct because the Romans are not around to complain so I will complain for them. This is either outright anti-Roman or anti-Italian bigotry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Accompaniment
I bought this book with the "text" book and test booklet. I love the activities in this book! The oral questions are very good in reinforcing what has been read. I usually ask the review questions while my daughter is coloring the included pictures or maps. I highly recommend this activity book as it is an enjoyable way to study a very interesting curriculum.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tiny error on Page 33.
For those of you who use the book, there seems to be a minor error on Page 33.The question asked is: "The Chinese first settled in many small villages.Do you remember the name of the emperor who united them into one empire?"The answer provided in italics is "Huang Di", which translated, is not a name but a title, and in this case, "sovereign emperor".

Actually, Emperor Qin Shi Huang, born as Ying Zheng in 259 BC, was the son of the king of the Qin State.Ying Zheng unified and subjugated all the states like Han, Zhao, Wei, Chu, Yan and Qi by the power of the Qin State, thereafter building the first feudal and centralised empire in Chinese history in 221 BC.Today, he is famous for the Great Wall and the Terracotta warriors and horses (even in Epcot, Orlando Disneyworld). When Ying Zheng unified China, he considered his achievement surpassing the legendary "San Huang (three emperors)" and "Wu Di (five sovereigns)", so he created a new title for himself: "Huangdi" together with "Shi (the first)", giving rise to the name "Qin Shi Huang" or "Qin Shi Huangdi", which means he was the first emperor of China. Later generations called him "Qin Shi Huang".

Very often, in Mandarin Chinese, the name comes before the title, unlike in the West, where one would call the monarch of England, for instance, "Queen Elizabeth" (not "Elizabeth Queen") which is probably what caused the confusion. To some, this might seem like splitting hairs, but if you speak Mandarin, it is like saying that the name of the emperor who united China is "Mr."I think very highly of this book for its layout, coverage and engaging activities and hope my entry has been helpful.

Product Description
One World, One Day uses exquisite, moving photographs and Barbara Kerley’s poetic text to convey a simple yet profound concept: we are one global family. This is a sophisticated concept book, presented as an elegant picture book with contributions from top international photographers.

This beautiful photo book follows the course of one day in our world. Sunrise to sunset is captured in the essential things we all do daily, wherever we live in the world, and in the different ways we do them. The first meal of the day will take on a whole new dimension for American kids as an American pancake breakfast is contrasted with porridge in North Korea and churros in Spain.

At the end, each image is reprinted as a thumbnail and accompanied by a detailed caption. Selected images feature photographers’ notes that share the thoughts and methodology involved in the making of the picture and reveal fascinating behind-the-scenes information. The photographers reflect on how the pictures might resonate within the theme of the global family. Such reflections are rooted in the life experiences of these well-traveled professionals. Their global viewpoints, in tandem with Barbara Kerley’s powerful message, set an ideal example for all future world citizens. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One World, One Day
I read this aloud to my kids. Then they wanted to individually page through the book and look at the pictures. Then they wanted to look at the last few pages of the book which tell where each picture was taken. It was bedtime so I made them go to sleep, but I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow they're eager to look on a globe to find where each picture is from.Excellent photos, and although the faces and places look different, the book emphasizes similarities in our day-to-day lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Global Connections
"At dawn, as the sun slips over the horizon, kids around the world get up, wash up, and celebrate a new day." Barbara Kerley has combined Simple text with dynamic photographs to create a powerful statement of global connectedness. Based on Kerley's Peace Corp Volunteer experience in the early `80s and continued travels since then, she has been "convinced ...that all of us around the world have much in common, and that the more we can embrace our commonality, the more tolerant we can be of our differences."

This book with its divergent compilation of photographs and minimal text is a great read-a-loud even with the youngest of children, yet also provides in the appendix additional information about each photo for the curious child or adult. Each reference has a thumbnail photo as well as a page number reference (which is great since the book has no page numbers?) There is also a world map giving the locale of each photograph.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get This Book!
I cannot think of a better way to express how I feel about it, other than to urge you to buy it or borrow it NOW.It is informative, educational, poignant, heart wrenching, jolly, lighthearted--the photos are beyond words.

To actually see how children around the globe spend their day--just amazing.it will make the American youngster sit up and take an interest, that's for sure.

I love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a stunning book of photographs showing how children around the world spend their day!
All around the world children begin to rise after the sun comes up.They get up out of their beds, wash themselves "and celebrate a new day."Mmmmm, it's time for breakfast. The children have many different kinds of breakfasts to start their day. Some have porridge, some have pancakes while others have churros or toast."Hot sweet tea with plenty of milk" is a good way to top it off.Eight little girls with smiley impish faces are getting ready to head to school. Some children only have to walk a short way to school while others have to cross a river using a cable.Riding a bus or hopping on a bus is a very easy way to get to school!

At school it is time to get serious. Children around the world read, write, have music lessons, write math problems on the board, work on their science projects and dabble in arts and crafts. Of course everyone seems to love recess and lunch. In the afternoon there's more learning to do and then "kids stand up, clean up and head for home any way they can." Some children aren't done when school is out. They have to work, play, do homework, finish chores and then think. . .about "what's for dinner?"Of course everyone has something that's a bit different than the next person. When the sun sets it's time for family and then time to get to bed.Sleep well, for the next day will come soon!

This is a beautiful pictorial book that captures the daily lives of children around the world.Despite their differences, on some level they are all alike. As the author states, "Kids go to school, they play, they spend time with their families. This book represents one day, from sunrise to sunset, around the world-a day we share together."The photographs are stunning and very appealing. They capture everything from impish grins to beaming smiles (no crying here!).In the back of the book each photograph is reproduced and has a location and most have a "story" underneath. There is also a map showing where the photographs were taken. This is a book that school children will be fascinated with. How did you spend your school days? ... Read more

My son was really looking forward to starting his summer bridge book this year. Overall, the activities are just the right level for K-1. The book gets more challenging as you get to the end, which is perfect to get ready for school by the end of the summer. And I think this version is an improvement over the previous version--more varied activities incorporating social sciences in with the math and reading. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A remarkably perceptive commentary on early learning
In The Power of Fantasy in Early Learning, Jenny Tyrrell's second book, she vividly describes the significant role that inanimate characters - a bear and a doll in this case - play in early learning in the classroom. This is the story of an experienced teacher educator with remarkable perception, who has observed children's literacy and imagination as well as motivation and self-esteem flourish through the development of very real relationships with fantasy figures. In this book, she stresses the importance of the everyday laughter of the children she taught, which enabled them to relax and enjoy the learning process to the full.

Product Description
"Did you have a good day?" is a question thousands of parents ask of their pre-schoolers at the end of a child care day. But as the children are too young to adequately describe their experiences, they are unable to tell their parents what they really want or need to know. This book helps to do just that by examining the issue of quality in child care from a child's point of view. The author introduces a group of fictional pre-school-age children and contrasts their experiences through a hypothetical day in each of two very different child care situations. Although fictional, the characters and incidents described are based on real observations of children and teachers in poor and good quality child care environments. The events and interactions described are interpreted for the reader in annotated sections that provide extensive references to current research regarding each area discussed. "Good Day/Bad Day" represents an attempt to consider the growing body of research on child care quality in a new light. In this book, Beardsley has synthesized her own observation of children in a variety of child care situations with those research findings that are vitally relevant to recognizing and promoting quality early programmes. This book should be of interest for teachers teacher educators, administrators, policymakers, advocates or social science researchers, as well as parents curious to discover what actually goes on in their child's day. ...
