5-0 out of 5 stars Best cd for law school I have used
I usually listen to these cds on the commute to/from law school and for every other class, I have been underwhelmed, but the cds help marginally. Not the case with these cds.I didn't 'get' admin. law until these cds.

simply put, my b+ would have been a c-/d+ without using these the last two weeks of the course.I just wish that I had used them at the beginning, maybe I would have understood what my gender-questioning professor was talking about throughout the course.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not really any different from the 2nd Edition
Usually, when a new edition of a product comes out, the consumer expects there to be at least a few significant changes--especially when it comes to the dynamic nature of the law. This is not the case for this CD set.The previous edition is from 2005, and although there have been a number of significant Supreme Court and federal circuit court decisions announced since then, you wouldn't know it from listening to this third edition, released towards the end of 2008.In fact, the lecture is exactly the same as the prior version--they didn't even bother to so much as remaster it or anything else(!)--the only thing that they did was dub-in, in poorly edited fashion, a couple of sentences that really aren't necessary anyway. If you already have the 2005 version, as I did, or if you can find it cheaper, use that instead. It's actually shocking what little effort BarBri put into this 3rd edition.Again, making it clear that they only care about turning a buck. While I am grateful that these audio tapes exist, and they are generally good for reviewing the material, there simply wasn't any reason to release a newer version of this lecture in the manner that was done here, aside from squeezing every last cent out of an already existing product. In rating the tape itself, I would have given it three stars (it's neither the best or the worst tape in this product line), but for this total laziness on BarBri's part in not making any substantial changes to an already existing product. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A start, but could be a better tool
Didn't really go over any solid ideas behind how to structure your own personal essay, more a compilation of essays (along with LSAT score, undergrad school attended, law schools accepted, etc.). It gives you ideas, but if you want a more solid explanation of how to write your essay, this might not be the best choice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Yeah, right!
I know that theses essays were real, but i don't think they wre much help for me. Essays were a very unrealistic. Sorry, Harvard, I didn't invent a cure of polio while volunteering on the space shuttle during my year of a Rhodes Scholar. What do I write for an essay??

4-0 out of 5 stars Good place to get started on your essays
I picked up this book when I started to write my law school application essays. It was just what I needed.Probably the most helpful part of the book is the intro, in which admission directors from several top law schools discuss the application process and application essays. You get some great insight into what sort of content you should put in your essays. The rest of the book is a collection of actual essays that got applicants into various schools. In other words, you can read essays that actually worked.Reading those essays actually made me feel much better about my own work. You don't have to have an awesome essay to get into a good school. But reading these examples will give you a feel of how to focus your work. The book is not a blueprint for a good essay, but it will get you on the right track.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book
Virtually every line in this book contains material recommendations regarding contract drafting. All lawyers should read this book at start of career and keep it handy. This book is hard to put down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Especially Good for Financing and Acquisitions Contracts
This is a good book on contract drafting, which I recommend if you write contracts dealing with financing and acquisitions, which is the author's specialty.

For a more comprehensive resource on contract drafting, I recommend Manual of Style for Contract Drafting, Second Edition by Ken Adams. That book, and Ken's web site AdamsDrafting are, in my opinion, the best sources available for advice on contract drafting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic
My only regret is not reading this book earlier in my career. For all first years and law students, it is a must read.If you are a transactional attorney, this book is a great resource.

Charles Fox deserves an award for creating a road map for junior associates.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the new lawyer on contracts drafting and negotiating
I am a new attorney who just started practicing as a transactional lawyer. I ordered 14 books on this subject. There is no other book that summarized the contracts writing process and the relevant set of legal skills that help in it like this book.
I learned how to darft contracts by doing it while working for a large software company in Seattle. Since I became an attorney, the process became even more interesting (I had many reference points) as I now have the legal skills to add. This helped me combine the hands-on knowledge with the legal theories I learned in school to improve my drafting skills.
The language used is so readable; analogies are thought provoking; techniques explained are useful; and review and interpretation guides are invaluable. Great resource for a new lawyer!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for junior lawyers
This book contains very useful information for junior corporate lawyers (and some helpful things for a more senior lawyer like me). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Law Students Should Buy This Book
If you read the most negative reviews, note the one thing missing - none seem to say they kicked butt and got A's without the book. I got straight A's my first semester and I attribute them largely to religiously following the procedure laid out in this book. Of course you have to study hard and outline - but once you've done that, 1Ls really have no idea how to translate your outline into exam answers. This book tells you how.

One reviewer critiqued the book's failure to address non-traditional exam types - but those exams are typically variations on the traditional format.

One person critiqued the brevity and font size, but I don't think that reviewer understood the purpose of this book. To a 1L in full freak-out mode just prior to his or her first exams, brevity and clarity are GOOD THINGS. Further, simplicity is a GOOD THING, and certain sage advice like the importance of time-management bares repetition. Of course we all know we need to "manage our time," but in the heat of the moment, as panic sets in, its easy to forget the basics.

Focus on this book, strictly adhere to the procedure, and even if you panic you may revert to the procedure to keep you on track. FACT - when you sit down to take your exam, and you see people immediately begin to furiously type while you work the procedure and carefully outline your answers as taught in this book, be assured that you will do better than them. Quality is what counts, and this book teaches ANSWER ORGANIZATION.

Perhaps the single best piece of advice relates to how to ultimately end up remembering everything you'll have to write on the exam. Whitebread will tell you.

While I agree the book title is a bit gimmicky (no "secrets," just methods many people forget), the fact remains that I re-read this book every semester, and I tell ALL 1Ls to buy it during the Law Review session we put on every semester (See? My good grades got me to Law Review - Thank You Prof. Whitebread!).

Now of course nothing guarantees As on exams. You have to be a good writer, and intelligent, and luck plays a role as well...but...

IF THIS BOOK ACCOMPLISHES ONE HUGELY VALUABLE THING, IT IS THAT IT EXPLAINS TO OVERWHELMED 1Ls WHAT INFORMATION FROM YOUR CLASSES YOU WILL NEED TO FOCUS ON, and what information ultimately is unimportant for exam purposes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tips
Working FT and attending law school PT, I am SO glad I attended the lecture the Dean put on using a video of Professor Whitebread during which he explained the tips in this little book.Working FT, I didn't have as much time to study as I needed, so imagine my surprise when grades posted (I did much better than I expected, but that seems to be pretty normal.)If you get a chance to see the video lecture, don't miss it.Prof Whitebread's advice is dead on.

1-0 out of 5 stars give ya 1 secret - Don't Waste Your Money on This Book
Short and sweet kids, I bought this book right before I started law school.Wow, eight whole secrets on top exam performance?Gotta have this one.

Not giving anything away here, but this is 1L without the actual useful benefit. You can't go to law school with out first going to college. These 8 secrets are what you already know or else you would be flipping burgers instead of getting ready for/are in law school.

I will give you a great secret to law school exams for free - GO ASK YOUR PROFESSOR AND/OR FORMER STUDENTS OF THE PROFESSOR.Law school exams vary from multiple guess to essay to a combo of the two.Ask the prof or ask someone who took the class before.

If you have to bribe either, why not use the money you are thinking about wasting on this book on that venture?

Also this book will be in your law library (free reads folks!) and will likely also be in the collection of about half the eager beaver 1L students in your class. They are losing nothing by letting you read it, so have at it, but save your own dollar for something worthwhile, like an outline...

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
This book does little more than expound the IRAC system, which will get you killed on exams.A much, much better book to get is "Getting to Maybe."Don't waste your time or money on this worthless waste of paper and ink.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read this before taking the exam
Professor Whitebread has been teaching for a long time, and of course, he has been to law school as a student. These simple tips will help you prepare to write a better exam answer. These simple tips will also make the difference is how you finish in the class.

His main idea is to apportion your time.Although this seems to go without saying, students still run out of time and neglect to answer all the questions. This is probably the biggest problem students have. From the book, and from my experience, be sure you strictly adhere to the time you set aside.

The professor also discusses what kind of answers you will want to avoid, which is why I wrote the subject line I did here.I made the mistake of reading the book after my exams and realized that I should have rephrased some of my answers.Policy reasons are a necessity in any answer, but the answer must avoid sounding conclusory. The reason for an exam is to explain your answer and show your work, not state what you think is obvious.

I would recommend reading this before going into finals and recommend rereading it before the next set of finals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Excellent book.. Not only does it share the law but also the court cases that waas a result of the law suit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book has been a life saver as a resource book. I bought it for a course I had to take. The required book was by the same authors, only a lot more expensive since its hard cover, and more detailed. I got this book as an additional resource and have found it to be very helpful. It breaks down the 'legal' points into easy to understand (and remember) language. It still covers all the aspects of school law. It is easy to reference. The index and list of case studies that are referenced in the book is easy to follow. Basically, this has been a book that I could read and get the gist of the topic and an understanding of the legal cases that support the different laws. I can see myself keeping this book handy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good summary
This nutshell has been very helpful for my education law class. It's a little out-of-date for more recent Supreme Court cases, but it does a good job of highlighting major cases in each area we've covered.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Law of Schools, Students, and Teachers
Excellent reading material; Excellent on line shopping service including quick standard delivery. No complaints here.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource--School Law in a Nut Shell
They've done it again! This is an excellent reference to use with a general survey school law course. It covers the high points in easy to understand language. The price is right too.I have used earlier editions for several years and I am very happy that an updated version is available. The earlier editions were very popular with my master's students and I expect this edition to be as well. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage of basic topics
I would recommend this audiobook for someone interested in a basic overview of the most common topics in Evidence law.As admitted by Rossi himself, the lecture is not intended to encompass all the topics nor any one topic in great depth. However, he does a very good job in covering the basics. In short, his lectures are a good starting point as supplemental material. He seems to do particularly well in setting a scenario and discussing the practical aspects of the applicable rule.

Since each CD contains only one track approx 1 hr long, finding a specific topic on the disk is very inconvenient.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy Sum and Substance Instead
I read the reviews for this CD series and the Sum and Substance series for evidence, after having a good experience with Sum and Substance Torts. I bought law school legends evidence and later decide to buy Sum and Substance since I wasn't getting as much out of law school legends as I would have liked. I much preferred the sum and substance one as it was better organized and easier to follow. Also, Sum and Substance has more tracks, so you can find and listen to the explanation of specific concepts again without having to search for a concept within the 1 hour tracks you'll find on the law school legends evidence series. Also, the outline that comes with law school legends evidence is too superficial to be of any help. All that said, this CD in and of itself is helpful, just not nearly as helpful for me as Sum and Substance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid
Rossi is good at explaining the concepts and some of the mechanics of the rules, and the Italian accent makes it entertaining. All the essential topics are there. He takes long pauses, though, and the CDs don't go into a ton of detail compared to what is in an Evidence course.Freer's Law School Legends Civil Procedure CDs set a high bar, so it is tough to compare.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bar Exam Lifesaver
I found Faust Rossi through BarBri, he gives the evidence lectures for their Bar Review classes. Honestly, I got nothing whatsoever out of my Evidence class in law school; a combination of a huge ampitheatre style room and an unengaging professor. Rossi made Evidence sensical and approachable, especially if you're from the NY area or a fan of shows like the Sopranos his stories are great. He is excellent about giving practical application for the theories he explains (Vinnie whacks Sal; can Vinnie's mom be made to testify she saw him buy the gun the night before and say 'I am going to whack that botchagaloop Sal, capiche?')

If you're still in Law School and slipping behind in Evidence, or if (like me) you got through law school without actually learning anything about evidence and you're faced with the Bar, these are great CDs to add to your collection, and definitely worth the (admittedly rather high) price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Aid
This lecture covers all the major topics tested on the MBE and most likely your Evidence course. Professor Rossi's explanations of the rules are clear enough to understand while driving your car.His hypotheticals to help explain the rules actually appear in a few of the practice multiple choice questions I did and may appear on your exam (as they did on mine). What's more, the hypotheticals truly develop the rules, and Professor Rossi makes them funny and strange so that they'll stick in your head come exam time. Actually, a few times I burst out laughing from the hypotheticals (guess it doesn't take much to humor a stressed-out law student). The more I listened to this lecture the more my understanding of the subject grew. Well worth the time and money spent. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool
I am always interested in learning something new. I also have to deal with the law frequently(from the right side) and lawyers. I have always been interested in law but being a lawyer is not for me. While looking for interesting audio books to listen to on my way to work every day, I found this one. I realized I could learn a lot more about the law and all I had to do was sit back and listen so it was perfect for me.

Overall, it is a bit dry. It is however just like sitting in the back of a law school class except you can stop the instructor anytime you want without yelling shut-up, just press the pause button. It may not be for everyone, but I really liked not only the material but the entire idea of learning law on CD. I am sure you will find it dry and maybe boring if you have no interest in the law but give it a try even if you are not interested in law and you can learn something new. If you are interested in going to law school, definitely take this course before starting law school and it will help you jump ahead.

I really think it only deserves 4 stars because it is a little dry and even though it is long I would have liked to have seen it include more material, however looking over the reviews I see one unfair review so I am upping my rating by one star to 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars really good set of CDs for con law
I listen to these to and from law school. They cover the basic topics well. There is also an outline in PDF on the last CD.

Other people in the class also like to use flash cards however, I figure it might be a little dangerous to drive 65 mph on the NJ turnpike while looking through the flash cards.:)

4-0 out of 5 stars Legends Series Always Delivers
The first reviewer is trying to hawk his own site, which offers bland computer-voice generated recitations of casebook opinions. They are horrible. Great concept, but in my opinion would be much more effective and enjoyable if these were read by actual human voices.

Now...to Law School Legends...I have used these supplemental lectures all through law school. They are very good. True, they do not always follow your own course outline to the letter, but they provide an EXCELLENT overview of the subject matter and can be very helpful to prepare for an upcoming lecture, by giving you a big picture view. Further, they are helpful for reviewing material you have already learned.

The best part? A real live law professor who sounds like a human being. One of my favorites is the woman professor who lectures on Real Property. Very lively. Con Law is very good too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but depends a lot on how your Prof teaches the course.
This series by necessity paints in broad strokes. There is too much variation in the way different professors teach con law.I found it much more effective to listen to audio versions of cases from sites like audiocasebook than listening to this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful
Professor Maynard manages to simplify yet thoroughly explain the gamut of a Business Associations/Corporations course.
It was very helpful for my review of the class. I highly recommend this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective, clear, and not boring
I bought this CD set in anticipation of my BizOrg final.I was nervous because I did not understand Corporations, and was taking a long car ride anyway.I figured it was worth a try, even though it had a hefty price tag.

Usually I zone in and out for lectures on tape. However, the lecturer for Law School Legends Corporations clearly and interestingly explained the subject and reinforced/emphasized many points. When I reviewed again on paper, I recalled most of the information from the CD, and I did VERY well on my final (in what I thought was my worst subject!)

I knew this CD was successful when I sat for the bar exam.New York tests Corporations on its exam. While looking at a question, I suddenly heard Ms. Maynard's voice repeating the rule of law for the subject three times (as she actually did on the CD).This was months after I listened to the CD, and I still remembered.

Product Description
Law school is a scary place for any new student. For an older ("non-traditional") student, it can be intimidating as well as being ill-designed for the needs of an older, second-career student with children, mortgages, and the like. This book compiles advice from the author, lawyer-editors, and dozens of current and former law students, on such matters as dealing with families and children, the LSAT and GPAs for the older student, the law school application process and law school rankings for non-traditional students, paying for law school, surviving first year and non-academic hurdles, and the occasional skeleton in the non-traditional closet. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of time
I read this book along with Montauk's to get a better understanding of how the application process works for law school and how to prepare my family for the transition. Montauk's book is amazing and is a great guide through the entire process of applying to law school. However, this book was a complete waste of time. Every page has a first person testimonial that is just a repeat of what the author just stated in the previos paragraph. Testimonials should show the application of the principles laid out by the author. This is literally a bunch of warrantless claims. Remove the testimonials out and you got a 50 page booklet. In addition, the book reads like a "I'm ok, you're ok" speech. Throwing a title on a book that implies that you will provide insight to the older applicant and student is great way to sell some books, I applaude the authors marketing skills.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading, but take some things with a grain of salt
As a nontraditional 2L, I found a lot of this book to be pretty accurate as far as what one can expect in the first year of law school. The title is a bit misleading: More than half the book is devoted to how to get into law school. Reading it in my first year, I was less interested in what the author had to say about the decision to go than what to expect during and after. While some of it addresses the experience of the older student, much of it applies to law students of any age.For example, while Cooper discusses Law Review and Moot Court at length, nowhere does he give us a sense of what these activities are like for the older student.I also would have liked more about job opportunities and age discrimination issues.

Cooper comes up with some statistics that seem mathematically unlikely if not impossible, like the only law grads who can hope to get a job teaching law anywhere are the top 5% from the top 10 law schools, or something to that effect. (My experience with professors does not bear this out.) You can only work for a large law firm if you're in the top 10% of the class at a top-20 school. What are his sources? Then he gives us gems like:"If your LSAT score was below the average for your school, you are presumed to be one of the losers until you prove otherwise."Ouch.The book contradicts itself in many places. So what to believe?

One of my biggest beefs with this book is that for all of Cooper's ramming home the importance of going to the right school and getting the best grades, nowhere does he say what law school HE attended, what and where he practices, or what qualifies him to write this book other than that he is "nontraditional," i.e., over 35 with a family.Sorry, but that hurts his credibility with me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Non-Trad Pre-Law or 1L? Buy this Book!
I wish I would have had this book about a year ago when I became serious about law school and studying for the LSAT. It gives you a great overview and realistic look at the LSAT, getting into law school, the 1L year and the rest of the trip.

I was able to skim the first part because I had already passed the LSAT, gotten into law school and been through my first mini-semester over the summer. However, it answered all the questions and filled in a lot of blanks that I had when I started thinking about law school such as how to put the LSAT into prospective, how to choose your school and what to do when you do/don't get in. Plus it gives a nice overview of all the issues you, as a non-trad student have to consider like work, what bag to use, health insurance, balancing like and school (and trust me you need to find this balance and it is possible)brief, how the classes run, etc.

I definitely recommend this book for any non-trad student anywhere between pre-law and their 1L year. I wish I would have known about a year ago. It would have helped me skip a lot of aimless wandering around I did trying to figure out what the heck I was doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get it!You won't be sorry!
I've read other 'advice' books on getting into law school and this one is by far the best of the lot. It has more practical information in it than others and is geared to students other than the typical, straight-out-of-undergrad-I-gotta-get-into-a-top-14-school-applicant. Of course it helps that type of student as well, but as an older (much older) law school hopeful, I gleaned much from reading it.
It's very well organized and the author cleverly uses anecdotal info to support the claims that are made. The book begins very simply with blunt but wise advice about reasons for attending law school and ends with advice about bar passage. It touches many points along the way that describe what is experienced by law students and gives pragmatic, honest, helpful advice. It's an easy read but not too easy, and is one of those types of books you could bounce back and forth in and still not miss a beat.

I highly recommend it and am grateful for its advice!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have thought of a question about going to/getting in/staying in (etc... ) law school, chances are this book answers it.
Later in Life Lawyers is the equivalent to sitting down and picking the brains of those who have "been there, done that."The author weaves priceless real world advice with solid writing direction to create this easy to read fundamental handbook for ANYONE considering law school - not just those who are later in life.

Most of us immediately poll spouses, friends and family before making a huge decision.Face it, if your social circle is anything like mine, you are bound to come up lacking when you begin to pose questions about law school. This book fills the gap between the lack of practical advice and abundance of glossy advertisements for books that guarantee you a smooth law school experience but rarely deliver.

By harvesting thoughtful and insightful answers from [...], Later in Life Lawyers allows you to gain insight from others in a similar situation who share advice from the trenches instead of a lofty commercially orientated perch which is designed to sell books.Organized in a clean, easy-find fashion, I found many tips and tricks I had not even considered before leafing through the book.As a 2L who has hit her share of bumps and bruises, I was able to relate to the integrated postings from the website and found solace from others who had similar negative (and positive!) experiences.

While there are postings from the nontradlaw user forum, the book does not completely rely upon the forum site, and you would lose out on lots of valuable information if you simply posted on the forum without utilizing the book.Besides the solid organization, the writer sews the concepts together in a way that creates a great overall read, not to mention a fundamental tool for all stages of your law school career.

I have no complaints, although I would recommend that you keep your copy close because you are going to refer to it time and time again.I would buy this book for friends or family considering law school since I will not give up my own copy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid product, but could be better
Prof. Block speaks clearly and understandably. Her speaking pace is not too fast, or too slow. She explains the federal income tax fundamentals well. When I emailed her, Prof. Block told me that the recording was completely revised in 2005. Unfortunately, she did not use as many hypos as some of the other audio speakers in the Law School Legends series and Sum & Substance series.

On a technical note, the first disk repeats for less than a minute, but all the material appears to be present. I did not bother trying to get another copy. Also, like most Law School Legend recordings, this disk set does not have short sections tied to topics. I like Finz's Torts for short audio chunks much better. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Lecture Marred by Minor Annoyances
The lecture is very well organized.I listened to this after completing PMBR's Contracts lecture with Professor Daniel Fessler.Professor Spak is no Fessler, but he is very good, and I basically had the outline committed to memory after a second listen. In addition, Spak pays far more attention to the remedies section than do the lecture series through PMBR, and his explanation of remedies is, frankly, better than Fessler's.(Ditto for discussion of warranties.)Overall this is a five star lecture.

However, two complaints: First, Spak keeps drinking water from a plastic cup throughout the lecture. It is only mildly annoying at the beginning, but by CD 4, it is rather unpleasant. Why couldn't the good professor properly water himself prior to recording?Second, he has the habit of dropping PG-13 male locker room humor into the lecture here and there. It is not enough to be unpleasant, but the whole tone and tendency is somewhat outdated and may put off some listeners. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick - Reference - Guide to school Law
I serve as an instructor for graduate students enrolled in school law, many who are budding future school administrators. For those who intend to one day become a school administrator, The Principal's Quick Reference Guide to School Law is a "must have" for their professional library.Even if the students never become an administrator, it is most important that all educators have a good understanding of the laws that can affect their profession.

I recommend this Quick-Reference Guide to all current (and future) educators.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good
I used this book for a class. It is easy to read and a good reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL IN THE HOSTILE NCLB ERA
as we see schools labor under a system designed for failure, the same business model which has bankrupt the once mighty GM corporation by seeking endlessly expanding horizons of AYP, in which teachers suffer similar mal-practice suits as doctors and suffer other liabilities and empty self-interested accusations of misconduct, in which schools face a myriad labrynth of hostile and near vindictive legislation, this tome serves as essential ally for every educator and must be read and fully memorized.

Buy this book and save our schools, and your job!

BEcause of the potent political anti-public education powers currently legislated and at work the authors walk a delicate thin line between being comprehensive and cautious, and often hedge their objective reporting with curious contortions in order to keep access and not step on powerful toes. Kind of like public schools nowadays in this hotly political climate.

Matched my Civ Pro course precisely.Very organized speaker.Has good hypo's and explainationsUsed it to build basic outline and then filled in from class and FRCP.Got an A-, I credit the CD's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Professor in the Law School Legends Series
Professor Whitebread is very experienced as a professor, but more importantly he is an exceptional teacher. He has that unique ability to convey complex material in an understandable way.He also sprinkles in material from his (previous) private practice. He teaches at the FBI academy and also bar prep courses. He is also a very funny man, and if he can make me laugh while I learn this stuff it is quite a gift. His organization is top notch, he includes strategies on how to do well on tests and gives tips on how to know in advance how material will be tested.I will never forget the concept of "hot pursuit" based on a case he defended - I smile while I write this.

I e-mailed the good professor with a question that I had and he got back to me faster than some professors at my own law school.

As an aside, he also has a CD set on Criminal Law - just as good.

Good luck with law school!Dan, J.D. Candidate, 2010

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible!!
The best review I have heard anywhere. The speakers are all excellent and they make their topics seem very easy to understand. They are very down to earth yet make learning the law fun. I guess that is why they call them "legends."

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it twice, at least
I picked this up at the urging of my career services office, and I was not disappointed.Upbeat, friendly, straightforward, and accessible, the book is both helpful and encouraging.

Some of the advice may not seem profound--most of us know to be nice to support staff and many of us know which water glass at a formal dinner is ours--but you are bound to learn a few new things. Considering how much is at stake, it probably isn't a bad idea to review even some of the basics either.

I also think the book helped me secure my summer clerkship--especially the discussions of the economics of law firms and the insights into how hiring partners think.

3-0 out of 5 stars Um...yeah
This book is well written and has a lot of do's and don'ts of the practical legal world. The author speaks a lot about what to do on the job and frequently gives a few good ideas. A huge percentage of those ideas are supported by real-life anecdotes from various legal professionals. The major problem I had with it, is that throughout almost the entire book I kept finding myself saying, "Yeah, duh." As just one of many many potential examples, there is an anecodote about a summer clerk who goes into a firm, whines that he needs his own office and is allowed to use the office of a lawyer who is out sick. The lawyer wants to connect to her computer from home, so the summer clerk is told he absolutely cannot touch the computer. The clerk does so anyway thus preventing the lawyer from being able to connect to the computer and gaining for the clerk the contempt of everyone in the office. There are a lot of little stories like this where somebody does something just blatantly stupid (and a smaller number where somebody does something blatantly correct). Some of the stories are amusing but are almost always connected to advice that seems really obvious. If you think you have really poor judgement then by all means read this book.

I also found the organization a little irritating. There were no distinct chapter breaks. Although it's got a very methodical organization scheme, it READS as though it's one big continuous text. I like to read at night and stop at the end of a chapter. I kept feeling as though if I were to stop reading I would be cutting an idea midstream and that irritated the heck out of me.

In the book's defense, it is well written and the text flows nicely. There's a wonderfully colloquial feel to how it reads.
I've been reading a lot of law school prep-type books of late and this one was not my favorite. It's not terrible, but it doesn't seem entirely useful to me either.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent book, but mostly common sense.
This book was very informative as far as a typical 9-5 workday of a lawyer, but most of her strategies are common sense. Seriously, anyone who doesn't know business manners shoudln't be a lawyer anyway. Its common sense to dress appropriately, to never crack raunchy jokes to a partner, or to speak of how hot another attorney's wife is. If you have any common sense, spend your money on a more practical book with better advice or educational value.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read it early in law school.
Great advice on making the most out of clerkships, classes, professors, law review, and volunteering opportunities that arise in law school.I wish I had read this book before going to law school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful at any point...
I'm a starting 1L at Univ. of Houston Law this Fall and bought this book initially because the title got my attention. Boiled down, it's a refreshingly informal "How to" guide for summer internships and new associates. Some of the advice (e.g. on etiquette) might strike you as "Yeah, well of course...everyone knows that", but that doesn't mean we can't benefit from the occasional reminder! The bulk of the advice in the book though will be new information and most helpful in avoiding the common pitfalls...someone else has been there already and either done it very well or done it very badly - this book helps you benefit from their experiences.
There's commentary throughout from practicing law firm recruiters, associates, partners, professors - seems that input is included from just about every facet of the legal world. The book is primarily of value (I think) for it's new associate centric advice (versus summer internship or while you're in law school). That being said, as a soon to be 1L it was definitely valuable to me to get a sense beforehand of how law firms do business (particularly before I even begin shopping for internships.
I say buy it, it was definitely worth the time/cost, particularly because it's so easy to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it's excellent, but why?
As others have said, this is an excellent book. I picked it as a quick reference/study guide for my Education Law class. Law has always been interesting for me, but I don't get much use out of books that say things like 'X decision rendered in (year) was a landmark, upholding X principle (insert legal jargon).' A couple of my roommates in college were were law students, and I understand that junk, because I helped them study sometimes, and we talked about interesting cases they were studying, etc.
BUT, when I sit down to read about it, that's not what I want to know. I want to know what the court fight was about, what the court decision was, what it means, and how it affects my school and the classroom. That's exactly what Essex does in this book.
Most chapters are around 10-15 pages long, cover approximately 5 essential concepts or factors, including all the major cases or a description of the key ideas, identify which law is relevant (usually state or federal, though district or school board policies often come into play), a summary of the key players, roles, principles, or components of the concept being discussed. If an actual court case is discussed, it ends with a summary of the argument, the courts' decisions, and the final result. And each 1-3 page section finishes with a brief 'Guide' which provides a list of important things to consider, when addressing the policy or issue covered (Essex is usually very conservative with his recommendations, but at least you have an idea what needs to be considered).
It also includes handy things like a good index, a separate list of all the court cases discussed, appendices that include relevant sections of the Constitution, selected federal statutes, and descriptions of major organizations and how they can impact a teacher.
And finally, Essex is a good writer who makes the topics interesting by minimizing the jargon and focusing on why things are important. Several times, I've found myself reading for a while, after I looked something up, just because he makes stuff interesting.

Product Description
Law school can be a terrifying experience if you don't know what you're getting yourself into. For students who don't have their career paths or pedagogic goals mapped out, law school is even more terrifying. There are so many questions that accompany the decision to apply to law school: Is it worth the money? Is it worth the time? Is this the right time to go? Will I do well? How can I do well? How do I find a job? What kind of job is right for me? Is law school like college? And if you decide to go to law school, there are even more questions: What is an outline? How is an exam structured? How do I get a job at a big firm? What is a legal fraternity? What is the bar exam and when do I take it? This book is a firsthand account of trudging through law school without the answers to any of these questions. Three students offer a completely candid student perspective on every aspect of law school, from classmates to bar review, and outlines to studying abroad. While other law school preparation books are helpful, this account is a true story of how things really work, from the ground up. We are not law school experts, we are law school students: just like you. If you've ever wanted to know the real story on law school, this is it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Law School Foreseen
The wise and witty young authors have distilled the essence of law school into a short, useful book. Without knowing where they went to law school, or exactly when, I found that they accurately described my experienco of forty years ago, and the experiences of other students and lawyers I have known in the decades since.

It's a fine book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Current and Aspiring Lawyers
I read this book eight years after finishing law school. It took me back to all that was good, and bad, about that experience.

Anyone who is going, or thinking about going, to law school should read this book to learn what they're getting themselves into.It will help them get some sort of idea of what they need to do to "succeed" in law school (and to define what that means for them) as well as understand the different paths available to those with a J.D.

I also recommend it for current lawyers, so that they can recall the pain and humor of the "classhole" and other law school experiences.

This is a great and humorous read. ... Read more
