Product Description
The Jeita Grotto is a compound two separate but interconnected karstic limestone caves spanning an overall length of nearly 9 kilometres (5.6 mi). The caves are situated in the Nahr al-Kalb valley within the locality of Jeita, 18 kilometres (11 mi) north of the Lebanese capital Beirut. Though inhabited in prehistoric times, the lower cave was not rediscovered until 1836 by Reverend William Thomson; it can only be visited by boat since it channels an underground river that provides fresh drinking water to more than a million Lebanese. In 1958, Lebanese speleologists discovered the upper galleries 60 metres (200 ft) above the lower cave which have been accommodated with an access tunnel and a series of walkways to enable tourists safe access without disturbing the natural landscape. The upper galleries house the world's largest stalactite, they are composed of a series of chambers the largest of which peaks at a height of 120 metres (390 ft). Aside from being a Lebanese national symbol and a top tourist destination, the Jeita grotto plays an important social, economic and cultural role and is a finalist in the New 7 Wonders of Nature competition. ... High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Beirut is the capital and largest city of Lebanon with a population of over 2.1 million as of 2007. Located on a peninsula at the midpoint of Lebanon's coastline with the Mediterranean sea, it serves as the country's largest and main seaport and also forms the Beirut Metropolitan Area, which consists of the city and its suburbs. The first mention of this metropolis is found in the ancient Egyptian Tell el Amarna letters, dating to the 15th century BC, and the city has been continuously inhabited since. Beirut holds Lebanon's seat of government and plays a central role in the Lebanese economy with its Downtown, Hamra, Verdun, and Ashrafieh based corporate firms and banks. The city is the focal point of the region's cultural life, renowned for its press, theaters, cultural activities, and nightlife. After the destructive Lebanese civil war, Beirut underwent major reconstruction, and the redesigned historic city center, marina, pubs and nightlife districts have once again rendered it a tourist attraction. Beirut was named the top place to visit in 2009 by The New York Times. It was also listed as one of the ten liveliest cities in the world by Lonely Planet in 2009. ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Anti-Lebanon mountains, is the Western name for the Eastern Lebanon Mountain Range, which are a northeast-trending mountain range between Syria and Lebanon. Its Western name comes from the Greek word for u2018oppositeu2019. The majority of the mountain range lies in Syria. The border between Syria and Lebanon is largely defined along the crest of the range. At its southern end it is also within the Golan Heights. The range lies east of and parallel to the Mount Lebanon range. To the west lies the Beqaa Valley in the north and the Hasbani River valley in the south. These valleys separate it from the Lebanon range in central Lebanon. To the east, in Syria, lies the Eastern Plateau which contains the city of Damascus. The Anti-Lebanon range is approximately 150 km in length. To the north, it extends to almost the latitude of the Syrian city of Homs before dying out. To the south, the range coalesces with the Golan Heights plateau but includes the highest peaks of Mount Hermon, at 2,814 metres and Ta'la't Musa at 2,669 metres. These peaks are snow-covered for much of the year and are located on the Lebanese-Syrian border. ... Read more

Product Description

This book examines the legacy of Lebanon’s civil war and how the population has learnt to cope. The author explores the efforts of those who wish to forget and those who wish to remember, so as not to repeat past mistakes, shedding new light on trauma and the persistence of ethnic and religious hostility.

By considering how Lebanese youth are dealing with their national past, Larkin addresses issues of:

  • Lebanese post-war amnesia and the gradual emergence of new memory discourses and public debates
  • Lebanese nationalism and historical memory
  • visual memory and mnemonic landscapes
  • oral memory and post-war narratives
  • war memory as an agent of ethnic conflict and a tool for reconciliation and peace-building.

Based on extensive qualitative research and social observation, this book offers a unique insight into Lebanon’s recurring communal tensions and offers a fresh perspective on the issue of war memory. As such, this is an essential addition to the existing literature on Lebanon and will be relevant for scholars of sociology, Middle East studies, anthropology, politics, history and memory studies.

Product Description

As southern Lebanon becomes the latest battleground for Islamist warriors, Everyday Jihad plunges us into the sprawling, heavily populated Palestinian refugee camp at Ain al-Helweh, which in the early 1990s became a site for militant Sunni Islamists. A place of refuge for Arabs hunted down in their countries of origin and a recruitment ground for young disenfranchised Palestinians, the camp--where sheikhs began actively recruiting for jihad--situated itself in the global geography of radical Islam.

With pioneering fieldwork, Bernard Rougier documents how Sunni fundamentalists, combining a literal interpretation of sacred texts with a militant interpretation of jihad, took root in this Palestinian milieu. By staying very close to the religious actors, their discourse, perceptions, and means of persuasion, Rougier helps us to understand how radical religious allegiances overcome traditional nationalist sentiment and how jihadist networks grab hold in communities marked by unemployment, poverty, and despair.

With the emergence of Hezbollah, the Shiite political party and guerrilla army, at the forefront of Lebanese and regional politics, relations with the Palestinians will be decisive. The Palestinian camps of Lebanon, whose disarmament is called for by the international community, constitute a contentious arena for a multitude of players: Syria and Iran, Hezbollah and the Palestinian Authority, and Bin Laden and the late Zarqawi. Witnessing everyday jihad in their midst offers readers a rare glimpse into a microcosm of the religious, sectarian, and secular struggles for the political identity of the Middle East today.
