5-0 out of 5 stars Very effective.
My 10 year old is having fun with this book and learning very quickly from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome for young learners!
This product works well, with planning, for very young language learners. They get something really cool to show in the end for their experiences!

2-0 out of 5 stars Ideas that can be found elsewhere
This is a book that has some ideas for cute crafts, and a great cover that catches your eye, but as far as any meat or methods to teaching young children Spanish, I wasn't impressed. I have it on my shelf and still haven't found a way to incorporate it in my class. The "art projects" take too much time away from our speaking and absorbing of the language.

Students do like to do hands-on activities, but you get too involved in the construction paper with this. Of course, I'm biased, but there's not too much out there for this age group that's active, and not just a CD or DVD... so- Try Flip Flop Spanish instead, with a CD, lessons plans, glossary and flashcards. No gluing or pasting!

2-0 out of 5 stars waste of time
This book is cute, and if you don't know how to speak spanish, but claim to teach it, this book is a great way to waste time cutting, pasting, and coloring. However, thats about all this book is good for.If you are serious about teaching/learning spanish, this book is not for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very limited Spanish.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sara Review
I received the book in the condition that it was described. They also had great service in shipping me the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars If it's good enough for the Peace Corps...
Next to my mefloquine tablets, this was the next-most-used resource the PC gave me. "Short" and "comprehensive" are generally mutually exclusive, but this dictionary managed to strike a good balance. If you're looking for a desk reference, there are more comprehensive dictionaries around. But if you're looking for something that doubles as a portable language reference and something to throw at black mambas, this is it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but showing age
I got this Dictionary with Teach Yourself Swahili. The both of the books are showing age, but especially the dictionary. At least the Textbook had a word for Computer(Kompyuta) in it! The dictionary has the needed words though, don't get me wrong. The word "to look" is very important.

Oddly, I did find a use for the dictionary in a very modern reference though.I translate some Swahili from the Simpsons myself and it added up to the translation they had on TV, so hey! I guess that is a bad example, but their are few good Swahili dictionaries and this one is pocket sized.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise Swahili and English Dictionary : Swahili-English/Eng
I ordered this dictionary when I was writing my novel Death by Bad Magic, I needed to have my Priest to speak in one of Africa's oldest languages and if I had not had this wonderful dictionary to guide me I really don't think I could have written my novel.

2-0 out of 5 stars An Out-of-Date Resource for Swahili Vocabulary
This is a reprint of Perrott's dictionary that was first publishedin 1965 but based on much much earlier lexicographical work.It is a simple glossary with mostly single equivalencies given. The Swahili-English section is adequate for simple, basic sorts of vocabulary, but it contains none of the new terminology and vocabulary that has entered the language since the original lexicographical research was done. So, for instance, it would be inadequate for reading a modern Swahili newspaper, let alone a novel or modern play. Many of my students over the years have used this book and it was a useful tool given a lack of a pocket-sized Swahili dictionary that a student could easily carry around. But students had a lot of problems using the English-Swahili section of the book. Many times the gloss given for a particular English word, is not the correct one, or does not reflect modern meanings or usage. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the title speaks for itself
Having taught elementary and middle school, I am continually delighted to find new and useful ideas in this book.I have bought several copies as gifts for other teachers. This is the one book in my professional library that is always checked out by my peers. Its worth the investment!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Teachers
I am an English teacher in a high school and work with the population that struggles. This book gives great ideas for engaging students in writing.I love the idea about "romancing" writers. It really works.

4-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all!
This is a great resource for any teacher who wants to inform his/her writing instruction in their classroom.I feelthat this book helped me plan purposeful and authentic writing experiences for my students.A must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Super teaching help!
This book helps teachers explore the art of teaching with children. It has many teacher friendly lesson plans that coordinate well with 6 Traits teaching.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good "Starter" Book
This is not an in-depth, philosophical treatment of writing (though some may say the author accomplishes it indirectly), but an example after example fun activity tool for teachers--sprinkled with nuggets of wisdom throughout. For those who find such things useful (I don't necessarily) this latest edition includes rubrics, portfolio assessment, and writing across the curriculum.Even if you find only a small portion helpful, the purchase is worth the price.Suitable for primary through middle school.

4-0 out of 5 stars a very good grammar summary
this book is essentially a summary of arabic grammar, with particular attention paid to verbs but lots of detail on other subjects as well.time and again i've consulted this book, as it contains concise and thorough descriptions of most aspects of arabic grammar.its focus is completely on *modern* standard arabic and as such it contains clear descriptions of modern usages (including things such as "short" vs. "full" pronunciation, colloquial numerals and other important subjects that don't appear in most other grammar summaries [e.g. "A New Arabic Grammar", Haywood/Nahmad]), and carefully distinguishes usages that are technically part of the language but in fact obsolete or rarely used today.even the verb tables that fill much of the book are interesting because [among other things] the author chooses the most useful verbs and roots to exemplify the various possible types and includes lists of all the other common verbs, nouns, etc. made from the same root.my biggest complaint has to do with what's omitted.in particular, the "verb-based" focus means that the usage of verbs gets complete coverage, but other topics are skimped on.there is a real need for a concise but *complete* summary of the grammar of the *modern* literary language.another complaint is with the coverage of pronunciation -- there is a lot of good info on "full" vs. "short" pronunciation and on other topics [e.g. i didn't know that form VII and VIII verbs are never stressed on the first syllable in literary], but it's scattered throughout.it needs to be gathered together and augmented with the "informal" pronunciation [no case endings before pronoun suffixes, -ak/ik/uh instead of -ka/ki/hu, etc.], which this book denies even exists, but which must exist since it appears in "teach yourself arabic" and other places. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Useful
I have been using the Pimsleur method Pimsleur Comprehensive Mandarin Chinese Level 1 2 3 (48 Cds) Audio Cd I II IIIfor months now. It focuses on pronunciation of the words without any work on reading (the theory is apparently that one will have a better accent if one delays training on the written portion until after pronunciation is mastered). The grammer is all learned by example (which has it's positive side to be sure), but like some others I have had lingering confusion on some points of grammer I needed to resolve.

I picked up this small book (without the audio) at a used bookstore. I found it very helpful. In fact it is rather enjoyable to read, not dry and dusty grammer but creatively written and interesting. I am glad to finally know the Pinyin spelling of some of the words I have been using for months, and to have a better grasp of the "method to the madness" of Zhongwen sentence structure.

Anyone using Pimsleur or Michel Thomas will probably not really need the audio discs that go with this book. Likewise for a person being tutored.

4-0 out of 5 stars great on grammar, but weak on practice
The author is quite talented in the presentation of grammatical points. Her explanations of the structure of the language are intuitive and readable without being oversimplified or patronizing. This book contains awealth of grammatical information, much more than other beginning books Ihave seen, and always clearly explained.

Unfortunately, the book andtapes together contain only a small fraction of the amount of excercises, conversations, and other reinforcement that would be necessary to supportthe amount of vocabulary & grammar presented. The tapes are good, witha steadily increasing pace, but you would need more of them to really getpractice at listening. The readings are modern, friendly and interesting, but they are lacking in volume.Chapters 7-11 (out of 22) have such a highdensity of new vocabulary as to make the readings discouraginglydifficult.

If used by itself, this book may not be the best forself-study.However, I would recommend it as a supplement to any course. If you are having trouble with technical points of grammar, this book mightmake it easier for you.If you are taking a self-study program whichespouses the "conversation-only" approach and lacks thegrammatical information so useful to an intelligent adult, this book willprovide it.I plan to keep it close at hand as a reference. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A book well worth buying
The book is not only well written and organized but the examples of the written HTML and the pictures of the resulting web pages give the reader a very good background in writing and reading HTML. Using an older version of this book, I was able to create and publish my own web site a few years ago before I had ever seen any HTML.I bought another one because I lost the old one.

Do not be misled by the "24 Hours" thing; if you get the book today, don't expect to be able to see a webpage you designed tomorrow. However, if you apply yourself and spend a day or so on each lesson, you will learn more HTML from this book than from any other source available.

Sams Teach Yourself books are well worth the few bucks you may want to spend to get your own copy and you will want to use the following webaddress: http://www.24hourhtmlcafe.com/ where you can copy the pictures shown in the lessons to include in your own picture library.

I would rate this book as 5 stars if the pictures were in color.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great starting point
I didn't know any significant HTML prior to using this book. This book is a great starting point and will give anyone enough background to put up a pretty good page. I feel like I have gotten a good grasp of HTML from this book and now feel like I should branch out into Javascript to develop my pages further.

Oliver & Morrison offered good advice on what to do and what not to do when designing a webpage, and they also explained why they make those suggestions, which certainly assists in making later judgement calls on topics they don't directly address.

I would also recommend O'Reilly's HTML/XHTML book, which has come in handy in clarifying a few points. However, this book is sufficient for anyone looking to put up realatively simple pages and is easier as an introduction (and more motivating) than O'Reilly's book. That is, buy this book first and buy O'Reilly's book if you have a desire to learn more about HTML.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book.
I have been using a canned program to manage my company's web site, but I wasn't always able to do fine tune the pages the way I wished. So I decided to teach myself HTML. Working through this book, I was able to learn step by step how to design pages and manipulate the images and text. The book is very clear and concise and the exercises the author gives at the end of every chapter are extremely useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Up-To-Date Now - Thank you.
Having been out of web Development for a couple years, I needed confidence that my basic understanding was up to speed. This book HTML and XHTML in 24 hours, brought me up to date rather quickly. It provided the foundation that I needed both to build some basic web application prototypes, and to be able to begin reading more specialized books on Web Development.Specifically books on CSS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!

2-0 out of 5 stars You're not going to start learning French with this textbook, but...
The first version of TEACH YOURSELF FRENCH, by Sir John Adams with revisions by Norman Scarlyn Wilson, first appeared in 1939 and then was inexplicably kept in print for decades even as French society, the French language, and the practice of teaching French shifted radically. The version I have dates from the mid-1970s. Unlike many old textbooks, the problem with this old TEACH YOURSELF FRENCH isn't that it teaches rote learning and impractical translation exercises instead of real conversation (though it does that too), but rather that the authors try to be overly helpful in their presentation of grammar, to the point that the picture is actually more muddled. There's also zero discussion of punctuation and little presentation of greetings and everyday formalities.

I already known a decent amount of French, as I've traveled in the French-speaking world and I read French literature reguarly. I did find this volume useful in doing the English-French translation exercises, as there is a key in the back. This exercises are meant to produce French at a highly intellectual and upper-class level, even if it does all sound a bit quaint, so in that regard the book offers something that most contemporary French textbooks do not. But I'd seriously warn anyone against trying to take their first steps with the French language with this book. ... Read more

Through reading, discussion, and written analysis of works of fiction, folktales, poetry, and essays, students develop awareness of the common characteristics and important differences within and among genres. While students are growing in their understanding and appreciation of literature, they are also developing skills for approaching and analyzing future readings; moreover, written assignments responding to the literature help students to develop and express in-depth ideas. The concept of cyclic patterns of change serves as a unifying theme in the unit, with explorations of cyclic patterns evident in the structure and themes of the literature selections. Interdisciplinary connections with science, history, and the arts are also explored through unit activities, to strengthen understanding of the concept and its role in our lives and experiences. ...
