4-0 out of 5 stars Great Teacher Resource
I am using this book for bi-weekly tutoring sessions ! It is great for word patterns and fluency reading! I recommend it for teachers who use weekly poetry in the classroom!

4-0 out of 5 stars THIS WAS A CHRISTMAS GIFT
This was a Christmas gift for my daughter-in-law who is a 1st grade teacher. She had it on her wish list. She was very excited to receive this book so I believe that this would be a good book for a teacher or the parent of an elementary age child.

5-0 out of 5 stars not dumbed down
See the excerpts at Amazon to help you make your own decision. The cover has samples of poems. One of the excerpts gives some of the instructions for using the book. This is a creative and entertaining way to teach some phonics. It doesn't teach all of the word families but it does a great job with the ones it does teach. The delightful poems also help with memory skills because the poems are easy to remember. This gives a point of reference. On my website, there is a lot about memory skills for young children.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I hoped for.
I expected a book of poems that helped to teach the top 35 word families would have a vocabulary that was more in line with K-2 readers. Many of these poems will not be within the reading ability of children who are learning word families. I was promised many examples of the word families in each poem. Many of them only have a few family words, certainly not enough to help emergent readers gain any practice, especially with the higher vocabulary used through out the rest of the poem. Some of the poems are delightful, but on the whole, I was dissapointed with the book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.
With a title like "Lesson Plans for the Busy Librarian," this book seemed like a must have for me, a busy librarian. When I received the item I was very disappointed to find that none of the lessons were that unique or interesting. In addition to being the same old thing, the clip art is subpar, and the organization is very random. Let me just say this, I have owned the book for over a year and am yet to use a single lesson plan from it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money...
As a "busy librarian" the title drew the money from me in a hurry, but I was disappointed by the lack of depth- lots of coloring!Occasionally I use some of the reproducibles when I have a sub, however the quality of the graphics are poor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better books out there
I am an elementary school librarian. While this book has a few good lesson plans, I find the majority of them to be overly simplistic. Also, a lot of the graphics on the reproducibles are of very poor quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Time saver for teachers too!
Although directed to librarians, this book is also fantastic for elementary teachers. It's indexed to the Language Arts standards, learning styles and Multiple Intelligences. It contains patterns, instructions, hands-on activities and more, for literature-based multi-disciplinary units.A super resource! ... Read more

Product Description
Why do students often graduate from high school unprepared for college writing? And what can we do about it?

These are the questions that a group of classroom teachers set out to explore. Over the course of seven years, a group of middle, high school, college, and university teachers participated in a federally funded writing coalition project to implement innovative approaches to teaching writing. Together they developed this series of lesson plans designed to make writing both fun and an integral part of diverse curricula.

"Practical" is the recurrent motif of each teaching strategy. Developed by real teachers in real classrooms, the lessons are grouped into seven categories: writing process, portfolios, literature, research, grammar, writing on demand, and media.

Each lesson follows a standard format that includes purpose of the activity; necessary preparation; required props and materials; process and procedure for implementation; instructional pointers and/or possible pitfalls; and reflections from the teacher that provide "behind the scenes" insights. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
I was extremely disappointed by the lessons in this book. They are really nothing special at all and I don't think I found a single lesson in the book worth doing with my K-5 students. Two thumbs down.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't believe I bought this book!
Most of these lesson plans could be found elsewhere, for instance on state curriculum websites. The graphics are laughable. I wanted some new and different lesson plans, and these ideas are stale. Try "Funbrarian." Cheaper book, more FUN! ... Read more
