Good Overview/Start
This book is a good overview, if you are just starting, but you will need other references for more indepth knowledge to understand the subject adequately.

I was very pleased with this book.It is full of important information and explained in a very clear and easily understood way.I definately recommend this book for anyone who is starting up, or already involved with a non profit looking to better understand the process.

Made me feel much better prepared.
A very helpful book for anyone starting, operating, or directing a small nonprofit. It covers some material (e.g., SOX compliance, foundation structure) which I suspect would only be useful to people who are more likely to hire a lawyer than read a For Dummies book; however, much of it is quite applicable to small churches, community organizations, or other small-scale operations. Hopefully the executive director of the American Red Cross has moved on to more advanced texts.

Broadly, the book deals with two topics: the regulatory interfaces a non-profit must be prepared to navigate and how a non-profit should be structured from the standpoint of strategic management. If you are starting from near-zero knowledge of these two topics, you will end up feeling much better prepared when you're done.

My primary interest in reading the book was to be better informed about a professional association I have recently become involved with. Most of the book--and indeed, most of the non-profit sector--is geared toward traditional charitable organizations, but it does go to lengths to explain the differences between the different kinds of of non-profit structures recognized by the IRS. I'm glad to have read it.

Stuffy
This was the first book I pick up regarding the Muslim religion and I recommend starting somewhere else. This book is written with great detail which one may think is a good thing but I personally though made it a trying read. I was forced to re-read several paragraphs just to grasp the concepts. This book digs into the seeming complicated religious law but without adding any real life to it. I do recommend if your aim is to understand a fully as possible. It did mention several concepts other books did not.

Interesting But Sprawling
I read this recently for my seminar on Islamic law.Weiss brings up some great insights as he discusses Islamic law, but I found many of his chapters to be meandering works where I got a little lost.He never uses section headings within a chapter and sometimes I found myself unclear about where he was going with his ideas.It's a very dense text and makes the best sense when reread.Also, as a student, I found the skimpy index unhelpful when I needed to go on a treasure hunt for a buried quote.

The history of how such laws were formulated makes for an involving read
Muslim legal science is a science connected to yet separate from Islamic faith, and THE SPIRIT OF ISLAMIC LAW delves into these connections and differences, examining the main features of Muslim jurisdiction and law, divine texts which are used as legal foundations, interpretations in the attempt to capture the devine as it relates to legal matters, and more. very good primary source material
Although this book is admittedly not the most accessible one in it's class, it is one of the most useful if you have the time and desire to delve into the issues of sex and the law in depth. The book is comprised almost entirely of court decisions, and as such is an invaluable compendium of source material. If you're looking for a brief overview look elsewhere, but if you want a roundup of relevant court decisions this is an excellent reference.

Expose of "The Law"
Dr. Noonan's book, "Persons and Masks of the Law" is the best I have read in terms of informing its readers of what really goes on below the surface of what we commonly consider to be "The Law."It shows its undersurface, and how it is invariably a question of the personalities and prejudices of those who administer the law.Noonan's mind, and analyses are brilliant.

Scholarly Analysis of an American Legal Phenomenom
Combining a fascinating legal analysis with legal history, [now Senior Judge] John Noonan has written a fine book. Tracing the jurisprudence of some major legal minds from three different periods in American history, Noonan demonstrates how a preoccupation with LAW as a detached set of rules with a life of its own can lead to the obscuring of the human element in law.

Rules are clearly necessary to an orderly society and to the adjudication of disputes between parties, but rules are conceived of in the minds of people and are applied by people to cases and controversies involving people. An overemphasis upon law as a detached science of rules can allow for the creation of rules that obscure the humanity of people who are subjected to them. These sorts of rules Noonan describes as "masks." (Masks are to be distinguished from "roles," which people assume, but which they are not consumed by.)

Noonan's chronicling of George Wythe and (his student) Thomas Jefferson's legal involvements with the old slave codes provides a stark example of how masks have been used in the history of American law. That section was particularly interesting from a scholarly and historical standpoint, as Noonan describes them in all their utter brutishness, proceeding to delve into the (hypocritical) political, economic and social purposes for which they were created.

Also interesting is Noonan's analysis of Oliver Wendell Holmes' legal thinking and how that thinking was employed in the U.S. Supreme Court case of American Banana Co. v. United Fruit Co. (1909). In this reviewer's opinion, there is greater moral ambiguity in the case of sovereign immunity than there is with chattel slavery, but Holmes clearly employed a mask in the American Banana case. Noonan does a fine job of describing the backdrop to the case and all the major players involved in the litigation.

Finally, Noonan discusses Cardozo's masking of the plaintiff in the infamous Palsgraf case from the New York Court of Appeals. This was fun to read, as Palsgraf is one of those cases all law students read in their first-year torts classes.

It would probably prove too much to say that this book has appeal for a wide audience. In all likelihood, only those who are seriously interested in legal scholarship and legal history will find it of interest. Much of the analysis takes place at a high level of abstraction. But given that the book is originally based upon a prestigious serious of law lectures, it should satisfy its intended audience. ... Read more

Read it twice, at least
I picked this up at the urging of my career services office, and I was not disappointed.Upbeat, friendly, straightforward, and accessible, the book is both helpful and encouraging.

Some of the advice may not seem profound--most of us know to be nice to support staff and many of us know which water glass at a formal dinner is ours--but you are bound to learn a few new things. Considering how much is at stake, it probably isn't a bad idea to review even some of the basics either.

I also think the book helped me secure my summer clerkship--especially the discussions of the economics of law firms and the insights into how hiring partners think.

Um...yeah
This book is well written and has a lot of do's and don'ts of the practical legal world. The author speaks a lot about what to do on the job and frequently gives a few good ideas. A huge percentage of those ideas are supported by real-life anecdotes from various legal professionals. The major problem I had with it, is that throughout almost the entire book I kept finding myself saying, "Yeah, duh." As just one of many many potential examples, there is an anecodote about a summer clerk who goes into a firm, whines that he needs his own office and is allowed to use the office of a lawyer who is out sick. The lawyer wants to connect to her computer from home, so the summer clerk is told he absolutely cannot touch the computer. The clerk does so anyway thus preventing the lawyer from being able to connect to the computer and gaining for the clerk the contempt of everyone in the office. There are a lot of little stories like this where somebody does something just blatantly stupid (and a smaller number where somebody does something blatantly correct). Some of the stories are amusing but are almost always connected to advice that seems really obvious. If you think you have really poor judgement then by all means read this book.

I also found the organization a little irritating. There were no distinct chapter breaks. Although it's got a very methodical organization scheme, it READS as though it's one big continuous text. I like to read at night and stop at the end of a chapter. I kept feeling as though if I were to stop reading I would be cutting an idea midstream and that irritated the heck out of me.

In the book's defense, it is well written and the text flows nicely. There's a wonderfully colloquial feel to how it reads.
I've been reading a lot of law school prep-type books of late and this one was not my favorite. It's not terrible, but it doesn't seem entirely useful to me either.

Decent book, but mostly common sense.
This book was very informative as far as a typical 9-5 workday of a lawyer, but most of her strategies are common sense. Seriously, anyone who doesn't know business manners shoudln't be a lawyer anyway. Its common sense to dress appropriately, to never crack raunchy jokes to a partner, or to speak of how hot another attorney's wife is. If you have any common sense, spend your money on a more practical book with better advice or educational value.

Read it early in law school.
Great advice on making the most out of clerkships, classes, professors, law review, and volunteering opportunities that arise in law school.I wish I had read this book before going to law school.

Useful at any point...
I'm a starting 1L at Univ. of Houston Law this Fall and bought this book initially because the title got my attention. Boiled down, it's a refreshingly informal "How to" guide for summer internships and new associates. Some of the advice (e.g. on etiquette) might strike you as "Yeah, well of course...everyone knows that", but that doesn't mean we can't benefit from the occasional reminder! The bulk of the advice in the book though will be new information and most helpful in avoiding the common pitfalls...someone else has been there already and either done it very well or done it very badly - this book helps you benefit from their experiences.
There's commentary throughout from practicing law firm recruiters, associates, partners, professors - seems that input is included from just about every facet of the legal world. The book is primarily of value (I think) for it's new associate centric advice (versus summer internship or while you're in law school). That being said, as a soon to be 1L it was definitely valuable to me to get a sense beforehand of how law firms do business (particularly before I even begin shopping for internships.

Solid
Good Intro to Am Law. Straight forward. I'm taking a class from the teacher right now and he's pretty good.

Good as a broad survey, but a little tedious at times
I just finished reading this book because it is on the suggested reading list that I received from the law school I am entering this fall.As far as a broad survey which puts the American legal system in a broad context, this book does a very good job.However, as I got to the last hundred pages or so, it turned to a lengthy and at times redundant expression of a thesis that the author had already suggested several times in the book.And really, like a lot of scholarly arguments, this one isn't all that enlightening.What would have been more useful (for me at least) is a more indepth treatment of the specific subject matter which the chapters are divided into.For this kind of survey I would suggest Law 101 by Jay M. Feinman

An excellent introduction to the American legal system
If you want a reasonably good understanding of the what, how, and why of the American legal system without having to go to law and grad school, this is the book for you.Friedman, in just over 300 pages of text, manages to cover the entire field of law in America, from legislation through administration to judgment, from the workings of the local sewer district to the trappings of the Supreme Court.

Friedman is a renowned legal scholar, but this should not scare away the legal neophyte.He has done a remarkable thing for a renowned scholar to do -- he has written an introduction that truly is an introduction!The writing is clear, straightforward, and devoid of all but the most essential legal jargon, and, when the jargon is unavoidable, it is clearly explained.Further, the book is notable for its lack of endless recitation of court decisions.While Friedman disscusses most of the important cases, he does not expect the reader to slog through them.And he is excellent at connecting the cases -- and the law in general -- to real-life events easily within the experience of ordinary people.

If you are already familiar with American law you will probably learn nothing new here.It is, nevertheless, a good, refreshing read.Finally, for those of us that teach in this area, particularly in undergraduate education, this is an excellent teaching book. ... Read more

Notes for a Longer Book
I don't know why The Ages of American Law is regarded as a classic of American legal history.It's clearly written but tries to cover way too much ground in a very short space (111 pages of text with large print and big margins).Based on a series of lectures, The Ages of American Law strings together short observations on legal topics ranging from Lord Mansfield to the development of the Uniform Commercial Code.No subject is developed in depth:at best, the "book" is notes for a real book.One of my professors at law school used to rave about this book.It must have been because he's mentioned favorably in an endnote.

engaging intellectual history
A very interesting history of American law, useful for those about to enter the legal profession or enroll in law school, or anyone wishing to learn more about the history of ideas in law.

A concise classic.
When Lawrence M. Friedman wrote his landmark "A History of American Law," he remarked that American legal history has been a neglected field. Some progress (although not enough) has been made in the field since Friedmanpublished his History in 1973. Part of that progress has been thepublication of Grant Gilmore's little book, "The Ages of American Law,"which is justly considered to be a classic. The book is based on thelectures Gilmore gave during the 150th Anniversary of Yale Law School forthe Storrs Lecture Series in 1974. Although "The Ages of American Law" isan "expanded" version of the Storrs Lectures, the book is still remarkablefor its concision as well as for its clarity. It looked new but...
I ordered the Entertainment Law book from the amazon store becasue I wanted to purchase a new book, without highlights or writing in it, but I received the book with the bind holding on by the seams (literally)!Because I was so pressed for time and did not want to wait another 4-5 days to return it, I kept the book.Other than the unraveling book, the delivery was prompt and book appeared to be in good condition

Somewhat Helpful
I would basically have to agree with Jen's review about this book. There are too many cases, the book is huge and the font is small...especially in the notes sections. The inclusion of various types of contracts has its plusses and minuses. I feel as if the contracts are stuck in the book in their entirety, but they're not necessarily explained. Thus, even if you're in law school, you're reading the contracts, not understanding the language and then not getting an explanation of the contracts. It's almost the same as reading the contracts as a complete layperson. The worst part is that there are tons of these contracts. Someone who taught this course as an adjunct at my law school assigned pretty much all the contracts in the book to read.

Obviously, they are not captivating reading, so if you're in this position you can get stuck reading boring contracts that you don't understand and a professor who assigns all these contracts to read but doesn't explain them well enough--either because he's a lawyer in this field and it makes way more sense to him than to you and/or because he's a practicing attorney rather than a real law professor and, thus, doesn't really know how to teach. I think both applied in my situation, and, unfortunately, people teaching entertainment law oftentimes will be practicing attorneys and/or completely over your head with knowledge.

I don't feel as if this book is well-written, and sometimes the contracts aren't the only things that don't make sense or aren't explained well enough. Terms are thrown out or descriptions/explanations of the industry are given sometimes in ways that don't help someone who knows nothing about it...or at least doesn't know about the areas being covered by a particular chapter. I'm not just talking about the legal aspects; I am also referring to the actual industry itself and the way things work in it. That makes this book much worse than the average legal casebook. And with the size of this book--and, as a result, the amount of material covered in it--a lot of stuff that doesn't always make sense is thrown at you, and that's hard to deal with, even for a law student. And with other books I've seen and/or read on the market that explain the entertainment industry, this book could easily be less in-depth/complicated and shorter, even including the same amount of cases.

In other words, this book is just not brought down to a dummy's level enough, or even enough to be taught in law school. And it takes what should be an interesting subject and makes it completely devoid of intrigue. For people who are interested in this book outside of school reading and want to know more about the intersection of business, entertainment and/or law, this is not the book to read or refer to. What I did like about this book is when I could understand it, it presented a lot of interesting cases and information about the industry, even in its complicated contracts. Still, professors and teachers, please find a better textbook if you're using this to teach...or arrange your class lectures in a way that breaks the book down in English!

Has room for improvement...
1. There are too many cases to illustrate the same point. For example, the Remedies section does not nearly need to be as long as it is. The bankruptcy section would be just as adequate and informative with 2-3 cases and more commentary. The agency rules chapter and the chapter on literary publishing also have this same problem: it is repetitive and there are too many cases with the same point. Some of the cases would have been been just as effective as a note case.

2. The size of the font for the note cases are too small and sometimes, an eye strain to read. I understand that there is a concern for the length of the book, but with the first suggestion and using thinner pages may fix this. (this book uses paper that is considerably thicker than your average law book). Also, sometimes, with the center justification alignment for the note cases, it squeezes the sentences together, it's almost impossible to read. (see page 199, note 3, the third line --the entire line is practically one word).

3. On the plus side, I do like how the book goes through entertainment agreements. For example, the detailed discussions on music publishing agreements with comments after each provision were very helpful.

A book that has it's groundings firmly set into the the real world, dealing with real problems and real people, providing real life examples and presenting all the legal aspects of the entertaintment business. Best law book I've had in school
In law school, textbooks are generally written, edited, and typeset to be uniformly hard to read.This book, on the other hand, is lucid and interesting as well as covering the important parts of case and statutory law. It's well-organized, and the font and line spacing make it easy on the eyes and comprehensible during late-night studying. For the first time in law school, I found myself reading weeks ahead of the syllabus just for the enjoyment of reading. If all law books were this good, JDs would learn a lot more in school.

Working With It
Prof. Warren is quite well respected.Some students rate this as a great case book.Others really dislike it. If the book is assigned to you buy it and work with it.You can always supplement the book with other books that people find helpful.For an introduction to Chapter 11 Business Reorganizations, I recommendChapter 11 Business Reorganizations: For Business Leaders, Accountants And Lawyers.If you course will also cover other forms of bankrutptcy, I would also purchase Bankruptcy And Debtor/creditor: Examples And Explanations (Examples & Explanations).

We worked it out.
The book was not in the proposed condition, this is a negative for me.But we were able to work it out and I am satisfied with the result.

More engaging than my teacher.
As a student, this was probably the best textbook I've ever used. The authors presented the material in an engaging way that brings out the relevance, controversy, and centrality of creditor/debtor/bankruptcy law in the life of almost every American. I never thought I'd say this about a textbook, but it's a great read.

One of the worst casebooks
This is one of the worst casebooks ever written, although it wont stop the sales because most students do not have a choice of textbooks. Fundamentally Practical!
I'm really digging into this book and appreciate the smooth writing, the references and the locations of websites and exercises in this book.

Most of the material is practical and valuable to the law student who wants to know what to expect in the real world.Since I'm IN the real world already, I can relate to a lot of examples relating to attorneys whose bad communication skills and dismal management styles make working in the legal field tough.

The book gives solutions to these problems in simple, easy to understand terms.

The CD that is with the book is not that useful, since the majority of the CD material is repeated in the back of each chapter.

Also, the number of spelling errors is enough to make me wonder about the editor and publisher, especially when a student is spending over a hundred bucks on this book!"Confidentiatilty" is a new word to me![Should be "Confidentiality"].

Outside of these errors, not a badly written book.Recommend for the fifth edition that the editor go over the text with a fine-blue pencil!

Most excellent textbook
I highly recommend this book on contracts.I am taking a paralegal "Contracts" class and have completed the course except for the final exam.

Definitions of legalisms are very clear and are included in the book (though you will find you must get the paperback version of Black's Law Dictionary), the index to the book is quite useful.Examples are always given and are clear.

The book will also act as a future reference for me when I am analyzing a contract.Each chapter concludes with a "paralegal checklist" that summarizes the subject at hand so you can double-check the contract you are reading to see that everything is correct.

I believe this textbook is part of a new breed of textbooks.I found, for a parallel example, that Michael Sullivan's book on Algebra and Trigonometry is a miracle of thoroughness and clarity, considering the subject, and that this book is a "miracle" of clarity, again considering it is a legal textbook, and the subject.

Well organized, but needs more examples
I am in a love/hate relationship with this book!On the up side, it is very well organized.In fact, it reads like a really, really good set of notes.On the down side, although it is well organized, it ONLY reads like a really, really good set of notes.

I am presently using this book in an online paralegal course and find myself going online constantly to hunt for examples or explanations of the definitions.It would really help for the authors to provide more examples and maybe even answers to selected questions.

On the other hand, if you are trying to plow through a wordy text and need a good, organized synopsis of the material, this is the book for you.

It's an okay book.A source of frustration with it is the frequent use of exercise questions without then explaining the answers.That may work in traditional classroom where class discussion and a teacher are involved, but it does not work for the lone reader.
