The buyer was really honest with me, and I encourage you to with him. I had a successful experience with him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent commentary on Contract law
Farnsworth on Contracts is an excellent resource to any student of contract law. The explatnations and review are invaluable and deepen the understanding of concepts and application of the law for success on tests

3-0 out of 5 stars Good read - comprehensive
This is an excellent primer for Contract law by a reknowned author. Would recommend it as a must-have for any law student taking Contracts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Casenotes--Worthless...don't buy it
Worthless...description was totally different than the actual product.Very disappointed. If I could rate this with no stars that is what it would receive from me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Farnsworth....
My contracts professor worships this guy and assigns regular readings from this text. I really don't understand the overwhelmingly positive reviews. I find Farnsworth's style to be horribly boring and his explanations, while excellent, are much more easily obtained from other sources. For example, the E&E for contracts touches on most of the same concepts (albeit in less detail) as Farnsworth, in a much more readable and understandable format. Chemerinsky's "ship book" is also an excellent supplement. For diehard contracts junkies, Farnsworth probably rocks, but if you're just looking to understand the information and do well in class, I would go with some other book. ... Read more

Product Description

Praise for the first edition:

"A fascinating concept, full of knowledgeable gems put in the most frank of styles ... A book to sample when the time is right and to come back to when another time is right, maybe again and again." – David A. Simmonds, Building Engineer Magazine

  • Is there a difference between inspecting and supervising?
  • What does ‘time-barred’ mean?
  • Is the contractor entitled to take possession of a section of the work even though it is the contractor's fault that possession is not practicable?

Construction law can be a minefield. Professionals need answers which are pithy and straightforward, as well as legally rigorous. The two hundred questions in the book are real questions, picked from the thousands of telephone enquiries David Chappell has received as a Specialist Adviser to the Royal Institute of British Architects.

The material is considerably updated from the first edition – weeded, extended and almost doubled in coverage. The questions range in content from extensions of time, liquidated damages and loss and/or expense to issues of warranties, bonds, novation, practical completion, defects, valuation, certificates and payment, architects’ instructions, adjudication and fees. Brief footnotes and a table of cases are included for those who wish to investigate further.

This will be an invaluable reference for architects, project managers, contractors, QSs, employers and others involved in construction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Casenotes Keyed to Calamari
This is an absolute MUST for ANY Law student taking CONTRACTS with Calamari as the main text! I have actually cut my Study time & Writing time CONSIDERABLY with this "Miracle" Study Aid. ALL The topics & cases in the text are condensed & made simple for briefs both verbal & written. IF USING THE CALAMARI TEXT, DON'T TAKE CONTRACTS WITHOUT IT!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book.
Good Contracts Hornbook for supplemental material in a Contracts I & II course for 1Ls.I use in connection with Farnsworth on Contracts and feel like they are two great hornbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mutual Mistake, The Mailbox Rule, and Other Legal Fictions
"Hornbooks" are summaries of a body of law used by angst-ridden law students to amplify and clarify the often arcane materials contained in Casebooks. The law of Contracts is one of the primary building blocks of a first year legal education, along with Property and Torts. Almost every 1L has a small library of these dark green encyclopedic volumes that weigh in by the kilogram.

CALAMARI AND PERILLO ON CONTRACTS is one of the few Hornbooks (along with PROSSER AND KEETON ON TORTS) that is considered an acceptable, though not authoritative, treatise for purposes of legal citation. Of course, cases themselves trump any other source material.

This is a very good, albeit very, very dense discussion of the Law of Contracts, which is one of the most intellectually challenging areas of the law. Most of the great legal theorists were Contracts specialists.

Most of our Common Law is a variation on Contract law---Torts is a violation of the Social Contract resulting in civil injury; Criminal law is a violation of the Social Contract resulting in wrongs punishable by incarceration or other sanctions; Property is all about implied (or express) contractual understandings as to the holding of title and interest; even Civil Procedure and Evidence are forms of Contract, a system of agreed-upon rules for conducting cases.

The sheer density of the material in CALAMARI AND PERILLO ON CONTRACTS makes this book less helpful than it might be to an overwhelmed law student. A typical 1L just doesn't have the time to parse and unpack this mahogany block of a text. There are other books out there that are more quickly and easily accessible, but none that acheives the depth of this particular volume. It is a "must have" for anyone serious in familiarizing themselves with the realm of Contracts.

So many years after the intellectual concentration camp that is First Year Law School, I find that perusing Hornbooks for interesting minutiae can be a rather enjoyable way spend a rainy, quiet afternoon. It's too bad that most law schools make grasping the underpinnings of the U.C.C. feel like root canal without novocaine. Law has a beauty that is often ruined by legal education.

If you plan to carry your Hornbooks around, get yourself a litigation case on wheels; it'll spare you a future of back problems.

2-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT THE HORNBOOK!! THIS IS A DIFFERENT BOOK!!! "SEARCH INSIDE" IS MISLEADING!!!
THIS IS NOT THE PAPERBACK VERSION OF THE HORNBOOK. THIS IS A CANNED-OUTLINE WRITTEN BY THE AUTHORS OF THE HORNBOOK. DOES NOT REFERENCE CASES SPECIFICALLY OR OFFER A DETAILED ANALYSIS. MORE OF A "STUDY AID" ON PAR WITH EMMANUEL'S. FOR SOME REASON AMAZON CONFLATES THIS BOOK WITH THE HORNBOOK SERIES AND OFFERS IDENTICAL RECOMMENDATIONS AND DESCRIPTIONS FOR BOTH! DO NOT BUY THE PAPERBACK IF YOU WANT THE HORNBOOK!!

3-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Edition better than 3rd
In my course materials I was told I had to buy the 3rd edition, so I purchased it, and it turned out the seller had made a mistake and sent me the 2nd edition. When I received it, I contacted the seller and the seller never got back to me, so I purchased the 3rd edition and kept the 2nd thinking I would sell it later.I started listening to the 2nd edition while the 3rd one didn't arrive, and realized that, for my class, it made NO difference that it wasn't the 3rd.The 3rd edition finally arrived, and when I listened to it I noticed that actually the 2nd edition had a much better flow, less tangents, and the cases were more applicable to my case book.So I ended up selling my 3rd edition and using the 2nd.I then proceeded to remove the negative feedback I had left for the seller (sorry!).2nd A LOT better than 3rd.Should cost more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent light intro before each assignment
This is the only supplement I used for assignments besides the rules. However for outlining it is useful, but Emanuel fares better. As with any Nutshell book, coverage is spotty at times, but the quick and easy understanding is all that is needed before delving into assignments.

If looking for a fully extensive and in-depth treatment of Contracts, use E&E.Our professor is straightforward so this was the only coverage needed.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good entry to a 1Ls Kindle Collection
The price is right, the book is formatted correctly and includes hyperlinks to chapters and topics within chapters. The material is on par with the other commercial outline/study aids I've used or seen. For a law student in the market for a kindle-friendly study aid, this book is a safe bet.

Please don't misunderstand the somewhat restrained praise I have for this book: I only just got it today and haven't identified any areas where the text is weak or short on detail. They could be out there, but my initial impression is that this is a great product in a very convenient format that definitely deserves 4 stars. I only wish I could speak more firmly on the book's content without misleading anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars True to Its Name
Contracts in a Nutshell, true to its name, is very useful in learning an understanding the basic principles of Contract law. I recommend that someone interested in Contracts read it and Contracts Examples & Explanations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and easy to understand

Product Description

In this volume Mitchell examines case law, academic debate and the resurgence of interest in formalist contract interpretation in the US to explore the meaning of contextual interpretation, arguments for and against it and suggestions on how parties may influence the interpretation methods applied to their agreement.

Identifying controversial issues, arguments and analyzing possible future developments, this book addresses a range of questions, including:

  • How far should it be possible for courts, through the process of interpretation, to control the bargain made between parties?
  • Are judges applying the principles of interpretation in the same way?
  • What is the relevant context of an agreement?
  • Should contracting parties be able to opt out of a particular interpretative approach by use of mechanisms such as entire agreement clauses?

Short and concise, this is a useful reference tool for those interested in contract and tort law.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Clear, Well-Edited Case Book
Chances are, if you're reading this review, you're a student who's been assigned this book for your introductory Contracts class. If you have, you're in luck, because this is one of the clearest case books that I read as a first year law student.

If, on the other hand, you're a law professor who's considering reading or using this book for one of your classes, please give this book a fair chance as it's well written, well-edited, and provides a clear picture that helps prevent your students from having that look of desperation that's so common during the first year of law school.

Contracts was not my favorite course from my first year of law school (far from it, in fact) but this book is what made the course bearable for me. The format of the book is simple, and in its simplicity is brilliant.

Each chapter begins with a clear and concise introduction, providing the student with the basic vocabulary necessary to understand the material that that chapter covers.

The chapters are further broken up into sections. Each section also begins with a brief, but well-written and clear introduction, which guides the student gently into the ideas that are about to be covered. After this introduction, there is usually a list of the Restatement and U.C.C. provisions that are relevant to the material about to be covered. Then there's a case or two, followed by questions and notes on the material just covered. This is followed by a couple more cases, which are also followed by questions and notes, and thus ends that section, to be followed by a section that is structured similarly.

It's a simple formula, and it works. The introduction orients the students successfully. The Restatement and U.C.C. provisions provide general rules that are then applied in the first case or two. Note materials and questions following those first cases are provided to get the student thinking. The next couple cases provide exceptions to or variations on the general rule. Note material sums it up and then the student is ready to move on to the next topic.

This books is one of the prettier ones in my collection (with the faux-leather cover) and doesn't get destroyed easily like the books published by Aspen. Also, it's only about an inch and a quarter thick, which meant it was the only book I didn't hate dragging around for a semester.

I'm really glad this was the book I used for my intro-Contracts class.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a Former Student: This is the Model of all Casebooks.
In what generally can be categorized as unreadable, dense, unorganized and without clear themes, Professor Burton's textbook for law students is a clear aberration.Professor Burton presents contract law in a clearoutline fashion, divided into different and inciteful principles.Caseswithin each principle clearly present individual "trees" and inthe end, the reader comes out with a very clear and workable picture of the"forest."Professor Burton does not "hide the ball" inthe form of ongoing, mindless and unreadable "Notes andQuestions."

All law professors and aspiring law professors shouldconsider Burton's text as the standard and the model to which all legaltexts should aspire.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for practicing legal English for contracts and companies
This book is a star in its class, with such a rich depth of materials on contracts and company scenarios that the individual who is interested in self-study will find plenty to keep them busy for weeks on end.The format includes several chapters on each of various contract and company scenarios. The case details are included - in all their complexity. This involves the student at a deep level in the reading exercise.Questions are then put forth regarding the cases which pose issues requiring the use of vocabulary, as well as a grasp of the legal principles in operation in order to answer various types of quizzy questions. The exercises are interesting and not only reinforce 'legal English' learning, but also correct misconceptions as to the meaning of specific legal constructs - for example, the intention of ordering what we call 'damages' as a remedy in court.Exercises also include guidance in the form of notes, tips, useful to even a seasoned practitioner.I recommend this as a self-study textbook at the moderately advanced level. Also noting: this resource really teaches law as well as the language, which makes it an effective learning tool on both levels. The context is British English, but the import is international in scope. As usual with the exercise books, a key in the back provides the answers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dealing out the right lawcards for core law areas

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

We're often asked which materials we would recommend for Contract Law revision purposes for law students when they become increasingly aware of the approaching `E' day - such advice is normally sought around February time when the weather is grim and the prospects seem even grimmer as the exam entry forms are completed.

Well for them it'll be `D' day (`D' being for deliverance) if they use these well-tried and well-tested publications from Cavendish. But, make sure you get the most recent edition each time for the new legal developments which have taken place, either by statute or in case-law, in the intervening years between editions.

We don't make these statements lightly because the lawcards are of a high standard which the law student will definitely require to compliment the working textbooks and casebooks used throughout the year.Lawcards give a form of revision notes which it would be hard to match with such notes as are taken by internal students during actual lectures. And they do provide the instant memory test which is needed to trigger the brain into action as it competes with nerves on exam day. They're not a crutch but merely an aide memoire which starts the memory process off.Recent case-law references and the comments made about Law Commission recommendations and other sources give these cards extra `clout'.

With the lawcards, the structure is the key and you will find it opens the door to a world which is yours to write about. It's your script and your future. However, it is not a copied key that opens the door. It must be the original if you want to obtain a good classification. If you have ever had an additional door key cut, you will always know that it's a copy because the original just has `something' about it.That `something' is normally `wear and tear' as the shiny newness has gone but the dependability is there (we hope).

Well, Contract Law "lawcards" comprise that `dependability' we hope for to allow the refreshing of memory and should always be included in the bibliography for your revision programme. They are the means by which you can create an original with all the attributes that have gone before.Your answers in the exams will focus your mind and that imposter, the irrelevance, will be excluded as they're in these publications.

Also, what we find particularly attractive about the lawcards is that they do not encourage `parroting' which is the bane of the examiner's existence. We can say from experience that it's always refreshing to find a script which has some originality about it, mixed with a good understanding of legal principles and case-law. What examiners do not like is the lazy student who has clearly not thought about the subject. The cards act as guides, so you have the tools and there's no reason why you can't complete the job... a job very well done indeed if you use the Contract lawcards.
