There a lots of "cute" gardening books in my library with pretty pictures, but this one gets used the most.I even copy gardening home remedies in it so that I don't have to look them up elsewhere.

Product Description
Bare, stark swimming pools - those rectangular concrete holes in the ground surrounded by a chain-link fence - are going the way of the dinosaurs. Pool owners (and there are 7 million of them across North America) have begun to see the pool and the area around it as an outdoor living space, a place for entertaining a crowd or relaxing alone. In response to this hot, new trend, gardener and landscape designer Catriona Tudor Erler has written POOLSCAPING, a one-of-a-kind handbook overflowing with inspiring ideas and practical advice on how to make your swimming pool the lovely, welcoming centerpiece of your property.

Erler takes readers step by step through the poolscaping process, whether starting from scratch or renovating an existing pool. She begins with choosing the best location for the pool and designing (or refurbishing) the deck and edging that will surround it. She presents a host of ideas for dramatic pool lighting, including underwater options. The fencing chapter addresses choosing styles as well as safety issues and even how to disguise a fence with plantings.

Erler explores design options for building or renovating a spa adjacent to the pool, as well as how to incorporate furnishings, pergolas, and pool houses into the poolscape. A plant directory features the best poolside plants, with a focus on varieties of flowers, vines, and shrubs that are low maintenance and look attractive throughout the pool season. Erler also offers ideas for outstanding poolside planters and containers for bringing greenery and color right up to the pool.

Illustrated with beautiful full-color photographs of outstanding poolscapes, this unique guide demonstrates how any pool owner can transform the pool area into the showpiece of the neighborhood. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a book for plants!
I had high hopes due to high reviews, but I was very unhappy to find that only a small section of the book is actually about plants! You would think with a name like "Poolscaping" that the book would have had more to do about plants and landscaping around the pool. The book is instead divided in chapters about how to build a pool and many pictures on waterfalls and spa's. Very generic as a whole.

4-0 out of 5 stars what I needed to know
This book was an excellent resource for the designer looking to work with swimming pools. The ilustrated examples and artistic tips were an invauable inspiration for sparking the imagination when designing pools. Before reading this I did think of pools as slabs of concrete filled with water, but I believe this book has put far down the path of being able to design elegant swimming pools. I consider this a must read for any architectural designer.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a great source for landscaping ideas
Based on the description, I believed this book would be full of design ideas and photos of well-landscaped pools. It isn't. If you are looking (as I was) for examples to show a landscaper (or to do it yourself), you should look elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not so good
This is one of the not so good books for pools like many many others. I don't know may be it is too hard to write for pools. There are inside some pictures but nothing to catch the eye neither spectacular. THis book was suppouse to guide you how to create your own pool but I have see much better books!
So if you are going to spend money to build a pool keep on searching for another book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers swimming pool decor and appropriate landscaping
Transform the swimming pool of a backyard into a Tuscan paradise with tiles and flowering plants, or create a pool with a beach-like presence filled with beach plants: that's the idea of Pool Scaping, a title which covers both swimming pool decor and appropriate landscaping around it. Pool Scaping is a lovely guide which covers the specifics of plants in a water surrounding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Landscaping Book for this region
This book is a must have for the southeastern gardener.Common (well-known) names are used for plants, and numerous landscaping plans included. My favorite landscaping book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to implement suggestions
For someone like me that has a hard time designing outdoor spaces, this is a great book. There are lots of diagrams and suggestions for creating really lovely and appropriate landscapes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
Good plant info. I would have liked more landscaping plans, nonetheless they were able to provide flexible enough information to get me started. I especially like being for a specific region.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful resource
The book covers most of the landscaping issues with easy to understand planting guides.A very good book for planning all or a part of your yard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea Book and Reference for Southeast Landscaping
I found this book in the library and after renewing it 3 times figured I'd better just buy it. I've checked out many garden plan books, but this one had the info I needed to plan for different seasons, how the plans would look in a few years, and what I needed to maintain the plants. It's specific to the Southeast so I don't waste time on plants that won't work for me. It's a great idea source and reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Landscape design for real people!
This beautiful book is a joy to read for anyone dreaming about improving their home's landscape.I'm a big fan of the TV show and am delighted they've come out with a book that captures the projects so well. Its premise is that everyone deserves good design and you don't have to be rich to get it.There are so many great ideas packed into the book with before and after photos, lists of materials, and clear instructions on installation techniques. I've purchased many residential garden design books only to be left disappointed by pretty pictures of plants and boring text. This book takes a step back and starts with a client's problem and how good design can solve it. Dean Hill is a very talented designer and Jackie Taylor is an enthusiastic co-conspirator.Together, they've created an interesting and informative book about real projects belonging to real people. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for arid areas
This book has great ideas, illustrated with pictures, for water-sparing landscapes in the Southwest and California. The ideas are practical and the pictures are inspiring.

2-0 out of 5 stars Landscaping in the desert? Book disappointing.
The book covers a difficult subject, but with that in mind I found little new information. It lacks the unique creativeity I was expecting.Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for newbies
If you don't know the first thing about native landscaping or habitat gardening, this is a great book to start with. It is so complete, it may be the only book you need. It has gorgeous pictures of attractive native gardens, garden plans, and a lengthy plant reference. Even as a Northern Californian, I found a surprising amount of information that was relevant to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful guide for specific garden areas
I really enjoyed this book. It helped me design and implement a hummingbird garden area. I now have a seating spot in the garden to enjoy the many H that come. I am buying another one of these great books for a friend who admired my garden.Thank you author Sally Wasowski

5-0 out of 5 stars This book eats post-it notes...
I have the hardcover version (Native Gardens for Dry Climates) and I highly recommend this book. The Wasowski's do an admirable job of showing off the best of each plant - you get the idea that ALL these plants are worth having, and so we covered the book in post-it notes...

The information is detailed enough in terms of native habitat, water, and sun/shade requirements and growing habits that we could build a great "hit list" of plants that we took to the local native nurseries. We found almost everything on our list, so the plants covered seem easy enough to find, at least in Los Angeles.

The best feature of this book can be found under the "Other Value" subhead for each plant listing:whether the flowers are used by hummingbirds or bees; whether it's a larval plant for butterflies or moths; and whether the seed or fruit is eaten by birds. I wish all books had this essential information for the wildlife gardener. ... Read more

This book came just as described and very quickly.I bought this book after looking through my mom's.It has such great ideas and step by step instructions. It's also a great visual reference for things you want to do to your house.

3-0 out of 5 stars A construction book
Great book if you want to know how to build structures like gazebos, walls, fences, pools, ramps, decks, irrigation systems, etc. It shows you the step by step with photos and drawings.
This book is not the right choiceif you are lookingfor plants arrangement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I am new to landscaping and bought this book because I have a lot of questions. This book gave me a lot of great ideas. If you are new to landscaping you will find it very usefull. Don't hesitate to buy if you are a newbie to landscaping.

4-0 out of 5 stars A excellent buy; very good structure and content.
This book walks you through the processes of landscaping, from planning to installation, in a very readable, understandable and enjoyable manner. As a landscape designer, I'm always searching for references of any type touse when creating "yard spaces" and presenting those ideas to mycustomers. With books, I'm usually disappointed either with the graphicand/or written content regarding the details of landscaping, particularlythose publications sold at the Home Depots et al.This was different. Technical to the point that's necessary and not too "flowery" init's narrative, it just provides wellwritten ideas and executions formany landscaping tasks.

The illustrations & photography in manybooks I've seen work OK but give the books an "old" feel, because, in many cases, they are old in date and style. With fewexceptions, the artwork and landscape "styling" in this bookappear current and appropriate. That made it a more believable booktoo.

All said and done, this book is an excellent value for those seekinggeneral-to-semi-technical information for a wide variety of landscapingtasks. With its emphasis on extensive and educated planning, this book isan asset to the homeowner and the landscape professional alike. In myopinion, one of the book's greatest achievements may be that homeowners, after reading it, can decide better whether to tackle a project themselvesor work with professionals. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent guide and pleasure to look at
I bought this because I missed my native Michigan while living here in Los Angeles.Hopefully someday I'll use this book to landscape a house back home but for now it's purely for nostalgia.Native plants thrive because they are perfectly suited to the local geography, weather, and other plants and animals. This book offers extensive information on all types of native Michigan plants (trees, shrubs, flowers, etc.) and sections on the techniques and issues involved with native plant gardening. What really grabbed my attention, though, were the beautiful color photos on every page.Though I would have appreciated a section on edible plants (I don't think there was one), this book shows that a native garden can be just as beautiful and pleasing as one full of exotic species and probably easier to care for without artificial fertilizer and insecticides.

5-0 out of 5 stars Landscaping with Native Plants of Michigan
I bought this for my daughter, an avid gardener, who moved to Michigan last year. She is thrilled with it, said it is full of great information and she looks forward to using it this spring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Beginners and Advanced Gardeners
I am an Advanced Master Gardener and have loaned this book to many friends who have all ultimately bought the book. The trend is now to plant more native species and this is an excellent reference book. If you want to plant a raingarden or just incorporate more hardy native perennials into your existing landscape this is the book for you. People think native plants are just a bunch of weeds, but this book shows you that isn't true.

5-0 out of 5 stars Landscaping with Native Plants of Michigan
I purchased this book for my daughter to replace a borrowed copy. She is trying to plant her back yard with native plants. She thought this was an exceptional book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great start
This book was a great introduction to the native plants of MI, how to plant and take care of them and which non-native species to avoid.Really the only thing lacking was a more complete list of the native plants.I have found several that were not included in the book.I would still recommend this book to anyone interested in planting only native plants of MI in their gardens. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Dogs Eye View Of Your Prairie
Ever increasing my backyard prairie I was really looking forward to this book. Designing and using structure to create an "English Garden" of prairie plants rather than just scattering some seed. Good Idea! A prairie related book that is on a different topic than every other prairie book? Bring It On! Everything sounded cool up-front.

Inside the book, however, is page after page of black and white photographs. It's not fun. It's not exciting. I don't want my yard to look like that. Wildflowers are enjoyed for their color and great variety, to see them in black and white is a complete bummer. Flipping through this book is completely unappetizing. For me, the words and authority of the authors become completely lost. Much like a medical school textbook from 50 years ago, there are some color photographs in the center of the book. Printed on heavier page stock and with the description of each subject written in numerical order in the margin, the color photos are an unappealing interruption.

I'm surprised the University of Wisconsin published this book this way. Why would they choose to cut corners on a subject of which they have such a proud history? They have so many other great books on prairie matters.

I found this a $25 disappointment. I'd be happy to give it away.

A more appropriate title would be "Natural Landscaping: As Seen By Your Dog".

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential resource
Natural Landscaping is an essential resource for anyone interested in landscaping with native plants. The importance of learning to use native plants is so importantas we face continuing droughts in various parts of the country, including here in Williamsburg, VA.The book is so full of information that I find myself going back to it often. Many thanks to the authors for this fine volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cogent, authoritative advice on how to restore wetlands
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Natural Landscaping: Designing With Native Plant Communities by licensed architect and landscaping authority John Diekelmann and natural plan restoration expert Robert Schuster is a fascinating, "user friendly" instructional guide on basic landscaping principles, as well as cogent, authoritative advice on how to restore wetlands and introduce native plant species for wetlands, grasslands, forests, and more. Black-and-white photographs as well as an inset section of color plates wonderfully illustrate this meticulous, fact-filled, professional quality, highly recommended "how-to" guide for anyone aspiring to enhance or restore native plant communities.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful resource
I have the 1982 edition of this book - I stumbled across it and have been amazed ever since that such a book was written in 1982 before this approach to gardening/landscaping was popular.
It is tailored to the midwest, but the technical solidity and sound design concepts should apply anywhere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Short review
I am an avid gardener, although I am an amateur at it. I like detail, but not the kind that requires brain surgery for you to figure out what the authors are trying to say.

This book is very easy to read, but chockfull of interesting "street savvy" information, along with formalknowledge about garden. This book has loads of detail, but it is writtenextremely well -- very down-to-earth and informal -- and the informationdoesn't overwhelm you all at once. You can jump in, look up whatever youneed in the index and then jump out without being overwhelmed. On the otherhand, if you want to find out every cotton picking thing about something, this is also a way to obtain in-depth information.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must have for the beginner and the pro!
This is the best gardening book in print. It covers trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, house plants. It is loaded with how-tos. It is by my side from January (planning stage) to the fall. Unbelievably helpful forany stage gardener.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive guide for landscapes and gardens
This is the book for people like myself who look at their yard and cringe in disgust."I know something is wrong w/it but where do I start???"This book helped me to understand, maintain and design alandscape. It has easy step-by-step illustrations for just about anygardening activity as well as when is the best time to do it!!It makes itso easy you don't have to think about it,just get your hands dirty...So ifyou want to plan and design a landscape for your yard and don't know whereto start or if your a seasoned gardener you will enjoy many of thepractical suggestions.Believe me,this book takes all the guesswork out ofgardening.5 stars w/out a doubt.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's like a cookbook for gardening!
This book has been a life saver for planning and planting a successful beautiful garden. The fundamentals (zones, light requirements, etc.) are well-explained.I was dissatisfied with the plans a landscaper drew up and ended up doing it myself with the help of this book.Couldn't have done it without this book!Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful reference guide to have!
I use this book daily during 'gardening season'! It has easy directions, clear diagrams, and extensive dictionaries of annuals, trees, shrubs, ground covers, etc. This book is also tree-mendously helpful in identifying problems in the garden - i.e., disease, bugs, etc. Each chapter also has a calendar of 'things to do' each month depending on where you live. 5-0 out of 5 stars Everything on attracting wildlife
This book is much, much more than I was expecting:it provides helpful and readable instructions on how to structure and manage your yard or acreage to attract a wide variety of wildlife.I especially appreciate the compendium of bird, bat, and bee box construction for various species.A chapter on designing hedgerows includes helpful tables of plants so the reader can select the desired characteristics (e.g., drought tolerant, native, forms a dense thicket, thornless) and easily determine the plants that fit the need.I rarely write book reviews, but this is exceptional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source for developing wildlife habitat
Landscaping for Wildlife in the Pacific Northwest

I have owned this book for several years now, and having applied the information Russell has provided here, I have found it truly helped us develop a wonderful little piece of habitat for our wild friends.
I highly recommend this book. Follow what works for your landscape situation, and as your gardens develop, so will the list of wildlife that makeyour property its permanent home

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to give away to friends and relatives!
This is my 4th or 5th purchase of this wonderful book.I have given all my copies away and need another for myself. It has great resources on the plants birds, insects and animals use for food, cover, etc. We made our voilet green swallow nest boxes from the plans in the book. We've watched new swallows peek out and take their first flight every year since we put them up.

We live in the foothills of Mt. Hood and it took me a few months after moving here to realize I shouldn't bring the invasive plants I used in town to the mountains. And I realized I could have turned my city home into a wildlife haven. The book is a great resources for all city, suburb or rural locales in the PNW.

It's just a wonderful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars more than just the Pacific Northwest
We live in Southern California so I was a bit dubious how useful this bookwould be. Happily, it still has much to offer for anyone wishing towildscape. There's plenty of general advice re. food/water/nesting sitesetc. and good plans for bird houses and bat houses. There's a nice chapteron attracting hummingbirds and butterflies, and plenty about creating andmaintaining water features (a huge attraction for wildlife in hot areaslike ours).

You will need to cross reference the plant lists againstwhat's native for your area, and find your own local native plantnurseries, but there's still lots of great advice here for wildlifegardeners that can be adapted to almost any region.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Follow-Up Collection
This is the second short story collection by E.N. Larsen and he continues to write solidly strange and funny stories. Grave-digging lawyers, Grandpa's sexual history, simple technology wreaking havoc, (even more) power-tripping cats, relationships with machines, subservient men (and dominant women), men with body dysmorphic disorder, (more) hapless losers, gender trouble, strange sex ed, militant door-to-door sales, mutually-assured destruction family style, killer bugs, girls with prostheses, (more) terrible parenting, drinking hair products, passive-aggressive professors, fighting over urine, Hitler's mustache, sexually confusing secretaries, and tractor driving as therapy. Again it's not a perfect collection for the same reasons I gave in the review of the first collection-- a few stories are too short or end abruptly in my opinion. But I give it five stars because the majority of the stories hold up, and the few that don't have promise. I read the whole thing in a few days. The two collections now sit proudly among my top thirty or so short story collections. As I said in the earlier review, the author that most reminds me of Larsen is Adam Bradford (whose sole short story collection "Dogwalker", while published by a major publishing house (Knopf), is woefully ignored). E.N. Larsen should be commended for setting such a high standard for self-published work. Let's hope someone takes notice and gets him a book deal.

Pick up "Revenge Through Landscaping" and "Let's Never Do That Again" now and say you knew him before he made it big. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource
This is one of my favorite TX landscaping books that stays out of the bookcase all through the growing season. You will find it invaluable as a resource to TX natives, especially if you are new to gardening the the Lone Star State.

The part I found most valuable is the breakdowns of the various planting regions. I don't think I would have had as much success with my landscape without this section.

Gardening in TX is hard enough what with trying to find native plants in the big box stores. All they seem to carry is a few cultivars that are only marginally successful in our brutal summers with year round water restrictions. This book gives you the skinny on how well native plants will do where you put them and how best to care for them.

I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Texas Gardeners
This book on Texas plants is the best one out there covering this subject. I have one and when I was living in Texas it was the best. No book comes close to this one in terms of plant information.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes less is not more
This book provides a good overview on the benefits of using native plants. When it comes to the plants included, however, the authors have an acknowledged bias toward South Florida, so it may not be the best choice if you are not in that part of the state. A more serious drawback is the photography. There are no photographs of residential landscapes using native plants, from which one might draw inspiration, and most of the plant profiles contain only one photo, generally a close-up, so one has no idea of the plant's shape or growth habit. A number of additional plants have been included in this updated edition, but rather than placing them under the appropriate category, they are appended at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Garden that Needs Little Care
This book was a great help in the planning and planting of native plants into our existing garden.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Using Florida Native Plants
Florida, with its four zones, has lost plenty of vegetation because of the population growth. In turn this has affected many plants and wildlife.Add to this the aggressive and invasive plants that have been introduced and our water issues and you have a problem.NATIVE FLORIDA PLANTS introduces you to these concerns and gives you numerous natives and their descriptions. The concise colorful pictures are a plus.

What grows near the coast may not do well forty miles inland.Plants that you may find in the Ocala National Forest or the Everglades may not prosper in Orlando or Tallahassee.Creating a native garden is the goal of this wonderful book. You'll find chapters on wildflower gardens and grassy meadows.Perhaps you are interested in welcoming wildlife and butterflies. With the extensive information found here you can choose what the pros and cons are to each plant.

Still worth five stars I would have liked to see more detailed information on our native oaks.I have a number of them in our yard and wanted to identify them using this book.Bark, acorns and leaves are different but because there wasn't enough of these pictures I am at a loss to discover what I have.Still, it is a great book and I am sure you will find something to benefit your piece of property and give you enjoyment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly practical
This is the most unique book I have ever read on gardening/landscaping.I was overwhelmed by the thought of landscaping a .44 acre lot, but she breaks the whole thing down into very manageable pieces and carefully outlines the RIGHT ORDER of doing things. Her writing style and sense of humor make this fun to read and not a CHORE like some of the others. This is one of two books I recently bought on landscaping:the other one I will likely shelve or sell!

5-0 out of 5 stars A little jewel
If you are looking for a book with lush color photographs of breathtaking gardens, this book is not for you.If you are looking for good solid practical advice regarding building the structural bones of your garden, you will hit the jackpot with this engaging little book.Written in an breezy style by a person who obviously has a sense of humor, you will learn how to properly grade your dirt, design your garden, plan your irrigation system and avoid making your yard into a swamp with small patches of the Sahara here and there. She even gives advice on defeating the wiliest of deer (deer can jump high, or jump wide, but not both). What's not to love about someone who describes juniper bushes as "the vermin of the plant world"?I also particularly liked her diagram on how to properly dig a pondand put in the liner so it doesn't just look like a plastic tarp-lined hole with rocks around the rim.I sat down and read it cover to cover, and felt empowered to go out and tackle what needed to be done.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a real gem!
Kate does an amazing job of sharing the hard lessons she's learned doing landscaping over the years. She also writes in a style that is very enjoyable to read.Even if you aren't in Northern California there are lots of great tips related to design, drainage, irrigation and planting.I found this book a real gold mine of tips and tricks, guaranteed to make any landscaping project go easier.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great book for Northern CA Landscape DIY'ers!
If you're embarking on your own northern California landscape installation project, this book will pay for itself very quickly. Author Kate Anchordoguy shares time- and money-saving landscaping advice in a casual and often opinionated manner. Having landscaped hundreds of yards, Kate reveals herself to be a seasoned pro who's learned...often the hard way...what to do and what not to do. She says, "If wisdom is measured by the mistakes we've made, I am very wise." Chapter 1 focuses on planning, shopping, and working efficiently (i.e. how to save time and money). Chapter 2 covers basic landscape design. Chapter 3 discusses construction projects and their timing. Chapter 4 addresses the all-important (and often ignored) subject of drainage. Chapter 5 teaches you how to prep and improve your soil. Chapter 6 covers irrigation. Chapter 7 teaches you how to "plant like a pro". The final chapter tackles lawn installation and renovation. Also tells you when it makes sense to hire out! ... Read more
