5-0 out of 5 stars A CULTURAL FEAST
Kwanzaa is rapidly approaching and as with all holidays requires detailed preparation. Contained in these pages are all the components you need for a meaningful Kwanzaa celebration with ritual and food.

Eric Copage shares with us the origins of Kwanzaa as well as his own experiences in first celebrating the holiday. We are introduced to the seven princples of Kwanzaa and the relevance that it has for the African-American community.

You can't have a true celebration unless good tasting food is present. At the very heart of the book are over 120 recipes for you to prepare for the Kwanzaa feast. The recipes are samples from Africans throughout the diaspora. Indulge yourself with pigeon peas and rice from the Caribbean. Avocado mousse with shrimp sauce from Brazil will tantilize your taste buds. A pot of mustard greens from "down home" (the South) in the United States will fill your belly. And let us not forget spicy matoke from Kenya. If you mouth is not watering yet for these delicious treats then something must be wrong with your taste buds.

The above dishes are easy to make and you are provided with suggested menus for the feast. If by chance some of the unusual ingredients are not available in your local grocery store, never fear. Mail order resources are provided for you in the book. As Kwanzaa approaches enjoy the friendship, food and celebration but must of all stand firm with the principles which bind us together as a people. Enjoy! Happy Celebration. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hope it includes the best part!
Hopefully the book has a section on Ron Karenga, the creator of Kwanzaa.Ron, or Ron Everett, or Maulana Karenga, or whatever made up name he is calling himself this week, is a convicted felon who kidnapped and beat two women with electrical cords and a baton until they disrobed. He 'earned' a doctorate right after getting out of prison for this.
Looks like any scumbag can hoodwink the peeps if he has the right 'gimme gimme gimme' philosophy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Kwanzaa Resource
As a person who has celebrated Kwanzaa for a couple of decades and as the creator of several kwanzaa products myself, I found the book 'Kwanzaa: From Holiday to Every Day' to be a very informative book on this growing celebration.

The book offers historical info on Kwanzaa and illustrates how the celebration connects people of African descent around the world with our cultural roots.

The book shows you how to organize a Kwanzaa celebration of your own and has a lot of great contacts for Kwanzaa music, books and supplies.

I recommend it for anyone interested in learning about Kwanzaa. I also recommend it for those who already know of and celebrate Kwanzaa as a way to reinforce its concepts and its meaning to you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Engaging and thorough.
This book explores not only the holiday of Kwanzaa, but how to incorporate the values of Kwanzaa into your everyday life without going outside of who you intrinsically are.You are already a person who is creative, caring, conscientious and interested in African inspired cultural values, then this book can expand and enhance your practices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo!
Ms. Angaza's journalistic style takes the reader on a historical voyage as well as a personal one. Her sense of prose will dazzle the reader as well as make him ponder of why it is so important to celebrate such a holiday. This book has even inspired me to throw my first Kwanzaa event this year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kwanzaa - Beyond 7 Days
I picked up Ms. Angaza's text, Kwanzaa: From Holiday to Every Day,and have begun to read it like a novel. I thank Ms. Angaza for penning this positive vibration and upliftment. Her prose is smooth and rational. It puts into perspective the cultural repression and damage to the psyche of Africans worldwide while also providing numerous examples of our triumphs, successes and committment to our cultural heritage.

I laughed out loud at the passage where she exposes the cultural bias inherent in the debate over hyphenated identities and the kiss me i'm Irish example. She's crafted a blend of history, social commentary, practical applications, call to action and inspirational vignettes that can be beneficial to all.I reccommend purchasing this text just for the resource section - simply phenomenal. The resource seciton could be used as a life long self study core curricula.Don't overlook the recipes - yummy. She presents things so honestly (sans pretext) that I think people will be encouraged to try out many of the book's recommendations. A Complete guide is an apt subtitle for this work. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Details, Details
People looking for ideas on what to serve and gifts to give for Kwanzaa will find good suggestions in this book. The book also includes a helpful pronounciation guide for Kwanzaa terms. But I was disappointed to find twocritical errors: 1) the author instructs that the green candles are placedto the left of the black candle in the Kwanza Kinara (candle holder) whenit is the red candles that go to the left -- as illustrated on the book'scover. 2) The author advises that Kwanzaa feast, or Karamu, is held on the6th day of the holiday, when it is held on the seventh and last. Everythingabout Kwanzaa relates to seven -- seven principles, seven symbols, sevendays. DUH! Unfortunately, those key errors dampened by enthusiasm for therest of the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to the celebration of Kwanzaa.
Ms. Harris' book, "A Kwanzaa Keepsake: Celebrating the Holiday With New Traditions and Feasts," is excellent.I knew nothing about Kwanzaa when I picked it up but felt as though I had been thoroughlyintroduced to a marvelous seven-day series of ceremonies, feasts andcelebrations.I came away with a great deal of respect for Kwanzaa and theseven principles behind it.It is unfortunate, however, that the creatorof Kwanzaa,Maulana Karenga, felt it necessary to discriminate against allbut African Americans, for all mankind would benefit from participating inthis moving celebration. We could all stand to be affirmed and reaffirmedas members of our families, our communities and our cultures on an annualbasis. ...
