5-0 out of 5 stars Creative Themed Activities
As a teacher and mother of two, I owned a large collection of children activity books and was extremely pleased with my purchase of "And the Cow Jumped Over the Moon".Each featured rhyme or song is grouped with Related Songs, Chants and Rhymes, Follow Up Questions to promote discussion, Language Enrichment Ideas, Extension Activities, and Outdoor Play or Music and Movement Activities. All activities are themed to go with the featured rhyme. Not only are several creative activities given, but you can also use them as a spring board for other activities of your own.Whether you are having a day of themed activities at home to brighten a Monday afternoon, or a Day Care Provider who is trying to create a fun classroom curriculum, this book is a wonderful resource. The activities are easy to do, appropriate for young toddlers, and physical, emotional, or cognitive development skills are clearly identified.Pam Schiller and Thomas Moore's other book "Where is Thumbkin" is similarly designed, but specifically geared for older children (4-6). ... Product Description
A journal is a popular way for children and young adults to contemplate many aspects of their lives. This unique diary, designed especially for children ages nine and up, helps kids articulate their personal experience of art and museums.

My Museum Journal combines fine art with stimulating writing and sketching activities which encourage children to record and understand their art impressions. A self-portrait by Edgar Degas provides inspiration for an activity entitled "Who Am I?" David Hockney's photographic collage Pearblossom Hwy introduces the topic of travel. A European tapestry depicting a fantastical scene from China beckons youngsters to let their imagination fly away to distant places. Other themes in the journal include heroes, family, growing up, games, friends, dreams, and celebrations. Each topic includes an introduction, an artwork thematically related to the text, and a mix of writing and sketching activities intended to inspire creative drawing and writing in the shape of poetry, dialogue, and illustrations. Extra blank pages for writing and sketching and a section on visiting museums wrap up this handsome volume. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading, Writing Activities
This book is a pre-k teacher and pre-k mom must have.It is packed with truely great ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to teach reading -- while having fun!
When I picked up this book, I did not expect it to be so comprehensive in teaching reading and writing. This a small, but powerful book. I expected a few activities as a supplement to other methods. The activities use all five senses and are fun. They incorporate dancing, singing, and sometimes eating. As another reviewer wrote, this may be the only book you may ever need to teach reading!

I have a Masters Degree in Education, with focus on literacy and learning disabilities. I have read many books on whole language vs. phonics instruction, but none that incorporated both as well as this one does.

The book is divided into 7 sections, each one building on the other as they master it. Within each section, is a list of supplies needed for the activities. This is the only book that I have read that I really have all the supplies necessary to start right away. Then, the actual activities. At the edge of each activity page, there is a box that the author has given some more wonderful information. She has a Reading Zone with books to read to the child to expand on the activities. There is Teaching Time that explains the concept development that the activities focus on. The last, but very important item the author included, is State Standards Say which tells what most states expect of children to know when they are tested in reading at school.

Here are the 7 sections (just a small sample of activities included):

Let's Talk About It (prereading skills)
make a collage, make a sequence crown
teaches to identify and sort words, extend vocabulary, following directions, connect to real life experiences

Start with Sounds
rhyme time, treasure hunt, monster munch
recite and produce rhyming words, listen for phonemes in words

Print Power!
rainbow writing, autograph book, word necklace
distinguish letters from words, learn that print provide information in everyday setting

Now I Know My ABC's
eating the alphabet, milk-cap mania, alpha-pet
learning upper and lower case alphabet, sequencing letters

Phonics Fun
alphabet crowns, word puzzlers, phonics gizmos
learning consonant and vowel sounds, as words change so do sounds

Write On!
office signs, business cards, stationery, it's in the mail, spell-a-phone
identify types of everyday printed materials

Beyond the Tale
dazzling diagrams, wonder webs, teeny-tiny theater
learn to use fiction and non-fiction material, retell stories

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book Full of Great Activities!
This book is so cute is it filled with really fun learning activites. We use it for Kindergarten homeschool.Very fun and educational!

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect Early Literacy resource
As a librarian working with parents to help their preschoolers develop pre-reading skills, I have recommended this book hundreds of times. The activities in this book are fun, easy, inexpensive ways to develop all the essential skills children need to master before they can learn to read.Activities include letter knowledge, rhyming, word families, recognizing environmental print, and other important pre-reading skills. Most can be done with no special materials, or with paper plates, magazine pictures, and other materials you probably have lying around the house.Hauser is tuned in to how children learn and how they play; activities are age-appropriate and avoid the "drill & kill" approach by keeping activities fun and filled with child appeal. The first (and possibly only) resource you need to raise a child who's ready to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source for an Early Childhood Curriculum.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mostly busy work....
This is one of the few products from Evan-Moor that I have not been pleased with. The emerging-reader stories are very simple and uninteresting, which makes the questions and activities uninteresting as well.If a child is not comprehending what he or she is reading, it is difficult to see how these dull readings and exercises will improve that.

If you are trying to improve your child's reading comprehension, I recommend reading Jim Treleases's "Read Aloud Handbook" and reading to your child as often as you can, and talking about what you read.

Next encourage your child to read to you, and give him some good emergent reader books, like the "I Can Read" series, or of course the appealing "I Can Read It All by Myself" series of books which includes Dr. Seuss, or any beginning reading book that INTERESTS your child.Talk about what you read, but in a facilitative, curious way, not an interrogative way.

On the other hand, if you need busy work for some reason, then this book is as good as any.My daughter did a couple of lessons in this book during the few times my son needed extra help and I didn't have anything handy for her to do. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars COMICS SHOULD BE IN COLOR
Part of my disappointment is that I didn't look at the inside of the book to find out that the comics
were in black and white. I guess I should have realized that because it does say that they comics
are reproducible.Very disappointing that they were not in color.Have not given it to the grandchildren yet but I bought other historical comics that are in color so I think this one will be a disappointment. It was to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grandson reads
This American history comic is a good introduction to history for my home-schooled 7 year old grandson. He certainly will read it - he really likes these illustrated books. He was very enthusiastic when he said thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Info but. . .
This book is VERY informative and complete. But, the description as "comic Books" is not exactly right. I would have bought it anyway but it is an exaggerated description. . . It is more halfway like a comic book item.Just trying to help.
