Ho Hum Projects
I thought the patterns wereuninspired and very difficult to do on- the- go because of the charts.I confess I was in the mood to buy knitting books and picked this one up because of the "frequently purchased together" tag.In the future, I will be a bit more careful.

Good designs
i love the designs in here, there are some fun twists on classics. i do not like that all the patterns are gaged for 2-4 size needles. it is really hard on my hands to use needles that small, i wish there were some with a larger gage. it really is a fun book though.

Whimsical and Practical Patterns
Knitting 24/7 contains some fun and very useable patterns.Both the practical and whimsical are included which make for a good combination.Looking through the book, I especially liked the beautiful 'Modern Pillow'.It is knit with two colors and has a geometrical design in diamonds and triangles.The 'Arrowhead Kneesocks' are just the thing to wear with a short skirt or even a longer one.It is knit with a twisted rib pattern but has the look of cables.The 'Spiral Tweed Cloche' looks nice and warm.The added button gives it pizazz.Perhaps my favorite pattern in the book is the classic 'Elemental Pullover'.It is "minimal and elegant", a seamless and yoked project that is perfect to wear just about anywhere.It's the kind of sweater I can imagine knitting in a cashmere or alpaca blend.It calls for size 4 (U.S.) needles - that's what gives it the elegant look in addition to its design.The 'Smocked Lace Scarf' is lovely.My only criticism of the design is that it is knit in halves that need to be sewn together.I don't really see the point of that.I also don't like charts, which this pattern utilizes.The 'Pinstripe Slouch Hat' is a variation on a classic.It is reversible and the design divides the hat into columns of stitches.Again, it's a neat variation on a classic pattern.If you like to knit with small stitches and enjoy multi-color knitting, the 'Fleur de Lys Hat' is perfect for you.It is knit in grey and white and looks like a flurry of snowflakes.I intend to knit this project for myself to wear next winter.The 'Heilo Mittens' appear warm and the patternlooks easy if you know how to do two-color knitting.It calls for Dale of Norway Heilo yarn which is one of my favorites.As a book lover, I can't resist the 'Sea Crest Bookmark' which is knit with size 2 (U.S.) needles.It has the appearance of gentle waves.

All in all, this book has something for everyone and includes a lot of patterns, most of them appealing.I'm giving it a '4' because the book uses charts without accompanying line by line patterns for lace and also because there isn't much included about techniques or resources.Otherwise, it's a great book to have if you want to add to your pattern collection.For me, the book is worth buying for the 'Elemental Pullover' alone.Happy knitting!

Talented Designer's Ho-Hum Collection of Knitted Accessories
The title of this pattern collection, KNITTING 24/7, refers to the book's general theme of finding time to knit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week--rather than to patterns for garments that are suitable for wearing at various times of the day or week.

The book's theme is expressed in double-page display pages for "A.M.", "P.M.", and "Weekend".For example, the layout for "A.M." suggests that the knitter "sneak in a few rows --before breakfast . . . --while coffee brews . . . --on the subway . . . --while computer warms up . . ." and so forth.None of the suggestions seem particularly original or useful, as most busy but serious knitters will have thought of these things already.

In keeping with the theme, nearly all of the patterns are for "portable" projects: colorwork mittens, scarves, twisted-stitch-pattern socks, mitts, hats, an oversize shrug, a stole, a shawl, a purse, a market bag, a pillow, a bookmark, and slippers.However, it is questionable whether a project that requires a chart is actually a "portable" project, and whether such a project can be knit successfully when the knitter is "sneaking in a few rows" while standing in line or waiting for coffee to brew.Thus the theme seems forced--simply an excuse to present yet another collection of accessory patterns as something new or different.

Having misunderstood the title of the book (which I ordered sight unseen because I generally love Veronik Avery's designs), I was particularly disappointed to find that the book includes only four garment projects: a skirt, a "grandfather vest", a mesh tank, and an "elemental pullover".The "elemental pullover" is far and away my favorite pattern.It is a lovely classic design for a basic long-sleeved mock turtle pullover, and it is exactly the kind of thing that I expect to find in a Veronik Avery collection.The remaining patterns are all attractive and carefully put together, but are rather ho-hum.

Knitters looking for classic Veronik Avery garment designs should consider purchasing the excellent KNITTING CLASSIC STYLE: 35 MODERN DESIGNS INSPIRED BY FASHION'S ARCHIVES, which is also available from Amazon.

Love It!
Veronik Avery is my absolutely favorite designer and I been waiting with great anticipation to see her new book. Got it today and cannot put it down. The projects reflect Veronik's impeccable taste and are interesting and very wearable.Others gave a pretty good description so I will not repeat. These projects are what many would by happy to get as a gift.Veronik's patterns are the ones I come back to; their beauty is timeless. beautiful
This is a beautiful book. I'd love it even if I didn't knit! The pictures are beautiful and the writing is good.

Dud designs from big name designers
Even big name designers, have dud designs.This book seems to be a collection of duds from many well known designers.Ann Budd, Jo Sharp, Debby Bliss etc. -- have published wonderful designs but you wouldn't know it from this collection.

There are online free versions for items similar to most of the patterns in this book.Besides, who needs to buy a book to get a 'pattern' for a 3 in by 96 in scarf made by knitting a garter stitch piece 5 stitches wide on 19mm needles????

Most of the projects would require several weekends to knit so the title is somewhat misleading.

Spare the pages wasted on butter cookie and hot chocolate recipes - if I want this, I'll buy a cook book for heaven's sake!Other tree-wasters include how to make and drink tea, how to take a bath (I kid you not!!) - and 12 glossy pages of ugly finger puppet patterns!!!!!

Oh, and be sure to mark the occasional pattern that you DO like -- the projects are not listed in the table of contents!!

The trivia lists - movies with knitting scenes and knitting in literature do have some curiosity value.

There is little to inspire here -- I bought my copy less than $6 from a remainder book seller thinking that there must be something worthwhile because of the positive reviews here and the 'name' designers.I should have bought yarn instead.

Good variety of projects
This book has a good variety of projects. Most seem easy to do from simple mittens to easy sweaters, even some fun knitting projects you can make for kids. I especially love the flower petal wash cloths.

A Keeper for all Skill Levels
This is a wonderful book that would make a great gift for any knitter, but especially for the serious beginner. It contains some projects that are dead-easy (such as the Uptown Scarf and the Fluffy Lapghan) some for people looking to move into the intermediate zone (such as the mitten patterns or Backgammon bag) and some more advanced (such as the felted/fulled market bag and cache-coeur top). It also contains patterns that would be great for someone looking to do lace for the first time.

Though there is no "learn to knit" section, the patterns are well-written for easy reading, and there are excellent notes to help knitters with the tricky bits (including instructions on how to felt/full wool, along with the basics of choosing yarn for felting/fulling projects). Basically anyone could do any of these, given enough time and patient reading, and for that it is an excellent book for the "intermediate beginner" looking to stretch her (or his) knitting ability.

On the subject of time, whether or not one could complete all of these projects in a weekend, as the title seems to suggest, is largely dependant on the individual's skill level and knitting speed. As an Intermediate knitter, I could probably knit about half of these in a weekend (and probably more if I actually had the weekend to do nothing BUT knit). A beginner could probably pick from ten of the fifty projects, including the flower washcloths, the Uptown Scarf, the Checkers Tote (this would make a great gift for a family of air travelers, by the way, along with the backgammon tote, given the new security regulations which leave one seriously limited as to the types of entertainment one can bring aboard), and others. An advanced knitter could probably do most if not all of the projects in a weekend. At any rate, the feel and theme of the book certainly gives it a weekend appeal, so the title is appropriate no matter what your skill level.

The book's weekend appeal is enhanced by beautiful full-colour photos throughout and interesting sidebars, including (but certainly not limited to) a section on the proper way to make tea, a selection of movies that reference knitting, and a delicious hot chocolate recipe. Peppered with knitting and lifestyle quotes from people like St. Francis of Assisi, Jean-Jaques Rousseau, and Virginia Woolf, this book is a pleasure to read, even when you're not looking for a project.

I suppose this book would not be for the person who is seriously pressed for time or who doesn't have the patience to read project notes, but if you're the kind of knitter who believes half the fun of knitting is in taking some time away to enjoy the simpler things in life, this may be exactly the book you need!

Curse my library's renewal policy!
If it weren't for my library's 3 week renewal policy, I would keep this book FOREVER!!!!! This is probably my favorite knitting book of all time! I think I would knit just about every single pattern in here, and make the hot coco recipe a thousand times. ... Read more

One of my favorites, but a little rushed!
Although I generally enjoy Sefton's cozy series, this particular edition felt rushed.I generally read these for the consistency and the "warm, cozy" feeling.Skein of the Crime left me wanting and wishing that the writer had taken the characters in a different direction.I will definitely continue to read Sefton's work in hopes that this was a slipped stitch!

Disappointing!
I own this entire series, and can't seem to stop myself.However, I only truly enjoyed the first 5 books. However, this current book made me angry that I had spent money on it.Ms. Sefton's writing style has always been quite simplistic, but that's okay.Sometimes I just want an easy, pleasurable read.This one struck me as belonging more in the juvenile fiction category.I'm tired of the endless talk of coffee, the ridiculous relationship between Kelly and Steve (Really, she wouldn't even admit she liked him in the earlier books, and then suddenly they were living together.Now, suddenly they barely speak.).Also, I realize that this is fiction, but Kelly's interference in criminal investigation would probably land her in jail in real life, along with the authorities who freely share information with her.

I think I'm done with this series.

Okay but not great
I have liked all the books in this series.This, however, wasn't as interesting and seemed to drag on before anything developed.So, it was easy to lose interest in it.Nevertheless I will probably buy the next one to see if it gets any better and to see what happens between Kelly and Steve.Even the knitting pattern in the book wasn't of particular interest to me- maybe if they had printed the pattern Kelly was using to knit her hat it would have been more compatible with the book.

A good knitting mystery
I love reading Maggie Sefton knitting mysteries including recipes and patterns.I am looking foward to reading everyone one of her books I can get.

A Great Book for First Time Knitters
I just learned to knit over the summer and have found this book invaluable so far.Besides teaching the knitting basics it provides projects of progressive difficulty to each each knitter different techniques.It's best to follow the book from start to finish, even if you already are familiar with the technique taught, and when finished you have enough squares to make a pillow or start an afghan.

Fearless Knitting
This knitting workbook is just the thing if you haven't knitted for a while. Many good suggestions and clear directions. It motivated me to get my old prodjects out and get started again.

Wished it worked for me
I was so excited to get this book. The other reviews led me to believe it was just what I, a fairly new and not very adventurous knitter, needed. For what it is worth, I have already successfully knitted numerous washcloths of varying patterns and using multiple colors,scarves of different types, and a very pretty afghan. I do have some facility with the basics of knitting. So far, I have tried two of the book's squares. I frogged the first, but finally managed to get it right (it was the checkerboard). I have just now frogged a second square, the bordered diagonal garter square, but will not be attempting it again for sometime.

The problem with this book is two-fold: First, the author gives so many directions in between the various rows that you lose sight of where you are (yes, I mark rows on a piece of paper). I know she is trying to be helpful with all the explanations, but it is such overkill than you can't find the pattern. Simply trying to follow along becomes an exercise in perseverance. It would have been clearer to have a summary of the whole pattern at the end of the project or in an index. I actually typed out the row-by-row directions for the checkerboard, condensing the excess verbiage that obscured the pattern fundamentals. Secondly, the illustrations that accompany specific techniques - such as an ssk - are not very clear. Photos would have been better. I found myself going online for more explicit illustrations or a video.

The goals of this book are admirable and I truly wanted it to help me progress to more complicated projects. I'mglad it has helped others. For now, it will go on one of my bookshelves alongside other nearly useless instruction manuals.

Must have addition to existing or beginning knitting library
Having knitted for over 30 years, I am very selective regarding additions to my knitting reference library.I came across this lovely book while searching Amazon.com for a visual aide for a new student. Being a visual learner myself, I was immediately drawn to the step-by-step pictorals and the wisdom shared in the author's simple, concise, and no-nonsense style.The reader is assumed to know the basic knit and purl stitch, but Ms. Seiffert gives such lovely practice blocks from basic to advanced patterns.Her wit, sense of humor and honesty put me at ease at once.This is not filled with patterns for handbags, sweaters, etc., but of blocks ending in small projects to improve knitting skills.Best of all, the workbook is spiral bound!I have read and re-read this small gem and have decided to make many of the blocks myself, combining them for either scarves, shawls or afghans.This is a refreshing compilation of "need-to-know" steps as one progresses in the joys of knitting.Whether a knitting veteran or wanting to advance beyond knit and purl, this will be your "go-to" book. This is one publication worth your money.It is a "must buy" and a pleasure from cover to cover.Finally, this is the book to consider giving, along with a pair of needles, and a skein of yarn, to that special someone with whom you want to share the love of our craft.

Fabulous book
Wow, wow, wow! I've read a lot of books of this type over the years, but this is really the best ever. Not only is the information in this book spectacular, but the projects it recommends will serve to enhance and expand any knitter's skillset. I teach knitting and crochet - including a "fix your knitting" class and this book is now THE book that I recommend to my students. Why did I wait so long to get this book?!
This is an amazing book for those who want to expand their knitting know-how and those who want to start designing their own items.

I just received this book in the mail and I am still busy looking at all the *pretty pictures* and daydreaming about what I can make from this.

I did also get the 3rd edition and I just wanted to say that they are completely different and I am planning on getting the other two in the series!

Worth every penny
This is the book you get when you've stuck with knitting long enough to see the possibility of fluency. This is the book you get to reward yourself for other, lighter books foregone. And this is the book you get when you're feeling a little too cocky about your ability to do things with a few sticks and skeins.

I'm looking forward to collecting all the Treasuries, one at a time.

That bit extra
I have a number of knitting pattern books including Barbara's first Treasury of Knitting Patterns.What I like about Barbara's books is that not only are the images clear but she gives lots of information about the pattern, how the knitted fabric behaves and suggestions for use.This is invaluable and saves lots of trial and error on the reader's part.This is a very valuable knitting resource.

Excellent scarf book.Except the type font is WAY TOO SMALL!!!!I'm very glad I didn't buy this one to give to my mother, she'd never be able to read it. What were they thinking??

Fun, unique and challenging patterns
Wow!Soon as I started thumbing through this book I wanted to go to my huge yarn stash (or better yet, yarn store) to get started on on one of these beautiful, distinctive patterns.There is a wide variety of patterns, and each provide detailed instructions.The great thing is these scarves use challenging techniques that are greets fun to try and you end up with a scarf that is fun to wear and a stand-out for showing the world there are still new ways to show individual style.Be prepared though - some patterns require multiple sets of needles.

What great scarves!
Have made three of these scarves so far - all for me! Eventually maybe I can bear to make a gift. Directions are clear and they are interesting to make.

New Dimensions for Knitted Scarves
This book by Lynne Barr includes patterns for 27 scarves.
There is a 10-page instruction for various knitting techniques used in the projects, complemented by one page with knitting terminology and abbreviations. In the introduction Lynne Barr describes the background story of the book and her interest in space in architecture, which had a great influence on the shape of the various scarves.

The instructions for the individual scarves are accompanied by further illustrations and/or pictures on which more complicated knitting techniques are visualized in great detail.

The book has been carefully conceived, the photographs by Tyllie Barbosa are well adapted to the mode of the book and very distinct, the text can be easily comprehended and the generous type size is commendable and also undisputedly advantageous for vision-impaired readers.

The yarn colors are somewhat muted which goes very well with the style of the scarves and helps enormously in visualizing the stitch sequences of the patterns. Changing the yarn choices is always the choice of the knitter's imagination, like a painter has the freedom to choose her own colors from the palette.

Patterns: All scarves are Outside-the-Box, often three-dimensional in structure, optical illusions, while being clear and uncluttered, reduced to the essential. The degree of difficulty ranges from good basic knitting skills (scarf: Aria) to excellent knitting skills (Drifting Pleats) - like a book for all seasons.

I would like to recommend the book Knitting New Scarves unreservedly to knitters who have a penchant for knitting and wearing extraordinary designs, or who would like to make a unique gift to a special friend.

Added advantage: The skills learned by knitting patterns from this book will come into good stead with other knitting projects as well, maybe even with your own designs.

Superb and Simple!! You can teach yourself.
As a mom of 7, I have long since discovered how awesome Klutz books are. I have taught 3 of my girls to knit now. I WISH I had this when I taught them. My little 8 yr old can use this book with ease to teach herself and improve her skills.I have read 20 or more books that teach one to knit, and this, by far, is the simplest. You can be knitting within 30 mins, on your way to your first scarf or hat in a flash.Once you easily master knitting and purling, with this book, you can then better handle other how to knit books, and learn to read patterns for more complicated projects.

great book for starting out
This book is great for starting out. It is easy to understand with plenty of diagrams and includes nice supplies. Perfect for any age beginner - both myself, my daughter, and my son have found this to be the best book for great looking starter projects and it is nice to buy the book with the needles and yarn.

Great book to learn, but I'd suggest getting better yarn
I taught myself the basics of knitting with this book (along with some video on the internet). The instructions are easy to understand, and the small projects included teach you skills in a very intuitive manner. Most of the projects can be finished rather quickly, and this is really great for feeling a sense of accomplishment! However, I would suggest buying a couple skeins of higher quality yarn to replace the ones that come with the book. The included yarn is of pretty low quality; it does not slide well on the needles, and it separates very easily. These things, I think, make it even more difficult for a beginning knitter to learn.

This is the best learn to knit book I have ever seen
I bought the book for myself, I found it so helpful that I have bought several copies for gifts.

Great for beginners
Got this product for my step-daughter right after I learned how to knit from my Mom a couple months ago. I didn't quite have a handle on all the basics to teach her so I got her this kit to fill in the blanks for her and myself. I made her the cell phone sock, cute but a little too stretchy for the weight of a cell phone (would need to be reinforced). And I am looking forward to trying the scarf and hat. Great projects that you actually will want to make
The projects in this book are lovely.They are refined without being hard and most of the clothing will work nicely with a variety of yarns.As the other posters have mentioned, this isn't a book where one or two projects will be liked and then the others ignored.You will have a difficult time deciding which to do first.I chose the Organic Sprout Tank.But will soon be moving on to another.If you are not someone who has a small library of books, this should be in it.Seriously.Have fun, knit often and enjoy life!

Knitting Green just beautiful...
I love this book - I think the patterns are creative and pretty.I don't usually love all the patterns in a book, but this one is really chock full of nice ones.I am currently knitting the "Commuter's Knapsack" and it is coming out nicely.I, like the other reviewer, like the bike basket, it may be the next project I make from this book!!

Great Patterns ---Green or Not!
This book is chock full of wonderful patterns. Usually, I buy a book because I am desperate to make one pattern---not so with this book.I have already begun the chic commuter knapsack, and it is going smoothly.I also hope to make several more patterns. It is nice that the theme is "green", however, these patterns are appealing whether you use "green" yarns or not.I highly recommend this book.

A tangle in Ariadne's Web
Following an extended weekend a yarn shop owner unlocks the door to find a rich and unpopular lady dead on the floor. How was entry made and was the owner the intended target? As the owner's closest friends become suspects she joins forces with a detective to investigate. This is a chatty novel with a lot of dialog and thus it is a quick read. There are some clever turns of emphasis as we proceed but you might find a likely culprit about halfway through as I did. A really nice effort that makes me want to read the first volume in this series.

fun and enjoyable
One of my favorite cozy mystery theme is knitting mysteries. And Died in the Wool is one of my favorite cozies of all.

Ariadne Evans is the owner of Ariadne's Web, a successful knitting shop. Cranky Edith Perry is a difficult customer and not beloved in their Massachusetts town. But then she is found dead; strangled in some homespun wool. Edith was about to buy the building that housed Ariadne's Web and raise the rent on Ariadne's shop and that makes Ari a prime suspect, at least according detective Joshua Pierce.


my review: Though this follows the usual cozy mystery formula, it does so with a nice amount of humor and plenty of interesting characters:her Aunt Laura, ex-husband Ted, their seven year old daughter, Megan, her friend Diane and her husband Joe, part-time employees Kaitlin and Summer, Edith's son, and the usual small-townersto keep you guessing to the end as to the real killer. The story is from the point of view of Ari and Joshua, which makes it different from the usual cozy. While formulaic, it stands above others that I have read as it is better written and engaging. This comes with a few basic knitting patterns but nothing really interesting. But it makes me want to knit!

I definitely recommend this for cozy fans. I also recommend her next book, Knit Fast, Die Young

Just... not good
I bought this book while sick hoping for an easy, fun comfort read.To some extent it filled that role. I did read it, it was easy, but I can't say I enjoyed it.The plot is OK.If you are into figuring out mysteries you won't have a problem with this one - nothing to challenging here.The conclusion seems cut off and unfinished (not in a good In The Woods way but in the lazy way)- like the author knew the how but no the why of her crime.The big issue is with the main character.There is just no "there" there.I got about 2/3 of the way through before I figured out she was supposed to be "almost 30".REALLY?She reads like middle aged conservative DAR member.I kept wondering why all the other characters seemed to like her.Oh well.Knitting mystery - I got what I paid for.

Juvenile read.
I enjoy mysteries where I learn something or that have a story that pulls you along.Neither can be found in this book.If the focus is about pirated patterns, must we wait until the last 20 pages or so to find this out.

I had absolutely no interest in any of the characters.The characters had no depth and engaged in the most trivial conversations.After my experience with this mystery, I have absolutely no interest in reading any other knitting novels.

Great if there's nothing else
I am a knitter,so I generally enjoy stories about other knitters.This one was diverting up until halfway through when I realized the protagonist was ignoring her child who was obviously upset by the murder. Then when I realized the murder had something to do with patterns,I lost interest.I love a good pattern as much as the next person, but killing for the money and prestige from knitting patterns would be like committing murder in order to take credit for a good recipe. I was laughing at the end,and there wasn't even the zing of a good romance.I think I need a different genre, one with more quirky characters.These were too normal for me. ... Read more

The reader can truly "learn" to knit from this book.It is the clearist teaching with word and photo that I have ever read.I know how to knit and yet could value the perspective of the novice and treasure how much information was given, and given when needed, and so very clearly.

Not a bad two at a time sock book
There are a lot of sock books out there and here is one published by Storey Press in 2007.First the cons, if you want to learn to knit a sock from the toe up, do not buy this book unless you like some of the patterns within it and are willing to adapt them. If however you suffer from second sock syndrome and are interested in making two socks at a time on a long circular needle this book will take the mystery out of the process.2-at-a-Time Socks: Revealed Inside. . . The Secret of Knitting Two at Once on One Circular Needle Works for any Sock Pattern!reminds us that knitting can be about following instructions and using the only two stitches available to us knit stitches and purl stitches to create something wonderful and useful.

The book is broken down into three main sections, the technique section, a section with patterns, and an appendix.The first section is what I think is most valuable, with pictures, instructions and tips Morgan-Oakes walks you through all of the steps to make two socks on one 40 inch long circular needle and she does so clearly and it shows that a lot of thought went into her presentation of the techniques used.Morgan-Oakes acknowledges that it is tricky getting started so that you don't get frustrated right at the start.This first section also gives you the tools to adapt all of your cuff down patterns to be knit two-at-a-time.The second section has a variety of patterns for men, women, and children that are lovely and all follow the steps laid out in the technique section.In addition, the book is spiral bound so that it does not fall closed before you are ready for it to close, but that is just a nice touch and not a deal breaker.Finally, the appendix has the usual abbreviation section, resource section and glossary.

Do you have to have this book in your collection? If you already have Cat Bordhi's sock book on knitting socks two-at-a-time, you probably think you won't find anything new here, but you might surprised. What impresses me most about this book are the pictures. Just looking at the pictures makes the whole process seem approachable and worth attempting.

Best way to knit socks
This new technique in 2-at-a-Time socks will be my choice forever. I have knitted socks for over 35 years and every so often one would look a bit shorter or different from the other. This technique has eliminated the stress of making 2 socks alike.
I must admit it took a couple of tries to learn but the sample sock is small and easy to do. I look forward to making the sock patterns that are included in the book.

Waiting for the update!
This one is a bit disappointing as none of the patterns are really readable on the Kindle - font too small (for me anyway) and can't be enlarged.However the general instructions are legible and Amazon has advised it has gone back to the publisher to fix the problem - still waiting though!

UGH!!!
Don't waste your money!!! I bought this on impulse and bitterly regret it. I had dropped in at our local bookstore to pick up my husbands coursebooks that he'd ordered and I happened to see this displayed in the craft section in all of it's glory; I fell in love immediately. A pretty hardcover spiral bound book that I could lay flat was a dream and all of the socks looked so pretty. I knit anywhere & everywhere: in the van, at Church, doctors waiting rooms, etc. I'm always writing out current bits of the pattern I'm working on so I can take just that with me and not an entire book that I either have to keep flipped upside on my page (not good for the book) or keep a bookmark in it if I want consult the pattern; not fun. So I love the concept of the spiral bound book I could lay flat on my lap and consult to my hearts desire. I was especially enamored of the technique. I'm a very busy momma with four energetic offspring, a professional student for a husband (will he ever graduate! LOL) and three lovely felines sharing my busy household. I love to knit (it keeps me sane) and have been doing so for five years now. I have knit loads of socks and while I don't often run into one sock syndrome anymore it still takes a bit of time to complete a pair so if I could knit two at once how awesome would that be? My husband goes through so many! I had heard of the various other techniques besides dpn's but I had never explored them so when I saw this book there I took it as a sign and lovingly carried it home. None of my local shoppes had 40" cable needles so I put in an order at Knit Picks and eagerly awaited it's arrival. I pored over this book in the meantime so thought I had a good understanding of the author's technique when my lovely new needles & wool arrived. I couldn't wait until that evening after the angels were in bed and my husband was occupied with homework to start my first practice pair. Gah! It was a nightmare! Once I actually had needles and yarn in front of me, I could make no sense of it! I called my best friend whom is a knitting queen (compared to her I'll never be more than a competent amateur) for advice only to discover that she too had this book and had ditched it before we met; she couldn't figure it out either! I spent days working on it in my spare time trying to understand the authors directions and turned into a bit of a shrew in the process. I should have just perused the internet in the first place since in the end that's exactly what I spent all my time doing. I like the idea of one big circular needle but it's been tabled for now. Several people in my many knitting groups recommendKnitting Circles Around Socks: Knit Two at a Time on Circular Needles so I'm going to look into that one next. Now, I must admit that I did not know about the errata in this book until I started reading these reviews and I have no idea which version I have because at this moment it's in a box awaiting a move across town and I can't consult it; my husband would throttle me if he catches me unpacking any of our many many boxes of books in an attempt to find just one lone book. :D So I shan't do that. Since I have no idea which version I have, I can't honestly say that it may not work after the errata has been taken care of but I also wish to point out that an author whom allows her book to be printed with so many mistakes certainly is not very professional and doesn't seem to care for her work very much. I'm still not sure I'd put any credence in it after it's been corrected (If my version even needs to be which it may not; it's only been about 3 months since I bought it brand spanking new so it's probably safe to assume I have the "error free" version). I did attempt to make a pair of socks from this book, Croquette, on dpn's. The cuff is really pretty but the sock itself is trash. I know enough about sock construction that I should have had no problems switching between techniques. I thought I made some mistakes but after consulting several knitters in my knitting group they all agree with me that it was the pattern. At least for the Croquette pattern, if you choose to knit it on dpn's, follow the chart for the cuff (it really is so pretty when finished!) but from there construct your own sock. I did so using a Eye of Partridge heel and mirrored decreases on the toe. I would borrow this book from the library before buying it or perhaps pay a very small amount at a used bookstore. It's certainly not worth the amount I paid for it! Especially considering it "may" be full of errors. I salute the knitters who have figured this out; they must be made of sterner stuff than I.

Buyer beware. This book is loaded with mistakes.
After following this book to knit my first pair of socks, I discovered what had to be mistakes and went in search of the publisher's sheet of corrections meant for the purchasers of this book. These are corrections the publisher and author intend for the buyers of the book to write into the book by hand that weren't made before the book was published.

There are universal corrections that need to be made to every single pattern in the book. They are written once at the beginning of the correction sheet and are not repeated on the page-by-page corrections.

The basic Two at a Time how-to technique section at the front of the book is loaded with flaws.

Then, each and every pattern needs some correction or other.
My advice is to wait for subsequent editions where all photos, captions, and knitting instructions have been corrected in print.

What is worse, the author uses terms she invented that are not a part of the normal knitting lingo and are undefined by her in the book.
Good luck figuring out what an even row means to this author! Hint: It doesn't mean "even numbered rows" as you might first believe.

Sign me one unhappy book purchaser.

Underwhelming
I was quite unimpressed with this book.The look is very old fashioned and dated, and the garments pictured are lifeless and dull looking.Not an inspiring book at all, even if she is a knitting guru!

Never fails to impress....
Elizabeth Zimmerman has past on, but her concept of knitting continues to enlighten all of us.I am in awe of her simple but creative teaching techniques making knitting a delight rather than an intimidating project.Her humor lives on in her delightful books.

If you knit, you need this!
I don't know why I didn't purchase this or any of the other EZ knitting books before know.....I am finding this an indispensible source.I learned to knit the German way when I was young, and then didn't knit again until a few years ago (grandkids came along at the same tiem!!).EZ's books have given me the inspiration and instruction to do what I wanted to do with knitting but was afraid to try.And, her humor is awesome.I feel I have found a kindred spirit!any of her books are a needed addition for any knitter's library.

one of the best knitting books
I've had this book for a long time, & lent it to many knitters.I guess not everyone is interested in the autobiography. A lot of Americans don't know--or care--much about 20th c. European history or immigrants.I'm not one to read about celebrities, though, & I very much enjoyed reading about EZ, who writes her biography in a way that reflects her time and the places that she knew.She writes with a context, and very well.

As for the knitting, yesterday I decided that I needed to start on a project that can travel around with me.I have been wanting a shawl for the winter, & the pie r squared shawl is exactly what I need.So I sat down, read the instructions (not the pattern, but the description), looked at the diagram, glanced at the amount of yarn it would take, found some suitable yarn, & I'm off.I understand the construction as EX describes it, & I don't need to follow any pattern.Oh yes, I also pulled out a Mon Tricot pattern dictionary and picked out a stitch pattern--I'm going to flip through a Barbara Walker book too, before I actually cast on & put it all into my traveling knitting bag.

That is what the patterns in this book are good for: understanding the concept of the piece you are knitting.
The book also includes more detailed pattern versions.

If you are not interested in adapting these concepts to your own designs you will most likely find the patterns dull & boring.It would then be best to stay away from this book, & stick to fighting the row by row patterns --with all their frustrating mistakes that you can't easily catch in time because you don't understand the concept behind the design, & all their fussy construction details that are so unnecessary to elegant knitting. ... The book may not be for the beginner at first glance, but if you want to learn the ins and outs of cables and really understand the engineering behind cables this book will do that.She investigates and explains cables, what makes them reversible, how to incorporate color into cables to make them stand out, how a knitter has to allow for the natural tendency of cables to draw in. In addition, Chin lays out a whole new way to chart cables.

When I first started to knit I went to a class offered by Ms. Chin. The class was about designing your own garments.Ms. Chin's teaching philosophy is about empoweringknitters to examine their own creativity. This book tackles the technique of cables with the same eye to having the knitter understand why cables work the way they do so you can use them to your advantage.

One problem with this method is that the explanation is complicated and the book does not always make it clearer.The first chapter of the book talks about a new way to chart that is elegant and actually helps you visualize cables much better than traditional charts, but the patterns in the book use traditional charts and not the new ones Ms. Chin has just taught you.

The patterns in the book are unbelievably wonderful and fresh; probably worth working through the book's complications. I would not attempt them if you are a beginner unless you like a challenge.

lily chin delivers again
I've only made my way through this amazing book once, but expect to use it often in future.Chin's fine grasp of geometry, reversibility is at it's best here.She makes you think about cables in new and interesting ways, photos are great, selected patterns to illustrate and use introduced concepts are stimulating.Highly recommended.

Outstanding book
Lily Chen is the queen of the reversible cables. Though some of the patterns have been previously published, it is wonderful to have them all in one place.

Her explanations are that of the skilled teacher that she is.I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in cable techniques.I personally will use a reversible cable every chance I can.I have nearly finished the reversible cable shawl in Kidsilk Haze in a pretty celedon green.It is gorgeous!

It's OK
Certainly has lots of information for the skilled/experienced knitter but for me it was too complex.Perhaps one day I will be glad I have it in my library but at the moment most of the material is above my skill level.From now on I will purchase my knitting books from a store where I can look at the contents before buying.

Great reliable reference, even for a beginner
I taught myself to knit using a kit I bought in a craft store. After a few scarves I quickly got frustrated and put my knitting away for about 5 years. I've picked it up again and I turn frequently to this helpful book for illustrations of common techniques. It is the only book I have in which the drawings don't look like a hand clutching a wad of cooked spaghetti. I would recommend this book to a beginning knitter as a helpful resource.

Instructions are unclear or missing
We got this book from Goodwill for a dollar and after trying to use it now I understand why the previous owner donated it.

Nice Starting Point
This is a nice book for beginning knitters. The projects are useful, but also basic enough that they can be easily adjust and altered for other needs.

Good basic reference, but be prepared to improvise
I liked the detailed instructions, as well as the illustrations which showed how to do a number of useful techniques (picking up stitches, knitting into row below, etc).Too many knitting books assume you already know every technique there is.

The individual projects are hit-and-miss. I looked at them as simply good ways to practice the various techniques that are used.The sweater designs in particular are disappointingly geared toward men with slimmer builds and wilder fashion sense (not to mention lots of $$$ for expensive yarn) than myself.

I'd say if you can find it for under $10, go ahead.It's a good basic reference at least.

Knit like a man!

I bought this book for my boyfriend who is just learning to knit. The instruction throughout the book is excellent for a beginner. Some of the patterns are great while others... well not so much. So I would not recommend this book to an experienced knitter, but for the male beginner, this book is a great starting point.

disappointing
This book came with some good reviews, like it's the take-along you can't live without, so I bought it.I'm new to knitting.This book does have some good pictures of shaping the parts of a top and showing and explaining how that is done, however, I just bought a simple washcloth pamphlet which has better pictures of, for instance, the knit-below stitch.My pamphlet made that a breeze, but in this book, that stitch is not pictured nearly as clearly and is very confusing: the important picture is just missing so a knitter has no idea where to insert the right needle.So I don't use my book much.Maybe I will someday for other projects, but for now it sits and I use the pamphlets for simple new stitch guides.That's a disappointment.

A MUST!
Visual books are the best in explaining techniques. I love these guides and refer to them often.I have a vast collection of knitting books and this is a must for new knitters to add to their libraries. I think even the more experienced knitter would find this a valuable aid.

This is a lovely book. I have only made one pattern and it worked out pretty well. The thing that I hadn't thought of ahead of time is that the yarns used might not be readily available, and that each project would use a different yarn. Not recommended for anyone who only wants to use standard yarns.

Good addition to knitting library
I bought the book for a specific pattern, the knitted spiral ball, but found others in it that I will probably make at some point.Although I have several shelves of knitting books, including many baby pattern books, I am glad to make this book part of my library.The baby aran sweater is particularly sweet, as is the cover sweater.Well-written instructions with lots of good photos and cute babies.A fine book.

Love this book
I don't usually purchase knitting books, with so much stuff online, but this book is great.The patterns are easy to follow, and the projects are adorable and quick to knit.I know I will make different projects in this book for baby shower gifts as well as for knits for my baby.

4 stars for sizing range
I was looking for pattern book with knits for little ones as some of my friends and colleagues are having babies - I wanted a broad variety of patterns that could be adapted in size for several years of age.

I agree with some of the previous reviewers that none of the patterns in the book are earth-shattering unique or innovative, however, all of them are cute and tasteful and can be customised easily through yarn and colour choices. As I indicated in my title I really love the fact that the authors give you the variable sizing option for most patterns (for some it would not make sense) from newborn to 2 year old - critical for no-kid knitters who want to knit fitting garments for little ones.

I am an intermediate-advanced knitter and don't mind the detailed instructions - sometimes they even serve as a good reminder of techniques that you may not have used in a long time.

I don't regret this purchase at all and plan to make multiple projects based on this book.

Too Far Out
I love retro knitting, but this book missed the mark for me.The patterns are certainly not anything the average knitter would knit and wear.Some of the knits would best be forgotton as many could not be worn by middle to older aged knitters.Just not my cup of tea since the designs and colors are just too far out there.I had to return the book. And frankly, as a knitter, why would I want sewing patterns and instructions included in a knitting book?

Cool Patterns and Fun Commentary
I love this book. The patterns are varied and plentiful, and the designs are updated, wearable versions of the styles and trends from the past. No matter what era you might want - from 40s vixen to 70s funky, they've got it.(And there's probably a hat to match.) Seriously, there's a TON of patterns - hats, skirts, sweaters, jackets, socks, dresses.And many of them are double patterns, like a hat AND sweater or a mens AND a women's version, so there's even more than the 43 patterns on the cover. (It's fun to see which designer did which pattern, and how they treated their categories, if you know your bloggers...)

In an unusual move that I am sure is appreciated by cross-crafters, the book contains both crochet and knitting, with a sewing project thrown in for good measure.Again with the chock full.I also liked the text in this book - I'm not usually one to read all the chapter intros and such, but the descriptions are fun and the walk down memory lane is enhanced by all the little details and descriptions the authors added.

So yes, I recommend it, and I honestly think anyone should be able to find something for them in here, but even if they didn't, they'd have fun looking.

Definitely retro
If you are looking for something that is truly retro, this may be the book for you. If you are looking for classic styles that have been updated, you won't get it here which is why I've rated it 3 stars. Several of the styles are "mod" fashions right out of the mid to late '60's. If you are over 30 and/or have less than a perfect slim figure, you probably wouldn't want to be caught dead in fashions like the crocheted "hot pants" (which are super short shorts) and the body hugging Sunshine Day minidress crocheted in horizontal bands of bright primary colors. The "Watusi" is a sleevless minidress that is really cute and would look gorgeous on an age 16-something young woman.

If you are looking for something retro for the younger set, this might be for you, but I would run the patterns by any potential recipient first. There are a couple very nice classic designs that would be appropriate for a more mature woman, but that's about it for the over 40 set.

I have very mixed feelings about this book and have thought about returning it, but will probably keep it instead. If you want to get an idea of the "flavor" of the designs inside, the cover says it all. Very sassy, lots of attitude, "far out" and definitely retro, with an author named "Stitchy McYarnpants". These are not updated vintage designs but new unique designs patterned after the wilder less classic designs of the past.

Gorgeous!
I love the photos, and the patterns are beautiful. It's amazing to have so vintage inspired patterns in one place. The diversity of patterns is wide which allows the indulgences' of taste from the 1920s to the 1980s. It is ambitious in its scope and every pattern won't be for every person's taste. However they give an unprecedented number of patterns 44 in all. So there will be more than enough for every person's taste. Some of my favorites are the blue cardigan (shot in front of the sports car) and the crazy poodle bottle cozy, among many others. I also love the crazy sci-fi chapter, which takes the book to another level. They may seem kind of out of this world at first, but they actually are very inventive and wearable for everyday use. I also love, love, LOVE the alien doll!

Strange, but I like it
I've been knitting for many years, and I was kind of expecting this book to be filled with some of the kind of patterns I knitted when I was a teenager or that my grandmother knitted for me - cardigans, twinsets and things like that.I didn't know anything about either of the authors other than that Stitchy McYarnypants also has a book called Museum of Kitchy Stitches and I really didn't know what kitchy meant.Well, now I do!The patterns in this book are definitely a little on the unusual side, and you might want to look at the other book or Stitchy's blog to get an idea of what these patterns will be like.

Once I got over the surprise of all the bright colors and "different" styles, I really looked closely at the photos and saw that they are all really beautifully designed.And, not all of them are "kitchy".There is a sailor sweater that is really nice; a striped turtleneck that I like a lot; a short sleeved, ribbed sweater that has two buttons at the back of the neckline.It's really gorgeous.There is a cardigan/jacket that has fabric covered buttons, and a matching hat with a strip of the same fabric woven through it in a really unique way.

One thing that you don't find out until you start looking through the book is that there are quite a few crochet patterns - approx 10 of them.There are also 4 sewing patterns.The crochet patterns are probably the most unusual, and they include a pair of crocheted hot pants and a granny square dress.

Most of the patterns are meant to fit snugly, but the sizes on most of them range from Small to 1 or 2X.That is a real bonus because I bought a book of vintage type patterns once and the largest bust size was 38.They say the patterns are meant to fit the modern woman and I guess we are all a little bigger than they were in the days these styles were first worn.I also have to add that the patterns all look a little complicated, so this book probably wouldn't be good as a beginner's knitting book (unless you are just looking for inspiration). Each pattern has a very nice photo and there is a little written description of each item.The writing style is really fun and I enjoyed reading through the book.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a book to have on your shelf that you will use again and again for basic patterns, this is probably not the book for you.But, if you love knitting books like I do, and are looking for something that you don't already have - definitely get this book.You will really have a fun time with it!

KNITTING INTO THE MYSTERY
I recently was involved in starting a prayer shawl ministry at our church.This book was very helpful.It was inspirational in background for this type of ministry and very specific about how to get started. I appreciated the tips to make the prayer shawls more personal and suggestions for prayers.I am very pleased with my purchase.

Highly motivational for knitters. It calls attention to why we knit shawls for the Prayer Shawl ministry, It goes into the spiritual aspects of this process. It does have some directions for knitting shawls but this is much more than a how-to book. Buy this for your church library.
