5-0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful resource
The book covers most of the landscaping issues with easy to understand planting guides.A very good book for planning all or a part of your yard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea Book and Reference for Southeast Landscaping
I found this book in the library and after renewing it 3 times figured I'd better just buy it. I've checked out many garden plan books, but this one had the info I needed to plan for different seasons, how the plans would look in a few years, and what I needed to maintain the plants. It's specific to the Southeast so I don't waste time on plants that won't work for me. It's a great idea source and reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Clear instructions with great diagrams.
This book is an excellent guide for the new or veteran homeowner. It's filled with lots of ideas and a variety of plants including trees, shrubs, perennials, groundcovers and a few annuals. It offers a samples of typicalplanting scenarios for the home landscaper. Identifying each design as goodfor sun or shade and showing the variations is one of the best features.Seasonal variations are also helpful. But the best feature is that itclearly diagrams the placement of each plant including distance from thestructure and distance from each other. Drawings and actual photographs ofplants are also helpful. I highly recommend this book for the new orrenovating landscaper. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
We landscaped our backyard last year complete with flagstone patio, gardens and a rock retaining wall. This book was straight forward and extremely helpful. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start
Sunset does a good job here of providing basic information on using stones in landscaping, including a very nice part on pebble mosaics. This book is better than the Taunton book on the same topic. Taunton suffers from sloppy editing, e.g., too much duplication on garden paths, and insufficient explanation for the DIYer. The main criticism here that I have is 1) lack of modernism. There is almost no coverage for modernist applications of stonework in architectural landscaping. 2) An adversion to including significant "commercial" installations. For example, the garden at the Getty Center, or any similiar garden, could have been included for inspiration and ideas. Overall though, its worth the money, and better than the Tauton competition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I'm not a gardener but then again I have never had a house to HAVE a garden. We are moving onto a brand new house and I found this book by accident.

It is outstanding.

It will give you ideas on what to plant in the shade, sun part sun and what I like most are the diagrams.I have no eye for what a garden will look like in 2 months and how I should plant a garden that looks lush and well thought out.I would have planted a garden with random flowers spaced too far apart.

Perfect book for somebody that wants a garden that looks like they knew what they were doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Landscaping with Native Plants of the Southwest
As an environmental horticulturist in the Coachella Valley of California, I can strongly recommend this book as a very helpful desert garden guide. The plants and suggestions in the book are very good if one keeps in mind their location, elevation and soil type.I especially like that Miller gives the minimum water tolerance of individual plant species as most desert guides written in Arizona/New Mexico recommend too little water for sandy soils of the Coachella valley.California is not included as part of the southwest but those of us gardening in southeastern California know that we have much more in common horticulturally with southern Arizona than with the rest of our State. This book is one of only a half dozen good desert garden guides.Native Plants for Southwestern Landscapes

5-0 out of 5 stars A great gardening book for beginners...
I live in the Northeast and am a novice gardener. This book is great because it gives you a lot of different garden plans, and let's you see what plants look good together and work well together in similar conditions. I also like that it shows a lot of the garden plans in different seasons, and in some cases shows you what your garden will look like when you plant it, then in five years, or ten years down the road.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful & Knowledgeable
Great book. Shows many pictures of native plants, trees, shrubs, flowers, vines, etc.
Also talks about how they grow, best areas, etc.
While this book will show you all the native plants in Florida, it does not touch (of course) on plants that WILL grow in Flrodai, of which would be an even bigger book.
Still very useful & will stay on my shelf for many years.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hardly about desert plants
I returned this book because it was full of advice about how to plant and maintain plants that are not native to the desert: bermuda grass, citrus, grapes, tomatoes, mums...
Almost nothing about the native plants of the desert Southwest. I would not recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING
THIS BOOK APPEARED TO BE WRITTEN IN THE EARLY 1900'S. THE ILLUSTRATIONS WERE SMALL, OR POOR QUALITY, AND IN BLACK AND WHITE.NOT A SINGLE COLOR PHOTO! COMPREHENSIVE INSTRUCTIONS ON SOIL PREPARATION, I.E.LEVELING THE SOIL ETC. VERY LITTLE ON ANUALS, COLOR, BALANCE, OR ANYTHING ESTHEITCALLY PLEASING. THIS BOOK WAS A CHORE TO LOOK THROUGH.

4-0 out of 5 stars very good book
I like this book because it has a lot of information if you are starting out or just adding or changing things. There was a lot of information on soils and fertilizers and ways to plant and what to look for and ways to water and how to save money and on and on.I would have liked a list of plants and information about them but that is all I can think of that isn't here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Garden Guru for the Desert
A man of the soil.Brookbank has turned this lowly phrase into a highcompliment. If any gardener takes these words too lightly without diggingdeep into the properties of the soil, let him/her beware. For atonement lethim be given the task of counting the millions of microbes in a merehandful. With suchdetailed knowledge of the chemistry of plant lifeBrookbank is a desert gardening guru......Advice on what to plant, how tomake a soil probe, and exactly how to install an irrigation system, isclearly presented. There are wonderful illustrations throughout the book. Are you sure you know how and when to use fertilizer? Read how plantsextract nutrients from the soil-- these are valuable words that must beread with close attention for a real understanding of what's going on belowvisible plant life. You will stop thinking of soil as mere dirt.....A hardlesson for many gardeners to learn: don't fight nature. The advice on"What to Do When Things Go Wrong" will solve many problems.Recognize your poor gardening decisions. "Had you done the rightthing," Brookbank says, "there wouldn't be anyproblem.".....Read on and learn: establishing year round color, caringfor hedges, lawns, roses, palm trees, wildflowers, cacti, and how to dig upplants and move them. Vital to know re cacti. Everything is here and everygardener, novice or expert, will benefit.....I'll be leaving Atlanta andmoving to Tucson this Fall so the chapter "When You Move into andEmpty House" gave me good advice. The key is to take your time, lookaround and make notes as you observe. "Don't prune yet and don'tremove the plants that irritate you." This comment really got to me.The man understands that some plants are just un-standable. One man'smarigold is another man's poison ivy!.....Brookbank closes with a veryuseful monthly reminder list of what chores need your attention now. TakeNovemeber: "Chart garden tempera- tures in various areas so you knowhow to act when a frost warning is issued. 4-0 out of 5 stars Loved It
This book was wonderful because it had lots of picture to draw ideas from.It also had information on different seasons and how the plants would be affected. It was so helpful to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource.
This book is a wonderful resource. The book is full of design ideas shown in site plans, 3-D renderings, and with great close up photos of the flowers, scrubs, and trees. Many designs are shown in each season and in a progression of how it will look in three to five years and then in ten to fifteen years. I found this book to be very helpful in designing flower beds, in picking plantings, and in knowing how to care for each planting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good use of Native Species
I'm not under 13, but I didn't want to give my name and email.

This book is great. It takes advantage of some great underused native plants from the Mid Atlantic. It is very helpful because it provides plant spacing and maintenance. Most plants are low maintenance, all year interest.

I have used the landscape plans in my yard and will continue to use this book as my number one reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Repairing Dam on Earth Pond (Lake)
My dam on the lake collapsed on April 1st 2005.
I have been looking for a book with information on how to build (re-build) an earthen dam. This book has a lot of good ideas on how to build an earthen dam and it doesn't hurt to know that the author has been building them for over 20 years. The neighbors said that the dam has been re-built 2 times, and they still have not learned from their mistakes. With this book I can point out the problems and try to rebuild it to last longer than 2 years. Can't wait to try his techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Rose Book Period!
I must have 30-40 books on Roses, and this is my very favorite! The practical approach to planting and growing roses, plus the realistic, yet beautiful photographs are just two of the reasons every rose grower MUST have this book among their collection.I especially enjoyed the landscaping listing of disease-resistant selections.Jeff Cox knows his roses!

3-0 out of 5 stars bueno para aficionados

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for rose information you can't find in other places
I love this book, and have found tons of inspiration in it.It's filled with ideas, technical answers, and beautiful photos. The book has tons information and is not just a glossary of popular roses.

The only drawback I found with this book is that almost all of the photos are of pink roses.I was hoping to find more photos of inspiring landscapes with yellow and red roses. However, that's only a minor detail, and all in all this book is fabulous.Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Useful
There are many books about roses but this is one of the better ones. Written by well-known garden host (HGTV and PBS) Jeff Cox, it is a beautiful yet practical book that delivers exactly what the title promises.

The first couple of hundred pages give you ideas for using roses in a whole range of different garden settings. The remainder explains how to buy, plant and care for roses. The advice is excellent for the novice or intermediate gardener.I give the writer full marks for not just providing a "directory of roses" - a cop-out all too often used to fill pages in garden books. Instead he shows how different types of roses can be used in the landscape.

The book has plenty of colour photographs showing roses used in different settings. I have to say that I was turned off by the hype on the cover. This is not a "ground-breaking book", the effects are not "dazzling" and as a guide it was useful rather than "inspirational". However, the writer has produced a practical, workman-like guide to effective landscape design using roses.

The book is well-designed and easy to read. I would recommend it to anyone who was thinkinf of incorporating roses into their garden.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incorporate the rose bush into a variety of landscaping goal
This isn't your usual all-encompassing guide to rose varieties: instead it tells how to incorporate the rose bush into a variety of landscaping goals; from walkways and arbors to container gardening. Tips on choosing and growing the newer, hardier, low-maintenance breeds blend with those on how to arrange roses in conjunction with shrubs and other perennials for maximum effect. ... Read more
