Product Description
A comprehensive guide to children's and adolescent fiction, traditional literature, and biography/autobiography dealing with the nationalities of the Soviet Union, this book is intended as a resource for teachers, librarians, and parents seeking to imbue young people with a sympathetic understanding of another culture. It indicates the breadth of publications in the field and offers guidance in selecting the most appropriate books. The annotated bibliography thoroughly describes 536 books written in or translated into English and published from 1900 to 1990, portraying the lives of Russian and Soviet immigrants in Europe and North America. The literature itself reflects more than a thousand years of history, from the establishment of Kievan Rus', the largest state of early-medieval Europe, through the Mongol invasion and the rise and fall of imperial Russia, to the establishment of the Soviet Union and the period of political and cultural ferment in the early 1990s. The sources are grouped according to major geographical and political regions (The Russian Federation; The Ukraine, Byelorussia, and Moldavia; Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania; Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan; Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan) and further divided by genres. Annotations generally provide plot summary, literary analysis and criticism, evaluation of illustrations, and information about literary and artistic awards. Reading and use levels are included with the citations. Indexes of author, translator, and illustrator, of titles, and of subjects are provided, with the latter referring to topical areas as well as historical periods and personages and geographical and political areas and terms. The volume introduction offers a survey of the Soviet lands and peoples and their literary activities, with special emphasis on literature for youth. ... Read more

While some of these dissertations have been cited in various sources, until now no definitive reference guide has brought together in a classified, annotated, indexed, and up-to-date manner the entire body of thesis literature on China and Inner Asia written between 1976 and 1990. Included are more than 10,000 entries for dissertations in the humanities and the social sciences, law, medicine, theology, engineering, and other disciplines, with more than half of these works not cited in Dissertation Abstracts International. The entries are classified and grouped together in topical chapters, and the volume includes a detailed table of contents, thousands of cross-references, and three extensive indexes to facilitate use. Each entry includes considerable bibliographic information and a descriptive annotation. The volume also includes information on the availability of the dissertations from UMI, the British Library Document Supply Centre, and other sources worldwide. ... Read more

Product Description
The book represents the results of a synchronic and diachronic cross-African survey of quotative indexes. These are linguistic expressions that signal in the ongoing discourse the presence of a quote (often called ""direct reported speech""). For this purpose, 39 African languages were selected to represent the genealogical and geographical diversity of the continent. The study is based primarily on this language sample, in particular on the analysis of quotative indexes and related expressions from a text corpus of each sample language, but also includes a wide range of data from the published literature on other African as well as non- African languages. It is the first typological investigation of direct reported discourse of this magnitude in a large group of languages. The book may thus serve as a starting point of similar studies in other geographical areas or even with a global scope, as well as stimulate more detailed investigations of particular languages. The results of the African survey challenge several prevailing cross-linguistic generalizations regarding quotative indexes and reported discourse constructions as a whole, of which two are of particular interest. In the syntactic domain, where reported discourse has mostly been dealt with under so- called sentential complementation, the study supports the minority view that direct reported discourse and also a large portion of indirect reported discourse show hardly any evidence for the claim that the reported clause is a syntactic object complement of some matrix verb. With respect to grammaticalization, the work concludes that speech verbs are, against common belief, not a frequent source of quotatives, complementizers, and other related markers. Far more frequent sources are markers of similarity and manner; generic verbs of equation, inchoativity, and action; and pronominals referring to the quote or th ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and essential reference tool
Many of today's readers - including many Shakespeare scholars - do not realise how frequently Shakespeare uses, or adapts, proverbs or similar sayings current and popular in his day. Thus, as not even the Oxford English Dictionary is strong in this area, a good reference book listing the proverbs we find in Shakespeare is quite indispensable: without it, we frequently cannot understand his originality and/or contact with 'folk wisdom" of his day, and even run the risk - quite often - of simply misunderstanding what he says. This compilation by Dent is generally recognised as the best of its kind: while much help is also provided by M.P. Tilley's famous Dictionary of the Proverbs in England in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries (1950), and by F.P. Wilson's updated Oxford Dictionary of English Proverbs (1970), Dent is yet more comprehensive. He might have offered more explanation of the meaning of the proverbs, but usually that becomes clear from the many examples he quotes. A REPRINT IS VERY MUCH NEEDED. - Joost Daalder, Profesor of English, Flinders University (South Australia) ... Read more

Overshadowed for many years by the Nuremberg trials, the Tokyo Trial--one of the major events in the aftermath of World War II--has elicited renewed interest since the 50th anniversary of the war's end. Revelations of previously hidden war crimes, including comfort women and biological warfare, and the establishment of international courts to try Yugoslav and Rwandan war criminals have added to the interest. This bibliography addressees the renewed interest in the Tokyo Trial, providing over 700 citations to official publications, scholarly monographs and journal articles, contemporaneous accounts, manuscript collections, and Web sites. Also included are sources on the Trial's influence on international law and military law and unresolved issues being debated to this day. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the Best but sufficient
This isn't a comprehensive dictionary, the page count should tell you that. However, it is helpful to use as a reference point when reading emerging and established Igbo authors like Chinua Achebe, Chris Abani and C. Ngozi Adichie. Readers should bear in mind that Igbo is a language with many dialects. As an Igbo person, I'd recommend this book to others who were interested in the language. However, because of its limitations and odd decisions (why spell chi as ci?), I wouldn't pay more than $15 for it. Just keeping it real.

2-0 out of 5 stars What an .....ifele?
Being 50% Ibo(that's how my relatives spelled it), I thought it might be nice to learn a bit of the language of a people that make up half my being so I bought this book for a sum signifigantly less than it is offered for on this site at a used book store. I got a bit concerned when I found a bunch of spelling contradictions with the root words for Igbo names as they appeared in a book that I have on that subject("Igbo Names" by Ebo Ubahakwe)as well as running at odds with the spellings of the names of my cousins, uncles and aunts(the name element Chukwu is spelled Cukwu). That's bad enough, but when I couldn't find one of the few words one of my cousins taught me (Gommen, I think, a general greeting)in the 'G 'section at all, I started to get upset. Now I learn that roughly 2/3 of the language isn't even represented, so any thoughs of trying to speak Igbo in Nigeria without looking like either an ignorant/stupid foreigner or a primitive are out of the question. There isn't even an in-depth pronounciation guide in here! Still, it's better than nothing and you don't have to worry about tone if you're using it to translate dialogue or something similar. It's too short for regular dictionary standards let alone translation dictionaries, being a scant 283-page total while the Merriam-Webster's Spanish-English dictionary I have is a whopping 733-pages and the Harrap's Concise French and English Dictionary has a whole 997 pages! A half-way decent start but they need to release an expanded volume or three to make amends for this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars A second step in a proverbaial 1000 miles journey
This is a commendable work. Igbo dictionaries no longer exist in the air.Now there is one to read and critique! However, there is no justification whatsoever for the author's introduction of a new orthography for thelanguage. Tone marking was grossly neglected. If this dictionary is to beused by non-native speakers it has to be revised with tones adequatelymarked, and the alphabet made to conform with existing Igbo orthography. The author may take refuge in the fact that standardization wise thelanguage appears to be in a state of flux. But, a dictionary is the properavenue towards a standard. In that regard the dictionary falls a littleshort of expectation. Most of the entries are correctly translated intoEnglish, attesting to the authors sound command of both Igbo and English.

2-0 out of 5 stars off-base dictionary
Professor Echeruo knows too well that Igbo people live both in the eastern and mid-western parts of Nigeria. The map in the dictionary, while showing this fact, claimed that the Igbo live in eastern part of Nigeria. Also,Mike knows too well that the alphabet "c" does not exist in Igboorthography. "Chi" is inseparable with the Igbo in philosophy andcosmology. Would Professor Echeruo wish that we begin to spell it"Ci"? I believe that the "dictionary" can be vastlyimproved with many omitted words and better production.

2-0 out of 5 stars "ch" becomes "c", "k" becomes "c" dictionary
The excitement of having a dictionary authored by one of our respected scholars everporates as soon as one sees the "dictionary" itself. Pink cover, few pages, over two thirds of Igbo words ignored. Tinylettesets, and the whole bit. Why? ... Read more
